CALICE Beam Test

• 1st period : May SiW-ECAL + AHCAL• 2nd period : July SiW-ECAL + AHCAL• 3rd period : Sep ScW-ECAL + AHCAL• 4th period : early in next year ?

• Important imformation can be found in the CALICE BT web page: http://www-flc.desy.de/hcal/fnaltestbeam/shift_schedule_2008.php.htm

• You can see on CALICE e-log what is currently ongoing : https://ttfinfo.desy.de/CALICEelog-sec/index.jsp Contact me for login-name and password.

Silicon-W ECAL / Analog-HCAL

• Fully functional at the beginning of 2nd DAQ period.

Beam Beam

Page 4: Report from CALICE Beam Test 2 nd DAQ taking period and Plan for 3 rd DAQ period

Beam-line setup

• 4 layers of chambers (from Japan)• Trigger counters with area of 10x10, 100x100 mm.• 2 Cerenkov conters are installed in upstream.

Page 5: Report from CALICE Beam Test 2 nd DAQ taking period and Plan for 3 rd DAQ period

TriggersAll the triggers are made with combination of10x10, C1, C2 and 100x100 trigger signal.

• 10x10 [mm] minimum bias trigger• Electron trigger

– 10x10 & C1 & C2• Pion trigger

– 10 x 10 & !C1 & !C2• 100x100 [mm] muon trigger• Beam-halo veto counter is also available• (1mx1m with 20cm hole)

Beam status

• The beam is delivered as 4-sec spill per minute.• Characteristics of the beam strongly depend on

beam energy.– Spot size– Rate– e/pi fraction– Momentum spread– Fraction of multi-particle event

Accelerator conditions

• To the MT6, beam will be delivered for nominally 12 ~ 15 hours a day.

• Beam time will be (hopefully) daytime, but it may change depending on accelerator schedule.

• Moreover sometimes accelerator is quite unstable, which results in loss of our DAQ time.

• Therefore clear priorization of the DAQ programs and run scheduling with enough safety margin is necessary.

• Any low priority programs should be scheduled as optional plans.

Updates on ScECAL Beam TestPlans

News :Out beam time has been changedfromSep 1st – 26th

ToSep 3rd – 29th

due to a schedule of safety review people.

Some experts will kindly help us.• Alex Kaplan (from DESY AHCAL, while period)• Uwe Cornett (engineer from DESY, Sep 20-26th)• Vishnu Zutshi (can give help from NIU)

Very Tentative Run plan

0. Commissioning run with muon and electron beams. (~7 days)1. MIP calibration with muon beam. (3 days)

– Events are triggered by 10x10 cm muon counter.– Inject 100k muons @ 30 GeV in each strip.

2. Precise MIP scan on one strip.(2 days)3. Energy scan with electron beam. (5 days)

– 1, 2,4,8,16,32 (+ higher if possible) GeV, 250k events at each beam energy.

– Both in uniform and non-uniform regions.4. Energy scan with pion beam. (2 days)

– 1, 2,4,8,16,32,60 GeV, 250k events at each energy.– Central region only?

Page 11: Report from CALICE Beam Test 2 nd DAQ taking period and Plan for 3 rd DAQ period

Very Tentative Run plan 5. Angular scan with electron beam. (4 days)

– At 10, 20, 30 degrees.– 2,4,8,16,32 GeV, ~250k Events at each energy.

6. Angular scan with pion beam? (3 days)7. Pi0 run (? days)

– Put target on upstream, perform energy scan with pion beam.

• ~ 26 days in total without pion run.

Other runs :• Daily noise, LED runs during beam-off time• Response curve measurement after finishing the beam

period.

Page 12: Report from CALICE Beam Test 2 nd DAQ taking period and Plan for 3 rd DAQ period

0 run• Target should be put at 280cm upstream from the ECAL surface (=CAL inner radius with GLD-prime detector).• On beamline, drift chamber support frame is located at that point.• Target will be ~6cm Iron?• How many events we will collect at which energy? + or - for secondary beam ?• Is it really possible to reconstruct the 0 even in low energy region?• Simulation study is indispensable to make the run plan, but time is

quite limited.• Need more extensive study to make 0 run plan. Otherwise should we just make it as an optional plan? Or expect 4th beam time in next year?

Page 13: Report from CALICE Beam Test 2 nd DAQ taking period and Plan for 3 rd DAQ period

0 runThe iron target should be put hereIn drift chamber frame

Shift plan• During Sep 1th-26th, we will arrange 2 shifts per a

day, 7-9 hours for each shift.• 1-3 people for a shift from the ScECAL group.• Shifters are responsible to :

– Follow run plan given by run coordinator– contact accelerator control to request desired beam.– Running DAQ and checking data with online monitor– Monitor detector status– Logging everything into e-log– Report any news or problems to experts immediately.

Data flow, Analysis• Very quick analysis is done by online display.• Raw data files are buffered on RAID disk at MT6, and

transferred to GRID disks at DESY and LLAL.• After the copy, raw data are converted to LCIO on GRID. -> Need to have the GRID account to access to the lcio data.• Data size : 50~60 kB/event -> 10-15 GB for 250k events. -> 1-2 TB for whole DAQ program?• For a quick analysis, we will create simple root ntuples from

those raw or lcio data.• During the data taking, everyone must be involved to the

analysis with the simple ntuples on analysis PC. (need to setup analysis environment on the analysis PC.)

Radioactive source

• It will not be easy to borrow it at FNAL, since we need:– Special request to borrow,– Arrangement of delivery,– Additional training and exam to handle.

• So far no rad. source is used for the CALICE beam test.• Hopefully we would NOT like to use the rad. source at FNAL.-> Dead channel check have to be done in Japan.• Or should we prepare to borrow it anyway?

Some more things to do

• If you have a laptop, please bring it to FNAL. There is no public terminal you can use on beamline. Both wired and wireless network are available at FNAL.• All the computer have to be kerberized. You need to install kerberos client on your machine to log-on

to analysis PC. If sshd is running on your machine, you must stop it.• Please get GRID account as much as possible. Sooner or later GRID access is necessary for later data

analysis.
