As Audubon Canyon Ranch celebrates 50 years of unparalleled conservation and environmental education achievements, we honor the volunteers, donors and supporters who have made our half-century journey so bountiful. Thank you all. We pause to reflect on our accomplishments in 2012…and look ahead to exciting things that await us in 2013.

Highlights from 2012Thanks to generous community support, countless volunteer hours, and the dedication and “can do” attitude of our Board and staff, ACR made enormous progress on a number of critical fronts:

Doubling the Land Holdings of Audubon Canyon Ranch

Earlier this year, ACR successfully concluded the transfer of the 1,300-acre Mayacamas Mountains Sanctuary from the National Audubon Society, culminating years of planning so that this remarkable landscape will be protected in perpetuity by ACR. Then, in mid-December, ACR received the 1,700-acre Modini Ranch from Jim and Shirley Modini, again, a project that had been in process for years. These two adjacent magnificent and stunning land acquisitions will allow ACR to dramatically expand its conservation science, habitat protection and nature education programs with the public.

Surveying Volunteer Satisfaction

This past spring, ACR conducted its first comprehensive, organization-wide Volunteer Satisfaction Survey. Overall satisfaction with the volunteer experience was remarkably high: at least 91% of the respondents indicated “somewhat” to “very satisfied.” The survey is helping us assess and further improve volunteer support, relations and practices. We recognize that our volunteers are our most valuable resource.

Bringing Greater Financial Stability to Audubon Canyon Ranch

In this past year, ACR continued diversifying its revenue streams to provide fiscal stability throughout the year; this is particularly important at a time when the economy remains sluggish and unpredictable. ACR’s fund development strategies now include a membership program, major donors, annual fund, corporate sponsors, special events, earned income, and grants and foundations, the sum of which will provide more stable funding.

Looking aheadGreening ACR — Aligning Operations with Our Core Values

Early in 2013, ACR will begin a number of restoration and renovation projects to improve our buildings and facilities, which are iconic, historic and essential to program delivery. By investing in ACR’s physical assets, we intend to attract greater public support, reduce water and energy consumption and their associated costs, and reduce our carbon footprint so that we are truly “walking the talk!”

Opening Our Gates Wider to the Public

Currently underway is a review of how Audubon Canyon Ranch can increase public visitation and interaction with the communities we serve. Providing new, innovative ways for the public to learn about our work and expanding their opportunities to visit ACR’s preserves will go a long way in broadening our base of support, which is vital to program delivery.

SCHOOL PROGRAMS HIGHLIGHTS • Engaged 6,650 children from 127 Bay

Area schools in nature education on Martin Griffin and Bouverie preserves

• Granted $27,700 in transportation scholarships, ensuring that all Bay Area schools can access our programs, regardless of diminishing field trip budgets

• Graduated 37 junior naturalists, adding these graduates to the Junipers program, now almost 200-members strong

• Conducted the Juniper Summer Science Program with 17 high school participants who together contributed 230 hours of community service to Bouverie Preserve

• Awarded the 2012 David Bouverie Scholarship to high school graduate Nick Tracy

• Inspired an appreciation of nature in 124 students from four inner-city schools through the Overnight Program at Martin Griffin Preserve

• Taught nature concepts through song to 2,550 students during Quercus Quire visits to ten schools

• Started planning for Teacher Focus Groups to assess the current and projected instructional needs of teachers and students

• Began upgrades to teacher packet materials and classroom activity centers, with the generous help of ACR docents

PUBLIC PROGRAMS HIGHLIGHTS• Led 305 visitors on Guided Nature Walks at

Bouverie Preserve

• Welcomed 4,912 visitors to the Martin Griffin Preserve, many of whom enjoyed our renovated Clem Miller Overlook

• Held Backyard Naturalist Series seminars on twilight trails and wildflowers

• Hosted the annual Under the Heronry program, Martin Griffin Preserve Community Day, Bouverie Preserve Open House, and a Science Salon on biomimicry

ADULT EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS• Trained and graduated 20 new Ranch

Guides, who joined 113 already-active guides

• Trained and graduated 32 new Bouverie Preserve Docents, strengthening the corps of 187 active docents

• Offered six sessions of Advanced Docent Training, which were attended by an average of 35 docents each

• Hosted continuing education classes including intertidal invertebrates and birding by ear, as well as educational field trips and popular Quercus Quarterly talks on topics including farming with wildlife, Native American culture, bats, and birding

LAND PRESERVATION AND CONSERVATION SCIENCE HIGHLIGHTS• Established the Mayacamas Mountains

Sanctuary of Audubon Canyon Ranch after more than three years of hard and focused work by dedicated Directors, Advisors and staff

• Began to fully manage the natural resources in the Modini Ingalls Ecological Preserve, based on goals and objectives identified in a recently-completed natural resources management plan

• Continued scientific work to assess rare plants and habitat values in serpentine areas of the Modini Ingalls Ecological Preserve. Staff presented preliminary results to the California Native Plant Society, providing an early glimpse of the biological richness of the central Mayacamas Mountains

• Published research on the behavioral responses of nesting Great Egrets to changes in predation pressure and wetland quality

• Continued to make solid progress on Project GROW (Gathering to Restore Oak Woodlands), which is restoring eight acres of oak woodlands at the Bouverie Preserve

• Battled numerous invasive pest plants to protect the ecological health of ACR sanctuaries

• Mapped the results of a regional shoreline survey revealing the extent of polluting plastic debris (‘spacers’) generated by oyster operations in Drakes Estero

• Partnered with the Marin County Open Space District to help guide their restoration efforts on Kent Island in Bolinas Lagoon, which

has led to actions by the OSD to protect the Great Blue Herons that nest on the island

• Participated on a scientific panel in continuing work to help avoid serious impacts by nest predatory Cattle Egrets on threatened Tricolored Blackbirds in the San Joaquin Valley

• Completed the third year of intensive breeding bird surveys at ACR’s Modini Ingalls Ecological Preserve to document avian values in the central Mayacamas Mountains

• Conducted annual surveys, in collaboration with the California Coastal Conservancy’s Invasive Spartina Project (ISP), to keep non-native Spartina from establishing a presence in the tidal marshes of Tomales Bay

• Completed the 23rd year of monitoring the status of shorebird and waterbird use in Tomales Bay, with particular attention to tracking the benefits of restoration efforts in the Giacomini Wetlands

• Completed the 46th consecutive year of nest monitoring in the heron and egret colony at ACR’s Martin Griffin Preserve

• Completed the 22nd year of continuing study to track the regional status of herons and egrets in the northern San Francisco Bay Area

As Audubon Canyon Ranch celebrates 50 years of unparalleled conservation and environmental education achievements, we honor the volunteers, donors and supporters who have made our half-century journey so bountiful. Thank you all. We pause to reflect on our accomplishments in 2012…and look ahead to exciting things that await us in 2013.

Highlights from 2012Thanks to generous community support, countless volunteer hours, and the dedication and “can do” attitude of our Board and staff, ACR made enormous progress on a number of critical fronts:

Doubling the Land Holdings of Audubon Canyon Ranch

Earlier this year, ACR successfully concluded the transfer of the 1,300-acre Mayacamas Mountains Sanctuary from the National Audubon Society, culminating years of planning so that this remarkable landscape will be protected in perpetuity by ACR. Then, in mid-December, ACR received the 1,700-acre Modini Ranch from Jim and Shirley Modini, again, a project that had been in process for years. These two adjacent magnificent and stunning land acquisitions will allow ACR to dramatically expand its conservation science, habitat protection and nature education programs with the public.

Surveying Volunteer Satisfaction

This past spring, ACR conducted its first comprehensive, organization-wide Volunteer Satisfaction Survey. Overall satisfaction with the volunteer experience was remarkably high: at least 91% of the respondents indicated “somewhat” to “very satisfied.” The survey is helping us assess and further improve volunteer support, relations and practices. We recognize that our volunteers are our most valuable resource.

Bringing Greater Financial Stability to Audubon Canyon Ranch

In this past year, ACR continued diversifying its revenue streams to provide fiscal stability throughout the year; this is particularly important at a time when the economy remains sluggish and unpredictable. ACR’s fund development strategies now include a membership program, major donors, annual fund, corporate sponsors, special events, earned income, and grants and foundations, the sum of which will provide more stable funding.

Looking aheadGreening ACR — Aligning Operations with Our Core Values

Early in 2013, ACR will begin a number of restoration and renovation projects to improve our buildings and facilities, which are iconic, historic and essential to program delivery. By investing in ACR’s physical assets, we intend to attract greater public support, reduce water and energy consumption and their associated costs, and reduce our carbon footprint so that we are truly “walking the talk!”

Opening Our Gates Wider to the Public

Currently underway is a review of how Audubon Canyon Ranch can increase public visitation and interaction with the communities we serve. Providing new, innovative ways for the public to learn about our work and expanding their opportunities to visit ACR’s preserves will go a long way in broadening our base of support, which is vital to program delivery.
