Rescued – Genesis 34-36 Week Nineteen: Rescued from Compromise

Just when we thought Jacob was going to be ok, we come to Genesis 34, possibly one of the worst chapters recorded in the Bible. I’m constantly amazed by how raw and authentic the Bible is. God doesn’t try to make people look better than they are, and the story always points back to a God of grace who is waiting to rescue us. I’m so thankful for it!

Day One: Dinah

Jacob had 12 sons and 1 daughter, Dinah. But boy what a daughter she was. We’re about to read the first half of her story today. I’m praying that God uses this story to convict you of any unconfessed sin in your life. Read Genesis 34:1-12 Exploring the Text

1. Whose daughter was Dinah? 2. Why did Dinah go out to the land? Was her goal to get in

trouble?

19 3. What tragedy overtook Dinah in Shechem?

4. Something unusual happened after Dinah’s assault. What was it?

5. What were Jacob and his sons’ responses

to the assault? 6. How committed was Shechem to have Dinah for his wife? 7. Do you think God would have approved of Shechem marrying

Dinah after the men were circumcised?

1 Corinthians 10:13

There has no temptation taken you but such as is common to man,

but God is faithful who will not suffer you to be tempted

above what you are able.

Personal Application 8. Share a situation in which your compromise

of a principle produced unfortunate results for others as well as yourself.

19 Day Two: Murder in the Land

Dinah’s story begins badly enough, but it’s only about to get worse. It’s hard to read the story, but God put it in Genesis for a reason. Let’s find out why. I’m praying that God purifies your heart and draws you closer to him with each passing day! Read Genesis 34:13-31. Exploring the Text 1. Who do Jacob’s sons remind you of in terms of their

deceitfulness? 2. What plot did they come up with? 3. What kind of man must Shechem have been to convince every

man in his city to go through circumcision?

4. Which 2 sons of Jacob took the leadership in killing the sons of Hamor?

5. How do you respond to the reaction of

Jacob’s sons and the severe measures they take for revenge?

6. What happened to Dinah at the end of the story? 7. What was Jacob’s perspective of the way the incident played

out?

In our Christian life both

compromise and commitment can

be costly.

19 Personal Application 8. Compromise leads to negative consequences,

but God always gives a way out. How can a follower of Christ lessen the negative consequences that come as a result of compromise? Apply your answer personally.

9. Have you ever paid someone back with more

evil than they deserved? How does Genesis 34 convict you to change?

Day Three: Bethel

What a disaster Genesis 34 ended up being. Throughout the chapter, we never even hear a word about God. Maybe that was the problem to begin with... Today we will read Genesis 35:1-15. Jacob is finally going to make it back to Bethel, the place where he first met God. Exploring the Text 1. In verse 1, what did God instruct Jacob? 2. What was the cost of carrying out God’s instructions? 3. What effect did Jacob’s obedience have on the surrounding

cities?

19

Genesis 35:10

Your name is Jacob; no longer shall your name be called Jacob,

but Israel shall be your name.

4. What was significant about Bethel as stated in verse 7? 5. What specific promises did God affirm to Jacob and his

descendants in vs. 8-15?

Personal Application 6. What foreign god in your life might be taking

the place of God? 7. What specific steps of obedience do you

need to take as you grow in your walk with the Lord?

19 Day Four: Tragedy Strikes

Have you ever noticed how mountain peaks are almost always followed by valleys? Jacob has just finished renewing his commitment to the Lord, he’s hit a spiritual high, but he’s about to face some sad news in today’s passage. Read Genesis 35:16-29. Exploring the Text 1. What was the first tragedy that hit Jacob in today’s passage? 2. What was the name of the child that Rachel had when she dies?

What did his name mean? 3. Where was Rachel buried?

4. Another tragedy hits Jacob in verse 22. What was it?

5. List the sons of Jacob again as a reminder.

6. Can you believe Isaac was still alive by the time Jacob gets back

to him? How old was Isaac when he died? 7. Who buried Isaac? What final picture of Isaac and his sons does

that give us?

God’s love is not a pampering

love, it is a perfecting love.

obeying the Lord. Have you seen that to be true in your life?

Day Five: Genealogies

I can’t believe we’re just about through with the story of Jacob. We will start focusing on Joseph next week. This is an incredible feat, and you should be congratulating yourself! Well done, friend. Today we will finish up by reading Genesis 36. It’s a chapter of lots and lots of names. Let’s pray for insight into God’s word once again.

Exploring the Text 1. Whose genealogy is listed in Genesis 36? 2. How did Esau’s genealogy compare on first glance to his

brother Jacob’s in Genesis 35:22-26? 3. Why do you think God spends so many verses listing the

genealogy of Esau?

19 4. Focus on verse 6-7. How did God providentially order

circumstances to allow Jacob to remain in the land of promise?

5. In Genesis 25:23 God promised Rebekah

that 2 nations were in her womb. Does Genesis 36 help us see how that came to pass?

Thank God that He is with us in

our days of distress, even as

He was with Jacob. Thank God that He

knows every hair on our head, just

as He knew Esau’s

descendants!
