You, as a homeowner, generally have two choices when it comes to hiring a designer for your prop-erty...a landscape contractor or a Landscape Architect. Often, a landscape contractor will “throw in a design for free” if you use them to install your landscape, especially on minor and “cookie-cutter” projects. But if you are looking for an original and intelligent creation, a comprehensive design solution, you recognize the value of working directly with a seasoned design professional, and are comfortable with paying for quality design, than we may be the fi rm for you.

Objective planning and designRDA provides an objective landscape master plan for your property that is creative, functional and budget conscious. We are not affi liated with any landscape contractor or nursery and are therefore not married to any single style of material or plant supply. This frees us up to specify many types of landscape materials and elements and insures a “custom’ design for your property. We listen to you and your family and strive to incorporate all of your wishes into a design.

Spatial designWe think of the potential of your property as a series of spaces that are linked together rather than simply a place to fi ll up with plants. We utilize our strong problem-solving skills and concentrate on a big-picture approach to design and subsequently hone in on the details. Although we design small portions of a property, the most effi cient use of our services is for an overall concept and design for your entire property. A building Architect will design your home as a series of rooms that all fl ow together and we do the same for the outside of the house.

Low-impact and contextual designWe always try to work with the land and preserve as many natural features of a site as possible. This includes trees and plants, landforms, drainage patterns, views into and out of the property, the local context and history and the surrounding landscape of a piece of land. This helps convey a sense of permanence to make a new or renovated landscape appear as if it has existed for years.

Budget-consciousBudget-conscious doesn’t necessarily mean we are looking to come up with the cheapest solution for your property. What it does mean is that we will strive to work within your own budget. You should have a general idea of what you would like to spend on the exterior of your home, which will affect the complexity of a design, but it should never affect the quality. Don’t be afraid to let us know your budget…we don’t want to design a landscape that costs $100,000 when you only want to spend $20,000.

WAGNER RESIDENCEGlen Cove, New York

The view of Hempstead Harbor from this new waterfront home is framed by two 100-year old Copper Beech trees. These trees anchor a recessed patio and ad-jacent refl ecting pool to provide outdoor living space. A new wind-ing brick path leads to a front en-trance courtyard with a fountain focal point. The planting scheme includes ornamental grasses, fl owering perennials and low ev-ergreen shrubs.

LOEFFLER RESIDENCEFire Island, New York

The two main factors that dictated this design were deer-proofi ng plant material and creating privacy for the front porch deck area from the street. Since cars are not permitted in this area of Fire Island, the bicycle is the cho-sen mode of transportation, so a “parking area” was designed into the front entrance. Plants were chosen for their salt-spray and wind tolerance.

HINTEMAN RESIDENCEHead-of-the-Harbor, New York

This existing 4-year old home had only basic foundation planting and lawn over two acres. We devel-oped a landscape master plan that created a series of outdoor rooms and spaces defi ned by formal al-lees of fl owering trees. Amenities include swimming pool, terraces, play area, curvilinear paths for children’s bike riding and skate-boarding, outdoor storage and plant masses to provide transition between sections of the property.

WILLOW LAKE APARTMENTSSmithtown, New York

This luxury apartment complex is centered around a spring-fed lake that empties into a local tributary of the Nissequogue River. We developed a plant scheme that emphasizes the use of native and indigenous plants, bio-fi ltering of storm water runoff and four seasons of visual interest. This project was completed in phases over fi ve years and was credited with increasing a positive fi rst-impression and overall feel of the community.

AVALONBAY @ CORAMCoram, New York

We developed landscape de-sign concepts and co-designed portions of the new 18-hole golf course that is the prime amenity for this project. Land-scaping of the clubhouse uses masses of groundcover to sta-bilize slopes and frame views out over the golf course. Plans also called for the thinning of portions of existing woods to provide views and access to the golf course.

AVALON @ PLAINVIEWPlainview, New York

This upscale complex of luxury apartments is being developed on a former in-dustrial site. A central open space and the areas around the units are heavily planted and a children’s play area and adult seating wall was devel-oped for residents and visi-tors. Plants are primarily na-tive and massed along the site perimeter to create a dense buffer and screen.
