Aims & Outcomes:

• Aims: To understand the importance of visual direction within graphic design.

• To understand how the principle of Rhythm is utilised to create visual direction.

• To use rhythm as a tool for the creation of visual direction in design.

• Outcomes: You will create a number of examples of visual direction using design elements. You will develop a design which used rhythm to create visual direction.

Bridge Task: Pattern – Wednesday 10th Jan.

• As well as continuing your research into promotional materials you need to do the following:

• Select at least three designs which use pattern in their creation and explain how the pattern is working in the design.

• Relate your reflections to other principles such as visual hierarchy, visual direction, movement and rhythm.

• Discuss how you can use pattern in your own design work.

Repetition

• Repetition works with pattern to make the work of art seem active. The repetition of elements of design creates unity within the work of art.

Design Principles:

• What principle do you see here?

• Rhythm is the repetition or alternation of elements, often with defined intervals between them.

• Rhythm can create a sense of movement, and can establish pattern and texture.

• Rhythm is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement.

• Rhythm creates a mood like music or dancing.

Rhythm

• Rhythm can help control the pace of flow in a composition; through patterned movement.

• Rhythmic patterns are built from elements and the intervals between them, and just as your ear will follow along with the rhythm of a song, your eye will follow rhythm created visually.

• A pattern and a rhythm will exist as soon as you add multiple elements to the page.

• Two of anything implies a structure. It’s going to be there no matter what you do so, again, you should learn to control it.

• Rhythm is created both through the elements the eye follows and the intervals between them. Changes to either and you alter the flow of the rhythm.

• Using the given tiles, organize them into those you think contain rhythm and those that don’t.

• If there are any you are unsure about, add them to another pile.

• Be ready to explain where the rhythm is and how it promotes visual direction.

Rhythm Task 1: In groups of four

Roles

• Team leader:• Role- to take part in developing findings & to make sure the task is completed by the

deadline

• Presenter: • Role – to take part in developing findings & to feedback findings from the group

activity

• Observer:• Role – to take part in developing findings & note strengths and weaknesses of other

team members

• Scribe:• Role- to take part in developing findings & and note them down ready for Presenter

to feed back

Rhythm Task 2: In groups of four

1. Show me three of your chosen images that contain rhythm

2. Explain the features of the rhythm and how they are working in one of your chosen images

3. Explain how you could use rhythm to promote visual direction, show me an example

4. Why do you think the elements in your chosen rhythm image are helping to promote visual direction

5. Select an example of rhythm and explain how you might change the design to make stronger visual direction

6. Do you agree or disagree that rhythm is an affective way to create visual direction? Explain why using an example

Rhythm types:

• Regular: A regular rhythm occurs when the intervals between the elements are similar in size or length

• Flowing: A flowing rhythm gives a sense of movement, and is often more organic in nature

• Progressive: A progressive rhythm shows a sequence of forms through a progression of steps

Rhythm

• Organise your chosen designs into the following groups:

• Rhythm directing the eye

• Rhythm not directing the eye

• Now organise your largest pile into the following groups:

• Which rhythm is regular?

• Which rhythm is flowing?

• Which rhythm is progressive?

Using Rhythm as Visual Direction • The secret to using Rhythm effectively is

to use it to visually direct the eye (a fundamental of graphic design)

• Your rhythm can be decorative and used as repetition (to keep the viewer focused), but it’s primary function is direction.

Page 16: Repetition, Rhythm and PatternJan 07, 2018  · •Rhythm is the repetition or alternation of elements, often with defined intervals between them. •Rhythm can create a sense of movement,

Design Task: Keep these simple as we have limited time.

• Using shapes, lines, and colour create three basic designs that promote rhythm. For example:

• Now add other objects to create three compositions which promote visual direction using your rhythm

• Now create a composition which explore the use of multiple rhythm and visual direction in one design

Bridge Task 8: Rhythm – Thursday 11th 2.30pm.

• Select at least 3 designs which use Rhythm to visual direct the viewer through the design and formally analyse:

• Evaluation – what are your thoughts/feelings about the design/artwork, and why is this?

• Subject – what is the image about, how do you know this?

• Elements – formally analyse the elements and layout.

• Materials – what materials and techniques have been use, and why?

• Intention – what is the designer/artist saying/expressing to the audience, and how?

• Opinion – what is your opinion of the design/artwork, and why?

• Comparison – what can you compare the design to?

• Relevance – how relevant is the design to you, how do you plan to use your findings?
