The first three months in 2018 have been fairly slow, but we expect Maintenance Activity to pick up and our expectations are that 2018 will be slightly better than 2017. Oil prices are expected to remain in the region of USD60/bbl to USD70/bbl for WTI Crude for much of 2018.

Increased activity in fracing in West Texas and the Bakken Field in North Dakota will continue, but Oklahoma is toughening its fracing rules as a result of a new cluster of earthquakes which seem to be generated by the fracing process.

US oil driller rig count has passed 800 in number and this is the highest since 2015. Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil exporter, is set to join the shale revolution with plans to start producing un-conventional natural gas in March 2018 and to exploit a deposit that could rival the Eagle Ford formation in Texas.

On Friday March 16th 2018, the High Commissioner of India, His Excellency Bishwadip Dey, invited a selected group of business persons to have dinner with his team at the Palki Restaurant in San Fernando.

The High Commissioner thought it appropriate to meet with South Trinidad business persons so that he could foster business to business relationships between companies in India and Trinidad & Tobago.

Our CEO had an interesting meeting of the minds and the High Commissioner has indicated that he would like to visit our offices at Marabella in April 2018 to engage in further discussions.

As a part of TOSL’s mission to ensure the Safety, Health, Wellbeing of its employees and our commitment to protect and preserve the environment, TOSL has established a Health, Safety and Environment Committee (HSE). The Com-mittee serves as a support structure for enhancing the HSE Culture of the Organization and is geared towards not only meeting the legal requirements of the TT OS&H Act 2004, amended 2006, but also promoting a safe, secure and healthy working environment for all employees at TOSL.

Our goals are simple. They are to: • Promote awareness of the Organization’s HSSE policies to ensure compliance. • Develop, establish and maintain a high safety culture within our organization through participation in HSE initiatives. • Promote health and well-being amongst our employees. • Encourage the protection and sustainability of our environment.

With this in mind, the Committee has embarked on its first project to improve the health and well-being of the employ-ees. The initial phase involves a pilot or baseline study for the organization to gather data on the health and wellness status of the employees. Working as a team, the Committee has developed an online Health and Well-being Survey that will be distributed to all employees by the end of the first quarter of 2018. Hence, the Committee members will be on a drive to encourage participation from all employees.

It is the intention that this data will be collected, analysed and used to implement future health and well-being pro-grammes within the organization. The input of each employee is therefore critical to the success of this initiative. The HSE Committee looks forward to your support with this project, as we look forward to creating an environment for a healthier and happier you!

Do you know your HSE Committee members? NB: The names in brackets are the alternates. • Inventory Management – Keiron George (Marsha Fortune) • Corporate Governance - Asha Salick (Lisa Mohammed) • Industrial Sales - David Puchoon (Avinash Pirmal) • PMO – Sheldon Babwah (Sade Khan) • Chemicals – Anita Sooknanan (Adrian Cordner) • EIA – Shane Lewis (Jason Ramsaran/Sabrina Rampaul) • Construction & Maintenance – Bobby Mangroo (Ramesh Badri) • Inspection & Testing – Keston Kissoon • Rotating Equipment – Mark Gopiechansingh (Andre Khan/Shervon Smith)

In this Horizon issue, we will be having a one-on-one discussion with another of our long service employees, Jeremy Jagroopsingh, Refractory & Insulation Supervisor.

1.) How many years have you worked at TOSL? March 18th 2018 made it fifteen (15) years that I have been working at TOSL.

2.) Based on your experience with us, what do you think it takes to succeed at this company? One must be dedicated, committed, diligent, honest and sincere to both himself/herself and TOSL in order to be successful.

3.) What suggestions for improvements do you have to make our workplace better? I would like to see our general managers and other managers become more involved in major jobs by visiting the sites

to see some of the good and bad that workers and supervisors have to endure. Also, I would like to see our general managers and other managers intermingle with our clients’ managers because after speaking with one of the heads of TOSL, it was indicated to me that 95% of our general managers and other managers are not known to our clients. They only know the CEO of TOSL. Secondly, when long-term jobs arise, if it could be implemented, long serving em-ployees (especially those working at the warehouse) should be given the opportunity to share in a ‘piece of the pie.’

4.) What is most satisfying/enjoyable about your job and working with TOSL? The most satisfying thing about my job is being able to experience the safe and timely execution of a job, as well as the

comradery and togetherness that is shared between my workers and myself.

5.) What has been your most memorable experience thus far with TOSL? There are many memorable experiences that come to mind; however, the ones that stand out to me are the social

events/gatherings that created a sense of togetherness and unity amongst the employees of TOSL. One event in par-ticular was the Christmas party of 2003 in which Larry and I barbequed an entire pig of which we started at about 6:00 a.m. and finished at 6:30 p.m. Another memorable event for me was the TOSL curry duck competition in which Azam, was my main competitor. At the end of the competition, the victory did not belong to him as our department was the champion!

6.) What in your mind is the most significant change at TOSL when you compare the present to the days when you had just started? The most significant change from the year 2003 to present was seeing the expansion and broadening of TOSL in vari-

ous areas, as well as being a part of experiencing what our CEO has done to ensure that the company has become one of the top Engineering Companies in the Caribbean.

7.) How well do you think your training and development needs were assessed and met? On a scale of 1-10, I would say 8.

8.) If you were retiring tomorrow, what one thing you would like to be remembered for and feel most proud of accomplishing for TOSL? One of the things that I would like to be remembered for is being a part of making TOSL the preferred and number one

Contractor for Petrotrin in the field of Refractory, Insulation, Grouting and Fireproofing.

9.) What is the first word that comes to mind when you think of TOSL? Family (Con’t on Pg. 8)

@..players must now bring their “A” act to the fore so that we can compete on a global scale.

At TOSL, we have recognized this for some time now and we have re-organized our business processes and our approach to the market. In order to provide customer satisfaction and cut costs, we aim to complete work within budget and in time and, as such, secure the repeat business.

We are of the view that the companies that will survive and thrive are those that are prepared to provide exceptional service to the customer in a cost-efficient manner and we have designed our business to deliver those results.

The Guyana oil find will assist the Services Industry in Trinidad, but we in Trinidad must be prepared to change our busi-ness model in order to access the Guyanese Market. The future is bright for those who are prepared to do the hard work.

What is it?

• A SMART matrix is a communication and planning tool used to identify the specifics of actions or tasks. • SMART here stands for specific, measurable, attainable, resources, and time. • It is an L-shaped matrix designed to capture the key points of a team’s project objectives. • It provides a process to review how actions are being implemented around various attributes.

When to use it?

• When you need to analyse an implementation plan’s tasks to ensure they are on track. • When you need to understand the amount of resources needed to implement a plan. • When you need to understand how the various tasks are sequenced and related.

How to use it?

• On a piece of flip chart paper draw an L-shaped matrix with five columns labelled Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Resources, and Time.

• Write the implementation plan title in the upper left of the chart. • Detail the specific tasks to be performed. Make the task statement detailed and well defined. The example in the

figure below shows a combination of task and objective statements providing measures, outcomes, and time frames.

• For each detailed specific task: ◊ Define a measure or indicator that can be tracked. ◊ Determine how it will be attained in actionable terms that are realistic and feasible. ◊ Indicate the amount and type of resources required to complete each task identified.

◊ Identify the timeline for completion. • Once you have completed the matrix, review the results with the implementation team to ensure that you have ac-

counted for and recorded everything. • Review the matrix to make sure the timeline is realistic and all tasks are not due to be completed on the same day. • Review the matrix and get a feel for the total amount of resources required. Determine if they are available or if

adjustments need to be made.

In 2017, TOSL personnel expressed an interest in learning the basic concepts of Project Management and hence, they were given the opportunity to attend the project management training course titled “Project Management Concepts and Applications”. Classes were held during the lunch period. The training involved interactive discussions and presentations on PowerPoint slides while actual projects were used as case studies to reinforce the learnings.

The training was facilitated by Michael Charles, our General Manager - Projects from Radient Project Management Services Ltd. Participants were introduced to the concept of the TOSL Project Life Cycle and how it is applied in the working environ-ment. The course took participants through the five key phases of a typical project: Initiation, Planning, Execution, Monitor-ing & Control, and Close Out.

The triple constraints of Scope, Budget and Schedule were introduced. This involved how to decompose the scope of works using the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) process for easier management, understanding the difference between Estimat-ing and Budgeting, and how to develop the Gantt schedule.

The participants learnt about the need for a Project Charter, as well as how to recognise key Stakeholders and manage their expectations. In addition, the concept of Project Risk and how to plan the mitigating strategies so that project outcome would not be negatively affected were discussed in depth. The “soft skills” required by the project leader for leading and managing the project team and how to deal with conflicts were also discussed.

The application of the project management processes on TOSL’s Bid Management activi-ties including winning the contract and then executing the works was dealt with in detail so that participants were able to take the practi-cal learnings to their actual work.

At the end of course, participants were re-quired to demonstrate their new-found knowledge by participating in an exam. The persons who successfully completed the course were: Janelle Thomas, Lisa Ramper-sad, Vedesh Maharaj, Daron Rambarran, Gregory Quesnel, Marsha Noor, Joan Ramdhanee, Joanne Wallace and Savitri Balkissoon.

At an early age, drawing and crafting was an enjoyable past time for our Accounting Assistant, Anastasia Chin-a-fat, as she spent most of her spare time learning new

skills and techniques in perfecting drawing. For her, it started off as imitating a picture

or item she had seen onto a sheet of paper. Being exposed to a variety of skills and techniques such as three-minute sketching, negative and positive drawing, batik style, visual arts, graphic designing, printing & mould making, it was easy to experiment with different mediums before specializing.

At the CXC Level, Anastasia won an award for outstanding skills in Art. She was acknowledged for experimenting with different mediums such as acrylic & water colour paints, chalk pastels, graphite pencils, char-coal and submitting 21 pieces of art which topped the class for the most work output. To this day, her works are displayed on the Murals at the side of San Fernando Government Secondary School building.

It has been her fascination to create illusions which are creative, imaginative and interpretative after famous artist in history such as Salvador Dali (Surrealist), Frida Kahlo (Symbolist), Georgia O’Keeffe (Creative & Interpretive) and our local artist, Shastri Maharaj (East Indian culture). This gave Anastasia a clearer direction as to what her art should portray. Using such tech-niques studied by famous artists, she specialized her works on focusing on women in terms of what they stand for in society, East Indian culture and the pressures of male domi-nance which exist in some aspects of the worldwide society amongst women of different ethnicities.

Presently, Anastasia continues her art at a professional level in visual arts and graphic de-signing. In the future, she would like to further her studies at the university level. It is, in

her opinion, that learning is never ending, but art as a self-expression is unique in its form, though at the same time sending a message to the world that women are equal .

Every step you make in life is a path that not only you have set out on, but a journey that was already destined for you. The moment you were brought into this world, you were given a purpose. A great man once said, "The ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do". These words are so profound because the imagi-nation of impacting the world greatly resides in each of us at some point. Life may be full of obstacles and distractions along the way, but what better way to find true success by challenging and overcoming those obstacles and distractions.

If you have a dream that someday you may become someone bigger than the person you are presently, don't let that dream die because the moment you stop setting goals for yourself is the moment your existence becomes dormant to the world. Receive all negative comments in the most constructive way and in return, respond with magnitudes of positivity that neutralizes those unwanted energy. Let's make a conscious effort to be less pessimistic and more optimistic about our daily routines. Let's not take the persons working with & around us and most importantly the ones who live with us away from work for granted.

Within the first paragraph I quoted a phrase delivered by someone I perceive to have been a great man, not only be-cause of the huge impact he had on this world, but the chal-lenges he was able to overcome to reach to the pinnacle of his success. This great man is no other than the late Steve Jobs. Technology has evolved tremendously in the last dec-ade to the point where you can connect with someone visu-ally from across the world in the palm of one’s hands. In 1992, the first smartphone called the "Simon Personal Com-municator" was created by IBM. Although this smartphone was the predecessor of all the current smart mobile technol-ogy that we know today, what has made its permanent im-pact on today's world is Apple with all its technological ad-vancements. Steve Jobs was not only an Entrepreneur and American Inventor, but he was also a great visionary. He knew the only way to make it to the top of all his competitors was to give the customers everything that they desired.

(Con ’ t f r om Pg .3 )(Con ’ t f r om Pg .3 )(Con ’ t f r om Pg .3 )(Con ’ t f r om Pg .3 ) 10.) Why have you chosen to stay with TOSL and not move to other jobs, as most people do these days? I have chosen to stay at TOSL because it is one of the best Engineering Companies in the Caribbean and I enjoy

working for the company. The fairness and dedication that our CEO has meted out to me, to other workers and to the company is very justifiable and there has not been a day that I have regretted working at TOSL. If one is not dedicated, committed, honest, truthful and sincere to themselves and to the company, and do not enjoy what they do, they would always be like rolling stones moving from one job to another. (We refer to these people as square pegs in round holes.)
