After taking the neigh- boring country Nepal by storm, ‘Zindagi Rocks’, a rom-com adventure film is all set to woo the audi- ence of Sikkim, Darjeeling and kalimpong as it hits the theaters next month. Having already creat- ed a huge buzz amongst teenagers in Nepal, the film is a warm, tear-jerk- ing and humorous 2 hour journey into the lives of four friends who set out on an adventure trip and end up discovering the essence of love and friendship along the way. A tale of growing up, first romance and friend- ship, Zindagi Rocks is not only joyful but is also an upbeat comedy which is often funny to the bones. The film star’s the new Heartthrob of Kollywood, Sauramraj Tuladhar along with Akesha Bista and Re- echa Sharma (Loot fame) in lead roles. The movie also casts Sonam Pakhrin from Kal- impong, Prakriti Shrestha (Hostel Fame), Rajendra Khadgia and Keki Adhikari in prominent roles. The movie is directed by Nikesh Khadka and produced by Birendra K. Tuladhar under the ban- ner Vee productions. Lok Adalat settles 6 cases HM Report Gangtok,Apr11: National Lok Adalat relating to Labour and Family matters was held today throughout the country. Under the initiative, Sik- kim State Legal Services Au- thority constituted nine Lok Adalat Benches at District Court Level and Taluk (Sub- Division) levels out of which Labour and Family cases were taken up in Court of Judge Lok Adalat, East at Gangtok, Court of District & Sessions Judge, West at Gy- alshing and Court of District & Sessions Judge, North at Mangan. A total of 11 cases were received out of which 6 cases were successfully set- tled. A sum of Rs 3, 85,000, was also awarded by the Lok Adalat Benches. As per information Sikkim SLSA would be organizing National Lok Adalat on vari- ous subjects every month. Gorkha organisation to be set up in Siliguri Siliguri, Apr 11: A meeting was held this morning at Gorkha Kalyan Sangathan in Bikashnagar, Salugara be- tween the local Gorkha peo- ple and several noted Gorkha literateurs, authors, writers and activists. With the ob- jective of establishing cohe- siveness and solidarity amongst the Gorkha commu- nity residing in Siliguri, the meeting discussed over the pressing need of forming an organization that would help the local Gorkha populace scattered across Siliguri to build a strong cohesiveness amongst the community. Nar Bahadur Dahal, a not- ed local litterateur who also presided over the meeting and C.K.Shrestha, a local writer and the chief guest for today's meeting were greet- ed with colourful khada and tika. The welcome speech was given by Suren Pradhan, a social worker of the area. During his keynote ad- dress, chief guest CK Shrest- ha, said that it has become very essential for the Nepali people living in Siliguri to stay united and foster broth- erhood amongst themselves, to which he proposed for setting up of an organisation christened as the ‘Siliguri Gorkha Samaj’, an idea which was actually coined by Sudha Pashi, a local activist who wanted to call it ‘Gorkha Mancha’. “With the setting up of the Siliguri Gorkha Samaj, we Nepalis living in Siliguri can come to each other’s help, and stay united as well,” said Shrestha. His idea of changing the original name ‘Gorkha Man- cha’ into ‘Siliguri Gorkha Sa- maj’ was debated by 70-80% of the people present in the event. In response, Suren Pradhan, who has been elected the Convener for three months for the pro- posed organisation said, “Within this span of three months, the committee shall discuss on the resolutions and agendas required for set- ting up of the sangathan.” The name of the organisa- tion shall be finalised later. It is a secondary issue, and shall be given a collective thought afterwards,” he add- ed. The seminar was orga- nized to interrogate the idea of development and to find out a critical stance of its re- gional and sub-regional man- ifestations. Senior scholars of interna- tional repute like Prof. Virgin- ious Xaxa, Deputy Director, Tata Institute of Social Sci- ences, Gauhati and Prof. Sharit K Bhowmik, Tata In- stitute of Social Sciences, Mumbai and National Fellow, ICSSR, New Delhi graced the the two days conference on March 29-30. The conference was fund- ed by the ICSSR. The other dignitaries who presented speech in each academic session and chaired the technical ses- sions were Prof. Sibranjan Mishra, Visva Bharati, Prof. Abhijit Mitra, Burdwan Uni- versity, Dr. Dilip Sarkar, Prof. Sanchari Mukherjee and Dr. Swatahsiddha Sarkar, North Bengal University. The sem- inar witnessed twenty four research papers followed by discussion thereafter. In the inaugural speech of Dr. C. B. Rai, former princi- pal of St. Joseph’s College stressed on the contribution of Jesuits in the field of edu- cation in Darjeeling hills and the significance of the phi- losophy of Rev. Father Ar- rupe at the level of collegiate education. While introducing the conference theme convenor Dr. Anjan Chakrabarti, Head, Department of Economics held the view that strategies and policies for economic development often get con- tested and become conten- tious since most of our na- tional and regional econom- ic strategies focus on eco- nomic competitiveness that too in a knowledge driven global economy. Prof. Sharit Kumar Bhow- mik in his keynote address pointed out that not only the wage differential between organized and unorganized sector is on rise, but the phe- nomenon is also the same among the same class of la- bourers in different unorga- nized sectors. He also brought his research find- ings on the present and fu- ture of the tea-gardens and tea-gardens labourers of Dar- jeeling and Dooars region. Prof. Virginis Xaxa, Tata In- stitute of Social Science, Gauhati, in his special lecture raised the crucial question that the attempt to address inequity, inequality through so called development ulti- mately breeds further inequity,inequality. Dr. Swatahsiddha Sarkar while presenting his argu- ment strongly argued that though development and politics are inseparable is- sues, development over and over again makes its pres- ence in a depoliticised form. To him, identity aspirations and agenda for development often become mutually exclu- sive however the reality de- nies such corroboration. St. Joseph’s college has decided to bring out an edit- ed volume incorporating these presentations made during the conference days, which will not only help the researchers of this region but also prove to be an impor- tant policy document for var- ious policy makers and plan- ners working at both govern- ment and non-government agencies of this region and beyond. Khagragarh blast: NIA arrests a suspect in Malda Malda, Apr 11: A five mem- ber team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday night apprehend- ed one Bin Amin Seikh (32) from Ansaritola village under Baliadanga GP of Kaliachak area in Malda district near the Indo-Bangladesh border in connection with the October 2 2014 Khagragarh blast case. Amin was taken to Kolka- ta last night. The blast last year had occurred in a house in the Khagragarh locality of Burdwan, killing two sus- pected terrorists of Jamaat- ul-Mujahideen of Bang- ladesh on the spot and had left a third man severely in- jured. The police had seized 55 improvised explosive de- vices, RDX, wrist watch di- als and SIM cards from the spot on the day of explosion. Amin, arrested last night hails from Bhagabangola in Murshidabad district and had taken refuge at the house of one Mahbool Ra- haman at Ansaritola village to escape arrest, said police sources. The NIA officials on April 2 had nabbed one Mehboob Seikh on charges of provid- ing refuge to Amin who used to frequent his house in Kali- achak. On questioning, Me- hboob had mentioned Amin to be one of those involved in the Khagragarh blast case. The local police were in- formed by the NIA of Amin’s visit and had been instruct- ed to keep the suspect un- der constant vigil which fi- nally led to Amin’s arrest last night by the NIA team. (HS) GPU level training on organic farming Dalapchand, Apr 11: A Gram Pan- chayat Unit level training and inter- action pro- gramme on Sikkim Organic Mission was held at Dal- apchand Gram Prasashan Ken- dra, East Sikkim on Friday. The program was pre- sided over by the Panchayat Presi- dent, Dalapchand GPU in presence of H. K. Gautam, Joint Director, Nat- ural Resource Management/ Food Security and Agricul- ture Development Depart- ment, Nima Doma Bhutia, DDA, Tshering Chopel Bhu- tia, Mission Officer, Service provider ICCOA, Official of Agriculture and Horticulture Department, Panchayat Members and farmers of the GPU. While addressing the programme Joint Director H.K Gautam explained in de- tail about the aims and ob- jectives of the state govern- ment mission programme on Organic farming and certifi- cation. He also explained about the soil testing report, soil health card and plant health management. Tsher- ing Chopel Bhutia highlight- ed the benefit of organic ma- nure and organic pesticides, and its ultimate benefit to in- crease the productivity of land in sustainable manner. The Panchayat President in- formed about the present sta- tus of organic farming in the area and utilization of organ- ic manure. The demonstration on preparation and use of bio- agent/botanical extract in- cluding maintenance and ex- ercise on farm diary was also displayed by service provid- er ICCOA for the benefit of the farmers. An interactive session was arranged be- tween farmers and resource persons where the farmers showed keen interest and actively participated in the discussion. Man arrested with firearm Malda,Apr 11: English Bazar police of Malda district apprehend- ed a man with a handgun from the local railway hospital area late Friday night. The man has been identified as one Anis Khan (30), a resident of Sattari village under the EB police station. Dipak Karmakar, the EB police station officer-in-charge said, “Some police officials patrolling the railway hospital area spotted the man in suspicious condition and detained him. The incident occurred at around 8:30 am when the two bikers came in between the wheels of two ten-wheeled lor- ries. According to police, the lorries were over-carrying sand, due to which the drivers lost control resulting into the acci- dent. The injured duo has been admitted to Malda Medical College and Hospital in critical condition and is undergoing treatment. (HS) Beijing, Apr 11: A nun set herself on fire while crying out for the Dalai Lama to re- turn to Tibet in the latest in dozens of self-immolations in recent years by Tibetans protesting Beijing's controls over the region, overseas rights groups said. Yeshi Khando, 47, of Nga- ngang Nunnery circled Kardze Monastery in Si- chuan province and then self-immolated on Wednes- day near the police station while shouting slogans in- cluding "Tibet needs free- dom," London-based Free Tibet said in a statement Fri- day. She also called out "Let His Holiness Return to Ti- bet" as she was on fire, the group said, a reference to the Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader who has lived for de- cades in exile in India. The Washington, D.C.- based International Cam- paign for Tibet also reported the immolation, but used a slightly different spelling for the nun's name. The groups said security personnel and police used extinguishers to put out the flames and took Yeshi Khan- do away, and that local sourc- es believed she died. A woman reached at the Ganzi county government denied that any self-immola- tion happened on Wednes- day and hung up. Calls to the county police office rang unanswered. Yeshi Khando's nunnery could not be con- tacted. Tibetan monks and nuns are among the most active opponents of Chinese rule in the region and face some of the harshest restrictions on their activities. Earlier this week, Tibet's Communist Party chief Chen Quanguo has demanded that Buddhist monasteries display the na- tional flag as part of efforts to shore up Chinese patrio- tism. Dozens of Tibetan Bud- dhist monks and laypeople have set themselves on fire in protest of Beijing's strict controls over the region and their religion and to call for the return of the Dalai Lama, according to the overseas rights groups. The International Cam- paign for Tibet says 113 men and 24 women have self-im- molated since March 2011, the vast majority of whom have died.

Malda, Apr 11: English Bazar police of Malda district apprehend-ed a man with a handgun from the local railway hospital area lateFriday night. The man has been identified as one Anis Khan (30),a resident of Sattari village under the EB police station.

Duo injuredin road mishap

Malda, Apr 11: Two bikers were severely injured when theywere hit by two weight-laden lorries from behind, at theMathurapur area of Manikchowk under the Malda districttoday morning.

The incident occurred at around 8:30 am when the twobikers came in between the wheels of two ten-wheeled lor-ries. According to police, the lorries were over-carrying sand,due to which the drivers lost control resulting into the acci-dent. The injured duo has been admitted to Malda MedicalCollege and Hospital in critical condition and is undergoingtreatment. (HS)

Beijing, Apr 11: A nun setherself on fire while cryingout for the Dalai Lama to re-turn to Tibet in the latest indozens of self-immolationsin recent years by Tibetansprotesting Beijing's controlsover the region, overseasrights groups said.

Yeshi Khando, 47, of Nga-ngang Nunnery circledKardze Monastery in Si-chuan province and thenself-immolated on Wednes-day near the police station

while shouting slogans in-cluding "Tibet needs free-dom," London-based FreeTibet said in a statement Fri-day. She also called out "LetHis Holiness Return to Ti-bet" as she was on fire, thegroup said, a reference to theTibetan Buddhist spiritualleader who has lived for de-cades in exile in India.

The Washington, D.C.-based International Cam-paign for Tibet also reportedthe immolation, but used a

slightly different spelling forthe nun's name.

The groups said securitypersonnel and police usedextinguishers to put out theflames and took Yeshi Khan-do away, and that local sourc-es believed she died.

A woman reached at theGanzi county governmentdenied that any self-immola-tion happened on Wednes-day and hung up. Calls tothe county police office rangunanswered. Yeshi Khando's

nunnery could not be con-tacted.

Tibetan monks and nunsare among the most activeopponents of Chinese rule inthe region and face some ofthe harshest restrictions ontheir activities. Earlier thisweek, Tibet's CommunistParty chief Chen Quanguohas demanded that Buddhistmonasteries display the na-tional flag as part of effortsto shore up Chinese patrio-tism.

The International Cam-paign for Tibet says 113 menand 24 women have self-im-molated since March 2011,the vast majority of whomhave died.
