Executive Summary

The 15th Special Olympics World Summer Games were held in Abu Dhabi from 14-21 March 2019 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE’s Armed Forces. With more than 7,500 athletes from over 190 nations competing, Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 was the largest sports and humanitarian event in the world setting the benchmark for the most unified Games in the 50-year history of the Special Olympics movement. The Local Organization Committee (an entity independent of Special Olympics UAE) was formed in 2017 to organize and prepare for the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019.

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – a federation of seven emirates, or states, formed in 1971: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al-Khaimah and is the largest of the seven Emirates

This was India’s 9th participation at the SO World Summer Games and India participated in 14 out of 24 Olympic-type sports featuring the World Games represented by 281 Athletes (including

26 Unified partners), 71 Coaches and 4 Officials (HOD and AHOD). The SO Bharat contingent were accompanied and assisted by seven staff members, two Photographers and two Media Persons.

Send Off for the World Games

The National Send Off Ceremony held on 4 March 2019 was held at the Frank Anthony Public School New Delhi and was presided by by Ms Aruna Abhey Oswal, PID Lions Clubs International and Founder, Aruna Abhey Oswal Trust. The guests of honor included Mohammad Kaif, former Indian Cricketer and the Ambassador of Ecuador, His Excellency Hector Cueva Jacome. News



H.E. Khalifa Saif Alteneiji, Charge d affaires and Ms Basma Al Saadi, Head Media and Public Diplomacy Embassy of UAE , New Delhi ,visited Jai Ram Ashram on 8 March 2019 when the contingent was scheduled to depart, to wish the Athletes luck. His Excellency ensured that each Athlete was presented a flower!

Preparation for the World Games

The Preparation for the World Games geared up in March 2018 since when National level Camps were held across Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Odisha and Delhi until the contingent departed for the World Games venue in March 2019. The SO Bharat contingent departed for the World Games on 8 March 2019 through five flights. From the Abu Dhabi International Airport they were transported to Dubai for the Host Town Program Host Town- Dubai

The team was driven to Dubai directly from the airport – a very smooth entry and transit for everyone. An intriguing part of entering the UAE was the World Games logo stamped by the Immigration authorities on the Passport!

The Indian Contingent was hosted at the Holiday Inn (Dubai

Festival City) Dubai. They remained there until the 11th when all teams excepting

Athletics and Aquatics were transported to Abu Dhabi.

The Coaches briefing was an integral and constant part of the program, led by Mr Victor R Vaz, Head of the Delegation, held at least once a day, followed by more sessions if required. The areas covered at these sessions ran across discipline, effective Coach- Athlete engagement and personal care of the Athletes, specific to their abilities along with Housekeeping

At the Host town each day commenced with a session of Warm up at the open ground adjoining the hotel. The session began with the whole group beginning together, moving to sport- specific break outs

Motiongate Dubai , a Hollywood-inspired

theme park, the Amity University Dubai , Global Village, the world’s leading multi-cultural park were the other venues visited.

The Amity University combined the delegations from Korea, Uzbekistan and India. All the 630 Athletes were wished luck by the dignitaries present, followed by a rocking session of Zumba and fun at the sprawling campus

of the University



Flame of Hope

The Flame of Hope lighting ceremony of the Special Olympics World Games took place on 27 February at the Zappeion Palace in Athens, Greece, the birthplace of the Olympics. Special Olympics athletes were present at the ceremony alongside the dignitaries. The Flame of Hope then journeyed to Abu Dhabi, sfater having travelled through all the seven emirates and finally, finding its way to the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony of the World Games

Opening Ceremony

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan announced the start of Special Olympics World

Games 2019 at a spectacular Opening Ceremony at Zayed Sports City on Wednesday. The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE’s Armed Forces officially welcomed more than 7,500 athletes and 3,000 coaches, representing 200 nations, for seven days of incredible Olympic-style sports and a celebration of the human spirit.

A number of widely acclaimed music stars and producers, including Grammy Award winner for The Greatest Showman Soundtrack, Music Producer, Greg Wells, and Honorary Executive Producer and 28-time Grammy Winner, Quincy Jones, came together to create the official song for Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019. The anthem, titled Right Where I’m Supposed To Be, was inaugurated at the Opening Ceremony of the World Games .Joining them on the stage in front of more than 40,000 fans at Zayed Sports City Stadium to sing the anthem were three Arabic music stars including Emirati singer and Good Will Ambassador at Large HE Hussain Al Jassmi, Syrian superstar Assala Nasri, and Star of Egypt and the Arab World, Tamer Hosny.

The Athletes from India blended into the spectacle as the environment of celebration touched each and every one present there.



Sports Competitions

The Sports Competitions were held between 15 and 20 March 2019. SO Bharat participated in 14 sports including Unified Basketball, Unified Handball and Unified Football. With 96 medals , Powerlifting won the maximum number of medals

Special Olympics celebrates all athletes with intellectual disabilities (ID), regardless of their level of ability.

Special Olympics ensures good competition through a process called “Divisioning,” which segments athletes

based on abilities. This way, athletes can compete with other athletes of similar abilities and age. Divisions

always include at least three and a maximum of eight athletes

Beyond Sports

Golisano Global Health Leadership Award The Golisano Foundation and Special Olympics honored Dr. Ashok Dhoble for bringing essential health care services to the most marginalized people on earth, those with intellectual disabilities (ID). Dr. Ashok Dhoble, the Honorary Secretary General for the Indian Dental Association (IDA), collaborated with Special Olympics and the IDA to sign an MOU committing to year-round access to oral healthcare to Bharat athletes and caregivers

Named after the philanthropist and Paychex founder Tom Golisano, the award was presented to seven recipients at a ceremony held yesterday at the Hotel Ritz Carlton, in Abu Dhabi at the 2019 Special Olympics World Games. The other nations to have received this honour were: China, Kenya, Belgium, Paraguay, Jordan and USA

Global Youth Leadership Summit

Over 150 Youth leaders with and without Intellectual Disabilities from more than 35 nations converged at the Global Youth Leadership Summit that started on 14 March at the New York University Abu Dhabi, UAE . The summit would offer a platform for the youth leaders from nations all over the world to share their best practices and develop innovative projects to implement the Inclusive vision of Special Olympics in their home communities around the world. An Exhibition of initiatives thought of and designed by each of the youth teams representing different National programs was held at ADNEC on 17 March 2019

Closing Ceremony 21 March 2019

On 21 March the final curtain fell on Seven days of sporting achievement, dozens of events, countless displays of bravery, and millions of smiles. Officials and dignitaries from the UAE and Special Olympics, including His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Khalfan Mohammad Al Mazrouei, Managing Director of Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 and the President of Liberia, George Weah, led the celebrations.

Held at Zayed Sports City, the spectacular Closing Ceremony featured amazing performances by global superstars Keala Settle and Nicole Scherzinger. Athletes from the UAE and Sweden, alongside two Sargent Shriver Global Messengers, conducted the ceremonial handover of the Special Olympics Flag to Sweden who will host the Special Olympics World Winter Games in 2021. The Declaration of Closing saw the Flame of Hope, which had burned brightly in its cauldron at Zayed Sports City since the Opening Ceremony, officially passed on in a moving ritual. Donned with 369 Medals at the behest of Athletes with Intellectual disabilities, the SO Bharat Contingent arrived back in India on 23 March 2019 Highlights

Invitation by HE Navdeep Suri, Ambassador of the Republic of India to the UAE



The Indian contingent was invited by HE Navdeep Suri, Ambassador of the Republic of India to the UAE a day prior to the Opening Ceremony. A cultural evening was organized at the India Social & Cultural Centre Abu Dhabi. Mr Victor R Vaz , Head of the Delegation, was invited on stage to share participation of such a large contingent at the World Games. All the officials present wished their best to the Athletes and expressed their pride in having such an amazing representation from India. His Excellency demonstrated the highest levels of modesty as he meandered through the sprawling auditorium ensuring to cheer each and every Athlete personally.

Ms Sulekha Rana supported the Digital products & Technology Department as the Subject Matter Expert (SME). In her assigned role she provided technical support and process management to the Equestrian Department. She worked in collaboration with the Games Technology Operators to assist the games Technical Delegates (TD) and Competition Managers with divisioning, scheduling, results entry, and report generation throughout the course of the competition.



Unveiling the Sweden Games 2021 logo

The Special Olympics World Winter Games Sweden 2021 logo was unveiled on 20 March 2019. The logo denotes the idea of collaboration for better public health. The Swedish model intertwines the sports movement with local municipalities and governmental forces to create a happier and healthier life for all.

The mark also represents Sweden with its blue and yellow colors. The shapes symbolize the mountains and lakes of Åre and Östersund, where the Games will take place. It represents a happy feeling of doing a brave attempt, cultural meetings, and friendship across borders. Special Olympics Dance Sport

The Dance Sport Challenge was held on 19 and 20 March 2019 witnessing participation of dancers from 25 nations, including the UAE, taking part in a range of exhilarating dance competitions. Taking place at the Saadiyat Island campus of New York University, Abu Dhabi, the dancers competed in a variety of contemporary styles including jazz and hip-hop as well as traditional routines and ‘speciality’ dances. Six participants from India included Avila (Goa) , Dinal (Maharashtra), Lalita (Chattisgarh) Lokesh (Chattisgarh), Rohit (Maharashtra) and Jayanth (Karnataka) all winning medals in the demo sport challenge. Lokesh and Lalita did a duo category,

winning a Bronze Dinal won a Bronze . Avila took part in the hip hop category winning a Silver. Jayanth won a Silver and Rohit a Bronze The Dance Sport Challenge is classed as a demonstration sport, with participants performing in exciting team and duo competitions. Dancing contests made their debut at the 2015 World Games in Los Angeles. The ideal addition to the wide range of sporting and cultural events that are supported by Special Olympics, dance contests were also held in Graz, Austria, in 2017. Now in its third edition, the UAE capital hosted the biggest Dance Sport Challenge as part of the World Games Abu Dhabi 2019. During the competitions held at the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2019 Abu Dhabi , Special Olympics International and the World Dance Federation signed a Proclamation where WDF committed to extend full support in enhancing the development of Dance Sport .

MOU- Special Olympics and World Badminton Federation

Special Olympics and the Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced a long-term partnership and commitment to developing a cooperative plan to increase inclusion and accessibility for more athletes today. The new alliance will also create growth opportunities and enhance participation in badminton events throughout the world. The announcement comes during the Special Olympics World Games, where 150 badminton athletes from 58 countries are competing

UAE Pledges to Make Every School a Unified Champion School

UAE Pledges to Make Every School a Unified Champion School: The United Arab Emirates (UAE)

announced their pledge to implement the Unified Champion Schools (UCS) program across all public schools. This announcement was made between the UAE Ministry of Education, Special Olympics UAE, and Special Olympics, with partnership by the British Council. Special Olympics has created over 100,000 Unified schools around the world. Using sports as the catalyst for change, the UCS program helps to support Special Olympics’ mission of building a more inclusive world through education.

2019 on participation of Women

“Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 is leading by example when it comes to promoting female

inclusion. More than half of the LOC staff are women and key female figures are helping to drive the Special

Olympics movement towards its goals.

These World Games have welcomed a record-breaking number of female athletes. Almost 40 per cent of the

athletes who have competed in sporting competitions over the last few days are women, with over 2,800

females taking to the playing field. More than 400 of the female athletes showcasing their skills in the UAE

are from the Middle East and North Africa region.

These World Games are also playing host to the first-ever female Special Olympics Athletes from

Saudi Arabia, with 21 women proudly representing the KSA

“While the huge number of women who are taking part in the World Games is to be celebrated as a great achievement, it should not be regarded as a target that has been reached. Rather, it should be considered a stepping stone towards even greater female inclusion in the workplace, on the sports field, and throughout society.”

My brother won 1 Gold and 2 Bronze in Roller skating; Special Olympics has changed the thinking of lot of people. After Rishabh won medals and was honored, the people wanted to put their children in sports. I want every child should play and should be given a equal opportunity. I will train my brother to help others.

Sonu Kumar from Haryana who won a Gold in Judo. He studies as well as works in the Chetanalaya Special School Rohtak, Haryana. His brother is a driver with the school. He attributes his victory to a simple diet and regular practices under the supervision of his local Coach Sukhvir who is an international Judo fighter himself. The medal brings a streak of light and hope into the otherwise daily struggle to make ends meet

Having gone through rejection multiple times from schools, her participation in Football at the Games and winning Bronze, has finally made her happy with a sense of achievement. Jagadeswari lives with her family in a rented house at Kathirgamam village, Puducherry. Her father Arivazhagan earns a living by working as a security in a private company for a meagre amount while the mother remains a house wife. Jagadeeswari is today a Youth icon and gets invited to share her life in various forums, the latest being her presence as a Chief Guest for a sports day function at the Ameet University.



Media and Communications

ESPN's coverage began on 14 March with a three-hour special on ESPNEWS. Working with host broadcaster Abu Dhabi Media, ESPN3 featured multiple live feeds each day through the Games, delivering more than 175 hours of live coverage across venue competitions. ESPN made the event available in Latin America (in Spanish and Portuguese), Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia. Channels in India were SONY ESPN & SONY LIV (OTT)

Special Olympics athlete and Ambassador Daina Shilts was contributor to ESPN's coverage throughout the Games and during the Opening Ceremony. Each night's program featured a special "Around the Games with Daina Shilts" segment hosted by Shilts.

Words Work Communications New Delhi facilitated Media outreach and News coverage around the World Games focussing on India. Ms Zoya Khan , from the organization and Ms Aprajita Upadhyay from the Press Trust of India (PTI) travelled to Abu Dhabi for the same.

Along with substantial online and quite a few print and electronic coverage (Annexure A) there were stories of Athletes published by SOI and SOAP too

During the Cheers for Champions campaign, Special Olympics profiled selected athletes from around the globe, asking supporters to help amplify the Special Olympics athletes and create a massive global cheer for them.

He was covered through his preparedness and victory at the World Games as a crew travelled to New Delhi to film him in February 2019 to film him, continuing to capture stories around him at the World Games in Abu Dhabi UAE.
