JOINT STATEMENTThe Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) and the Australian Academy for Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) jointly organized a Workshop on Energy Efficiency in New Delhi on the 11th and 12th of April, 2011. The Workshop focused on experiences and opportunities for the two Academies to collaborate in areas of energy-efficiency enhancement in the power generation and the buildings sectors. The discussions at the Workshop identified a range of opportunities for Australia-India collaboration, and the following were highlighted as strategic areas for Academy-to-Academy collaboration:Performance enhancement of existing power
plants
Technology and best practices for energy
efficiency upgrades
Coal blending and coal performance
modeling
New Technologies for Power Generation
Hybrid gasification –solar heat systems
Advanced coal technologies, such as fuel
cells and coal-powered diesel engines
Carbon capture and utilization
Distributed generation management
Intelligent grids, including smart metering,
optimal decision making and renewables
integration
Efficient grid-scale inverters
Building Energy Efficiency
Implementation, compliance and evaluation
of performance-based rating system for new
buildings
Development of thermal comfort conditions
in warmer climates and its applications
Building energy efficiency upgrade
Creation of demand for building-energy
efficiency upgrade
Building energy-efficiency technology
development
Innovative space conditioning technologies
INAE and ATSE resolve to:Use their best efforts to promote, facilitate
and evaluate a range of collaboration
activities in the identified strategic areas
Encourage and support national and bilateral
agencies, such as the Australia-India Strategic
Research Fund, to adopt the strategic areas
as priorities for funding
Encourage partnerships in the strategic areas,
through workshops, collaborative research,
first-of-a-kind pilots, etc.
Review progress of achievement in these
strategic areas.
TAKEOUT MESSAGEThe Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) and the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) organised a successful Workshop on Energy Efficiency in New Delhi, 11-12 April 2011. The two day event, followed by technical visits, drew together experts from the fields of Energy Efficiency in Power Generation and in Building Sectors, to discuss the issues which face both countries and how technologies can be used most effectively to enhance energy-efficiency.
Australia has placed India in the front rank of its international partnerships. India’s GDP is currently increasing at 8-9% per annum, driving an increase in energy demand of 10-12% per annum. Coal is the chief power source for both India and Australia, accounting for approximately 80% of power generation in both countries. Enhanced energy efficiency in coal-based power generation is therefore highly important to the energy strategies for both countries. Australia and India are also developing commercial and residential spaces which reflect the most energy-efficient designs and construction methods, and both countries face similar design and policy challenges in this field.
The INAE President, Dr Baldev Raj, officially opened the Workshop, with the Deputy Australian High Commissioner, Dr Lachlan Strahan, together with senior members of the Government of India.
We wish to especially thank and acknowledge the important contribution by Dr Ajay Mathur, Director-General, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, New Delhi, Indian Workshop Chair and Mr Martin Thomas AM FTSE the Australian Workshop Convenor.
The Workshop was supported by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) through the International Science Linkages – Science Academies Program (ISL-SAP).
Since 1997 ATSE has enjoyed strong linkages with INAE, through a strategic program of Workshops focusing on Energy, ICT and Remote Sensing, India’s foremost academic and advisory institution in engineering and technological science.
ATSE wishes to thank the Indian National Academy of Engineering for hosting this successful Workshop and the Australian High Commission for their support of this Workshop.
