Youth farmers group of Gulibi from Minjeygeog under LhuntseDzongkhag visited the

Agriculture Research and Development Centre Wengkhar and Sub-centreat Lingmethang from

10th

and 11th

May 2017. The group which consists of 23 members was lead by the MinjeyGeog

Agriculture Extension official with an objective to get an exposure on the farming technologies

at Centre.

On 10th

May the youth group visited Sub-centreLingmethang. Upon arrival the participants were

served tea with biscuits. They were then brief about the centre and the activities in the field. The

group was then lead to the field to see various activities in the field. They had visited the dragon

fruit, avocado, mango, litchi, pomelo, banana, papaya, watermelon, vegetable production blocks

and maize seed production block. The groups were then taken to the nursery block were they

were explained on fruit crop nursery production techniques and vegetable nursery growing

techniques like poly bag fillings, grafting on avocado fruit plants and vegetable transplanting.

After the lunch the group was taken to the Mountain Hazelnut Venture. They were taken in the

hazelnut nursery production and visited the medium preparation, cooling chamber, medium

sterilization block and nursery raising techniques.

After the visit at the Mountain Hazelnut Venture Gulibi Youth Farmers group was then taken to

the Regional Pig and Poultry Breeding Centre. From there the group then departed to Agriculture

Research and Development Centre, Wengkhar.

On 11th

the youth group visited at ARDC Wengkhar.

At Wengkharthey were presented on centre

information, technologies available at centre for

commercialization of agriculture and how centre

helps youth and other clients to come up with

farming by Mr. SangayJamtsho (Res. Com. Sector).

CARLEP, PD high-lighted the important roles of

youth as farmers and shared heart-felt appreciation

for them for being Educated Youth Farmers.

To believe in farming and to show available resources and inputs at centre for farming, youths

were guided towards field starting from the visit of seed bank. They were shown how to preserve

seeds and store seeds. They are also explored to the seed display room to show them availability

of seeds on different varieties of different crops.

Then they were taken to kiwi block, citrus, Persimmon and pear blocks. During the visit, they

were educated on orchard management practices and high-lighted on importance of pruning,

training, fruit thinning, irrigation, fertilization and manure.

Mr. TsheringPenjor, Agriculture Principal Officer, who developed smart irrigation and Electric

Fencing emphasized to make use of such improved technologies and he stated that such

technologies has now made farming much easier to farmers. Working mechanism of automated

smart irrigation was also demonstrated for them keeping in view of water scarcity and

importance of water for plants as well as for whole world.

To start with farming, youth group has started with upland paddy, soya-bean and vegetables. So, they

were taken to visit vegetable blocks. Mr. Karma Tenzin and M/s. KelzangLhadon, in briefexplained them

regarding vegetable cultivation and vegetable seed production.

Last session of their visit was; practical on citrus grafting. Mr. UgyenSonam Sr. Agri-Supervisor. First

explained them on different methods of plant propagations, he also shared some knowledge regarding

important benefits of plant propagations. Then he demonstrated on citrus grafting and citrus budding

for the visitors, The Youth Group.

All the youth were strongly motivated for farming and they said they will do their best to work as

farmers. The whole program was successful with fund support from CARLEP-IFAD.
