Trustees of the Library The Library is a public self-governing charitable trust. Registered Charity No. CHY 5879.

Established under the terms of the will of Sir Alfred Chester Beatty, which was granted probatein 1969, the collection is vested in the Trustees who own and operate the Library.

The Board of Trustees consists of a maximum of twelve members, one each of whom isappointed by the President and Taoiseach and three by the Minister for Arts, Heritage & theGaeltacht. The Director of the National Library serves as a Trustee ex officio. All other Trusteesare co-opted. The Trustees elect the Chair.

Since 1997 the Trustees of the Library are appointed or co-opted to serve five-year termsand may serve a maximum of two consecutive five year terms.

Trustees do not receive any remuneration, aside from modest receipted expenses incurred, whilecarrying out their duties. All expenses are paid in accordance with the guidelines and rules set downby the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform.

Director’s Report

Once again, 2013 proved to be an eventful and busy year for the Chester Beatty Library; a yearin which we made considerable progress by developing a shared vision, and agreeing a set ofhigh level objectives to guide our way over the next three years. Following a number of facilitateddiscussions with all staff, the Library developed a Statement of Strategy 2013-2015. This year’sAnnual Report, therefore, identifies key projects and achievements of 2013 according to thestrategic priorities.

Hand-in-hand with the new Statement of Strategy, the Library submitted its application forthe Heritage Council’s Museums Standards Programme for Ireland (MSPI). This was a significantundertaking, and a very useful exercise, as the policies and supporting documentation dovetailwith the three-year strategic objectives and actions.

In the first six months of the year Ireland hosted the EU Presidency and Dublin Castle wasthe primary venue for meetings and events. The Presidency impacted on the Library’s operationsin both positive and challenging ways. Amongst the many visitors who found time betweenmeetings to visit the collections, we were delighted to welcome Herman Van Rompuy, Presidentof the European Council, in February. The intermittent closures of the Palace Street Gate, however,impacted on access and therefore on visitor numbers to the Library, Silk Road Café and GiftShop. Despite this, the final count for the year of just over 250,000 visitors was on target.

It is only right to note that the Library still faces significant challenges as it continues tobe subject to the recruitment moratorium and a year-on-year reduction in the grant-in-aid.Despite these hurdles, we continue to find ways to create an inviting and dynamic experiencefor those who come through our doors; and we continue to embrace collaborations which enableus to open up our world class collections to an ever growing audience.

Prior to 1997, under the terms of Chester Beatty’s Will, there was no term limit for theTrustees; it is testament to their commitment and support of the Library that this year saw theretirement of Mrs Joan Duff from the Board of Trustees after 30 years. During that time, MrsDuff also served as Acting Director from 1990 to 1992.

Finally, it is with sadness that we note the passing of Seán Freyne, Professor of Theology(until 1997) and Head of School of Hebrew, Biblical and Theological Studies at Trinity College(1980 to 2002). Professor Freyne had served as a Trustee of the Library for over 27 years, sincehis appointment in 1986 by An Taoiseach Garret Fitzgerald.

STRATEGIC PRIORITY 1: To safeguard, manage and develop the Collection

COLLECTION MATTERS

Policy

Significant progress was made in the revision and formulation of collection policies. TheCollections Policy was completed in August and formally approved by the Trustees inSeptember. All policies across the Library were also updated at this time and include:Acquisitions, Disposal, Exhibition, Loan, Documentation, Learning and Collections Care. Thesewill be reviewed on an annual basis by the Collections Management Team.

Condition survey of the Collections

The Assessment and Treatment database was launched in January; this was an exciting new phaseof development for the Library’s collections management database AdLib. All activities andtreatments carried out by conservation staff are now directly linked to the object records on AdLib.

Over 380 plates of Biblical papyrus were condition surveyed, re-labelled and cleaned inpreparation for digitisation. At the same time, new protective interleaving was cut for the glassplates and drop-back boxes provided which greatly improved the housing of this Collection. Fullcondition surveys were carried out on the Mongolian, Tibetan and Thai manuscripts, with oversix hundred objects examined.

Preservation of the Collections

The Conservation department continues to be involved in every aspect of collection care at theLibrary, with activities focused on the preparation of objects for loan and the rotation of thepermanent and temporary galleries. A total of 450 items from across the collections wereconserved, including 126 prints which were mounted and framed for the Costumes Parisiensexhibition. Conservation work also continued on the Persian and Indian miniature and theWestern print Collections.

Conservation staff completed a project to deep clean the Collection Storage Areas with theassistance of Curatorial staff. A programme to measure all unboxed material held in storagebegan and the in-house production of phase boxes continued. Replacement of unsuitable housingmaterial in storage focused on the papyrus and Indian Collections this year.

New illustrated guidelines were drafted by conservation staff on how to handle Islamic andAsian bindings and scrolls. A full revision of handling guidelines and staff training will becarried out next year.

Conservation support staff

The conservation internship programme continued, thanks to the generous support of theHeritage Council and the Library’s Contributing Members. Julia Poirier’s one-year internshipfinished in December and Josefin Bergmark-Jimenez joined the Library in November. JoanBarnewell continued to volunteer in conservation and assisted with the programme to measurethe Arabic collection for phase boxes. Eileen Walsh continued work on the conservation of theWestern print collection. Contract conservators Elisabeth Randell and Peggy Reme joined theconservation team on short contracts over the summer and their help was invaluable.

Emergency Response Plan (ERP)

As part of the Library’s sustained focus on the Emergency Response Training, Ms Jessica Baldwin,the Library’s Head of Conservation, organised two training workshops on Emergency Responseand Salvage Techniques sponsored by the Council of National Cultural Institutions (CNCI). Thesewere held at the Library on 2 October and 22 November and over 90 participants attended fromInstitutions across the country.

Heritage Council’s Museums Standards Programme for Ireland (MSPI)

The Head of Conservation’s main focus in 2013 was the coordination of the Library’s applicationto the Museum Standards Programme for Ireland (MSPI). The application form required Librarystaff to answer detailed questions and supply supporting documentation covering the followingareas: Constitution and Policies, Museum Management, Caring for the Collection, Documentingthe Collection, Education and Visitor Care and Access. The final application form was submittedin September and external assessors met key management staff for a site visit in November. Thishas been a huge undertaking for the staff at the Library and the process was greatly assisted bythe Trustees Working Group.

SPECIAL PROJECTS IN CONSERVATION

In addition to conservation work carried out in-house in the Library’s Conservation Laboratory,it was decided to outsource a number of projects to specialist independent conservators whocarry out their work in the Library under the supervision of Jessica Baldwin, Head ofConservation. In this way, the Library could continue to progress work on the permanentCollection in spite of the recent depletion in conservation staff due to the ongoing moratoriumin public sector recruitment.

Conservation of three Japanese scrolls sponsored by the Sumitomo Foundation,Tokyo

Thanks to a generous grant from The Sumitomo Foundation, the three-year project to conserveThe tale of Oeyama (Oeyama emaki) (CBL J 1145), an important mid seventeenth-century set ofthree Japanese scrolls, continued at the Restorient studio in Leiden. In August, conservationintern Julia Poirier travelled to Leiden and spent a fascinating week learning Japanese scrollconservation techniques from Andrew and Sydney Thompson.

Pigment analysis of the Ruzbihan Qur’an

The Library successfully applied to European-funded MObile LABoratory (MOLAB) accessprogramme within CHARISMA (Cultural Heritage Advanced Research Infrastructures: Synergyfor a Multidisciplinary Approach to Conservation). The programme sponsored a team of fourscientists from the University of Perugia, Italy to travel to the Library in October. The teamworked closely with conservation and curatorial staff and carried out non-invasive pigmentanalysis on the beautiful sixteenth century Persian Ruzbihan Qur’an (CBL Is 1558). A secondteam will visit the Library in the beginning of 2014 to complete the project. The data collectedwill form an integral part of a publication and in-focus exhibition on the Qur’an currently atthe planning stages.

Independent paintings conservator, Ciara Brennan, consolidated flaking and cracked pigmenton a Chinese statue of Shintao - Taoist God of Luck (CBL C 1081).

Conservation of Chinese dragon robes and Tibetan thankas

Independent textiles conservator, Karen Horton conserved a badly damaged nineteenth-centuryyellow Imperial dragon robe (CBL C 1051). This project was part-funded by generous donationsfrom the Library’s Members. Karen also started a full condition survey of the Library’s collectionof 26 textile mounted Tibetan thangkas and assisted the conservation team with developing anew mounting technique using magnets for Tibetan thangkas on display in the SacredTraditions Gallery.

PAPERS OR TALKS PRESENTED BY CBL STAFF

Jessica Baldwin, Head of Conservation, gave two talks and tours on Conservation at the ChesterBeatty Library to members of the NIROI Museum Professional Network on 12 October.

Justyna Chmielewska, Volunteer Co-Ordinator, attended the three-day Intercultural Cities:Making Diversity work for Cities conference from 6–8 February in Irish Museum of Modern Art,where she contributed as a speaker on the topic of intercultural learning in the cultural andheritage sector, together with Jenny Siung, Head of Education. As part of the conference someparticipants visited the Chester Beatty Library where they learned more about interculturaldialogue and learning in the Library.

Ms Chmielewska also gave a talk on ‘Issues that arise in everyday work and the volunteeringorganisation’ during a one-day Volunteer Programme seminar organised on Saturday, 8 June bythe Irish Museum Association. The seminar took place in the National Gallery of Ireland.

Fionnuala Croke presented a public talk, ‘Chester Beatty: the ones that got away’ on 14 March,in association with the temporary exhibition, ‘Chester Beatty: the Paintings’.

Ms Croke presented a paper at The Second Irish Conference on the History of Mathematics atSt Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, on 17 May entitled ‘Arabic Mathematics. Manuscripts fromthe Chester Beatty Library’

As part of the programme of the Samuel Beckett International Summer School at Trinity College,Ms Croke delivered a public talk, ‘Samuel Beckett. A Passion for Paintings’ at the National Galleryof Ireland on 15 August.

Ms Croke, together with Professor Susan Schreibman, Trinity College, Dublin, presented a publictalk at the Library, “Letters from Nice. Chester Beatty’s friendship with Thomas MacGreevy”, on21 November.

Textile conservator Karen Horton presented a public lecture at the Library entitled Lifting theveil: mounting Tibetan thangkas on the 23 August and repeated the lecture at the IMA Textilesconference held at the NMI on the 18 October.

Laura Muldowney, East Asian Researcher, presented Chester Beatty’s Chinese Paintings, as part ofthe Dublin City Council Chinese New Year Festival in February, and gave an Arts of the Bookgallery tour to the volunteers in November.

Julia Poirier, Conservation Intern, presented a public lecture at the Library entitled Conservingthe Past: Training for the Future on 22 August as part of Heritage week.

Intercultural Cities, a workshop based on the Chester Beatty Library Intercultural LearningProgramme was delivered by Jenny Siung and Justyna Chmielewska, at Dublin InterculturalCities: a milestone event, at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham on 7 February, in association withthe Council of Europe.

Jenny Siung presented a paper entitled Understanding Islam in Irish Education: Chester BeattyLibrary, at the Intercultural Learning Programme, Mary Immaculate College Limerick, on 19March.

Ms Siung presented a report on Understanding Islam in Irish Education at the Anna LindhFoundation Mediterranean Forum, Marseille, France, on 5 April.

Ms Siung made a presentation on the Chester Beatty Library Intercultural Learning Programmefor the Ministries of Culture of 27 Member States of the EU on 4 July 2013 at the Open Methodof Coordination meeting, Brussels.

She also made a presentation on the ASEMUS Museum Education Exchange Programme at theASEMUS AGM on 31 October, at the Chester Beatty Library, and gave an update and presentationon Developing an Education Programme at the Heritage Council/Irish Walled Towns NetworkCreating a Pop-Up Exhibition or Temporary Museum seminar, on 4 December, in Kilkenny.

Dr Elaine Wright, Curator of the Islamic Collections, and Elizabeth Omidvaran, Assistant to theArabic Manuscripts Project, attended the Ninth Annual Conference of The Islamic ManuscriptsAssociation (TIMA), on the topic Manuscripts of the Mamluk Sultanate and Its Contemporaries,held at the University of Cambridge (2-4 September), where they made a poster presentation(designed by Ms Omidvaran) on the Library’s Islamic Seals Database. There was a great deal ofinterest in, and enthusiasm for, the database on the part of the conference participants.

Frances Narkiewicz and Sinead Ward co-authored Societal Exchange and Knowledge Transfer:Perspectives from a Cultural Heritage Institution, EdTech 2013, University College Cork, Ireland,on 31 May.

Frances Narkiewicz presented a showcase ‘Digital Cultural Heritage at The Chester BeattyLibrary’, at the EU Presidency conference ‘Access, Use, Re-use – Unlocking the potential ofonline cultural content’, in Dublin Castle on 17 June.

The Look of the Book: Manuscript Production in Shiraz, 1303-1452, by Dr Elaine Wright, Curatorof the Islamic Collections, was published by the Freer Gallery of Art, in association with theLibrary and the University of Washington Press. Thirty-seven of the reproductions included init are of Chester Beatty manuscripts.

Dr Wright published the article ‘How Was It Cut? An Initial Exploration of the Technique ofFiligree Production’ (based on research conducted on the Library’s manuscripts) as part of theproceedings of the International Art of Bookbinding Meeting of the Traditional Arts Association,which took place in Istanbul in 2013.

Julia Poirier wrote a conference review on the ICOM-CC Graphic Document Working GroupInterim Meeting held at the Austrian National Library, Vienna (17-19 April), which was publishedin the July ICON Newsletter.

EXHIBITIONS

Chester Beatty: The Paintings:7 September 2012-31 August 2013

The closing date of this exhibition, comprising just over 30 paintings that once belonged toChester Beatty, was extended to the end of August 2013. The paintings are among some ninetyworks presented by Beatty to the Irish nation in 1950, shortly after his move to Ireland fromLondon. Beatty concentrated on purchases of Barbizon School painters (like Corot, Jacque andMillet) and their Realist contemporaries (such as Breton). Unsurprisingly, he was also attractedto the work of Orientalist painters such as Gérôme, Fromentin and Berchère. The exhibitionpresented the paintings in the context of Beatty’s private picture gallery at his London home,Baroda House.

The Chester Beatty Library is grateful to the National Gallery of Ireland for their generosityin lending these paintings. The exhibition was curated by Fionnuala Croke, Director, who alsowrote the accompanying catalogue, Chester Beatty: The Paintings (price €6.99).

Costumes Parisiens: fashion plates from 1912-1914

This temporary exhibition (11 October 2013 – 30 March 2014), featured over 100 fashion platesfrom the French fashion magazine, the Journal des Dames et des Modes. The Library is particularlythankful to the National Museums Northern Ireland, Ulster Museum, Belfast, for the loan offour contemporary costumes that greatly enhanced the exhibition. Not only did the exhibitionhighlight lesser known areas of the Chester Beatty Collections but was the first time that theLibrary collaborated with the Ulster Museum.

The exhibition was partially funded by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the GaeltachtCo-operation with Northern Ireland funding scheme and travelled on loan to the Ulster Museumin the summer of 2014, opening in their Print Gallery. This coincided with the opening of TakingLiberties in their Fashion Gallery (adjacent to the Print Gallery), which featured a selection ofcostumes and accessories from the early twentieth century.

Over 20 objects from the Western Collections were rotated in the Arts of the Book permanentgallery to compliment the temporary exhibition, Costumes Parisiens, with a brief overview ofthe history of the fashion and costume plate.

A programme of related public talks took place including guest lectures by Sara Donaldson,art and fashion historian, on The Couturier, Paul Poiret; Lorna Weightman, fashion commentatorand presenter, on Life in the ‘Fash-Lane’ (5 December); and Sinead McCoole, Irish author andhistorian, on No Lipstick or High Heels? Style, Fashion & Politics for Women in the RevolutionaryMovement 1900-1923 (12 December).

DIGITAL ACCESS TO THE COLLECTIONS

Treasures of the Chester Beatty Library App

The Library launched its first downloadable App for the iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad. This Appcontains videos filled with high-resolution images and audio commentary highlighting 20 of theLibrary’s most important works, alongside videos about Sir Alfred Chester Beatty and a historyof his personal collection. It is free to download from the iTunes store.

Digitisation of the Biblical Papyrus with CSNTM

Public access to the Library’s early Christian manuscripts has been guaranteed through apartnership with the Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts (CSNTM). From 18July-9 August 2013, a team from the CSNTM spent four weeks in the Library, working closelywith Library staff. Led by Dan Wallace, Executive Director, the six-member team digitised themajority of the Chester Beatty Library biblical papyri collection, in addition to a small numberof medieval manuscripts.

The CSNTM team brought their camera equipment, accessories and computer equipmentas well as their considerable experience of digitising this type of material. The CBL provided anappropriate working space and a team of professional staff – which comprised Conservators,Collections and Rights & Reproductions staff – to work closely with them by preparing, supplyingand handling the agreed order of manuscripts. Conservation staff assessed, labelled and cleanedover 380 plates of papyrus in preparation for the project. At the same time, new protectiveinterleaving was cut for the glass plates and drop-back boxes were ordered to greatly improvehousing of the papyrus collections.

This digitisation project created over 5,000 high resolution digital images which are nowavailable to researchers, the public and interested parties throughout the world, via the CSNTMwebsite [http://www.csntm.org/], or onsite at the CBL. The team also provided the CBL withdetailed catalogue information on all the manuscripts digitised.

Münster University Collaboration

The Chester Beatty Library and Institute for New Testament Research (Institut fürNeutestamentliche Textforschung, INTF) in Münster University have for many years beenworking to add CBL New Testament manuscripts to the Institute’s Virtual Manuscript ReadingRoom (NTVMR) [http://ntvmr.uni-muenster.de]. A recent redesign of the website has allowedthe Library to add all of BP I, II, and III to this site, along with a small number of images fromother manuscripts. The images are zoomable but protected from download.

Online Exhibitions

The Library increased content on the CBL Image Gallery with the publication of two onlineexhibitions.

Costumes Parisiens, fashion plates from 1912-1914

[http://www.cbl.ie/cbl_image_gallery/exhibition/overview.aspx?exhibitionId=17 ]Coinciding with the temporary exhibition, Costumes Parisiens, fashion plates from 1912-1914, anonline exhibition of the same title was published to provide a brief introduction to the threemain themes of the exhibition: fashion, fashion illustration and the printing techniquesemployed to create the fashion plates.

Witness to the Word: Chester Beatty New Testament Papyri

Islamic Seals Database

The Library’s Islamic Seals Database [http://www.cbl.ie/islamicseals/]now includes 550 sealsfrom the Library’s manuscripts plus just under 30 seals from the Walters Gallery in Baltimore(the full complement of seals in the Walters manuscripts). Arrangements have also been finalisedwith the Staatsbibliothek, Berlin, to include seals from their manuscripts.

Explore Islamic Art

The Library is now part of Explore Islamic Art Collections [http://www.museumnf.org], aninternational museum platform for Islamic art. Part of the much larger Museums With NoFrontiers project, the Explore Islamic Art Collections project includes a constantly growingwebsite with information on and images from some 50 collections of Islamic art in more than20 countries. The Library has made a larger contribution of photographs than most otherinstitutions included on the site, having contributed 188 photographs of 50 manuscripts andpaintings in the Islamic Collections.

Enhancements to CBL website

With the support of Fáilte Ireland, an external digital/social media consultant completed areview of the Library’s website and recommended some short-term enhancements for visitoraccessibility. These were implemented in 2013 and included Facebook, Tripadvisor and Twitterlogos being added to every page of the site, enhanced video and image content, and multilingualleaflets available to download in nine languages.

READING ROOM

The reading room continued to accommodate international students and scholars, who visitedthe Library throughout the year for the purpose of conducting research on the Collections,tutorial groups, and conference delegates. This included some 20 international students andscholars who visited the Library during the year for the purpose of conducting research on theIslamic Collections. 29

As always, there was also a steady and constant stream of queries from students and scholarsfrom around the world who were unable to visit in person, requesting information on materialin the Collections.

EDUCATION AND LEARNING

Learning Policy

The CBL Learning Policy was completed in August and formally approved by the Trustees inSeptember.

National Festivals

Participation of the library in relevant national festivals for 2013 includes the Dublin ChineseNew Year festival and Experience Japan festival.

The Library has partnered with Dublin Chinese New Year Festival since 2008 and contributesto the programme with a number of events including workshops for children and adults as wellas talks based on Chinese art history as reflected in the Collections.

Experience Japan Festival held a number of its events in the Library which included taikodrumming and Japanese language exchange as well as Japanese printmaking for adults withHiroko Imada.

Child Protection Policy

The Library is represented on the Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht’s Children FirstOversight Committee. The first Committee meeting took place in November 2013. The Head ofEducation attended and reported the Library’s policy, training and practice regarding childprotection. An interim policy and guidelines will be circulated by the Department of Arts,Heritage and the Gaeltacht in 2014.

Membership Programme

The Library’s Membership programme is fully subscribed. Throughout the year Members enjoyeda busy calendar of events including talks, themed food events, film screenings and Book Clubmeetings, each linked to aspects of the Library’s permanent collection and to temporaryexhibitions. Members also made overseas trips to visit museums and cultural institutions inLisbon and in Paris.

A number of Members made donations in 2013 to help conserve a nineteenth-centuryChinese Imperial dragon robe which will go on public display in spring 2014. The Library isvery grateful for this support for its conservation programme.

Giftshop

A considerable amount of merchandise including magnets, notebooks, mirrors, purses,bookmarks, cards and prints was produced to accompany the exhibition Costumes Parisiens.

Events

The Library hosted 41 event bookings in 2013. Events included the two-day ASEMUS dayconference which the Library hosted from 31 October – 1 November; Turkish Embassy Writer’s& Music Evening (24 January); St Patrick’s Festival (16 March); Experience Japan Festival (20April); Turkish Embassy Traditional Music (10 June); Fashion Road Show (13-14 September);and the Festival of Carols and Readings (5 December).

APPOINTMENTS

Dr Jill Unkel was appointed to the position of Curator of the Western Collections in November2013. Dr Unkel has been with the Library since 2005 as a Curatorial Assistant for both theIslamic and Western Collections. She has curated two exhibitions at the Library: the highlysuccessful The Art Books of Henri Matisse (2011) and Costumes Parisiens (October 2013-March2014) which attracted over 72,000 visitors. Dr Unkel holds an MSc in Art Education from LongIsland University, and a PhD in Art and Architectural History from Trinity College Dublin

Ms Anne Dillon joined the Library as Finance Manager on 1 October. She is a qualifiedaccountant, having previously worked with both Fáilte Ireland and Dublin Tourism.

STAFF TRAINING

Hyder Abbas attended an LAI Cataloguing and Indexing Group workshop entitled ‘Introductionto RDA’, held at Trinity College Dublin on 25 May.

Mr Abbas also attended ‘History of Libraries from the Middle Ages to the Present’, at the LondonRare Books School, University of London, from 1-5 July.

Justyna Chmielewska, Volunteer Coordinator, attended a three-day PhotoVoice Training Coursefrom 25–27 February in St James’s Hospital, and the Lighting a Fire seminar on 19 April in TheNational Gallery of Ireland.

In 2013 the Library was a key partner in a European network of museums and culturalorganisations; The Learning Museum network’s primary focus is on lifelong learning with a seriesof conferences during the project. Ms Chmielewska attended two conferences which took place inthe University Museum, in Manchester on 22–24 May and Bologna, Italy from 18-21 September.

Ms Chmielewska job-shadowed two ‘Live & Learn’ Project Officers on 6 and 7 November, toobserve how the National Museum of Northern Ireland works with older adults.

Laura Muldowney, East Asian Researcher, attended the ASEMUS conference held at the CBLfrom 31 October-1 November.

In December, Dr Elaine Wright, Curator of the Islamic Collections, participated in a workshopat the Freer and Sackler Galleries in Washington, DC, on the topic of print versus digital collectioncatalogues. While in Washington, she spent two days at the Sackler Gallery, researching Persianbookbinding.

Rie Mishima, Shop Manager, and Marie Fitzgerald, Shop Assistant, attended a workshop by TheAssociation for Cultural Enterprises (ACE) entitled ‘Retail Best Practice’, held at the NationalGallery of Ireland on 17 June.

Conservation staff attended a one-day workshop on Caring for Collections provided by the HeritageCouncil and held at Drogheda Museum on 5 December.

Frances Narkiewicz attended ‘Archives Portal Europe: Building Infrastructures for Archives in aDigital World’, Trinity College, Dublin, 26-28 June.

Derval O’Carroll, Head of Operations & Administration attended the Open Method of Coordination(OMC) meeting on Cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue in Brussels, 18-19 March.

Ms O’Carroll and Mary Dowling (Membership Officer) were invited to Turkey in May on astudy trip. Their visit was fully funded by Asia Minor Tours (an Irish based tour operatorselling Turkey as a destination) and Turkish Airlines. During their four-day stay, they were

given the opportunity to promote the Library and research was also carried out in anticipationof a possible Members’ trip to Istanbul in 2014.

Ms O’Carroll also attended the WXN (Womens’ Executive Network) Leadership Summit held inthe Four Season’s Hotel, Ballsbridge on 13 June.

Ms O’Carroll attended a one day workshop ‘Strategic Marketing Planning’ held by the ArtsMarketing Association in London on 11 December.

VOLUNTEERS AND VOLUNTEER TRAINING

The Volunteer Programme continues to play an important role within the Library. At the endof 2013, there were 30 Volunteers, acting as Tour Guides, Graphic Designers, Visitor ServiceRepresentatives, Education, Conservation, Membership and Retail Assistants.

The Education Department received a grant of €2000 from Dublin City Council which wasused to create a mentoring programme for the Library’s Community Ambassadors from theEast Asian, Middle Eastern and European communities.

Volunteers attended focused training sessions, organised by the Volunteer Co-ordinator.Themes covered included:

ANNUAL CHESTER BEATTY LECTURE

Dr Frances Wood, Curator of the Chinese Collections in the British Library, delivered the CBLAnnual Lecture ‘The Silk Road: Dunhuang to Dublin’ on 5 February. Attended by approximately180 guests, it was held in City Hall (the Dublin Castle conference centre is unavailable for theduration the EU Presidency). Dr Wood’s excellent talk was very warmly received, and several ofthose who attended have since contacted us to compliment both the speaker and the Library onthe event.

INTERCULTURAL LEARNING

The education and learning programmes for diverse communities is specifically designed withcommunity members as a means to engage with local diverse communities throughout thepublic/learning programme. This is achieved through partnerships with embassies and festivalse.g. Dublin Chinese New Year Festival, Diwali, Thai Cultural Day and Experience Japan Festival.

The Library participated in a number of festivals in 2013 including: Dublin Chinese NewYear Festival, Experience Japan Festival, Bealtaine Festival, Thai Cultural Day, Culture Night,Diwali and Festival of Carols and Readings for Christmas. It partnered with the Turkish Embassyand received support for the Silk Worm Summer Club. Children worked with Turkish electronicengineer Emre Uzun and made robots. The French Embassy provided support to invite twoFrench guest speakers for Costumes Parisiens.

Cross Border Project

The Library partnered with the Inclusion and Diversity Services Northern Ireland in a two-yearproject and co-produced a learning resource for newcomers in secondary schools in Northernand the Republic of Ireland. This was launched in May 2013. The resources are available on aproject specific website www.waysofseeing.eu.

Collaborations with the Anna Lindh Foundation

In March, in collaboration with members of the Irish Anna Lindh Network, the Library’s EducationDepartment led a one-day learning seminar ‘Understanding Islam in Irish Education’ in MaryImmaculate College, Limerick. Members of the teaching community, trainee teachers, andmembers of the Islamic communities attended. Dr Susan Douglass of the Prince Alwaleed BinTalal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, Georgetown University (Washington DC) gavethe keynote speech. The seminar was funded by the Anna Lindh Foundation. (Understanding Islamin Irish Education is available in a Prezzi format and You Tube on www.cbl.ie under Education.)

On 3 May CBL hosted the Anna Lindh World Press Media Day. Members of the ALF (fromEgypt and Morocco) attended this one-day seminar. During the day, findings of the aforementionedseminar in Limerick were reported to members including both Irish and International media,delegates from the Department of Foreign Affairs and the European Commission.

Chinese New Year

The CBL is a key partner of Dublin Chinese New Year Festival. The Library ran a number ofevents to mark the Year of the Snake including the Silk Worm Club for 6-11 year olds, two daysof art demonstrations with a Dutch-Chinese artist, a series of talks exploring Chinese art andculture as well as our Community Ambassador Tours in Mandarin.

INTERNATIONAL MEETINGS

Middle East Libraries Committee (MELCOM)

On 26 June 2013, MELCOM UK (Middle East Libraries Committee) held their annual meeting atthe Library. The programme of lectures included a lecture by Dr Elaine Wright, entitledIntroducing the Islamic Collections of the Chester Beatty Library, and the attendees were given atour of the galleries and a private view of manuscripts from the Islamic Collection.

Asia-Europe Museum Network

From 30 October -1 November the Library hosted the Executive Committee Meeting of the Asia-Europe Museum Network and the 6th Trustees Board Meeting of the Virtual Collection of AsianMasterpieces. Fifteen attendees from Asian and European Museums met in the ReferenceLibrary over two days. At the ASEMUS Executive meeting, the Director of the CBL, Ms FionnualaCroke, was appointed Chair elect. She will take over from Kim Youngna, Director-General,National Museum of Korea, Seoul, for a three-year term at the 2014 General Conference. Anupdate on the ASEMUS Museum Education Exchange programme was presented by the Library’sHead of Education, Ms Jenny Siung, to the EXCO members. The Library is coordinating thisexchange with the Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore.

Council of Europe Intercultural Cities Conference, 6-8 February 2013

In 2008 the Council of Europe and the European Commission developed an initiative to helpintegrate diverse and migrant communities in cities across Europe. The Dublin conference wasorganised by the Council of Europe and Dublin City Council from 6-8 February, to take stock ofwhat cities have achieved, what works and what challenges remain. The Library was invited toshowcase how arts and culture can engage with multi-ethnic communities through ourprogrammes and exhibitions. A site visit for delegates was arranged on the closing day. Strategic Priority 8:To develop a systematic approach to marketing the Library

Visitor Feedback

A new Visitor Survey was introduced in 2013 and carried out on a daily basis via randomsampling of visitors. In addition, the collection of basic statistics on visitor origin was introducedand information was collected at the front desk, via our tour guides and from visitors to ourgiftshop.

An evaluation of the complete year’s survey revealed a high level of satisfaction amongstour visitors with 86% rating their experience at the Library as ‘Excellent’ and the remainderrating it as ‘Good’. 53% of visitors come from overseas - 47% are Irish (with highest numberfrom Dublin (74%) - and of the overseas markets, USA visitors made up the highest proportion(37%), followed by visitors from Britain (19%) and then mainland Europe. The largest segmentwere in the 46-64 age bracket, followed by the 33-45 age bracket, 55% rated their status as‘Employed’, followed by ‘Retired’ (21%) and 41% were repeat visitors.

Further feedback on the Library and our exhibitions is also collected and analysed via avariety of additional sources, including TripAdvisor and other tourism review websites, Facebook,Twitter, Google Analytics and our in-house visitor comment book. An analysis of this data alsoreveals a high level of satisfaction, particularly in relation to our exhibitions, with visitorsfinding them informative, thought-provoking, visually attractive and well-laid out. The highquality of our displays is regularly commented on with little or no negative comment.

The Library received both a ‘Certificate of Excellence’ and a Travellers’ Choice Award fromTripAdvisor in 2013, having been voted as one of the top 10 landmarks in Ireland. It joined onlythree other Dublin ‘landmarks’ - Trinity College, Glasnevin Cemetery and Kilmainham Gaol.Lonely Planet also listed the Library in second place in its list of ‘Top 20 free things to do inDublin’ in 2013.

Online advertising & Social Media

Particular emphasis this year was placed on the use of Facebook and Twitter as marketing tools,in addition to targeted advertising online, utilising sites such as RTE, The Irish Times and theBBC.

Liaison with tourism partners

In association with Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland, the Library welcomed 28 Tour Operatorsfrom Europe, North America and New Zealand to the Library in April and we were included asthe first stop on a familiarisation trip for journalists from India, Italy, Norway & Belgium onCulture Night.

InternshipsEce Tunca, a Masters student at Koç University in Istanbul, worked as an intern with Dr ElaineWright, Curator of the Islamic Collections, for four weeks during the summer.

Conor McGee finished his internship with the Library at the end of June 2013 and TerriO’Brien commenced her internship with the JobBridge National Internship Scheme in August2013 for a nine month period.

Iontaobhaithe na Leabharlainne Is iontaobhas carthanúil poiblí féinrialaithe í an Leabharlann. Carthanas Cláraithe Uimh: CHY 5879.

Cuireadh an bailiúchán ar bun de réir uacht an Sir Alfred Chester Beatty, ar deonaíodh probháidina leith sa bhliain 1969. Tá sé dílsithe sna hIontaobhaithe ar leo an Leabharlann agus achoinníonn ar siúl í.

Tá Bord na nIontaobhaithe comhdhéanta de ar a mhéad dhá chomhalta dhéag; ceapann antUachtarán agus an Taoiseach duine amháin an duine agus ceapann an tAire Ealaíon, Oidhreachtaagus Gaeltachta triúr acu. Feidhmíonn Stiúrthóir na Leabharlainne Náisiúnta mar Iontaobhaí exofficio. Comhthoghtar gach Iontaobhaí eile.

Ó 1997 i leith ceaptar Iontaobhaithe na Leabharlainne nó comhthoghtar iad chun fónamh a

dhéanamh ar feadh téarma cúig bliana agus féadann siad dul i mbun fónaimh ar feadh dhá

théarma cúig bliana as a chéile ar a mhéad.

Ní fhaigheann na hIontaobhaithe luach a saothair seachas costais admhálaithe measartha beaga atabhaíonn siad le linn dóibh a gcuid dualgas a chomhlíonadh. Tuarascáil an Stiúrthóra

Uair amháin eile chruthaigh an bhliain 2013 ina bliain ghnóthach agus lán d’imeachtaí i LeabharlannChester Beatty; ba bhliain í a ndearnadh dul chun cinn suntasach trí fhís chomhroinnte a chur araghaidh agus inar aontaíodh ar shraith d’aidhmeanna ardleibhéil a bheadh ina dtreoir dúinn as seogo ceann trí bliana. Chuathas i mbun plé éascaithe leis an bhfoireann uile roinnt uaire agus inandiaidh sin chuir an Leabharlann Ráiteas Straitéise 2013-2015 i dtoll a chéile.

Ainmnítear dá bhrí sin i dTuarascáil Bhliantúil na bliana seo príomhthionscadail na bliana 2013agus na rudaí ba thábhachtaí ar baineadh amach iad sa bhliain sin de réir na bpríomhaidhmeannastraitéiseacha.

In éindí leis an Ráiteas Straitéise nua chuir an Leabharlann iarratas isteach le haghaidh anChláir um Chaighdeáin do Mhúsaeim na hÉireann (CCMÉ) de chuid na Comhairle Oidhreachta. Baghnóthas suntasach é sin agus beart thar bheith fóinteach lena chois, de bhrí gur maith atá napolasaithe agus an doiciméadú tacaíochta a ghabhann leo fite ina chéile leis na haidhmeanna agusleis na gníomhaíochtaí straitéiseacha trí bliana.

Sa chéad sé mhí den bhliain bhí Éire ina hóstach d’Uachtaránacht an AE agus ba é CaisleánBhaile Átha Cliath an t-ionad príomha maidir le cruinnithe agus agus le himeachtaí. Bhí tioncharag an Uachtaránacht ar oibríochtaí na Leabharlainne ar bhealaí dearfacha agus dúshlánacha. Ar nacuairteoirí iomadúla a raibh am saor a ndóthain acu le linn dóibh freastal a dhéanamh ar nacruinnithe chun cuairt a thabhairt ar na bailiúcháin bhí Herman Van Rompuy, Uachtarán naComhairle Eorpaí agus ba chúis sásaimh dúinn fáilte a chur roimhe i mí Feabhra. Dúnadh GeataShráid an Pháláis o am go chéile áfach agus cuireadh bac dá réir ar theacht agus ar imeacht na ndaoineagus bhí dhrochthionchar aige sin maidir leis an líon cuairteoirí chuig an Leabharlann, chuig ChaiféSilk Road agus chuig an Siopa Bronntanais. In ainneoin sin tháinig ríomh deiridh na gcuairteoirí irith na bliana, beagán le cois 250,000, leis an líon a raibh sé d’aidhm againn a tharraingt.

Is ceart dúinn a thabhairt dár n-aire go bhfuil an Leabharlann fós ag tabhairt aghaidh ar dhúshláinshuntasacha de réir mar a leanann sí de bheith faoi réir an mhoratóra ar earcú san earnáil poiblí agusan laghdaithe ar an ndeontas-i-gcabhair bliain i ndiaidh bliana. In ainneoin na mbacanna sin bímidi gcónaí ag lorg bealaí chun eachtra mealltach agus dinimiciúil a chruthú dóibh siúd a thagann trí nadoirse isteach agus glacaimid go fonnmhar le comhoibriú le dreamanna eile a chumasóidh dúinnna bailiúcháin den scoth atá againn a léiriú do lucht féachana a bhfuil a líon níos mó ná riamh.

Roimh 1997 ní raibh téarma ann maidir le hIontaobhaithe faoi théarmaí uacht Chester Beatty; isdearbhú ar a dtiomantas agus ar an gcaoi a dtacaíonn siad leis an Leabharlann gur i mbliana a d’éirighJoan Duff as a post tar éis di bheith ag feidhmiú ar Bhord na nIontaobhaithe ar feadh 30 bliain. Lelinn an achair sin sin d’fhóin Joan Duff freisin mar Stiúrthóir Gníomhach ó 1990 go dtí 1992.

Ar deireadh is le brón a thugaimid dár n-aire go bhfuil Seán Freyne, Ollamh le Diagacht (go dtí1997) agus Ceann Scoil an Léinn Eabhrais, Bhíobla agus Diagachta i gColáiste na Tríonóide (1980 go2002), imithe ón saol.

D’fheidhmigh an tOllamh Freyne mar Iontaobhaí ar an Leabharlann le breis agus 27 mbliana,ón lá a cheap an Taoiseach Garret Fitzgerald é in 1986.

Polasaí

Tá dul chun cinn suntasach déanta maidir le polasaithe bailiúcháin a athbhreithniú agus afhoirmiú. Cuireadh an Polasaí Bailiúcháin i gcrích i mí Lúnasa agus cheadaigh na hIontaobhaithego foirmeálta é i mí Mheán Fómhair. Tugadh na polasaithe uile ar fud an Leabharlann chun dáta agan am sin; orthu siúd bhí: Éadálacha, Diúscairt, Taispeántais, Iasachtaí, Doiciméadú, Foghlaim agusCúram na mBailiúchán. Déanfaidh Foireann Bhainistithe na mBailiúchán athbhreithniú orthu sinar bhonn bliantúil.

Suirbhé ar Riocht na mBailiúchán

Seoladh an bunachar sonraí maidir le Measúnú agus Cóireáil i mí Eanáir; ba chéim nua spreagúil ésin den fhorbairt a bhain le hAdLib, bunachar sonraí bainistithe bhailiúcháin na Leabharlainne. Tánasc díreach anois idir gníomhaíochtaí agus cóireálacha uile na foirne caomhantais agus taifid nan-oibiachta ar AdLib.

Rinneadh suirbhé ar riocht níos mó ná 380 pláta paipíre Bíobalta; rinneadh iad a ath-lipéadúagus a ghlanadh lena bhfáil faoi réir le haghaidh digitithe. Ag an am céanna gearradhidirleathanaigh chosanta nua do na plátaí gloine agus cuireadh boscaí titim-siar ar fáil freisin, rudaía chuir feabhas mór ar fheireadh cumhdaigh an Bhailiúcháin sin. Rinneadh suirbhéanna ar riochtna lámhscríbhinní Mongólacha, Tibéideacha agus Téalannacha; scrúdaíodh níos mó ná sé chéadearra.

Caomhnúcháin na mBailiúchán

Bíonn an Roinn Caomhantais páirteach ar bhonn leanúnach i ngach gné de chúram namBailiúchán ag an Leabharlann agus bíonn gníomhaíochtaí dírithe ar ullmhúchán na nithe lehaghaidh iasachta agus ar uainíocht na ndánlanna buana agus sealadacha. Caomhnaíodh 450iarsma ó ar fud na mbailiúchán lena n-áirítear 126 phrionta a gléasadh agus a cuireadh i bhfrámaíle haghaidh an taispeántais Costumes Parisiens. Chuathas ar aghaidh leis an obair chaomhantais arbhailiúchán na mionphictiúr Peirseach agus Indiach agus ar bhailiúchán phriontaí an Iarthair.

Chríochnaigh an fhoireann chaomhantais tionscadal chun domhainghlanadh a dhéanamh arLimistéir Stórála na mBailiúchán le cúnamh ón Bhfoireann Coimeádta. Tá tús curtha le clár chunan t-ábhar uile i stóráil nach bhfuil curtha i mboscaí a thomhas agus leanadh den obair boscaítimfhillteacha a tháirgeadh. Maidir le hathsholáthar ábhar cumhdaigh mhí-oiriúnach i stóráildíríodh i mbliana ar na Bailiúcháin phaipíre agus Indiacha.

Dhréachtaigh an fhoireann chaomhantais treoirlínte nua lán de léaráidí faoi conas ceangailleabhair agus scrollaí Ioslamacha agus Áiseacha a láimhseáil. Déanfar athbhreithniú iomlán ar natreoirlínte láimhseála agus beidh oiliúint na foirne i gcrích an bhliain seo chugainn.

Foireann tacaithe maidir le caomhantas

Leanadh leis an gclár intéirneachta um chaomhantas a bhuíochas leis an tacaíocht fhial a fuarthasón gComhairle Oidhreachta agus ó Chomhaltaí Ranníoca na Leabharlainne. Bhí deireadh lehIntéirneacht bliana Julia Poirier i mí na Nollag agus thosaigh Josefin Bergmark-Jimenez leis anan Leabharlann i mí na Samhna. Bhí Joan Barnewell ag déanamh obair chaomhantais goleanúnach ar bhonn deonach agus chabhraigh sí leis an gclár an bailiúchán Arabach a thomhas lehaghaidh boscaí timfhillteacha. Chuaigh Eileen Walsh ar aghaidh leis an obair chaomhantais arbhailiúchán phriontaí an Iarthair. Thosaigh na coimeádaithe Elisabeth Randell agus Peggy Reme abhí ar conradh ag obair i bpáirt leis an bhfoireann caomhantais ar chonarthaí gearrthéarmacha irith an tsamhraidh agus b’fhiú go mór an cion oibre a rinneadar.

Mar chuid d’fhócas marthanach na Leabharlainne ar Oiliúint Freagartha Éigeandála d’eagraighJessica Baldwin, Ceann Caomhantais na Leabharlainne dhá cheardlann oiliúna faoi FhreagraÉigeandála agus Teicnící Tarrthála arna n-urrú ag Comhairle na bhForas Cultúir Náisiúnta (CNCI).Bhí na ceardlanna ar siúl ag an Leabharlann an 2 Deireadh Fómhair agus an 22 Samhain agustháinig níos mó ná 90 duine ó Institiúidí ar fud na tíre le bheith rannpháirteach iontu.

Clár na Comhairle Oidhreachta um Chaighdeáin do Mhúsaeim na hÉireann (CCMÉ)

Dhírigh an Ceann Caomhantais go príomha in 2013 ar chomhordú iarratais na Leabharlainne chuigan gClár um Chaighdeáin do Mhúsaeim na hÉireann (CCMÉ). Éilíodh ar an bhfoirm iarratais arfhoireann na leabharlainne ceisteanna mionsonraithe a fhreagairt agus doiciméadú tacaithe athabhairt ar aird a chlúdódh na réimsí a leanas: Bunreacht agus Polasaithe, Bainistiú Iarsmalainne,Cúram a thabhairt don Bhailiúchán, an Bailiúchán a Dhoiciméadú, Oideachas agus CúramCuairteora agus Rochtain. Cuireadh an fhoirm iarratais deiridh isteach i mí Mheán Fómhair aguscasadh measúnóirí seachtracha agus daoine mórthábhachtacha ar an bhfoireann bainistithe lenachéile d’fhonn cuairt a thabhairt ar an láithreán i mí na Samhna. Ba ghnóthas ollmhór é sind’fhoireann na Leabharlainne agus thug Grúpa Oibre na nIontaobhaithe cúnamh mór donphróiseas.

Rinneadh freastal ar bhonn leanúnach sa seomra léitheoireachta do mhic léinn agus do scoláiríidirnáisiúnta a thug cuairt ar an Leabharlann i rith na bliana chun taighde a dhéanamh ar naBailiúcháin, do ghrúpaí teagaisc, agus do thoscairí comhdhála. Orthu siúd bhí 20 mac léinn agusscoláirí idirnáisiúnta a thug cuairt ar an Leabharlann i rith na bliana chun taighde a dhéanamh arna Bailiúcháin Ioslamacha.

Mar ab amhlaidh riamh tháinig ceisteanna isteach gan staonadh freisin ó mhic léinn agus óscoláirí ó ar fud an domhain nach raibh in ann cuairt a thabhairt go pearsanta agus a bhí agiarraidh faisnéise faoi ábhar sna Bailiúcháin.

Polasaí Foghlama

Cuireadh Dréachtú Pholasaí Foghlama LCB i gcrích i mí Lúnasa agus cheadaigh na hIontaobhaithego foirmeálta é i mí Mheán Fómhair.

Féilte Náisiúnta

Bhí an leabharlann rannpháirteach i bhféilte náisiúnta lena mbaineann in 2013 agus orthu siúd bhíféile na hAthbhliana Síní i mBaile Átha Cliath agus an fhéile, Experience Japan.

Bhí an Leabharlann agus féile na hAthbhliana Síní i mBaile Átha Cliath ag obair i gcomharlena chéile ó 2008 i leith agus déanann an Leabharlann cion oibre i dtaca leis an gclár trí roinntimeachtaí a chur ar siúl lena n-áirítear ceardlanna do pháistí agus do dhaoine fásta móidechainteanna atá bunaithe ar stair ealaíne na Síne mar a léirítear í sna Bailiúcháin.

Chuir an Fhéile Experience Japan roinnt dá cuid imeachtaí ar siúl sa Leabharlann lena n-áirítear drumadóireacht taiko agus malartú teanga na Seapáinise chomh maith le rangannamonaraithe priontaí Seapáine do dhaoine fásta le Hiroko Imada.

Polasaí um Chosaint Leanaí

Tá ionadaíocht ag an Leabharlann ar Choiste Maoirsithe Tús Áite do Leanaí de chuid na RoinneEalaíon, Oidhreachta agus Gaeltachta. Bhí cruinniú an chéad Choiste ar siúl i mí na Samhna 2013.Bhí an Ceann Oideachais i láthair agus thuairiscigh sé polasaí, oiliúint agus cleachtas naLeabharlainne maidir le cosaint leanaí. Cuirfidh an Roinn Ealaíon, Oidhreachta agus Gaeltachtapolasaí agus treoirlínte eatramhacha gcúrsaíocht in 2014.

Clár do Chomhaltaí

Tá an Clár do Chomhaltaí na Leabharlainne suibscríofa ina iomláine. Ar feadh na bliana bhain naComhaltaí taitneamh as féilire gnóthach d’imeachtaí ara n-áirítear cainteanna, imeachtaí a raibhbia de théama acu, scannáin agus cruinnithe Club Leabhar, gach aon cheann acu nasctha le gnéithede bhailiúchán buan na Leabharlainne agus do thaispeántais shealadacha. Rinneadh na Comhaltaíturais thar lear freisin chun cuairt a thabhairt ar iarsmalanna agus ar institiúidí cultúrtha iLiospóin agus i bPáras.

Rinne roinnt Comhaltaí síntiúis airgid in 2013 chun róba dragain Impiriúil Síneach ón naoúhaois déag a chuirfear ar taispeáint phoiblí in earrach na bliana 2014 a chaomhnú. Tá anLeabharlann thar bheith buíoch as an tacaíocht sin dá chlár caomhantais.

Siopa Bronntanais

Táirgeadh roinnt mhaith marsantacht lena n-áirítear maighnéid, leabhair nótaí, scátháin, sparáin,leabharmharcanna, cártaí agus priontaí chun gabháil leis an taispeántas Costumes Parisiens.

Ceapadh an Dr Jill Unkel mar Choimeádaí ar Bhailiúcháin an Iarthair i mí na Samhna 2013. Bhí anDr Unkel a bhfuil na Bailiúcháin Ioslamacha agus Bailiúcháin an Iarthair faoina chúram agfeidhmiú mar Chúntóir Coimeádta leis an Leabharlann ó 2005 i leith. Bhí sí ina coimeádaí do dháthaispeántas sa Leabharlann: Leabhair Ealaíne Henri Matisse (2011) agus Costumes Parisiens(Deireadh Fómhair 2013-Márta 2014), ar éirigh go han-maith leo agus a raibh tarraingt orthu agbreis agus 72,000 cuairteoir. Tá MSc in Oideachas Ealaíne ag an Dr Unkel ó Ollscoil Long Island,agus PhD i Stair Ealaíne agus Ailtireachta ó Choláiste na Tríonóide, Baile Átha Cliath.

Tháinig Anne Dillon chuig an Leabharlann mar Bhainisteoir Airgeadais an 1 DeireadhFómhair. Tá sí ina cuntasóir cáilithe; bhí sí ag obair roimhe sin le Fáilte Éireann agus leTurasóireacht Bhaile Átha Cliath.

Ón 30 Deireadh Fómhair -1 Samhain bhí an Leabharlann ina hóstach do Chruinniú ChoisteFeidhmiúcháin Líonra Iarsmalainne den Áise agus den Eoraip agus don 6ú Cruinniú de BhordIontaobhaithe Bhailiúchán Fíorúil na Shárshaothar Áiseach. Casadh cúig dhuine déag den luchtfreastail ó Iarsmalanna Áiseacha agus Eorpacha lena chéile sa Leabharlann Tagartha ar feadhtréimhse dhá lá. Ag cruinniú Feidhmeannais ASEMUS ceapadh Stiúrthóir an LCB, Fionnuala Croke,ina Cathaoirleach toghaí. Tiocfaidh sí i gcomharba ar Kim Youngna, Ard-Stiúrthóir, Ard-Mhúsaemna Cóiré, Seoul, ar feadh téarma trí bliana ag Comhdháil Ghinearálta na bliana 2014. Tugadh Suirbhé Cuairteoira nua isteach in 2013 agus rinneadh ar bhonn laethúil é trí shampláilrandamach a dhéanamh ar chuairteoirí. Chomh maith leis sin tosaíodh ag bailiú sonraí uimhriúlamaidir le bunús na gcuairteoirí agus bailíodh an fhaisnéis sin ag an deasc tosaigh de bhíthin nadtreoraithe turais agus ag an siopa bronntanais ó chuairteoirí.

Léirigh measúnú ar shuirbhé na bliana iomláine go raibh an leibhéal sásaimh i measc nagcuairteoirí ard; thug 86% díobh rátáil shásaimh ‘Ar fheabhas’ ar an taitneamh a bhain siad ascuairt ar an Leabharlann agus thug an chuid eile díobh an rátáil ‘Go maith’. Tagann 53% de nacuairteoirí ó thar lear – is as Éirinn a thagann 47% acu (an líon is mó ó Bhaile Átha Cliath (74%) -agus maidir leis na margaí thar lear tagann an chuid is mó de na cuairteoirí ó Stáit AontaitheMheiriceá (37%) agus ansin in ord laghdaitheach 19% ón mBreatain agus níos lú fós ó mhór-roinnna hEorpa. Bhí an chuid is mó acu san aoisghrúpa 46-64 bliana d’aois. Tháinig an t-aoisghrúpa 33-45 bliana d’aois sna sála orthu sin. Thug 55% an stádas ‘Fostaithe’ orthu féin; an dream ba ghairedóibh thug an stádas ‘Scortha’ orthu féin (21%) agus ba dhaoine ar athchuairt 41% acu.

Trustees' responsibilities statementThe Trustees are responsible for preparing the financial statements in accordance with the accountingpolicies. In preparing those financial statements, the Trustees are required to:

INDEPENDENT AUDITORS' REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF CHESTER BEATTYLIBRARY TRUST

We have audited the non-statutory financial statements of the Chester Beatty Library Trust for theyear ended 31 December 2013 which comprise the Statement of Financial Activities, the DevelopmentFund, the Balance Sheet, the Cash Flow Statement and the related notes. The financial reportingframework that has been applied in their preparation is applicable Irish law and accounting standardsissued by the Financial Reporting Council and promulgated by the Institute of Chartered Accountantsin Ireland (Generally Accepted Accounting Practice in Ireland), except as noted in the accountingpolicies note on page 9 of the financial statements.

Respective responsibilities of the Trustees and auditorsAs explained more fully in the Trustees’ Responsibilities Statement set out on page 3, the Trustees areresponsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the Accounting Policiesset out on pages 9 and 10. Our responsibility is to audit and express an opinion on the financialstatements in accordance with applicable Irish Law and International Standards on Auditing (UK andIreland). Those standards require us to comply with the Auditing Practices Board’s Ethical Standardsfor Auditors.

This report, including the opinion, has been prepared for and only for the Library’s Trustees as a bodyand for no other purpose. We do not, in giving this opinion, accept or assume responsibility for anyother purpose or to any other person to whom this report is shown or into whose hands it may comesave where expressly agreed by our prior consent in writing.

Scope of the audit of the financial statementsAn audit involves obtaining evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statementssufficient to give reasonable assurance that the financial statements are free from materialmisstatement, whether caused by fraud or error. This includes an assessment of: whether theaccounting policies are appropriate to the Chester Beatty Library’s circumstances and have beenconsistently applied and adequately disclosed; the reasonableness of significant accounting estimatesmade by management; and the overall presentation of the financial statements.

Opinion on non-statutory financial statementsIn our opinion the non-statutory financial statements:

have been properly prepared, in all material respects, in accordance with the Accounting Policiesin note 1 to the financial statements and present the state of the Library’s affairs at 31 December2013, and of its deficit and cash flows for the year then ended in accordance therewith;

1 Accounting policies

The significant accounting policies adopted by the Library are as follows:

a Basis of accountingThe accounting policies used and disclosures made in the financial statements comply with therequirements of Generally Accepted Accounting Practice in Ireland and are prepared under thehistorical cost convention in accordance with the recommendations of Accounting and Reporting byCharities: Statement of Recommended Practice 1 (SORP 1), except as set out below in respect ofHeritage Assets and Pension Accounting.

The benefits of the Library's long leasehold arrangements in its premises at the Clock Tower Building,within Dublin Castle, are not reflected in these Financial Statements.

The staff of the Library participate in the statutory Public Service Pension Scheme. The pensionspayable under this scheme have been and continue to be payable by the Library and the cost of thesepensions form part of the ongoing Library payroll funding, through the annual Grant-in-Aid receivablefrom the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. Generally Accepted Accounting Practice inIreland would require that the net actuarial cost of this pension obligation be provided for in thefinancial statements, however, because such costs are funded through the annual Grant-in-Aid asthey arise, no such net provision is considered necessary and accordingly it has not been made.

Because the Trust is not entitled to reclaim value added tax, all costs, assets and liabilities are, whereappropriate, inclusive thereof.

All income and expenditure arising in connection with the activities of the Library are dealt with in theStatement of Financial Activities except that expenditure paid directly by the Department of Arts,Heritage and the Gaeltacht is not included in the financial statements.

b Heritage assetsThe principal asset of the Library is the invaluable and extensive collection which consists of ancientbiblical papyri; exceptional Islamic manuscripts of outstanding cultural and artistic value; Japanese,Chinese and European manuscripts; an Imperial Mughal Indian painting collection, one of the finest inexistence; valuable printed books, prints, drawings; and important decorative arts objects from Asiaand Europe. The Library is regarded as holding one of the finest collections of its kind ever amassedby a single connoisseur-collector. Further information is given in note 8.

No value recognition is given to this material asset in these Financial Statements as the Collection isinalienable, unique, irreplaceable and extensive, and information on its value is not readily availableand cannot be obtained at a cost commensurate with the benefits to users of the financial statements.

All expenditure on additions to, and management of, the Collection is charged to the Statement ofFinancial Activities as incurred. Heritage assets purchased or donated within the last five years areset out in note 8 to the balance sheet at cost or valuation at the time of acquisition, where such avaluation is reasonably obtainable. Valuations of donations are carried out during the year ofacquisition by the Library’s curators and, where appropriate, with reference to external experts and/orrecent sales of similar objects.

c GrantsGrants from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht are dealt with in the Statement ofFinancial Activities on an accruals basis.

d Sponsorship, subscriptions and similar incomeSponsorship, subscriptions and similar income are accounted for as restricted funds when sodesignated by the contributor. Such funds receivable for restricted purposes are dealt with through theStatement of Financial Activities - restricted funds, on an accruals basis. Expenditure from these fundsis dealt with in the specific funds through the Statement of Financial Activities.

Funds receivable for which there is no specific purpose designated by the contributor, are dealt with inthe Statement of Financial Activities - unrestricted funds, on an accruals basis.

e Tangible fixed assets and depreciationThe Library's long leasehold premises at Dublin Castle and most of its initial fit-out were provided by theState and accordingly are excluded from the financial statements.

Other tangible fixed assets acquired by the Library are stated at cost less accumulated depreciation.

8 Heritage assets

As noted in note 1 (b), heritage assets have not been included in the financial statements as information ontheir value or cost is not attainable. However information regarding the collection is set out below.

(a) Nature and scale of the collectionChester Beatty’s library has been described as the finest collection of manuscripts and books madeby a private collector in the twentieth century. It includes representative samples of the world’sheritage (artistic, religious and secular) from about 2700 BC to the present century.

The Western treasures of the Library include some of the earliest sources on papyrus for the bibleand a great library of Manichean texts. The Biblical Papyri, dating from the second to the fourthcentury AD, consist of the earliest known copies of the four gospels and Acts of the Apostles, theLetters of St Paul, the Book of Revelation and various very early Old Testament fragments. Armenianand Western European manuscripts from medieval, Renaissance and modern times, prints, early andfine books and bindings complete a remarkable conspectus of the arts of manuscript production andprinting from many cultures and periods.

Over 6,000 individual items, mainly manuscripts and single-page paintings and calligraphies, make upthe Islamic Collections. This includes more than 260 complete and fragmentary Qur’ans, some datingfrom the late eighth and ninth centuries and including the work of the leading calligraphers of theIslamic world.

The East Asian Collections include a fine series of albums and scrolls from China, the largestcollection of jade books from the Imperial Court outside China and a large collection of textiles anddecorative objects. The Japanese holdings contain many superb painted scrolls from the 17th and18th century, woodblock prints by Hiroshige and Hokusai and many others as well as decorative artobjects.

The size of the collection in numerical terms is almost impossible to quantify as how a single object isdefined does not have a definitive answer; for example, a Japanese painted scroll might be comprisedof a number of separate scrolls.

(b) Heritage Asset managementAcquisitionsChester Beatty’s Will enables the Trustees to add to the collection and notable additions have beenmade over the years, most importantly, additional folios to manuscripts already held in the collection.The Library has also been extremely grateful to receive substantial private donations, which hasenabled it to add to the collections in recent years. The purpose of the collecting policy of the ChesterBeatty Library is to complete, to amplify and to enrich the Chester Beatty Library collections. It is aparticular interest of the Library to collect portions of manuscripts or other works of art already ownedin part by the Library. All acquisitions require the approval of the Board of Trustees.

Preservation and ManagementThe Library has a dedicated Conservation Department that specialises in book and paperconservation. Conservators are involved in every aspect of conservation and preservation to ensurethe safeguarding of the collections during handling, transport, storage and display. The conservatorswork to stabilise and repair the objects in the Collection. All treatments are governed by a policy ofminimum intervention to ensure the historical integrity of the object is maintained. Due to the widevariety of material in the Library, specialist conservators are consulted to treat materials such astextiles and ceramics. All work is carried out in accordance with a strict professional code of conduct.Staff undertake technical examination and research which contributes to a better understanding of theLibrary’s objects and the development of practical conservation techniques. This information isdisseminated through training interns, professional publications, lectures and the Library’s educationprogramme.

The Library records its Collection on a collections management system that includes a description ofthe objects as well as image, age, location and other information. The CBL continues to enhance thedatabase to expand the information recorded on each asset, and improve functionality of thedatabase.

DisposalThe Trustees are constrained by the terms of the Will of Alfred Chester Beatty from disposing of thematerial in the Collection.

12 Development Fund

The Development Fund was set up from the net proceeds of sale in 1999 of the Library's former premisesat Shrewsbury Road less the contribution paid to the Office of Public Works in 2000 towards the cost of fitout of the Clock Tower Building at Dublin Castle under the Cy Pres Scheme of 16 December 1997. TheDevelopment Fund serves as a seed capital fund for a development programme for the Library.
