Stephen toldRepertoire, “After all the yearsof doing Arisaig I wanted to dosomething different, and RockLobster was my father'sfavourite dish. It also ties inmy two great passions – foodand music.” (He was formerlylead singer with BerlinBlondes.)The menu also features manydishes from Stephen's family. He explains, “My familyemigrated to Australia and the"Continental grill" and the"Bistecca grill" were tworestaurants that our

Grandmother owned inAustralia. They moved fromItaly and basically put the foodand recipes they ate at homeon the plate in the restaurantsfor potential customer's. MyGrandmother, always in blackand speaking nothing butItalian, placed greatimportance on patience whencooking and the simplicity ofingredients that matched. Myfather developed this furtherwith awareness and respectfor customers as therestaurants became more of abusiness. This is what madeus, and Rock Lobster is ourtribute to those times.”It's at 1/4 Virginia Court,Glasgow.

A new Italian delight has landed onFinnieston's Argyle Street in the form ofPanevino. It comes from the same peoplebehind Byres Road's Little Italy. This is aclassy looking place to enjoy a bite to eat anda glass of wine – particularly since there aremore than 50 wines offered by the glass. Don'texpect your usual pasta and pizza joint – thisis more of a deli-type eatery with lots of coldmeats and cheeses, and home-made breads,in a pick ‘n’ mix antipasti selection (cut checkthe price before you order because goodProsciutto can set you back a pretty penny).Of course there are hot dishes too, but this isa very authentic Italian offering, whichencourages you to meet after work for nibblesand an apertif. There are plenty of cocktailson offer too. Check out www.panevino.co.ukfor full details. It's open from 11am onwards.

A real Italian delicacy

If you are 30 or older you may remember TheScaramouche on Elderslie Street in Glasgow...a great pub, that sadly closed more than adecade ago. In the intervening years it has hadquite a few incarnations probably the mostsuccessful as The Observatory, but now it hasre-opened, albeit under a completely differentguise. It now has a light and airy feel, with abar on the left and spacious booths. Theconservatory has disappeared and in its placean outside smoking area. But its original namehas been brought back.

Tasting notes

AperolIf you were onEdinburgh’s GeorgeStreet thissummer you can’thave missed theAperol SpritzGarden... as aresult this Italianaperitif is goingdown a storm inbars across thecentral belt. Bright orange incolor, it has a unique taste, thanksto the secret recipe, which hasnever been changed, withinfusions of selected ingredientsincluding bitter and sweet orangesand many other herbs and roots inperfect proportions. Aperol’sstrength is in its low-alcohol contentof only 11percent.The mostpopularway todrink it atthe momentis in anAperol Spritz.

BaileysIf you enjoydrinking Baileysyou are not theonly one - it’s theworld’s biggestliqueur seller, withover 82 millionbottles sold

worldwideeach year.Thatmeansthat everyminute ofthe dayaround2,000 peopleare enjoying aBaileys! It was the world’s firstcream liqueur, a unique blend ofsmooth Irish cream with qualityspirits and whiskey, and it haswon more medals than any of itscompetitors in the prestigious SanFrancisco World Spirits Awardsand is the 2012 Gold Winner. That aside it’s also got a greatnew advertising campaign whichyou can see onwww.barandpub.tv, whichcelebrates all things female. The best way to enjoy Baileys is over ice or in a cocktail - welove Baileys and Amaretto.

DrambuieThe word Drambuie comesfrom the Gaelic ‘an drambuidheach’ which translates as

‘the drink that satisfies’. It wasthe favourite drink ofBonnie Prince Charliewho gave the recipeto John MacKinnonas a thank youfor his help.Today manypeopleconsiderDrambuie asone of their

favourite tipples, particularlyaround Christmas and forspecial occasions. A new rather surrealadvertising campaign has justbeen released which is is quiteextroadinary -look out forthe liquidbeingpoured intoan upsidedown glassand variousotherunusualsituations. sporting gentlemen and high-spirited ladies ever since and morerecently it has been making itspresence felt in Scottish bars.Maybe because it offers aninstantly warming aroma of ginger, zesty lemon, sherbet and goldensyrup - all favourite ingredients ofScots who are known to have asweet tooth. At this time of year we often like to try something a little special to drink. Whether that takes the shape of acocktail or a liqueur often depends on your mood. So here is Penny Devlin’s guide to what’s worth trying thisfestive season.

Kraken BlackedSpiced RumThis has been ahuge hit withbartenders andcustomers over thelast year. It’s a darkspiced Caribbeanrum which was onlyintroduced to theUK in Spring 2010. But before

of the fewrums that I can drinkwithout a mixer. It’s also got one of thebest websitesaround...www.krakenrum.comas well as an

Jose CuervoThis is easily the most populartequila in the world and it’salmost 200 years old. ThisMexican drink is most usuallydrunk as a shot or in a Margarita, and it is often thefirst shot of thenight if youwant to getthe partygoing. This winterbars areserving uptwo greatCuervo shots:

Jim Beam Devil’s CutThis is the latest expression fromJim Beam. As bourbon ages, aportion of the liquid is lost fromthe barrel due to evaporation -

that's the "Angel'sShare." After aging, when the bourbon isdumped out of thebarrel, a certainamount of whiskeyis left trapped withinthe wood of everybarrel. That is the"Devil’s Cut."And to create JimBeam® Devil'sCut™, they tappedinto this process andthen blended it with 6 year oldbourbon and bottled it at 90proof. The result: a robust, premium bourbon with deepcolor, aroma and character. It’s gone down very well intaste tests. It’s now appearing in barsthe length and breadth ofScotland. It can be drunkstraight, although I prefer it

with Coke.

Bols Yoghurt LiqueurThis liqueur was only introducedearlier this year. And its the onlyyoghurt liqueur in the UK. It hasan ABV of 15% and a richsmooth feel on the mouth witha sweet-sour flavour. It’s a freshand natural alternative totraditional cream liqueurs. Why not try a delicious cocktailnamed,

Ithink women need a degree in man texts. Oftenwhen we leave the office for lunch theconversation hovers over one particular

subject... men. Admittedly I am usually the blamefor this topic, as my love life has never been asmooth path (understatement of the year!) to saythe least. However after lunching with colleagues Inow know that I am not the only one who can'tmake sense of what guys are thinking. Especiallywhen you first meet someone and you're stillwalking on egg shells sussing each another out.You know what I'm talking about. A text thatleaves you baffled, or the innuendo that appears tobe too friendly, or is it? The over flirty bodylanguage when you meet, but nothing comes of itthat leaves you thinking ‘does he like me, or is hejust a really nice guy?’. Whycan't they just come out andsay exactly what they arethinking? One thing is forsure though, if we careenough to worry about whatguys are thinking, then weknow we like them, but thepoor bloke needs to figure thatout too.We sit there asking one another‘read this text and tell me whatyou think’ in the hope that wecan decipher some hiddenmessage and understand themind of the guy that sent it.Hours can pass and we all chipin our thoughts and have a goodlaugh in the process, but by theend we are no further forward. The mystery of the man textmessage remains unsolved andthe poor guy is probably thinkinghe's been forgotten about, oblivious to the fact that his texthas been ripped apart andscrutinised word for word whilst awell thought out reply is being typed carefully bythe most sensible person at the table. Theneveryone waits in suspense for a reply that isusually even more confusing. Yes people, textsand dates never mix well. You should never haveto text someone 20 odd times just to get on a firstdate. I mean that's more than I text some of myfamily throughout the entire year!I personally hate texting in the first throes ofdating. It is not exciting, no matter what you try

and say. It isfrustrating, confusing andmostly mentallyexhausting! Bythe time youhave figuredout what theyare actually asking you, it's too late or you are justpast caring. Then you have the text disasters. I rememberonce texting my friend to tell her how “awful mydate was, and that he had wee chicken legs andno doubt a wee acorn to match.” Yes you'veguessed it...I sent the text to him! That was one

god awful moment when I honestlyfelt like I could have died.Surprisingly he did text back, justto say though “I take it there willbe no second date then?” Godloves a trier! Least my text wasdirect and to the point though. There was no confusing what Iwas thinking there... oops! I have also had the “Shall wejust leave things?” text, which isone of the worst. Is that a testquestion? As surely no guy issitting by his phone hoping youreply “yes that would be greatthanks.” If they wanted to leavethings they wouldn't text at allsurely? This is where I can'twork guys out.I recently ranted on Facebookabout how men should justcome right out and ask as girlout if they like her, and not bytext may I add. That night Iwas asked out on more datesthan ever... just kidding. Butit did get a lot of attention

from guys and girls saying they would prefer themore direct approach. So I guess the answer is we will never really knowwhat men are thinking, and perhaps this is part ofthe excitement. No doubt guys will probablyargue that girls are worse. Maybe Apple shouldinvent a text decipher for this very thing. Ormaybe we should get better at picking up thephone and having a conversation just like in theolden days. After all if you don't ask, you don'tget.

So how did you all meet?Ben Goldinger is son of the lateMark Goldinger who launchedBamboo and Bunker, JasperHarrigan is Harri's (Sub Club) son,and Marco Galloway's dad was aproduction manager at TheScottish Opera. I met Jasper at aportfolio course, then we startedto DJ together. I've known Benthe longest, we share a love ofgraffiti art, and I met Marcobecause we are studying thesame course at Uni.

Did you always want to be a DJ?Although I study art andIllustration at Uni, I've alwaysloved music and becameinterested in DJing because of mydad. I got my first set of decks at13 and had my first gig when Iwas 14. My dad had Masnightclub at the time, which isnow One Up and he encouragedme to do an under 18's night. I'vebeen DJing in his pubs and clubsever since. In fact Jasper and Iused to DJ together in The BierHof in Sauchiehall Street afterrealising we had the same tastein music. We then moved to theBier Halle in Gordon Street andstill DJ together for the pre clubnights in The Bier Halle everySaturday night to this day.

How did the idea of reviving “Fresh” come about?Again my Dad's encouragementand the suggestion that I take on

my own clubnight. Jasperand I decidedto start onetogether thenwe brought Benand Marco inas partners tohelp run it. Mydad used to runa night called“Fresh” andHarri was theDJ back in the80s at Joe Paparazzis. We calledour night “Stay Fresh” to paytribute to my dad's night, andamazingly we've been selling outclubs since it launched last yearon the 29th Dec last year In theChambre 69.

So what sets “Stay Fresh” apart from other club nights in Glasgow? For a start our night doesn't takeitself too seriously. You can weartrainers and a snapback hat andyou will get in. The night is morerelaxed and all about the musicwhich is not your usual run of themill sound you hear in mostclubs. We also have completecontrol over the night as Jasperand I DJ and have our own wayof putting the music together, plusthe resident DJ of Stay Fresh isour good mate Danny Obrian, known as “Greenman.” Sobetween us we have a definiteidea of the sound we want tocreate. We try to keep the musicfun and funky from 90s hip hop

to motown funk to deep houseedits. Ben (Goldinger) shares mylove of art and graffiti and Marcoand I are on the same Illustrationcourse at Dundee Uni so togetherwe make all the artwork andposters for our night. We alwayshave artwork in the club;banners, a live projection showand it's all hand made by us.

Who is the most famous DJ you have met?I've met Pete Tong several timesin Ibiza. I love it there and I'vebeen about 12 times, in fact myfirst trip was when I was just 8years old. That's when my daddecided I was old enough to go....

What do you enjoy doing on your day off?I love art and graffiti type basepainting which is liketypographical fonts. It's becamealmost a trade of mine. I metBen because of our mutualinterest in art and we painttogether as often as we can. I'mlucky that I enjoy most of the

This month Repertoire caught up with Glasgow DJ Joshua Barr, sonof the Colin Barr who owns the two Bier Halles in Glasgow andChambre 69. Joshua is one of a team of four who are also sons ofwell known faces in the bar industry who back in the day, were themovers and shakers for the Glasgow club scene. Trying to get theboys together during their busy schedule proved to be a challenge sowe caught up Joshua who gave us the low down on the team'sactivities.

work that we need to put into“Stay Fresh” like working on newtracks and sets on the musicfront, and designing the artworkon the creative side too. Jasperand Ben also work on their ownmusic. Ben produces Hip Hopbeats and Jasper produces Housemusic.

Who or what is your inspiration? My number one inspiration isdefinitely my dad, and the boyswould probably say the sameabout theirs too. The knowledgethat we have learned from each ofthem is invaluable, and we havedefinitely used that experiencewhen planning our club night.Musically as well I take realinspiration from Jasper's dadHarri, and we all respect DJJackmaster who is on NMBRSrecord label.

If you could open your own bar, where would it be?I would like to have a bar in TheFinnieston area, It's definitely up

and coming and a great place forbars. Every other month I hear ofsomething new happening upthere, so it must be the place tobe. I could never decide on aname though. I would pick onethen want to change it two dayslater. For now though I'm stickingto the Bier Halle, it's my homefrom home, I have all mymeetings there and I couldn'timagine being anywhere else atthe moment.

What has been the highlights of “Stay Fresh” so far? There has been so many, butmainly we have been reallytouched by the recognition thenight has got and how popular ithas been. The launch night soldout, then we collaborated withSubrosa at Sub Club. It was myfirst time DJing in the Sub Cluband that night was a sell out too.Keeping in the theme of things wealso threw a “Stay Fresh” birthdayparty in Bamboo for Ben's 20thBirthday. We have marketed allour nights online through

facebook, and we havedesigned our own postercampaigns. Theresponse has just beenamazing. Our last partyat Halloween was acollaboration with one ofChambre 69's mostexciting nights FreakyFreaky which is on thelast Thursday of everymonth run by SamMurray, which was alsoa complete sell out. Our

next night is our one yearanniversary of “Stay Fresh” on the28th December at Chambre 69which will have Jackmaster andresidents. It's already getting agreat response and looks set to beanother big night.

Any future plans in the pipeline?I finish my degree next year thenwho knows? I want to keeprunning the club night and workon the promotional side of thingsand help with my dad's business.I will still keep doing my art, but Isee it as more of a freelance skillI will do on the side. For nowthough I want to keep building“Stay Fresh” and continue to sellout club nights and give people agood time.

The wholemonth of December will be fun-packed, and there will be no hidingyour light under a bushel. The most important decision youmay have to make this month iswhere to have Christmas dinner.Which will come as a relief after thesort of year you have had. Not onlythat but your kind and non-judgemental nature will appeal to anew love interest. But take it slowly. You also may decide, at the lastmoment, to go away for a weekend.Take the opportunity, you won'tregret it. An offer may be comingyour way at the very end of yourmonth, consider it carefully. It couldhave life-chaning consequences.

Pisces19 February - 20th March

The Butterfly and the Pig, 153 Bath Street, Glasgow G2 4SQSince the day The Butterfly and the Pig opened back in 2005 it has been privy to some of the best livebands that play the Glasgow music scene. The great thing about this place is that you will never pay tohear live music, and every night there is something different on the music front, except Mondays whenthere is a quiz night. One of the bands you will find here are The Meatmen who play every Saturdaynight from 10pm. These guys really know how to get the place swinging, and you can expect people allages filling the floor and enjoying some old school jive and rock n’roll. On a Friday from 10pm you willcatch The Fortunate Sons and the Easy Orchestra. Wednesday nights are all about jazz with music fromDavid Bowden. On a Sunday there is an open stage with Carl & Co from 8.30pm where you can takethe mic if you fancy yourself as a bit of a chanter. One night coming up that looksset to be a big one, is a Joe Strummer Memorial show byClash tribute band Counterfeit Clash on Saturday 22nd Dec.Another event that looks set to be popular is an all day bandfest on the 9th December, which will offer an open stage toany bands or musicians who fancy performing. You can even seeme taking to the streets and asking peoplewhat their favourite bar or restaurant is. It’s awork in progress as we are all learning, but weare having great fun with it too. So far thefeedback has been great, and if you do workin a bar it is a great way of catching up onwho's who and all the latest drinks news.Happy viewing.

Killer HeelsAnyone that knows me can vouch for the factthat I have a ridiculous amount of shoes...I'mslightly addicted. I recently bought one of myfavourite pair of heels yet from boohoo.comand from the moment I opened the box I wasin love. However, I know the meaning of killerheels after wearing them out one Friday night. They may look gorgeous but by the end of theevening I was cursing them, and would havegladly swapped them for a pair ofunfashionable flats. No pain, no gain, as theysay, but maybe next time I will pack a flat pairof pumps for the walk home. Ouch!

Buzz for the BrasserieWho says you need to wait til payday for abusy night out? I was out mid month inGlasgow's West End and it was absolutelyheaving. I started off at the new prosecco barin Paperinos after promising owner Stefano I

would check it out. It is agreat wee spot and was sobusy we had to wait forseats. I then moved on toone of my favourite bars,Booly Mardys, beforeheading to The Brasserie at

The Oran Mor. The atmosphere was fantasticand the bar was packed. I still managed tohave a dance off, despite how tight the spacewas. The guy who grabbed me up to dancewas clearly a bit of a jiver back in the day, andhad me swinging about all over the place. Notgreat for the killer heels I have alreadymentioned, but great fun. I would recommendthis late night hangout to anyone looking forgreat service and a fun night out. It is onlyopen Friday and Saturdays though so makesure you check it out next time you're in town.

Cut above the restMy boss (Auntie Sue) keeps raving about ahair salon called Christopher Bond atAnniesland Cross. It’s run by the charismaticKaren, and her obliging team. And it is openon a Sunday, in fact it is open 7-days a week, which for her hectic lifestyle is perfect. So I’mgoing to book myself in for a haircut soonbecause it is very reasonably priced too.

Rock N' PoleI was asked to sing recently in the Buff clubfor a rock event to promote local Pole dancingacademy, Twirl n' Tone. I was singing not poledancing ...in case you wondered! But thenight really opened my eyes to the skill of poledancing and hats off to the performers, itlooked absolutely exhausting. There is nodenying that this is a great workout..For allclass information log ontowww.twirlntonepoledance.co.uk/classes.
