Judging Coordinator and Lead Organizer: Amelia Greig The Australian National University
Executive Summary The AIAA Region VII-AU Conference was held at the University of New South Wales from November 27-29, 2013. The conference was timed such that exams would be completed at all Australian universities from which participants were likely to be drawn. The event was able to draw in a large participation due to the base of students at UNSW and the University of Sydney, and we had a relatively full 2 days with 33 competition presentations and 4 non-competition presentations made. Additional registered attendees brought the numbers up to 57 students over the two days, albeit with 4 of these via skype. The newly-established UNSW AIAA Student Branch was tasked with coming up with a modest “social program” that involved a welcome drinks reception at the nearby Doncaster Hotel at which 20 or students networked. The event dinner was held at the Bronte Lifesaving Club at Bronte Beach, which most students attended – it was combined with the Sydney Section Christmas Party and a keynote speaker, Darryl Stokes from Australian Aerospace, talked about the C130J project, followed by a keen Q&A session. Prizes were awarded to Andrew Gong from the University of Sydney (1st place, and a trip to the AIAA SciTech 2014 meeting in Maryland), Michael Evans from the University of Adelaide (2nd), and John Powell from Monash University (3rd). The conference budget indicated a surplus of $1.15 after all expenses were finalized, such that the event largely broke even thanks to sponsorship of catering from the UNSW School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, and the Australian Centre for Space Engineering Research – while expensive, the venue for the evening event was spectacular and much-appreciated by the attendees, and feedback from the students and organizers for the whole event was extremely positive.

About the Conference The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) sponsors student conferences in each AIAA Region to provide students in aerospace related fields with a professional conference experience in which to present research, exchange knowledge, and discuss opportunities in the field of aerospace engineering. The conference also provides students with the opportunity to obtain feedback on their work, writing and presentations from professionals outside their direct academic environment, thus aiding in the growth and development of their research and communication skills. The Region VII-AU (Australasia Asia) conference has been maturing in recent years to become an established part of the undergraduate experience of top aerospace students across Australia in particular. The 2013 conference was held at UNSW Australia in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, capping a year in which the UNSW Student Branch was launched with great success. This year’s conference consisted of the competition for undergraduates as in previous years, but taking advantage of the concentration of aerospace students at UNSW and the University of Sydney, attendance and the number of submissions were both up on previous instalments. The participants submitted written papers that were reviewed and judged, and each of the participants was then judged on their oral presentation before a panel of aerospace professionals organized by Amelia Greig. The authors received feedback on their work and their ability to communicate that work. In addition, prizes were awarded. The AIAA Foundation provided the following monetary prizes for awards: First place: US $500 and a trip to the AIAA SciTech Meeting in National Harbor, Maryland Second Place: $300 Third Place: $250 The conference consisted of several events, which included an informal reception at the Doncaster Hotel, and technical sessions following a daily keynote speaker – on the first day, a late cancellation by initial speaker David Wilson from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau led conference chair Dr. Graham Doig to step in and talk about his career path and the importance of being open to chance and networking; following this, UNSW PhD student Kyll Schomberg talked about his research and his decision to pursue postdoctoral study. On the second day, the keynote was a fascinating lecture delivered by A/Prof. Andrew Neely of UNSW Canberra, on the subject of hypersonics research in Australia, which provoked much discussion amongst the students. The conference dinner was held at the Bronte Lifesaving Club at Bronte Beach, which most students attended – it was combined with the Sydney Section Christmas Party and a keynote speaker, Darryl Stokes from Australian Aerospace, talked about the C130J project, followed by a keen Q&A session including careers advice for those wishing to break into the small and competitive grad position market in Australia. Following the awards presentation at the end of day 2, many attendees gathered for more informal drinks and networking and discussions about the 2014 SPC being held at the University of Sydney were briefly held amongst the organizers. Overall the event was a resounding success. The international skype presentations worked well. We had approximately 10 additional persons at the conference other than students – organizers, judges, student chaperones, etc. – the numbers proved manageable with parallel sessions required approximately half the time, although in retrospect this diluted the cohesiveness of the group a little as some did not see, for instance, any of the prizewinning presentations.

Forewords:
Welcome to our 2013 American Institute of Astronautics and Aeronautics Region VII Student Conference – Australia’s chance to showcase the great work being done by our undergraduate researchers, and for the students, a fantastic way to network and make new friends, learn about exciting work, hear from some local experts in aeronautics and space, and maybe even win a trip to the 2014 AIAA SciTech meeting in the US.
All of us on the organising team hope you have a great time at UNSW and in Sydney if you're able to attend. The standard of papers this year has been exceptionally high, and we’ve also had a fantastic increase in the number of presentations and attendees on previous years showing increasing interest in this great event. A lot of people put a lot of work into putting this event together, and the biggest thanks of all has to go to Amelia Greig – without her efforts over many months, the conference would’ve been a big disorganised mess if it even happened at all. Kyll Schomberg has been excellent at making sure we’re all fed and watered and bound to have a good time, and David Wilson has been busy balancing the books and taking care of lots of things behind the scenes. Matt Cruickshank and Alex Ngo and the UNSW Student Branch have been great at taking care of lots of things big and small. Various academics have been brilliant at helping us get the word out all over the country and abroad, and thanks so much to our keynote speakers and judges and reviewers who really maximise the professionalism of the event and the value to everyone that attends. Finally a big thanks is also due to Michael West, gently pulling the strings here and there to make it all happen. So enjoy the conference, make the most of every opportunity, and let’s continue to celebrate Australia’s place as a nexus of innovation and ideas in aerospace, able to punch way above our weight.

2013 Event Sponsors:
Welcome to the 2013 AIAA Region VII Student Conference - the 10th edition since the conference was first held in Australia in 2004. The AIAA Sydney Section is delighted to partner with the UNSW AIAA Student Branch and UNSW to host this great event. From humble beginnings - back in 2004 there were just 10
presenters - this conference has grown every year and the 2013 edition will be the largest so far with over 35 papers being delivered. The next few days are a fantastic opportunity to present your work in a formal technical meeting atmosphere, develop your presentation skills and exchange ideas with other students from around the region. I have been impressed by the quality of the papers that I have reviewed and I am looking forward to listening to the presentations. Best of luck to all the presenters and, irrespective of the results, I know you will all develop skills and contacts that you can use now and into your future careers. For those who have recently completed their undergraduate studies, I want to strongly encourage you to continue your involvement with the AIAA as a young professional member. The AIAA recognises the importance of developing the aerospace profession's next generation. Whatever your interests within aeronautics and astronautics and wherever in the world your career will take you, the AIAA provides many unique opportunities that will enrich your career and help you achieve your goals. On behalf of the AIAA Sydney Section, I would like to thank all those who have worked hard over the past year to make this event a success - your efforts have been tremendous! Thank you to the AIAA Foundation and AIAA Headquarters for funding the conference and prizes. Without their vision and desire to invest in future aerospace professionals, this event would not be possible. We also appreciate the support of the Australian Centre for Space Engineering Research and the UNSW School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. I hope you enjoy the conference!
