Example 1 - Area geografica

Considera i fattori economici e la loro importanza per la regione o la città studiata.

L’economia di Lombardia è una delle più forti d’Italia. Infatti, il Prodotto Interno Lordo è più del 20% del totale nazionale. La regione è anche molto diverso per quanto riguarda la geografia e questo è importante.

Consideriamo in primo luogo la città di Milano, capoluogo della regione e centro finanziario a livello globale. Questo settore offre molti servizi e porta molti soldi alla città. La città è anche un centro importante per le automobili, la moda e l’industria. Questa varietà di attività fa che Milano sia centrale all’economia regionale.

La Lombardia è anche una regione importante per quanto riguarda l’agrticoltura. Il clima nella pianura padana è umido e la terra è molto fertile. Per questo, la regione è al primo posto per la produzione di foraggi e latte ed è anche molto importante per la produzione di altri prodotti come il riso. Molti di questi prodotti vengono esportati in Italia e all’estero e per questo l’agricoltura è un settore importante per l’economia regionale.

Nonostante tutto questo succeso, ci sono anche alcuni fattori che non sembrano così positive per l’economia.

Ci sono molti immigrati che vengono a Lomdardia per cercare lavoro e questo mette pressione sull’ infrastruttura e porta conseguenze economiche. Come Milano è un centro finanziario è stata affettata dalla recente crisi economica globale. La disoccupazione regionale è cresciuta anche – la tassa è salita dal 3.1% nel 2007 al 3,7% nel 2008.

Adesso è importante rafforzare i successi economici già esistenti perché la situazione non vada da male in peggio.

Reading, research and understanding:

Here the candidate displays knowledge of different economic aspects of the region, there is evidence of some reading and there is some statistical illustration of some of the points made. The candidate considers the economic factors pertaining to the region’s geography and a balanced discussion is given of the positive and negative factors relating to the economy. Analysis is not particularly sophisticated but within the confines of the word limit, the candidate does engage with all parts of the question and understanding of major issues can be deemed to be adequate.

Mark Range: 13-18 (upper end)

Organisation and development:

The candidate attempts to present a logical argument here. The essay is organised logically and ideas are effectively sequenced. Development of ideas is in evidence but is a little unambitious at times.

Mark Range: 5-6

Quality of Language:

Communication here is good and there is a range of lexis and a high level of accuracy. There is not a great deal of complex structures but when attempted they are successful.

Mark Range: 5

Overall:

This is a good essay which is balanced and which engages with all parts of the question set. The candidate could perhaps have evidenced points a little more by use of more statistical or other relevant material by way of illustration.


Example 2 - Area geografica


Torino è una gran città dal nord Italia. E una regione industrial. Era impoortante con la sua origine e era capitale d’Italia molti anni fa.

Volgio parlare del FIAT (Fabbrica Italiana Auto Torino) perché l’industria più importante di Torino. Si fondò nel 1899 e adesso ha più di 200,000 impiegati. Questi sono importanti per l’economia. La fabbrica produca Automobili e la maggior parte delle impiegati lavorano nella città stessa. Ci sono molti immigranti nella città di Torino. Ogni anno la fabbrica produca molti veicoli come Automobili e camioni. Nel 2008 il Fiat Nuova 500 era chiamato il meglior auto dell’anno. Tutto questo importante per la reputazione della fabbrica e per l’economia della città.

Altro fattore economico è i Gioci Olimpici che hanno sucesso a Torino nel 2006. Questi era importante per l’economia con i turisti che vengono per spendere i soldi e visitare luogi come il Palazzo Reale, i Castelli e i musei coime il Museo Egizio. Torino ha anche una clima bella con inverni freddi e fa caldo all’estate. C’è molto per i turisti da far e da vedere. C’è anche la costa vicino a Torino e questo è importante per la regione – i turisti che non volgiono di sciare possono andare in costa.

La famosa Squadra di calcio, la Juventus, è un fattore economico per la città perché molta gente sono tifosi della squadra e vengono per vedere la partita. Ma anche comprano i prodotti.

In conclusione, è possibile di vedere come ci sono molti fattori economici a Torino.

Here the candidate makes reference to certain areas associated with the city studied. There are some details which may be relevant to the area of the economy but reference to these does not explicitly address the question set. The candidate is certainly familiar with the city but there is a lot of irrelevance and on the whole the response fails to answer the question. There is almost no evidence of reading and research in terms of economic factors affecting the city and understanding is minimal.

The piece is at best rambling. There is some organisation in terms of paragraphs but ideas are not effectively sequenced nor are they related to the question set. The overall impression is one of confusion.

Quality of language:

Some communication is achieved here on a basic level but there are many inaccuracies, even in basic linguistic structures. Sentence construction is also basic and register is often inappropriate.

Overall:

This is a rather confused piece of work, especially within the context of the question set. While it is clear that the candidate has some knowledge of the city, this is somewhat general and does not suggest that any real research or reading has taken place. Language is of poor quality and irrelevant material often acts as a barrier to any real points being made.


The importance of addressing the question and substantiating and justifying points based on research and reading is to be highlighted here.

Example 3 - Studi storici

Descrivi un personaggio specifico del periodo storico studiato. Spiega l’importanza del suo ruolo.

Secondo me, uno dei personaggi più importanti del Risorgimento in Italia è stato Giuseppe Garibaldi. Era un gran uomo militare ma anche politico e fino ad oggi lo si considera uno dei ‘Padri Della Patria’.

È nato nel 1807. Da giovane, infatti nel 1833, ha incontrato Giuseppe Mazzini a Londra e fra poco, è diventato socio del gruppo che Manzini aveva fondato, ‘La Giovine Italia’. Un anno dopo però, dopo un’insurrezione fallita in Piemonte, Garibaldi è dovuto andare in esilio in Francia. Dopo di questo, ha viaggiato in America del Sud.

Garibaldo è tornato in Italia nel 1848, un periodo di guerra contro gli austriaci in Italia, e si è offerto al re Carlo Alberto, perché non voleva che ci fossero più stranieri sulla penisola italiana.

Forse la cosa più importante che ha fatto è stata la cosidetta ‘Spedizione dei Mille’, uns spedizione militare con l’obiettivo di aggiungere il territorio del Regno delle due Sicilie. Ha condotto una spedizione di mille soldati a Sicilia. La spedizione è partita il 6 maggio del 1860 e la prima vittoria è successa a Calatafimi il 15 maggio. Dopo qualche mese di combattere, e con l’aiuto delle insurrezioni popolari, l’esercito di Garibaldi ha conquistato questo regno alla fine. Dopo l’unificazione del Paese, Garibaldi è diventato politico ed è morto nel 1882.

Io credo che Garibaldi era molto importante perché era un uomo molto popolare - era capace di sollevare il popolo ed era prima di tutto un nazionalista. A volte ha deciso di ignorare i suoi propri desideri per il bene


del Paese ed è stato molto importante per realizzare il sogno del Risorgimento.

Garibaldi


Here the candidate displays knowledge of the key events associated with Garibaldi. Events are presented logically and generally expressed succinctly. Although there is some analysis, it is never complex and or overly sophisticated. However, within the confines of the question and the word limit, the candidate does show adequate knowledge, as well as some evidence of reading and research.



Ideas are generally well sequenced here and the essay is organised in a logical, generally chronological way. Ideas are well linked but development is patchy and unambitious at times.

Mark Range: 5-6


The language used here is very accurate and the essay is generally very well expressed. Complex structures are handled well and there is an adequate range of lexis as appropriate to this question. The essay reads very well.

Overall:


This is generally a good essay – the candidate uses the language well and communicates lots of relevant factual information and clearly displays knowledge of the chosen character. There is some analysis but this is not as well developed as it might be. There would need to be more analysis for more marks to be awarded.

Example 4 – Studi Storici


Benito Mussolini è nato il 29 luglio del 1883. Nel 1922, è diventato Primo Ministro d’Italia.

Qualche anno prima di questo, ha fondato il Partito Fascista perché voleva un’Italia forte e nazionalista, credendo che il socialismo non servirebbe più il Paese. Mussolini voleva una rivoluzione fascista e nel 1922, i Fascisti sono venuti al potere con la marcia su Roma. Verso la fine degli anni 20, si è avvicinato alla Germania e al partito nazionalsociaista. Benchè non era d’accordo con le idee razziali di questo partito all’inizio, nel 1938, ha introdotto le leggi razziali in Italia, un’azione che avrebbe molto importanza per molte persone italiane.

Con lo scoppio della seconda guerra mondiale, e con il promesso di aiuto da Hitler per seguire le sue interessi in Grecia e in Africa, è entrato nella guerra con la Germania. Però, la guerra non è andato come ci si aspettava e quando le truppe alleate sono arrivate in Italia Mussolini ha scritto a Hitler per dirgli che non sarebbe possibilie continuare l’alleanza. Mussolini è poi diventato capo della Repubbica Italiana Socialista in quache parte del Paese. Ma ha dovuto scappare in Svizzera verso la fine della guerra. Il 28 aprile del 1945 è stato fucilato dai partigiani italiani.

Mussolini era molto importante perchè, con le sue idee di gloria per l’Italia ha unito molte persone ma allo stresso tempo era risponsabile per molta sofferenza, soprattutto con l’introduzione delle leggi razziai. Ha utilizzato anche la religione per consolidare la sua posizione, e questo ci dimostra che era intelligente e disposto a fare qualsiasi cosa per avere successo.

The candidate displays knowledge of some of the key events surrounding Mussolini, although some events are merely glossed over, such as the war. There is however, some evidence of reading and research here. Analysis of the importance of Mussolini is rather more limited, with a short discussion of this at the end. The response is more narrative than analytical on the whole.

There is evidence of an ability to organise material in a coherent manner here. The events are expressed in a chronological manner. However, ideas are not always developed or followed through to a logical conclusion. Development is, therefore, patch at best and is unambitious.

Overall comments:

The candidate does show an ability to answer the question set within a logical framework. Ideas are however not well developed and the assessment of the importance of Mussolini is rather limited. In order to score more marks, the candidate would need to provide more evaluation of the role of Mussolini in terms of its importance for the historical period.


Example 5 - Aspetti della società moderna di lingua italiana.

Considera un aspetto della società moderna di lingua italiana che hai studiato. Indica perché lo ritieni di particolare importanza.

Un aspetto della società moderna che trovo interessante è quello della famiglia. La famiglia è sempre stata molto importante in Italia ma adesso la società sta cambiando e per questo la famiglia non è importante come nel passato. Nel passato la madre non lavorava ma al giorno d’oggi molti lasciano i bambini perché vogliono e devono lavorare. La società è cambiata molto e la società italiana è diventata molto come quella americana. Le donne non hanno lo stesso tempo per passare con i bambini e per questo, i bambini e la famiglia soffrono. Allo stesso tempo, quando c’è un padre lui aiuta con i bambini.

Il divorzio diventa sempre più popolare in Italia e per questo, ci sono più famiglie con soltando un genitore. Questo cambia la natura della famiglia tradicional in Italia.

C’è più pressione nella società in genere e ci sono famiglie che non fanno quasi niente intime. Non mangiano insieme a tavola ma invece mangiano il Fast food davanti alla tivù e non parlano delle cose importanti. Per questo la famiglia italiana è diventata così diversa.

Ma tutto detto, la famiglia è sempre qualcosa molto importante in Italia. Molte famiglie sono grandi e fanno delle cose insieme. È un’istituzione delle più importanti nella società ed è un fonte di stabilità per i giovani.

Un altro aspetto della famiglia è avere il buon nome. Questo è così importante in Italia per l’onore della famiglia e lo trovo molto interessante perché questo concetto è molto importante da molto tempo come possiamo vedere in film come ‘Il Padrino’.

Per riassumere, la famiglia è al centro della società in Italia anche se ci sono dei cambi.

The candidate chooses the topic of the family in Italy. The candidate mentions some important events that have led to changes within the family unit in Italy in recent years, such as women in the workplace and societal factors. This is not however supported with any real evidence, statistical or otherwise. The candidate then deviates to discuss the idea of family honour but no real point is made here. The response is rambling towards the end and the conclusion is extremely weak. This response falls into the category of a discursive essay and suggests very little research has taken place and understanding of the question set is limited.

Mark Range: 1-6


There is some evidence of organisation, more so in the first half of this response. The essay then deviates and the candidate starts to ramble. There is no real ability to draw conclusions in evidence here. Ideas are not developed to any creditable extent and there is very little analysis.

Communication here is satisfactory and there is a fair range of appropriate lexis. There is no real complexity in the language used however.

Overall:

This essay is a superficial personal view of the family in Italian society. The candidate does not substantiate or justify their points and there is no real analysis. This falls within the realms of a discursive essay and is not appropriate for this unit. Candidates answering on such topics should be aware of the dangers of giving an inappropriate response such as this as this would seriously impact upon the marks awarded. topic on this unit must show clear evidence of research and reading on the topic chosen to be successful.

Example 6 - Letteratura e arte

Con riferimento a un personaggio del libro, l’opera teatrale o il film da te prescelto discuti il suo ruolo e la sua importanza e considera fino a che punto l’autore / il regista sia riuscito a rappresentare questo personaggio.

Nel romanzo “Io non ho paura” il personaggio che mi interessa più è Michele. Lui è un ragazzo da campagna, ha dieci anni e habbita con la sua famiglia – Padre, Madre e Sorella. Loro habitano in un villaggio molto piccolo nel Sud. Le famiglia non è molto riccha. Michele ha degli amici con cui gioca. Loro sono ‘Skull’ – il più grande e il ‘capo’. Puoi, c’è Salvatore che ha simile èta con Michele che lo considera intelligente. Michele è una persona independente che non ha paura di molte cose. Ha una buona maturità per qualcuno di sua età, e quando vediamo che fa nella storia, lui è un ragazzo bravo.

Michele encontra un ragazzo, Filipo in una bucca che Filipo era in. Lui prima pensa che ha trovato qualcosa preciso come oro ma è spaventato quando vede che è una persona. Dopo di questo, torna alla buca perché è molto curioso e scopre Filipo. A le altre volte che va alla bucca poco a poco Michele fa a Filipo parlare e lo conosce. Michele da a Filipo qualcosa da mangiare e acqua. Michele tratta bene Filipo e fa amico. Quando scopre che la famiglia sapeva di Filipo e che voleva ucciderlo, Michele ha fatto il suo lavoro per proteggere l’amico.

Io penso che nell libro c’è molto detaio e che è scritto dall autore come la sua immaginazione pensava. Vediamo la natura infantile di Michele ma diventa come adulto quando aiuta Filipo. Ci dice la differenze tra il bene e il male. Il lettore può immaginare le evenimenti e per questo credo che l’autore è successo e secondo me, è possibile che Michele rappresenta un vero persona.

Some communication achieved here but on a basic level throughout. Sentence construction is basic and there are frequent and basic errors, some of which impede comprehensibility at times.

Overall:

The candidate certainly attempts to answer the question here but does so in a superficial manner throughout. The response follows a logical sequence yet points are not followed through to any real conclusion. Analysis is limited as a result and the language gives a general impression of inaccuracy and limited ability to manipulate. A less narrative response would be required for more marks.

Example 7 – Letteratura e arte


Annetta è una ragazza che abita in un piccolo paese. Come è una ragazza, deve scegliere di andare a scuola o di restare a casa. Sceglie la scuola ma non è contenta. Vuole avere i pantaloni perché vede che i ragazzi hanno più libertà. Poi decide di essere monaca perché cred che le monache portano i pantaloni ma questo non è possibile per lei. Dop di questo, diventa l’amica di Angelina, una ragazza dal nord che ha molta libertà. Comincia a comportarsi come una puttana e quado lo zio la vede con un ragazzo le cose vanno molto male per lei. Deve andare a vivere con i zii ma lo zio cerca di violentarla. Alla fine va alla polizia per rinunciare questo e alla fine vediamo che si sposa con il ragazzo della festa, Nicola.

Annetta è importante perché vuole avere la libertà. Rappresenta la situazione delle donne in questa società. Non possono fare quello che vogliono perché gli uomini hanno tutto il potere e poi, Annetta ci lo mostra. Per questo decide di ribellarsi ma le conseguenze sono gravi per lei.

Io credo che la scrittrice, Lara Cardella rappresenta Annetta bene perché tutti possiamo vered le difficoltà della sua situazione ma non possiamo fare niente per cambiarla, e come lei, ci sentiamo la frustrazione. Non può Research-based Essay Guide (Part 2) Edexcel Advanced GCE Italian

scappare qui dove la donna e moglie, donna e casalinga. Cardella ci presenta una serie di cose che ci fa pensare che non è sempre possibile cambiare la vita in una società di certe regole.

This candidate shows knowledge of the text here by describing aspects of Annetta’s role. They describe the key events which happen to Annetta in the novel, although this is largely descriptive. The candidate then goes on to discuss the significance of Annetta’s character as a representation of the situation of females in southern Italian society at the time. The candidate touches very slightly upon the author’s success in representing the character but does not explain well what they mean and the essay ends in rather an unclear manner. There is adequate understanding of Annetta’s role in the book as well as some evidence of research but analysis is rather limited.

Mark Range: 13-18 (lower end)



The essay is organised in a reasonably logical manner with the candidate attempting to address the main points of the question in a fairly logical sequence. The candidate does not develop the points made to any great extent and the response is somewhat rambling towards the end.

Communication is generally satisfactory in this essay and the range of appropriate lexis is fair. There are errors and language is not particularly sophisticated but these do not prove to be a barrier to communication.

Overall:

In this essay, the candidate shows some knowledge of the text, expressed albeit in a very narrative manner. Yet the candidate shows the ability to go beyond a minimal response by offering some of their own interpretations within the context of the question. Analysis is not sophisticated however and the candidate does not develop points or follow these through to any real conclusion. The candidate would have been better placed to have made the first part more succinct and provide more analysis

Example 8 – Letteratura e arte


In “Volevo i pantaloni”, il personaggio centrale è senza bubbio Annetta. E’ un personaggio complesso perché rappresenta una lotta interna ma allo stesso tempo rappresenta la società in cui il romanzo è ambientato.

Annetta ci mostra la natura rigida della società- come lei è una ragazza non può scegliere quello che fa. Invece, deve fare quello che fanno tutte le altre ragazze. Quando Annetta si rende conto dell’impossibilità della sua situazione decide di reagire e di ribellarsi contro le regole. Decide che vuole indossare i pantaloni che sono per lei un simbolo di indipendenza e di libertà. Dopo cercare varie alternative come diventare monaca o fingere di essere uome, decide di fare amicizia con Angelina, una ragazza dal nord che non sembra dover seguire le stesse regole. benché non sia di vera amicizia, mostra ad Annetta le possiblità per una donna. Alla fine, però, vediamo che diventa come le altre donne nel senso che si sposa.

Annetta è molto importante perché rivela le realtà di vivere in una società tradizionale dove c’è tanta violenza sia fisica che psicologica. Ci mostra anche le cose come il pregiudizio, le pettegolezze e i valori di una società così dove l’onore e fare una bella figura sono molto importanti. Si può considerarla come uno specchio della situazione delle donne in una società stagnante e senza amore.

Secondo me, Cardella rappresenta Annetta con molto successo. L’uso del io narrante ci permette di entrare direttamente nei pensieri di Annetta e possiamo capire la futilità della sua situazione. L’uso anche del dialetto ci dà un senso di realismo.

This is a good essay which presents the role of the character within a generally analytical framework. The candidate makes many good points and generally develops these well. There is clear evidence of an ability to analyse, to structure an essay and to sequence ideas effectively.
