1. BACKGROUND

A. PreambleIndonesia is the fifth highest tobacco consumption in the word. The National SurveyEconomic (SUSENAS) 1995 showed that 53.4% male age 15 and above are activesmokers and rise to 62.2% in the SUSENAS 2001. The Global Youth Tobacco Survey2000 showed 20.4% of the junior high schools in Jakarta are smoker.The students of junior and senior high schools are teens in their puberty , transitionperiod of childhood to adulthood . This is a period of self searching for self identify andtherefore they are usually very unstable , easily influenced and tends to try the newthings . They hope that it will make them " adult".This condition is being manipulated by the cigarette industry by intensely promotesmoking by music concert, sponsor of sport event, and any activities to influences them.The tobacco industry shows image that smoker are "cool", "macho", "gentleman","modem', etc. On the other hand, information and information on the negative effects ofsmoking on health are almost non-existent. Those exist (usually from the IndonesianGovernment through the Department of Health) do not specifically target young people.Based on the situation, Indonesian Smoking Control Foundation (LM3) organized "APoster Competition among Junior and Senior High School Students in Jakarta andSurrounding Cities (JABODETABEK)". This competition aims to educate thesestudents on dangers of cigarette - smoking through getting their participation inrejecting the cigarette industry's promoting alluring them to start smoking. The activityis also to commemorate World No Tobacco Day 2008 with the theme "Tobacco FreeY outh "

B. AIMS OF THE COMPETITIONS Disseminate information on the dangers of smoking. Get the participation of youth able to say no smoking, and Raise willingness for smoker to stop smoking.

C. COMPETITION RULES This competition kind off two categories : Junior High School (SLTP) and

Senior High School (SLTA) Participants should represent the school Schools to enter registration form 2 April 2008 at the latest Materials for competition not provided by competition committee Poster/s should be original, done on art paper size A3 (30 cm by 42 cm) Poster/s must show

o Getting youth to say "No" to smokingo Youth are responsible and confident without smokingo Youth do not accept advertising/promotion materials from the cigarette

industry Poster/s must be received by committee by 2 May 2008 at the latest Each school is limited to maximum of 5 (five) best entries All schools participating will get a letter of appreciation All posters submitted will be owned and be used for anti-smoking campaigns by

Indonesian Smoking Control Foundation (LM3), but name of creator will bementioned

Winner of competition will be announced by the 19 of may 2008, by letter Jury's decision on winning entries will be final and absolutely. Prizes for winning entries will be given at a ceremony by the Department of

Health of the Republic of Indonesia, commemorating World No Tobacco Day.

D. JuryThe jury consists of experts, one each from:

1. Fuad Baraja (Indonesian Smoking Control Foundation - LM3)2. Setyo Nugroho, SsN (Department of Health Republic of Indonesia)3. Drs. Purnomo Ananto, MM (Department of Education Republic of Indonesia)

E. Prizes1. Junior High School

- First Prize : certificate + Rp 5,000,000.- (five million rupiahs)- Second Prize :: certificate + Rp 3,000,000.- (three million rupiahs)- Third Prize :: certificate + Rp 2,000,000.- (two million rupiahs)

2. Senior High SchoolFirst Prize : certificate + Rp 5,000,000.- (five million rupiahs)Second Prize :: certificate + Rp 3,000,000.- (three million rupiahs)Third Prize :: certificate + Rp 2,000,000.- (two million rupiahs)

II. ACTIVITIES

A. Dissemination of informationDissemination of information of poster competitions was carried out by letter to schooland press release to mass media. The information was kind off rule of competition andprice for the winners.

1. Distribution information of the competition rules.The information had been sent to 100 schools in Jakarta and surrounding cities,kinds of 50 Junior High Schools and 50 Senior High Schools.

2. Press ReleasePress release had been sent to mass media ( news paper and electronic media).The content of release had been published in Kompa s Daily on 1" April, 2008.

B. Registration of Participants and Receipt PostersThere are 94 persons from 35 schools that followed this competition (list bellow)

C. Meeting of Team JuryAll the posters were selected that these fulfill the aims of competition. There were 74posters that fulfill the aims the competition.A number 74 posters were valued by Team Jury to choice the winners. Criteria of valuebase on: content, power, and originality.
