I am sad to see this happen because this year has been fun and full of exciting experiences for me. I had quite a few “firsts” this year. My first time going to the ARBA Convention, my first time walking in a 4-H Parade, my first time being the head of a committee, and many others, too many to mention. I had the chance to go to the Orange County Youth Expo, I had a great time. I am also going to go to 4-H Summer Camp which I have never been away from home for that long. I am so looking forward to meeting up with all my 4-H friends and having a good time. I am going to try and organize a Bake Sale to help earn money for Summer Camp. So if anyone reading this would like to join me in this venture please contact me at: [email protected] and I am sure we can make this work for us. 4-H this year has been a really fun year. I have learned a lot and will for sure be in it next year. I am going to be in the Rabbit, Cavy, Small Goat, & Jewelry Making projects. I know that I will continue to learn more about these projects as the next year starts and comes to an end. I will for sure report back to ya’ll and the end of next year so look for the next chapter in my 4-H adventure…

Hi, my name is Rebekah Hickman and I am a senior member in the Tumbleweeds 4-H Club. Last year I went to the train the trainer for the Power of the Wind. The training was a lot of fun, and I thought I should bring some of this interesting information back to our county. It involved a lot of hands-on learning. Over the two-day training we made wind powered “boats”, wind powered pulleys, and lots of pinwheels! I even made a miniature Disneyland that lit up and played “It's a Small World”. The Power of the Wind is designed to raise awareness of the usefulness of wind. This summer I am leading the Power of the Wind project. 4-H members of all ages throughout Riverside County can participate. The meetings will be held at the Moreno Valley 4-H Office during the week from 6-8pm, end of July through August, dates to be announced. There will be 8 meetings altogether. We will be doing the following:

* Wind powered boat * Observing and measuring wind * Lifting loads * Electricity * Turbines * Wind farms * Art and literature * Finish project & record books After each meeting we will update record books, so bring your record book to every meeting. Please let me know if you are interested in attending so that I can get enough supplies for everyone. My email is [email protected].

Santa Rosa Plateau Foundation – Cowboy Jubilee invites 4H members to come show their stuff on Saturday July 17th 10am to 6pm at the Murrieta Equestrian Center. 4H will have a booth available for members to come and do demonstrations or hang display boards. The guidelines are that we depict cowboy lifestyle or ranch life. Use your imagination, be original, come and have fun. Demonstration will be scheduled every 30 to 60 minutes depending on how many 4H

members sign up. Space will be provided; you supply everything you need including clean up. Animals are welcome but must be related to cowboy or ranch life. Animals may NOT be left unattended. Each member that signs up will receive a custom t-shirt for the event. Questions ??? Contact Susan at: [email protected]

Help Staff 4-H Booth at California State Fair Once again The California 4-H Foundation is recruiting 4-H members and leaders to help staff the 4-H booth at the California State Fair (July 14 - August 1). This is a great opportunity for 4-H members and volunteers to share with the public their 4-H experiences, as well as, the wide range of projects and leadership opportunities that are available to youth through participation in the California 4-H Youth Development Program. Small 4-H projects are welcome to accompany you (robots, rabbits, arts/crafts, service dogs, etc.) to give the public a “feel” for what types of projects are available. Examples of service projects also make for good stories to share with the public. Please feel free to bring photo albums or record books with you to show anyone who may be interested in learning even more about your 4-H project. Parking passes and fair admission tickets will be provided to 4-H members and adults who sign up for a 2-hour shift. A maximum of 4 youth and 2 adults per shift will be allowed. Each shift must have two adults in the booth at all times. To sign-up, please visit: http://ucce.ucdavis.edu/survey/survey.cfm?surveynumber=4887

The 4-H State Leadership Conference (SLC) brings together high school youth from across California in a four-day leadership training, networking, and learning experience. The conference provides advanced leadership training for high school 4-H members. The conference is an opportunity for 4-H members to network and share ideas with other 4-Hers from across the state. The conference focuses on providing high school youth with experiential education on leadership development, civic engagement, college admissions and other 4-Hproject areas. This year the conference is being held at UC Davis July 29th - August 1st, 2010. Please contact your local 4-H county office to register for this amazing event! Please contact Quang "Hogan" Tong for more information at 530-752-5644 or via email at [email protected] or your local State Ambassador.

Turtles and Tortoises, how fun! Proposed By: Susan Marsh I have talked to several 4H members who have turtles and/or tortoises. Would anyone like to get together and learn more about their shelled friends?

We would make it a county project, open to any county 4H member. We could have the meetings in different areas or in a central location for the members that are

interested. We could have speakers come talk about the proper care

and feeding. We could explore different housing options. We could go to some reptile and tortoise

shows. We can even plan a tortoise/turtle show of our own.

If this sounds like fun let me know, [email protected]

619-840-6332

Would you like to share your 4-H experience with another 4-H'er that lives across the country? A group of 4-H'ers in the state of Maine are wishing to begin a pen

pal project with a California 4-H group. If you are interested please contact Pat English at:

[email protected] or 530-754-8520.

Poultry Show Report Three Riverside County 4-H members and their families attended the San Bernardino County Fair poultry show in Victorville, California on May 14-15th. Members from the Norco Mustangs 4-H Club included Heather Ross and myself, Amanda Penicks; Alexis Nachtmann represented Perris Panthers 4-H Club. I entered 10 birds showing Old English Game, Modern Game, Wyandotte, and a Large Brahma hen. I received Best RCCL (rose comb clean legged), Reserve Champion Bantam of Show & Reserve Champion of Show with the Wyandotte hen. Best Asiatic with the Brahma hen. I also received 2- best of breed, 2-reserve breed, and many best variety, reserve varieties, and first place ribbons. I was not able to compete in showmanship as I was at Southern Sectional Field Day running the entomology department. Heather Ross entered birds but do to some confusion of fair personal her birds were not judged because they were still locked from the night before. Alexis Nachtmann exhibited 11 birds. She received the following awards: Champion Waterfowl, Reserve Champion Waterfowl, Champion Standard Duck, Reserve Champion Standard Duck, Champion Large Bird of Show, Reserve Champion Large Bird of Show, Champion Bantam Duck, Best American, Best Mediterranean, Best Continental, and Best SCCL (single comb clean legged).

San Bernardino County Fair Dog Show Riverside County 4-H clubs attended the dog show in great numbers. We had members in each division competing in showmanship, obedience, knowledge, breed identification, and agility. Mariah and Rebekah Hickman represented the Tumbleweeds. Nathan Bonde represented Perris Panthers, and I represented the Norco Mustangs. I know that we had all four of the Rebekah’s (Rebecca) showing but I’m sorry I don’t know their club names. It was a crazy day for the Rebekah’s who were showing in the horse show. They made many, many trips back and forth from the horse arena to the dog arena. I would love to list everyone’s winnings but I don’t have all the information.

Perris Panthers 4H Activity Report 4-27-10 On April 25th, 2010, the Perris Panthers Goat Project went on a field trip to a breeder. It was exciting because we were going to a Nigerian Dwarf Goat Breeder. When we got there, first we vaccinated a baby goat and then we went down and saw the breeders goat herd. There were about seven bucks and twelve does. She let us go in with them and talked to us about vitamins and vaccinations that they need. She also talked to us about nutrition and shared some of her breeding stories with us. She had many beautiful flowers and plants as well. We all had a fun trip. On March 24th, 2010 our gardening project went to a Enicia Fisher’s home where we learned how to make a worm bin. She showed us how to harvest worms from those bins. Also, we learned how to get the compost in our gardens from the worms. She taught us how to turn the bins and what to put in them for the best results. We planted some lavender and she gave us seeds for our own gardens at home. This trip was interesting and I would like to make my own worm bin. Goat Adventures with the Tumbleweed Club

On April 19th, 2010, the Tumbleweed 4H Club had their goat project meeting and I went as well. Danie Frey came to the meeting and showed us how to draw blood from our goats so that we can have them tested. Rebecca Hickman, Victoria Hickman and I drew blood with Danie’s help. After we finished with the blood drawing, we put it in a vial and sent it to be tested

for CAE, CL and Jones. Those are goat diseases that are important to make sure that our goats are healthy. I was a little nervous about drawing blood but Danie supported us and made sure that we did it correctly. It was easier than I thought it would be thanks to Danie’s help

Perris Panthers Goat Happenings

We have had an exciting time in the Goat Project this year! We have had a guest speaker come and talk about CL and CAE and many of us have tested our goats this year for that. We have had goat trivia and goat bowl night, learned what to have in a birthing kit, made goat soap and delicious goat ice cream. We had a vet came and talked to our goat and horse group about being a vet, animal

health and showed us all her COOL vet tools! April 26th we went to Kivuli Kids Nigerians in Yucaipa, Ca. We learned MANY things about "Goat Management". One thing we learned about was Biosecurity which Kivukli Kids pride itself in. We all put surgical booties and sanitized our hands before touring the Farm. We learned diseases can easily be transferred from one goat farm to another by shoes or hands. We also learned about vaccinations (watched a goat kid get 1st CDT Shot), goat kidding (looked at Doe almost ready to kid), feed (looked at different pellets, sunflower seeds, minerals), and conformation (looked at different Bucks/Does body conformation). We had a great time! Any 4H Goat Club that would like to learn more, Kivuli Kids is always willing to do tours! In May we did a “Show and Tell” Presentation about our goats to a preschool. We split up into groups and presented Goat Milking, Goat Body Parts, Feed/Care of Goats, and did a game "Pin The Udder On The Nannie". The preschool kids LOVED our games and presentations! They loved petting the goats and thought it was exciting to milk an actual goat. By putting our puzzle together of "Goat Body Parts" many preschoolers knew by the end of our visit basic goat body parts. We were happy to share our knowledge and information about goats with the young children. We look forward to visiting more schools next year and presenting our Goat Information. Any other Goat Project Group (or any other 4H Project Group) who would like present with us at future schools just email and we can set something up! A reminder to everyone about upcoming Goat shows……Open Goat Show June 5th in Chino put on by the Lost Valley Goat Association. This is a neat show because it is ADGA Sancationed, 3 shows in one day and it is a LOCAL show that you can show your BUCKS at. Also 4H Dairy Goat Show June 26th at Del Mar Fair. We have been excited to show and learn about goats this year! Our Perris Panthers would love to meet with other Goat Projects and have a Goat Bowl Night!

Because of 4-H." An Opportunity for 4-H Alumni to Share THEIR Stories! The California 4-H Foundation is about to launch a new alumni program. We need your amazing stories of how your life has been shaped "Because of 4-H." This will allow us to refocus on our most important message and image of the incredible people that 4-H helps create-- people who, because of their 4-H experience are stepping up to today's challenges and making an impact. We are looking to our 4-H alumni to help us create the larger 4-H story as we weave this rich and varied tapestry. We see each day how 4-H creates focused, articulate, compassionate and engaged young leaders. We also see that the knowledge, skills and experiences gained through participation in 4-H transcend youth. Now, we are inviting you - our 4-H alumni - to share how 4-H has shaped your life as an adult. What have you been able to accomplish because of 4-H? What have been the long-term benefits to you and your family because of 4-H? What are the most memorable aspects of your experience with 4-H? Please visit: http://ucce.ucdavis.edu/survey/survey.cfm?surveynumber=4878 to access our online form where you can share your story and submit it directly to the California 4-H Foundation. Please upload any related photo(s) with your form to help illustrate your story. The deadline for these stories is June 30, 2010. We are asking for your input this month so we can complete a creative project in time for an upcoming alumni event which will feature a selection of these stories. If one of your stories is chosen, we'll be reaching out to you and asking for permission to use this story and potentially to feature your story in a future publication or on the website. Keep in mind that this is only the first stage of our collective storytelling. As we move forward, we will provide other platforms that give youth, volunteers and parents as well as alumni the chance to tell their stories to create a powerful accounting of 4-H across California. Questions? Email us at [email protected]

Southern Sectional Field Day Reported By:

Amanda Penicks By looking at the room assignments 21 Riverside County 4-H members attended or at least entered Southern Sectional Field Day held on May 15, 2010. Everything ran smoothly with the exception of the fire alarm going off. I presented an educational display on “The Effect of Chlorine on Mosquito Larvae & Pupae”. I was also the chairperson for the entomology section of the field day. This was my Emerald Star project. I set up an insect identification contest using insects from my own collection and came up with a knowledge test. The hardest part was to pick out insects and knowledge at different levels—beginning, intermediate and advanced. I had a great turn out. I had some very large scary insects that frightened a few people. I would like to thank my mom for watching my insects and giving out tests while I presented my educational display. Our 4-H club, the Norco Mustangs, also chaired the horticulture department or section of the field day. Cynthia Ross our horticulture project leader purchased plants, set up classes to judge and identify, and made up a knowledge quiz. Heather, myself, and my mother helped with carrying all the plants and vegetables from the truck and up and down the stairs. That was a lot of work. Cynthia brought some big potted plants. The horticulture contests seem to be a great hit!

Knowledge Bowl Study Night Report Reported By:

Amanda Penicks Approximately 15 members from various Riverside County 4-H clubs attended the Knowledge Bowl Study Night held in Moreno Valley on May 21st.

Devon Bean brought information on rabbits & cavies

Rebekah Hickman brought dog information Kerri Olobri brought Pygmy and Nigerian goat I, Amanda Penicks, brought information on poultry.

Everything ran smoothly. We had each study team rotate to a new table every 20-30 minutes. Pizza was provided as we studied. Just a reminder—everyone should keep studying on their own with the handouts you took home.

Small Animal Knowledge Bowl Summer Series Just a reminder that the Small Animal Advisory is hosting a summer series of Small Animal Knowledge Bowls. The first in the series is scheduled to take

place at the County 4-H Office in Moreno Valley on Saturday June 19th at 8am. The second in the series is scheduled for August 21st. All members who participate in both Knowledge Bowls will receive a T-shirt. A T-shirt design contest will determine what the shirt looks like. If you would like to submit a design please bring it with you to the first competition on Sat June 19th. For more information or to sign-up as an individual or as a team please contact the Hickmans at (909) 514-1873.
