1 Hardware and Software RequirementsIntroduction

Introduction

With an OpenLab CDS Client/Server installation, you need multiple hardware components. On Analytical Instrument Controllers (AICs) and clients, the OpenLab CDS software provides the CDS components. On the server, the OpenLab Server software provides the Shared Services and Content Management components.

For configurations with more than one server, you will get a starter pack with two OpenLab Server software licenses; in addition you will need an OpenLab Content Management Index server.

OpenLab CDS can be deployed as a• 1-server all-in-one system (Figure 1 on page 9),• 2-server system (with the database hosted on a separate machine, see

Figure 2 on page 9),• 4-server system (with Content Management and Shared Services on the first

server, the database on the second server, the Index server on the third server, and the file server on the fourth server, see Figure 3 on page 10), or

• as a Scalable System. For more information on scalable systems, please refer to the Agilent OpenLab Server and OpenLab ECM XT Scalable System installation guide (available from the Documentation tab of the OpenLab installer).

Consult with your Agilent support representative to decide which topology is appropriate for your environment. The following diagrams are a conceptual representation of the system topology. They are not intended to represent the topology's network architecture.

1 Hardware and Software RequirementsHardware Recommendations

ServerThe following recommended hardware specifications are for reference purposes. For more details, please refer to the Agilent OpenLab Server and OpenLab ECM XT Hardware and Software Requirements Guide (ECM_XT_HardwareSoftwareRequirements.pdf).

The hardware specifications should be adjusted based on the actual usage pattern in the lab. For example, if a lab acquires larger files as compared to those listed for a typical usage pattern in Table 6 on page 17, consider adding additional disk storage or using an external NAS system for storing files.

1 Hardware and Software RequirementsNumber of Instruments

Number of Instruments

The instrument capacity or number of configurable instruments per Workstation or AIC depends on the type of instrument configured. Any configuration of instruments that sums up to a maximum of 6 instrument points per AIC is supported. If a CDS client is co-installed on the AIC, a maximum of 4 instrument points is supported.

Per OpenLab CDS client/server system, you can configure a maximum of up to 100 instrument points.

Instrument An analytical system, made up of one of more modules, that are configured together to achieve the desired analytical functionality. Also known as a system, i.e. an LC/MSD system.

Points The relative level of load (load value) that an instrument or module puts on a physical or virtual system, aggregating CPU and RAM (memory) consumption. Different types of detectors require more processing power and memory than others, so they have been assigned higher “point” values.

Connections Connection Licenses refer to the licenses required in the software in order to run a specific instrument configuration. Note: Points do not equal instrument connection licenses.

Client and AIC version must be the same in all AIC configurations.

1 Hardware and Software RequirementsVirtualization

Virtualization

Clients

OpenLab CDS has been tested with the following virtualization software. Note that the resource requirements are equal to those of the physical machines.• VMware vSphere• Terminal Server/Remote Desktop Services• Hyper-V for Windows Server• Citrix XenApp

AICs

Virtualizing AICs is supported with VMWare vSphere. However, it is not recommended to virtualize AICs.

Server

Virtualizing OpenLab CDS Servers is supported with VMWare vSphere.

Please refer to VMWare support for performance optimization recommendations. Some considerations are:• Dedicated resources allocated to the server. The virtual machine must meet

the hardware and software requirements specified in the Agilent OpenLab Server and OpenLab ECM XT Hardware and Software Requirements Guide available from Setup\Docs\EN\ECM_XT_HardwareSoftwareRequirements.pdf.

• Do not take a snapshot of the virtual machine• Potential performance overhead by using the virtual infrastructure

It is not recommended to use a Windows Server virtual machine with the network teaming feature. With this configuration, OpenLab CDS cannot retrieve the MAC address of a network team interface. If you must use this configuration, an

NOTE Be aware of a potential conflict when using an All-in-one Citrix environment: Both Citrix and OpenLab CDS use port 27000 for the License Manager Daemon. See “Firewall Settings” on page 37.

System Preparation Tool

The System Preparation Tool (SPT) checks and applies Windows settings on your machine. The majority of the steps are automated by the tool. Applying these settings helps avoid issues during installation and use of the product.

Prerequisites Copy the entire content of the USB media to a local drive or centralized folder, then remove the USB media from the PC.

1 To open the installer, right-click the setup.exe file, and run it as administrator.

2 The OpenLab Installer checks if the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is present and enabled. If it is not, the installer automatically tries to install and activate it.

NOTE If User Account Control (UAC) is switched on, this step requires active confirmation to continue.

2 Network RequirementsIntroduction

Introduction

OpenLab CDS systems rely on network infrastructure in order to support the communication between various system nodes. This communication is based on standard TCP/IP protocols. In order to provide optimum performance and uptime, the network must meet design criteria for available bandwidth, IP address assignment, name resolution and appropriate isolation of the lab subnet from the corporate network.

Use of other network topologies, such as wide area networks (WAN), are considered non- standard configurations and it is your responsibility to ensure performance to these specifications. The Agilent Support team can only investigate issues using standard LAN configurations and cannot troubleshoot issues caused by non- standard network configurations.

The following diagram gives an overview of OpenLab network recommendations. Depending on the OpenLab products you have configured, your network may or may not include all of the network components described here.

2 Network RequirementsLAN Communications

LAN Communications

When using LAN communications to connect workstations or instrument controllers to an instrument, use one of these methods:• Connect via an isolated switch using standard CAT-5 network cabling• LAN communication hardware should be 100/1000 mbps (or higher) speed

capable.

• NIC teaming1: LAN cards should not be teamed on workstations, instrument controllers, or clients.

• LAN communication must be on the same subnet as instruments, and preferably on the same segment.

LAN Power ManagementAvoid data capture or transfer interruptions in your data acquisition system by making LAN communication cards available for instrument and system component communications.

Windows may be set to turn instruments/components off to save power while sleeping or hibernating. To change this setting:

1 In the Microsoft Control Panel, open the Network and Sharing Center2.2 Select Change adapter settings. Right-click Local Area Connection> Properties>

Configure.3 Select the Power Management tab.4 Clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box.

NOTE The J4100 Jet Direct Card is not supported. For example, use a G1369 LAN interface card instead.

1 Network Interface Card (NIC) teaming is also known as Load Balancing and Failover (LBFO)

NOTE See the separate driver installation guides for further information regarding vendor specific instrument connections. GPIB or RS232 might be required.

2 Network RequirementsLAN Communications

Domain RequirementsOpenLab CDS Client/Server systems are only supported in a domain environment.

Domains support the flow of information and user access rights across machines in the network. This means that all machines and instruments within the networked OpenLab CDS system must reside within the same domain or have the appropriate cross domain trusts to allow name-based communications between all components in the system.Installing OpenLab CDS will apply network exceptions to the Windows firewall under the domain profile to result in a functional system. The components necessary to support OpenLab CDS on a domain are:• Domain controller — broadcasts the domain name and negotiates access to

machines.• Domain name server (DNS) — maintains records of what hostnames belong to

which IP on the network. This component is always required for effective components communications in networked systems.

• Active directory — maintains the list of users and their access rights on the domain.

The domain components above host a variety of services and settings that must be configured appropriately to allow communication across machines. The following services and settings will need to be configured to fit your domain. Your internal IT group is responsible for proper configuration of any custom domain solutions. These include settings for:• Lookup zones and hostnames• Group and security policies• Subnet masks and Virtual LANs• IP reservation (static or DHCP)

NOTE The domain name server (DNS) must be able to resolve the IPv4 address of all instrument controllers and instruments. Any unresolved instrument controller or instrument will disrupt the functionality of OpenLab resulting in errors or delays. IPv6 is not supported and must be deactivated.

NOTE OpenLab CDS components must not be installed on the same machine as the domain controller.

2 Network RequirementsSpecific Requirements for Compliant Systems

Specific Requirements for Compliant Systems

If you intend to use your system in a compliant environment, ensure the following settings related to time synchronization:• Your network must have a time synchronization service to make sure that all

systems are using a consistent and valid time.• To ensure that users cannot change the time on a client system, users must

not operate using an administrator account. This is important as the client time is used during buffered activity logging during network outages.

2 Network RequirementsNetwork Isolation

Network Isolation

There must be an isolated local area network or VLAN between an instrument controller and the instrument. This is a critical real- time connection.

An OpenLab CDS Client/Server system should be isolated from network environments that experience frequent failures due to faulty switching, viruses, or worms. If network isolation is not possible, the machines should be reconfigured and disconnected from the problematic network until these issues can be resolved. On an isolated network, name resolution services must be hosted by a separate machine to enable proper communications between system components by name.

An isolated network is completely physically isolated, so that no LAN switch connections on the network are shared with the corporate network infrastructure. Figure 5 on page 51 shows a simple client/server topology. In this example, the connection highlighted in red provides isolation of the system.

3 Supported InstrumentsRC.NET Drivers and OpenLab CDS

RC.NET Drivers and OpenLab CDS

OpenLab CDS can control instruments and modules that use RC.NET based driver software only.

Agilent and other vendors may release RC.net drivers independent of the OpenLab CDS releases. Agilent recommends that you always use the most recent firmware revisions. They include all latest firmware features and improvements. Agilent driver software is forward compatible with respect to firmware, i.e. the firmware can be updated without the need of updating the driver or CDS.

The following Agilent instrument driver software revisions are part of the OpenLab CDS 2.5 software package. Some of them are installed by default with the software.

NOTE Instrument driver versions must always match in a network system.

Accidental use of a method from a different driver version, and accidental launching of an AIC instrument from a client with a mismatched driver version will have unpredictable behavior, including subtle errors that might not be spotted immediately.

Agilent LCMost Agilent LC modules can be controlled with the current version of OpenLab CDS. LC driver release 3.1 has been tested with this revision and is installed by default with the software.

Recommended Firmware

Agilent recommends using current LC firmware sets with your OpenLab CDS. The latest LC firmware sets are 7.01, 6.50, and 6.30. Current FW revisions can be downloaded from https://www.agilent.com/en-us/firmwareDownload?whid=69761

Please note that some driver features like valve-thermostat clusters and new temperature control modes require current firmware versions. For more information please refer to the respective LC driver release notes. The Release Note for Agilent LC and CE Drivers Revision A.02.19 SR2 (LC-Driver_ReleaseNote_A0219-SR2.pdf) is available in the Docs/EN folder of the OpenLab CDS media.

Firmware revisions are grouped into sets for each module or system. Firmware sets include just the latest firmware of each module.

Do not mix firmware revisions from one set with older or newer sets. Firmware is not tested across set borders!

Download the latest LC Firmware at http://www.agilent.com/en-us/firmwareDownload?whid=99818. For more information see Agilent LC Firmware News / Downloads / Procedures at https://www.agilent.com/en/support/liquid-chromatography/lcfirmwarenews.

the latest release.

Liquid Chromatography (LC) Modules

The Agilent LC modules listed in tables Table 30 on page 57 to Table 37 on page 64 are supported for control with OpenLab CDS2.5 unless stated otherwise.

NOTE Modules combined into one LC instrument always need to have firmware from the same set. Firmware of one set is fully compatible with your CDS that supports this firmware set. However, if one module uses a firmware revision lower that the specified Minimum Firmware Revision some functionality might not be supported.

NOTE The Agilent LC drivers are backwards compatible. Modules with identical Product Numbers are supported, even if the tables below list only the name of the current model version. 1100 Series models are supported on a best effort basis only. For more details please refer to the driver Release Notes of the driver revision you are using.

You can find the Product Number at the lower right of each module or system.
