Anthropological  Survey  of  India,    Sub  Regional  centre,  Jagdalpur successfully organized a three days National Seminar on “Indian Villages: Passage of  Change”  from    4th  to  6th November  2015  at  Jagdalpur,  under  the  12th  plan project on “Bio‐ Cultural, Environment and Sustainable Development”.  

 The seminar was inaugurated on 4th Nov. 2015 at 10.30.a.m.  The inaugural 

session  was  chaired  by  Dr.  C.R.  Sathyanarayanan,  Deputy  Director, Anthropological  Survey  of  India  and Head  of  office,  Southern  Regional  Centre, Mysore, on the behalf of the Director Anthropological Survey of India.  The Dr. K. M Sinha Roy, H.O.   Sub  regional centre,  Jagdalpur   gave heartfelt  thanks  to  the participants who had arrived  from various  regions of  the country and   also said that  this seminar was so significant  in  the sense  that  the present studies which are being conducted by Anthropological Survey of  India  in different village  from different  regions  of  our  country  are  trying  to  understand  our  country’s  village socio‐economic,  religious and political  life  to assess  the present  scenario of  the our village population  in a  systematic Anthropological    scientific manner. Dr. K. Mukhopadhyay, Co‐ordinator of the programme  introduced the   purpose of this seminar  to the house and pointed out how the seminar is going to identify issues that  are  crucial  for  rural  people  of  the  country  and  why  publication  of    the findings  can  be  useful  for  the  academics,  policy  makers  and  the  people themselves.  Chief  Guest  of  this  seminar   Mr.  Amit  Kataria,  IAS,  Collector  and District Magistrate, Bastar district  inaugurated  the  seminar  and  highlighted  the necessity  of  such  studies  that  anthropological  survey  has  undertaken  from  the viewpoint of administrator, while speaking to the  participants and delegates from different regional centres of An.SI.  

 Special  Guest  Prof.  Rajat  k.  Das,  Emeritus  Prof.  Vidyasagar  University 

explained  how  the  study  of  villages  can  enrich  our  knowledge  base  further. Professor N.D.R. Chandra, Vice –Chancellor, Bastar University during his key note address mentioned the tradition of such studies and noted the issues that can be considered while  conducting  village  studies.  Dr.  Satyanarayanan  in  his  address

pointed  out  some more  issues  that  are  important  for  studying  rural  India  and spoke of the future direction of the project.  

Besides  this,  some of Respected Tribal  leaders namely, Shri Lingo Poyam, Ganga Ram Kashyap, Dr. Kiran Niruti, Smt. Santi Salam, Sh. Dev Nath Usendi, and faculty  members  and  students  and  research  scholar  from  the  Department  of Anthropology,  Bastar  University  and  Danteshwari  collage  participated  in  the Seminar. 

 Altogether 30 research papers  from different Regional and Sub – Regional 

Centre   of the Country were deliberated during the 3 day seminar, among them 24 research papers on village studies, one on ethnography of the Shompen and 5 were on Border studies and followed by two Special lectures on the main theme of the seminar by Prof. Rajat. K. Das on 05th Nov., 2015 and Prof. R. K. Mutatkar on 06th Nov., 2015 respectively. The experts and other participants offered critical comments and suggestions for further improvement of the presentations so that those could be published. 

 At the end of the seminar discussion was held on future shape and course of the project  with  concluding  remarks  and  recommendations  from  the  resources persons given  to  the participant.   The  seminar coordinators  recommended  that the qualitative  information to be collected would  include division of villagers on the basis of caste, class, gender  relations  in home and outside, access  to public places  for  all  sections  of  villagers,  participation  in  development  activities  by villagers  specifying  in  what  capacity  they  can  do  so,  perception  of  different sections  of  villagers  on  development  initiatives,  on micro‐  area  development, sustainable  development  and  people’s  participation.  It  has  also  recommended that each principal Investigator will write a paper on a specific theme which also will be accommodated in the same volume.
