The Vision a publication of City Rescue Ministries of Saginaw SUMMER 2015 Moving Forward Thomas Davis was living in Texas when he thought he had finally found the stability he needed for living independently. However, in February 2014, he received word that his mom, who lived in Michigan, needed his help so he made the decision to move to give her the support she needed. Although he was glad to help his mom Thomas felt it was time that he focused on himself. “I wanted to have my own apartment and my own job to show that I can make it,” states Thomas. At 26, Thomas felt that it didn’t look good to tell people he was “living with his Momma!” He remembered his family (his great- grandmother in particular) talking about the Rescue Mission being a place for people to go who needed help. Thomas came to the City Rescue Mission, men’s emergency shelter in September 2014. Knowing he wanted to move forward, Thomas met with a case manager and began taking the necessary steps to becoming a stable, independent man. He went to chapel daily and he volunteered his time in the Mission kitchen. While being served a meal at the Mission’s kitchen window, Thomas noticed Mission Food Service Assistant Felecia Moore working alone. He asked “Miss Felecia,” as he respectfully calls her, if they needed help and she said yes. After talking with the food service manager and his case manager, Thomas became a regular helper in the Mission kitchen. “I like working with the kitchen staff. It’s like family.” Thomas started taking additional steps to becoming a stable person. He joined the Potters Touch Ministry after being invited by another Mission guest and took a seasonal job at UPS. When the seasonal position ended and the new-year began, Thomas met with Mission job coach, Daniel Bhandari. Thomas took the computer and budgeting classes which gave Daniel an opportunity to see Thomas’ commitment to changing his life. “This young man was humble, he came to class on time and he was dependable,” states Daniel. After completing his classes, Daniel set up an interview for Thomas that lead to full time employment at Blue Diamond Steel. Thomas was one of the first participants in the Mission’s Moving Forward Program launched in October 2014. He appreciates the opportunity given to develop new skills. He is saving money and looking forward to moving into his own apartment. “I wanted...my own job to show that I can make it.”

Moving ForwardThomas Davis was living in Texas when he thought he had finally found the stability he needed for living independently. At 26, Thomas felt that it didn’t look good to tell people he was “living with his Momma!”

He remembered his family (his great- grandmother in particular) talking about the Rescue Mission being a place for people to go who needed help.

He joined the Potters

Touch Ministry after being invited by another Mission guest and took a seasonal job at UPS.

After completing his classes, Daniel set

up an interview for Thomas that lead to full time employment at Blue Diamond Steel.

Thomas was one of the first participants in the Mission’s Moving Forward Program launched in October 2014. He appreciates the opportunity given to develop new skills. He is saving money and looking forward to moving into his own apartment.

110th Anniversary Celebrations!

2015 Rescue Ministries Al Christiansen Golf Challenge was a huge success. The annual Golf Challenge was held May 15 at the beautiful Apple Mountain Golf Club. The Golf Challenge sponsor by InCal Technologies raised over $70,000 to help provide vital services to the homeless and elderly in the Great Lakes Bay Region. Our top three teams raised $23,542.

Special thank you to our sponsors.

For Your Partnership In The 2015 Hoops For The Homeless. Together We Raised $9,611, Providing 320 Nights Of Shelter!

We are so grateful and appreciate the students, faculty, parents, and alumni of both All Saints Central and Nouvel Catholic Central High Schools as they once again participated in the Hoops for the Homeless basketball game, raising $9,611 to help the homeless! Both schools had fun with creative ways of raising money for Rescue Ministries of Mid-Michigan the month leading up to the game. With the bragging rights for the winner on the line, the event was held April 10th at a neutral location so there was no home court advantage. Delta College Athletics is a proud sponsor for this event each year, donating the use of Pioneer Gym for the game.

Representatives from both schools worked together for months planning their individual fundraisers and the highly interactive activities that make for a high-energy game. “Hoops for the Homeless” is a great event. We may be raising money but the staff of the missions are raising hopes and dreams, and it is certainly a grace to be partnered with them in any way we can,” says Maribeth Hopps, Campus Minister and Hoops for the Homeless organizer at Bay City All Saints High School and Middle School. Since 2009, the first year of this annual event, the schools have raised $63,729.19!

Sponsors included Bellsmith Graphic Design, Buffalo Wild Wings, Catholic Federal Credit Union, Delta College Athletics and Pepsi.

“I wanted...my own job to show that I can make it.”

How well do you know your Mission? The first mission established in the United States was the Water Street Mission of New York City, founded by Jerry Mcauley in 1871. It didn’t take very long for similar needs to be identified in communities across our country. Drunkenness, poverty, and homelessness were becoming prevalent in urban areas. In 1905 Saginaw was well known for its lumber industry, but it also was known for lascivious living and people in need. So well-known were the problems in Saginaw that a man by the name of Mel Trotter was compelled to come to Saginaw to help start a work of change. That was the birth of the City Rescue Mission of Saginaw.

Fast forward 110 years from Mel Trotter. The times have changed, the faces are different, poverty still exists, and bad choices still occur. There are some drastic differences as well: women and children make up nearly 50% of the homeless population, the mentally ill are present in our shelters more than ever before, and the faces of those homeless are much younger than 110 years ago. But one thing remains consistent; we are on the front lines to help the homeless and low income of our region with emergency shelter, programs and services to help restore, and more importantly, to demonstrate the love of God.

This year we celebrate the 110 year anniversary of the foundation of this great ministry and the 10 year anniversary of the establishing of Good Samaritan Rescue Mission. We would like you to start making plans to celebrate with us in a few different ways. First, consider joining us in September for the Annual Anniversary Dinner. Our guest speaker is Dr. Craig Mayes, the Director of the New York Rescue Mission, the same mission that Jerry Mcauley started in 1871 that launched the work of Rescue Missions in our country. Second, join us in a night of anniversary celebration on October 24th as we bring Selah to town for a night of inspiration and commemorate the amazing work that God has accomplished in our legacy of ministry. Pay close attention to the remainder of the newsletter for information on how to attend these special events. Third, brush up on your mission history by reading the book, “Lighting the Way Home.” This book was written by local author Gary Warner a few years back when we were recognizing our 100 year anniversary. It is an engaging book that shows the continuity of service and the legacy of care in our community. Call Marcia Reeves at 989-752-6051 ext. 131 to receive your complimentary copy today.

We look forward to recognizing the amazing work that has occurred in our region for the last 110 years. I hope you can join us as we celebrate our legacy of care this fall!

Wes Butcher is the new volunteer driver for City Rescue Mission. Three times a week, Wes transports men who are currently staying at the Mission to and from appointments and their place of employment.

Wes and his wife Gayla, who is also a Rescue Ministries volunteer, retired from their moving business after 24 years. While attending a Care Crew meeting at the Rescue Mission, Wes learned that the Mission’s Moving Forward program was in need of a volunteer driver to transport men to and from appointments and jobs. The position was a perfect fit for a man who drove for a living and it’s something he enjoys.

One of the Mission guests asked him, “Why do you do this?” He said because he believes in what the Mission is doing to help them get their lives back on track and that “God is in it.” In addition to being a volunteer driver, Wes and his wife volunteer at the annual Community Village Strawberry Festival and are a part of the Mission’s Care Crew where they represent their local church, Swan Valley United Methodist. The Care Crew is a network for church members to get involved with Mission happenings and to share their church happenings as well. Wes also invites his friends in the Christian Motorcycle Association to volunteer. The group has taken a liking to the Strawberry Festival and lends a helping hand in the Strawberry Shortcake tent. The Mission is looking for additional

volunteers for the Moving Forward Employment Readiness Program including drivers and life skills instructors.

For more information contact Volunteer Director Nancy Hillenbrand at 989-752-6051 ext. 122.

At 26, Thomas felt that it didn’t look good to tell people he was “living with his Momma!”

He remembered his family (his great- grandmother in particular) talking about the Rescue Mission being a place for people to go who needed help.

He joined the Potters

Touch Ministry after being invited by another Mission guest and took a seasonal job at UPS.
