1. RESEARCH 1.1. SHORT HISTORY The beginning of Hungarian Space Reseach is counted from the 1946 Moon radar experiment of Bay Zoltán. The Rocket Technics Scientific Student Circle found in 1961 at BME had general space research goals, starting with visual satellite observations. From 1967 in the frame of the Soviet Intercosmos cooperation, several Hungarian devices has flown in sparecrafts and satellites, a great number of which were designed and made in KFKI RMKI.

The so far only Hungarian cosmonaut who actually flew was Farkas Bertalan in 1980. This was the first time the Pille dosimeter was used. The renewed version of this device is now flying onboard ISS. In 1986 the VEGA 1 and 2 spacecrafts took close-up images of comet Halley. The video system (and other devices) of the spacecrafts was built in Hungary. Now Hungary is part of ESA PRODEX program and its government has set the goal to became a full member of ESA in the future. 2. ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE EDUCATION See also:teacher training section 2.1. HISTORY

Astronomy was last thaught as one subject at the elementary and middle schools of the present day Hungary 100 years ago. Since than disciplines of Space Sciences are thaught partly in the frame of Geography, partly in Physics classes. Today planetology is thaught in the subject Geography (about 1-3 hrs/12 years), and solar and astrophysics in Physics. In the early communist era, planetary sciences were only in Physics classes as Geography was occupied by the industrial geography subjects. Since the 1980s planetary sciences appeared in 8th class of the elementary school and in a bit more detail in the elective two years of the Geography Highschool curriculum.

2.1.2. PRESENT AND FUTURE Today there is very little of planetary and space sciences in the curricula. Since all natural science subjects at schools get less time, there is no too much hope that it will get more stress in the future in formal education. This is partly because even the teachers can not get a detailed training for this subject. 2.2 ASTRONOMY IN THE „FRAME CURRICULUM” (http://www.om.hu/j222.html) (Source: dr. 3. HIGHER EDUCATION 3.1. HISTORY The teaching of Astronomy originated from the amateur astronomer movement which was lead by Kulin György. The first astronomer minor was started at Eötvös University, Budapest, in 1966, but the first Hungarian university observatory was found in 1755 in Nagyszombat (today in Slovakia). In the first half of the 20th century the department of astronomy was called Dept of Cosmography. The Budapest Astronomy minor was followed by Szeged University in 1999 with its ows major of Astronomer. From 2000, at the Eötvös University the Astronomer education became a major with 10 semesters.

3.1.2. PRESENT Today there is no complex Space Sciences major or department. The astronomer major at Eötvös University became 10-semester major from 2000. From this year the majo

3.1.3. FUTURE It might be possible to form a complex Space Research department or major in the frame of the BME/ELTE campus, where all necessary knowledge and laboratory are in one campus. Though, it is probably not in the near future. (Source: BÉRCZI SZANISZLÓ: Az űrkutatás és az űrtechnológiák oktatása hazánkban (2000). Természet Világa, Űrkutatás) 3.2.1. Now the astronomy dept of ELTE offers one class for teachers. However, future teachers of geography can learn planetology as elective course, future teachers of physics can study astronomy in most uiversities. Present teachers of geography or physics can go the trainings which are organized irregulary. The next one will be in early 2003 for teachers of geography. Organizer: ELTE KAVÜCS
