Helping Res Houston By Elizabeth Riccio To quote someone named Terri Marshall, ”The holiday season is a perfect time to reflect on our blessings and seek out ways to make life better for those around us.” A third-grader from Mr. Taylor’s class,
Stephanie Monaco (8 years old), shows us that no matter how young or old, and no matter how rich or poor, giving is something that anyone can do, at any time, during the year. The following words are what Stephanie wrote in her letter to the students and teachers of Resurrection School in Houston, Texas: To the Students and Teachers of the Resurrection School in Houston,
My name is Stephanie and I am 8 years old and in the 3rd Grade at Resurrection School in Rye, NY. I felt sad that you had a hurricane and your school and houses were destroyed in the hurricane. I wanted to help you so for my birthday I asked for my friends and family to give Barnes & Noble gift cards instead of gifts. I received a generous amount of gift cards. I hope that your school is fixed, and you are having fun in school. I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving and have a very Merry Christmas.
From your friend, Stephanie.”
Stephanie is a perfect example of what Jesus
wants us to be like. Thank you, Stephanie, for reminding us what is most important during this season of giving...it is more blessed to give than to receive.
Helping the People of
Puerto Rico by
By Victoria Tafur & Lesley Lachman
Mr. Phil Cowdell came to Resurrection School to
discuss details about the tragedy that is Puerto
Rico’s current state. Puerto Rico just went through a
horrible hurricane. Mr. Cowdell discussed how he
helped the people of Puerto Rico. Many people lost
everything. He went there to donate goods such as
food, water, clothing, and to volunteer his time. All
the students sent them cards wishing victims safe
and happy holidays. We pray for the recovery of the
people of Puerto Rico.

2ND ANNUAL RES
ICE CREAM SOCIAL
By Isabella Mittag This year’s “Ice Cream Social” was a great
way to kick off the new school year!!
Students, families, and friends were able
to attend this enjoyable occasion. At the
ice cream social, everyone could enjoy free
ice cream. Everyone was able to choose
from a variety of toppings, such as gummy
bears, sprinkles, or cherries, while topped
with whipped cream. If they wanted
something other than ice cream, students
and their families were able to get an
Italian ice in various flavors such as blue
raspberry, cherry, rainbow, or lemon.
There were photo opportunities and a DJ
who played music to dance too. At the end
of the social, it was announced that this
year’s play would be “Beauty and the
Beast.” The RES Ice Cream Social is a
great tradition that should be continued.
Book fair
By Lesley Lachman
The Scholastic Book Fair came to Resurrection! The book fair was a lot of fun. There were books, posters, and several other things for school. Each teacher had their own box where they put books they liked. They also made book recommendations. Every grade had a chance to visit the fair during the course of the week. There were books for all ages, from little picture books to lengthy eighth-grade level books. So many kids said so many good things. “The book fair had good books and I loved the unicorn poster,” said an excited fourth grader. “The reading ranch was so awesome,” said a fifth grader. In my opinion, I think the book fair was great! Overall, the book fair was a success!

Looking Into Christmas
St. Nicholas
by Keira Palmer St. Nick, also known as Santa Claus, was a fourth century saint and was chosen to be one of the bishops of Myra. Nicholas was born in Asia Minor in the Roman Empire as an only child. His parents were both Christian and both tragically died in an epidemic. He had to be raised by his uncle, the bishop of Netara. His uncle mentored him as a reader and later ordained him as a priest. Nickolas had a giving heart from a young age. In one incident, he gave a repayment to three poor girls whose father was going to sell them into slavery. His feast day is on December 6th.
Foreign Christmas Traditions
By Keira Palmer, Elizabeth Carriere, and Nicolas Kravets
Germans have a very interesting Christmas tradition. This tradition is a pickle ornament. The pickle ornament is very special to German families. After they decorate their tree, parents hide the pickle ornament among the boughs. When the children see the decorated tree for the first time, they hunt for the hidden ornament, knowing that the lucky child who finds it will receive an extra little gift from St. Nicholas. In France, they put out little Saints and make a yule log-shaped cake called the buche de noes which means ”Christmas log.” French children have a different kind of Santa as well. French children receive gifts from Pere Noel who wears wooden shoes and carries his Christmas gifts in a basket strapped to his back. Christmas is very different in Russia. This is because Russians celebrate Christmas on New Year’s Eve. Their traditions include going to their local Orthodox Church. Some common gifts in Russia are nesting dolls and Russian laquer bowls. It is also common to see 12 dishes filled with lenton bread dipped in honey and garlic at Christmas dinner.
A Day in the Life of an Elf By Elizabeth Carriere and Keira Palmer Hi, my name is Jingle! Every day I come to your house and go back to the North Pole. When you wake up, I enjoy watching you look for me. Everyday I hide in a different spot. Sometimes I hide in a silly spot, and sometimes I hide in an obvious spot. I also have a pet reindeer. His name is Jolly. I fly on him to your house. I also write you notes to spread Christmas cheer. I tell Santa if you’ve been good or bad, so I hope you’re being good. HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!
FACULTY NEWS! Congratulations to Mr.
Mackenzie on the birth of his daughter, Lillian

Resurrection Spirit Day
2017
By Keira Palmer and Nocolas Kravets
This year, Resurrection School had an
exciting Spirit Day!
At the Grammar
School, they had a new
and fun event called
“Trunk or Treat.” Trunk or
Treat is when parents have
the trunks of their car
decorated for Halloween
and filled with candy for
children. There was also a
refreshment stand for water. The children were
able to “trick-or-treat” at each car to receive
candy. Everybody had fun and enjoyed seeing
the various trunk decorations. This should
become an annual event at Resurrection.
At the Middle School, the students were
treated to a huge and delicious breakfast,
which included
Dunkin Donut
munchkins and
donuts, bacon, eggs,
fruit, chocolate or
regular milk, and
water. At the end of
the breakfast, everyone received candy corn. It
was an enjoyable way to start the day at
Resurrection!
During the day, students also were
treated to an exciting assembly. In the
gymnasium, there was a traveling
planetarium. After we crawled inside what
looked like a huge bubble, we learned many
new things about space and the planets. We
also learned that Pluto is a “dwarf planet.”
We learned how Native Americans
created names for the groups of stars such as
the Big and Little Dippers. Some students were
chosen to help point the laser at the planets or
stars. It was a fun experience that will never be
forgotten.
All Resurrection students were able to either
wear spirit wear or their gym uniforms. New
students also had an opportunity to meet
new people or to talk to friends in
different classes. In my opinion, Spirit Day was
a bountiful amount of fun! Many thanks are
expressed to the parents who helped in any way
for these fun events.

Thank You, Veterans By Carmine & Eugenia Rem
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13) Veterans Day celebrates and honors the service of all United States military veterans. Veterans are men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces. Mr. Marko Kostovic is an Army veteran, who served two tours in Iraq, in 2005 and 2007. He is the father of two children who attend Resurrection Kindergarten, Petra and Luka. Mr. Kostovic courageously earned a Bronze Star and Combat Action Badge during his time in active service. In addition to jumping out of airplanes and riding in tanks, Mr. Kostovic is an accomplished lacrosse athlete. Mr. Kostovic graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2004. Being a West Point graduate is an exceptional honor. Mr. Kostovic exemplifies the qualities of outstanding character, intelligence, and leadership. For the children whose parents have died serving our country, there are organizations that raise money for the children’s education. Mr. Kostovic and his wife, Ana Kostovic, continue to serve our country by assisting organizations like Funds for Children of Fallen Patriots and The 500 for the Fallen. Mrs. Ana Kostovic believes in the strong family bond that exists between servicemen, servicewomen, and their families. Our family was personally blessed to have crossed paths with the Kostovic family. Mr. Marko Kostovic has an equally incredible brother, Josip Kostovic, who has shown great kindness and compassion. We are truly privileged to have the Kostovic family in our Resurrection family. Let us thank God for the men and women who continue to serve our great nation today.
MOVIE REVIEW
Big Hero 6
By Elizabeth Carriere
Big Hero 6 is a cartoon about
a boy named Hiro who fights
the evil of Robert Callahan
with his marshmallow-looking
robot/healthcare companion,
Baymax. This movie is full of
action and cool graphics. It also illustrates the
importance of love and friendship. In my
opinion, this was a great movie and I give it
10 out of 10 stars. I am recommending that
everyone watches it.
Wonder
By Keira Palmer and
Gwen Mobilia
In the movie, Wonder, the main character is a child named August (Auggie) who was born with a facial deformity. He was home-schooled until fifth grade. He was bullied by other students because he looked different. People also judged him on how he ate because he was not able to chew with his mouth closed. Even his sister pretended not to know him. He had a NASA helmet that covered his head, and his favorite holiday was Halloween because he could hide his face. There were two children in school who became his friends – Summer and Jack Will. He and Summer formed a club for kids with names that have to do with Summer. He played ”lightsabers” with Jack Will after school. At the end of the movie, everyone decides to be Auggie’s friend, because they realized he was a normal kid who likes to do all the same things, just like everyone else. They realized you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Overall we give this 4 ½ out of five stars. Thank you to Mr. John Partilla and the Screenvision team for providing a private screening of Wonder.
