D ean Snyder Construction crews started construction on a
new design-build 40,000 SF Ceco Building Systems
pre-engineered building in May for Stellar Industries, Inc., in
Garner, Iowa. This new building is replacing two existing
buildings and will hold additional manufacturing capacity and
support for the company.
One building has already been demolished while the other is
2/3 torn down. Crews built around and over the remaining 1/3
of the building so Stellar can continue operations in it. Once
the addition is complete, crews will demolish the rest of the
old building.
The project is design-build with DSC Design Group. Crews
are expected to be substantially completed by January 2017.
Stellar Industries, founded in 1990, builds hydraulic truck-
mounted equipment like hooklift hoists, container carriers,
and work truck accessories.

Replace The Lace Campaign
This September, DSC employees worked together to
spread awareness for Childhood Cancer Awareness
Month by replacing their normal shoe laces with
custom gold ones from an organization called
Compass to Care. DSC purchased 50 pairs of
shoelaces and handed them out on jobsites and in
the office, encouraging employees to send a photo
in and use #replacethelace on social media.
Every two minutes a child is diagnosed with
cancer. Proceeds from the sale of the laces goes
towards covering the costs families face when
traveling to and from their child’s cancer treatment.
Custom to Care, a 501(c)(3) charitable
organization, ensures all families can access
life-saving cancer treatment for their children by
helping to schedule and pay for travel arrangements
to the hospital where their child is being treated for
cancer.

DSC Crews Return to Valent
Earlier this year, DSC crews returned to Valent
BioSciences Corporation in Osage, Iowa, to install a
new 130,800 liter (34,553 gallon) Harvest Tank into
their facility to help expand their operations. Crews had to open the 2nd floor area, remove
existing steel and a roof-supported monorail bridge
crane, pour a new equipment pad on the 1st floor, and
set the 47’ tall tank into a 75’ tall building using a
275-ton crane. DSC’s Randy Rinnels was onsite with
the 50-ton crane to help tail the tank.
Crews then had to reframe the 2nd floor and
reinstall the roof, the monorail crane, and sprinkler
system.
Valent BioSciences held their grand
opening in Osage in June 2014. The
130,000 SF plant is the manufacturing and
quality control center for their fermentation
products and is the largest purpose-built
biorational product facility in the world.

VeroBlue Farms in Webster City will soon be producing 7 million
pounds of fish annually and will be the largest onshore, indoor fish
farm facility in North America. The company supplies live and fresh
barramundi fish throughout the United States, primarily to Asian
restaurants.
DSC is onsite working on two design-build projects simultaneously.
Crews started this summer on converting a 270,000 SF manufactur-
ing building once owned by Electrolux into VeroBlue’s Urban Farm
project in Webster City. Once complete, the building will hold
240 fiberglass tanks, each holding 10,000 gallons of water. (In
comparison, their current production has only 36 tanks and produces
about one million fish annually.) The water in the tanks will stay at
80 degrees with the air temperature at 82 degrees. The freshwater
tanks keep the fish active and swimming upstream, and each tank
will raise about 20,000 lbs. of fish annually.
The other project includes expanding their existing operation at their
Nursery outside of Webster City. Here the fish grow to the size of a
finger and then are loaded over to the Urban Farm to finish growing
to 2.5 lbs. This 20,000 SF building will have a truck loading area
addition and will start growing fish on January 1.
Barramundi fish have a six month growing time in this aquaculture
environment. They are imported from Australia and are flaky, white
fish high in Omega 3, low in Omega 6, and have a very high health
content. If they were grown outdoors, it would take them more than
two years to reach 2.5 lbs.
DSC Helping Expand Iowa Aquaculture Project
On Monday, September 19, DSC along with North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) administration, instructors, and students gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony on a new 1,500 sq. ft. house to be built on the NIACC campus by the Building Trades Program. It will later be sold and moved to its permanent location by its new owner. Funding and design for the project came from a $100,000 donation from Dean Snyder Construction.
“This is an excellent opportunity for our students to be a part of a home built from the ground up. Beyond the obvious construction skills they will develop and refine, they will also learn important decision making and problem solving skills that are critical on a job site,” said Gregg Helmich, NIACC Building Trades Instructor.
Welcome to the company, Alece Hall!

Iowa Celebrates Construction Week
Iowa Governor Terry Branstad designated the
first week of October as “Construction
Week.” Construction companies used the
week to promote community awareness of
the construction industry as a safe, exciting,
and rewarding career option. DSC posted
several jobsite progress photos and highlighted
employees throughout our social media pages.
WWA’s Reed Wessman: Licensed Architect
WWA is pleased to announce Reed Wessman has passed his final Architectural Registration Exam to become a
licensed architect in Iowa. He has served as an Architect Intern for 9 years with WWA. Reed says he got into architecture because as a kid he loved drawing floor plans or creating structures with Legos. Now when he is not in the office designing state-of-the-art churches or 21st century learning facilities, he spends his time making epic Lego creations with his boys. One of Reed’s latest projects was just completed in Mason City - an expansion for Grace Church.
Grace Church Expansion
With a growing congregation, Grace Church in Mason City had outgrown its space. Working with WWA, a groundbreaking ceremony was hosted last summer to commence a 13,700 SF addition. Construction was just completed last month. The addition includes classrooms for children in preschool through 5th grade, a full-service kitchen, and a multipurpose room for worship and children’s activities. WWA knew flexibility was key to the project, so they included movable partitions as part of the design. These will be utilized to divide classroom spaces into either seven or eleven individual classrooms.

High School Trades Students Tour Two DSC Jobsites with Lunch & Learn
In our most recent Onsite Lunch & Learn,
industrial tech students from Garner-
Hayfield-Ventura High School were given
the opportunity to step out of the
classroom and onto two of our jobsites in
Garner, Iowa.
GHV Instructor Jeff Short & the students
were led by DSC Project Superintendents Chris Culler and Mike Dorenkamp
around the Stellar Industries addition and the Garner Public Library. Each
Superintendent explained the project, its current progress, and answered
questions.
DSC provided lunch to the students while they learned about the hiring process
at DSC and various positions within the company. NIACC’s Building Trades
Instructor Gregg Helmich was also there to inform the students about their trades
program and scholarship opportunities.
