Łódź Design Festival 2017:

11th edition of Łódź Design Festival with inspirational exhibitions, lectures and workshops has come to an end. The Festival featured main programme exhibitions, presentations of the most significant brands and the best designers. During the opening of the Festival we met the winner of the main prize in the make me! competition for young designers as well as the winners of the Well-Done contest. The official opening ended with a meeting with Oscar Ziêta. During the main weekend we also met the winners of the must have quality marks and Mazda Design Awards.

„NEW OLD”

Main programme exhibition of the 11th edition o ŁDF - „NEW /OLD”: how design can help people lead healthier and more satisfying life in old age? How will designers face the needs of a rapidly aging society? The exhibition was divided into 6 sections: Old age, Identity, House, Community, Work and Mobility. Curators: Jeremy Myerson and Helen Hamlyn. Authors of presented objects: Yves Béhar/fuseproject, Konstantin Grcic, Future Facility, Special Projects, IDEO, Priestman Goode. „URBAN DAYDREAMING”

Rêveries Urbaines – second exhibition of the main programme of 11th ŁDF is a wide-ranging study of possible development solutions for cities. The immersive staging of this exhibition aims to transport the visitor into different scenarios; each model is like a separate act of an urban play. Intense research resulted in selecting fourteen proposals that were turned into detailed study models. Curators: Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec and Catharine Rossi. Organizer: Vitra Design Museum.

„LET’S TALK ABOUT GARBAGE”

Project was presented at the main exhibition of the 15th International Biennale of Architecture in Venice. At Łódź Design Festival it was shown in its new edition. The authors, Hugon Kowalski and Marcin Szczelina, want to draw attention to the problem of waste overproduction and the possibilities of using it in architecture. They lead us through a brief history of waste and the Third World’s largest landfills. The patron of the exhibition was IKEA Retail Poland.

make me! 2017

make me! Is currently one of the most important international competitions for young designers. In 2017 there were 178 submissions from following countries: Spain, Netherlands, Columbia, Ukraine, China, USA, South Korea, Mexico, Denmark, Italy, Hungary, Great Britain, Austria, Norway, Romania, Germany, Ireland, France, Greece, Moldova, Sweden, Slovakia, Russia and Czech Republic. On October 3rd during the opening of the festival the winners of the make me! competition were awarded.

Agnieszka Jacobson-Cielecka, member of the jury of make me! contest, associated with this event since its very start presented the assumptions of make me! and the winners of all editions.

Special Award, funded by Łódź Design Festival, in the amount of 10.000 PLN went to Jan Libera – London City Trailer, Poland.

Special prize, sponsored by Interprint in the amount of 5.000 PLN went to Magdalena Kucharska (Hadaki) – Baltica, Poland

make me! 2017

The main prize – Parady¿ Award and 20.000 PLN sponsored by the Patron of the Festival – Ceramika Parady¿ went to Benno Brucksch for his project: Erde Wachs Stift // Crayons out of soil.

must have 2017

The must have exhibition is the result of a plebiscite organized by Łódź Design Festival for 7 years. The Board of Experts, consisting of journalists and representatives of design centers in Poland, distinguishes the best-designed novelties from Polish designers and manufacturers. During the festival the chosen items could be seen live at the special must have exhibition. At the ceremonial gala their authors received statuettes designed by Bartek Mejor and produced by the factory Porcelana Kristoff.

Mazda Design Award 2017

During the Festival the winners of the Mazda Design competition were presented. On festival’s Saturday we met the first winner of the new non-competition award worth 50.000 PLN - Mazda Design Award’17 - for the best project realized in Poland in the last 3 years.

The winner of the GRAND PRIX and the 15.000 PLN prize was Marek Kasperek with his work “Turn to live” submitted in the HUMAN category. Marcin Rusak received the Mazda Design Award 2017 in the amount of 50.000 PLN for the collection FLORA

City Avant-garde

On Sunday, October 8th, there was a block held under the patronage of Ceramika Paradyż. It was officially initiated by the President of the Board of Ceramika Paradyż Mr. Adam Tępiński and the Director of ŁDF Mr. Michał Piernikowski. Jenny B. Osuldsen from Snøhetta studio and Renato Rizzi were the main guests. After the speeches there was the premiere of a film „U) życie miasta”. The filmmakers asked random inhabitants how do the buildings that won the most important awards and recognition of the industry in Poland and in the world „work” - function in a city. Introduction was made by Anna Ostrowska from Bryła.pl

Special guest - SNØHETTA

The special guest of the Festival was Jenny B. Osuldsen from the world famous Snøhetta architectural studio that works in the area of architecture, landscape architecture, interior architecture and design, employing 180 people from 30 different countries. In 1989 the studio got its first commission - the design of the Alexandrian Library in Egypt. This project is one of the best contemporary architectural examples, and at the same time a model of the Snøhetta architects’ approach to designing.

Special guest - Renato RizziAs part of the festival, we hosted the famous Italian architect Renato Rizzi, who worked for 10 years in New York in the studio of Peter Eiseman and is currently lecturing at the IUAV University in Venice. The architect is known in Poland as a designer of the Shakespeare Theater in Gdañsk, his other projects are among others Palazzo Camponeschi in Aquila, Trentino Sports Center, Depero Museum in Rovereto, Port Elisabeth in South Africa.

Renato Rizzi came at the invitation of ICE - Agency for Promotion and Internationalization of Enterprises in The Italian Trade Promotion Section of the Italian Embassy - the Italian Government Agenda.

ARCHIBLOK

Second edition of the event addressed to architects and architecture lovers. It featured presentations of invited studios (WWAA, Group Headquarters, Architecture Snob and UGO Architecture, HS99, Ultra Architects) and discussion on the condition of Polish architecture led by Filip Springer.

Series of dynamic speeches about trends in interior design. Presentations were led by representatives of companies from the interior design industry as well as the journalists and experts: Ewa Mierzejewska (Dom & Wnętrze), Zuzanna Mikołajczyk (Mikomax Smart Office), Joanna Real-Studzińska and Beata Kwiatkowska (Make Home Easier), Maurizio Burrato (Interprint), Artur Śleziak (Chors), Joanna Gralewska (MDD), Marta Krupiñska (VOX).

TRENDS – „A.NEW_talks about trends”

In four interviews conducted live at the Łódź Design Festival stage, both representatives of international companies, independent experts and start-up owners answered questions about generative design, industry 4.0, circular economy and the influence of commonly used interior materials on the air quality in our homes and offices. Talks were moderated by Michał Mazur – TrendNomad.com

The City and the Forest

Metings with design dedicated to children create a space of educational fun for the youngest audience of Łódź Design Festival. This year we have organized interactive creative workshops and walks around exhibitions. At the workshops we focused on experimenting with the laws of physics, cognition of chemistry and science, as well as bringing children closer to the world of 3D printing technology, building robots, programming and coding.

Mobile Culture Institute

Did you know how bird nests are made? How many dots does the ladybird have and what does it eat for dinner? Together with Ewa Solarz, curator of the exhibition, Ewa Bochen and Maciej Jelski from Kosmos Project, who took care of the scenography of the exhibition, and Małgorzata Gurowska responsible for the graphic design we invited parents and their children to visit an amazing piece of forest.

Mobile Culture Institute

The Mobile Culture Institute is a black, multifunctional container that travels through Europe not only to present but also to search for culture and creativity. On October 3rd it came to Łódź Design Festival. Inside, the Polish Design Island 2017 exhibition wwas presented. 27 designers, cooperation of 9 regions of Poland, 4 European cities, 6000 km of MIK journey and 7 weeks of exposition is this year’s edition of the PDI festival. This year’s edition deals with the slogan “Ecology”. Almost 30 objects represent the idea of sustainable development, showing different methods of designing forms, functions or the meaning of minimizing the so-called food ecoprint.

It is an exclusive and unique album, created by the SLOW Foundation. Basing on the albuman exhibition was prepared. So far it was shown in Budapest and Vienna. It was presented in Poland for the first time during the Łódź Design Festival. It consisted of 39 works of the best contemporary Polish illustrators. For decades there has been no similar publication and the SLOW Foundation thought that it was time to change it.

Mystery Things Museum

A collection of interesting and beautiful objects whose functions are difficult to understand. What purpose do they serve? Why were they made? Mystery Things Museum is a project generated by local community. It travels to different locations and still grows. Anyone can add an object to the collection but it has to be mysterious and small in size.

ChordAt Boleslawiec, ceramics have been produced for over two centuries.Workers use traditional stamping methods and imprint each piece with decorative patterns through skilled and deft movements of the banding wheel. The myriad movements, stampings and actions of this bustling ceramics workshop combine in a certain necessary pattern to produce its own distinctive rhythm.As these pieces are not machine made, they each carry the coveted “Handmade” mark so valued by their owners.

The tableware set was produced on a factory production line by workers wearing gloves whose fingertips were dipped in cobalt salts. The traces of their touch remain almost invisible until firing, when they appear on the porcelain body, as the cobalt turns dark blue. In this way the porcelain tableware keeps the touch of the workers’ hands, revealing the role of the “human factor” in industrial manufacturing. The series „The Human Trace” was produced as part of the „People from the Porcelain Factory” project in one of the oldest ceramic factories in Poland.

A.NEW cocktail party On Saturday evening of October 7th we invited ŁDF guests to the specially prepared space of BEFORE FOOD MARKET to celebrate the 11th edition of Łódź Design Festival.

MeetBlogIn

On 7-8/10/2017, the fifth edition of MeetBlogIn, a nationwide meeting of interior design bloggers took place. as a part of the Festival. Initiator, originator and principal organizer of the event is Ula Michalak, stylist and author of interiorsdesignblog.com. The event gathered about 50 most active, opinion-forming, selected interior design bloggers from all over Poland.

The main festival centre was located in Fabryka Sztuki’s ART_Inkubator in the very heart of Łódź. Apart from exhibition space, the building also includes studios, galleries, café and spaces for creative and co-working activities. Art_Inkubator is located at 3 Tymienieckiego Str.

Exhibition spaces Exhibition pavillions in the courtyard of ART_Inkubator. Panorama Studio is a special, high quality exhibition pavillion. During the last year’s jubilee edition of the festival we decided to expand the Festival Centre. Also this year the courtyard of Art_Inkubator will house pavillions that will be a place of presentation for Polish and foreign brands as well as Łódź based creatives. In one of the containers we presented the exhibition Polish Design Island 2017 prepared by the association MiastoHolizm.

Textile Museum located in Geyer’s White Factory in Łódź. White Factory is a vast 4-wing complex of industrial buildings. The process of renovating and adapting the monument for museum purposes began in 1955, when there was a decision about locating a new Textile History Museum here.
