Repeat Confessions of Abortion Sin: An Important
Issue for the Coming Jubilee Year of Mercy
By Kevin Burke
The comments by Pope Francis on abortion, the sacrament of reconciliation
and the Jubilee year of Mercy have caused quite a stir. Most Catholics
were not aware of the automatic excommunication penalty associated with
abortion. Those who have already confessed the sin of abortion wondered if
their sacramental experience was valid. At the close of this article, I will
include a clear and reassuring response from Fr Frank Pavone that briefly
addresses these concerns.
But I want to use this opportunity to broaden our discussion to include a
very common and distressing phenomena associated with abortion and the
Sacrament of Reconciliation. I hope this may be helpful for Clergy
ministering to those with abortion loss in this coming Jubilee Year of
Mercy.
The Common Experience of Repeat Confession after Abortion
Dr Theresa Burke of Rachel’s Vineyard has noted for years in her
international post abortion outreach, that it is common for women (without
the benefit of a healing program) to confess their sin of abortion multiple
times. There is a difficulty embracing the grace and forgiveness of the
sacrament. Women and men may still struggle after confession with guilt,
depression and anxiety. They may still be troubled by an inability to
forgive themselves and trust that God really forgives them.

What’s going on here?
Abortion is a complicated experience of grief and loss. Along with the
abortion of the child, the natural expression of the feelings of grief and
mourning and any public expression of the loss of their child are also, in a
sense, aborted. The normal social support and religious rituals that help us
negotiate the experience of grief and loss are not present after abortion.
Women and men usually want to get as far away from the memories and
feelings about their abortion event as soon as possible. This is reinforced by
friends and family who tell them it was for the best and you just need to
move on. Maybe they do “move on” and try to pick up and carry on with
their lives. But they remain spiritually and emotionally wounded. At the
heart of this wound is the reality that somewhere in the recesses of their
heart and soul (even though often aggressively repressed and denied), there
is a deep hunger to acknowledge, love and care for this child.
In addition, the abortion experience is often one of great conflict. There can
be some intense feelings of anger, betrayal, bitterness and hatred of self and
others for being put in the position of making this desperate decision.
Returning to the sacrament of reconciliation and the phenomena of repeat
confession, a few points to consider:
Because of the complicated and intense feelings around the abortion event,
there is a need for safe way to process those feelings in a supportive faith
filled environment developed for those with abortion loss, such as a
Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat. Without this opportunity to empty the heart of
this toxic pain, there is difficulty for the wounded person to embrace the
forgiveness and grace of the sacrament. Penitents remain forgiven and
reconciled with the Church and the Lord after confession…but they may
still struggle with other post abortion symptoms and accepting this
forgiveness. The healing process allows mothers and fathers, as Dr Burke
says, to empty the heart of their abortion pain and make room for the grace
of the sacrament.
Dr Burke also teaches that this repeat confession, without the experience of
an abortion healing program, can be understood as a parent’s desperate
attempt to remain connected to their unborn child. They are crying out for
the need for a healing process where they can safely access their painful
experience, and have a loving encounter with the child lost to abortion.
The Importance of the Healing Process
The Rachel’s Vineyard program features grief work in a group setting, with
the loving support of the retreat team and other participants, and within that
process an opportunity to receive the sacraments of Eucharist and
Reconciliation. The weekend program acts to cleanse the heart damaged by
abortion. Now a mother or father is free to welcome their unborn child into
their lives with love. They can develop a spiritual relationship with their
child, and embrace the sure hope of being with them in eternity, God
willing.
There is now no further need to continue to confess their sin of abortion.
May this Jubilee Year of Mercy call many wounded souls to embrace the
mercy and forgiveness of Christ and His Church and to consider attending
an abortion recovery program.
From Fr Frank Pavone:
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
The recent news about the Pope giving extra authority to priests to absolve
the sin of abortion is good news, but is also causing some confusion. I will
be commenting more about this in the weeks ahead, but initially it is
important to understand a couple of things.
Some Catholics have wondered whether they were properly absolved in the
past. Yes, you were. There is no need at all to worry about the past. Sins
that have been confessed and absolved are absolved, as is any penalty that
may have been incurred.
Keep in mind that many bishops had already given to their priests the full
authorization to absolve both the sin and the penalty. What is being said
today by the Pope is that all the priests who had not been given that
authorization will now be given it. But if they didn’t have it before, then
they would have known that and would have told the penitent that they
had to come back at a later time.
The bottom line is simple: do not worry. This is all about more mercy and
peace, not less.

CNN’s Don Lemon asked Whoopi Goldberg to
weigh in on Pope Francis’ visit to the United States
and the Catholic Church’s teaching on abortion.
Goldberg, a self-described “humanist,” said, “This is the first time since
probably John XXIII that I have been reinterested and reinvigorated,
because this guy, you know, he read the book. He gets it.”
“This guy,” to the co-host of The View, is Pope Francis, and “the book,” is
The Bible.
“So if he says, listen, I don’t think you need to be obsessed with gay
people,” she continues, “I don’t think that’s what we need to be thinking
about. I think we need to be thinking about how do we make our church
better? How do we make our church more inclusive?”
According to Goldberg, Pope Francis said, “You know, quit hurting
women’s feelings about having gotten an abortion. I don’t want women to
get abortions but I understand why they do.”
Lemon further tested Goldberg’s theological knowledge of the Church’s
position on abortion.
“You said, there is nothing in The Bible about abortion,” he said.
“Someone would challenge you and say, ‘What about thou shall not kill?’”
“Well, if that’s the tactic we are going to take, we have to be pissed at every
war and all the things we do,” Goldberg responded.
“Now, no one goes into getting an abortion like it is a party,” she
continued. “You know what I mean? This is a hard decision for 97% of the
women in the world to make. So you shouldn’t be beating them up, because
they have had to make this terrible decision. It’s not your business that they
had to make the decision.”
Like many who are more often bashing the media image of the Catholic
Church while overlooking its actual teachings, Goldberg fails to separate
the Church’s condemnation of the act of abortion – the taking of a human
life – from the Church’s compassion for the woman in distress.
Interestingly, Lauren Duca, writing at the Huffington Post in July, asserted
that Goldberg “has devolved into a human factory of the absurd."
“Sitting on her daytime throne at The View,” Duca adds, “she churns out
illogical and offensive comments with the force and regularity of one of
those ball machines for people who don’t have a friend to play tennis with.”
Father Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, perhaps more
charitably, observes to Breitbart News the lack of logic in Goldberg’s
thought process of proclaiming Pope Francis as the Church’s leader who
finally “gets it.”
“By implication, Goldberg contrasts Pope Francis to Pope John Paul II -
though she should not forget that Pope Francis canonized him,” he says. “It
was Pope John Paul II who wrote to women who have had abortions.”
Pavone quotes Saint Pope John Paul II:
I would now like to say a special word to women who have had an
abortion. The Church is aware of the many factors which may have
influenced your decision, and she does not doubt that in many cases it was
a painful and even shattering decision. The wound in your heart may not
yet have healed. Certainly what happened was and remains terribly wrong.
But do not give in to discouragement and do not lose hope. Try rather to
understand what happened and face it honestly. If you have not already
done so, give yourselves over with humility and trust to repentance. The
Father of mercies is ready to give you his forgiveness and his peace in the
Sacrament of Reconciliation. To the same Father and to his mercy you can
with sure hope entrust your child. With the friendly and expert help and
advice of other people, and as a result of your own painful experience, you
can be among the most eloquent defenders of everyone’s right to life.
Through your commitment to life, whether by accepting the birth of other
children or by welcoming and caring for those most in need of someone to
be close to them, you will become promoters of a new way of looking at
human life(The Gospel of Life, #99).
“These words not only convey the eagerness of the Church to forgive, but
also the understanding of the difficult and painful circumstances that lead to
an abortion,” Pavone continues. “That understanding is not something new
that Pope Francis brings to the Church for the first time, and Pope Francis
would be the first to say so.”
Pavone notes that women who have undergone an abortion experience pain
not just from the circumstances leading up to the abortion, but also from the
abortion itself.
“Those who advocate listening to and trying to understand these women
need to listen to them when they tell of the pain and devastation abortion
brings,” he urges.
The pastoral director of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, Pavone
observes that through this international program, both women who have
had abortions and other family members can say, “I Regret My Abortion.”
“They do not say that because the Church is hurting them, but because
abortion is hurting them,” he continues. “Many of them, in fact, found the
faith and the Church only after they got tired of the pain of the abortion.”
Pavone’s leadership in the Catholic Church’s longstanding ministry to
women who have had abortions is also evident in Rachel’s Vineyard, the
world’s largest ministry for healing after abortion.
“Since the mid 1990’s, this ministry has brought countless women, men,
and families into a compassionate, confidential environment where they
could process their experience of abortion and bring the wounds to a
merciful Jesus, with the power of his Word and sacraments,” Pavone
explains. “Rachel’s Vineyard is officially sponsored by Catholic Dioceses
around the world, as are multiple other healing programs.”
“The Church doesn’t beat up on women who have had abortions,” Pavone
concludes. “That’s just an impression some have when they watch Whoopi
Goldberg on TV.”
“When everything falls apart, only one thing sustains our hope:
God loves us, he loves everyone!”
~ Pope Francis
A Message of Peace –a Personal Pilgrimage of
Mercy By Theresa Burke, Ph.D.
In April 2016 there is a pilgrimage being offered in Rome, Assisi and
Medugorje for alumni and leaders in Rachel’s Vineyard. But for me, it will
be a very special kind of pilgrimage – to retrace some steps of faith I took
as a young adult. A journey to give thanks to Mary for giving birth to our
Savior – and sharing gratitude to Jesus for his mercy and forgiveness
lavished upon Rachel’s Vineyard over the past 30 years.
In 1982, I was working in Switzerland as a ski Instructor. Once the snow
melted and our physical extravaganza on the slopes were over, my sister
Katie and I decided to board a train and search for some spiritual
adventures! Our vagabond travel took us to many shrines and Marian
Apparition sites throughout Europe. My goal was to write about my travels
and learn more about my faith. When we heard our parents were planning
a trip to Rome and wanted to meet up with us there, Katie and I decided to
hitchhike our way out of the mountains of Portugal and Spain and find the
eternal city … and by the way, all roads don’t lead to Rome!
To make a long story short, we ended up hearing about apparitions of Our
Lady in Medugorje. We did not hesitate to find a way to obtain a visa in
Rome then figured out a way to get there. but it was not easy. It was
obvious God wanted us there despite the obstacles! We ended up being the
first American Pilgrims to go to Yugoslavia to document the unfolding,
dramatic story.
Many people don’t know this, but it was in Lourdes, France where I had a
significant conversion experience and in Medugorje that I offered my fiat to
God. I remember praying to the Lord in the mountains of the small
Croatian village saying: “I am jack of all trades, and master of none – but
if you need anything from me in this world Jesus and Mary, I want to do it
for you!” I was 22 years old.
Each night we were invited into the apparition room to film the visionaries
so we could create a documentary to share the “messages of peace” for the
world. At the time, the pastor was in jail and communist helicopters kept a
close surveillance on the village. We managed to smuggle our video
equipment and priceless footage out of the country by performing blue
grass music for the border guards with my banjo and Katie’s guitar – a
miraculous diversion!
Our video documentary was duplicated and spread to tens of thousands of
people and translated into many languages, and my articles on Medugorje
hit the National News Wire and launched my writing career. When my
father died, the Franciscans in Medugorje sent several priests to
concelebrate his funeral mass because he was considered by them “The
Father of Medugorje” in the United States. He was also a bit of a record
keeping historian and well regarded for his prudence and gifts of
discernment. Many writers, priests and theologians came to our home and
I was privy to countless hours of conversation about miracles and the faith.
My strong faith truly grew out of Marian devotion, the rosary, and the
incredible faith and love of my parents and also that of my grandparents
who escaped religious persecution in Slovakia and Poland.
Little did I know how God would take me up on my sincere and humble
offer! In 25 years, Rachel’s Vineyard has spread to over 70 countries and
is run in over 22 languages! We see these miraculous programs of healing
as some of the fruits of Medugorje and the desire to serve and be a light in
the darkness that allows God to do something wonderful with our lives.
My sister Katie D’Annunzio still enjoys/tolerates adventures with me. In
the early days she helped baby sit when Kevin and I traveled and she works
with Rachel’s Vineyard full time now. Katie is a rock that has never
stopped helping through all the challenges and oppositions we have faced
trying to grow a ministry of mercy! Katie D’Annunzio will be joining us
and we hope you will too!

bars.
You have to let go at some point in order to move forward.”

Message from Pastoral Director
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
We are all still processing the wonderful visit of Pope Francis to the United
States. The original purpose and main event of his visit was the World
Meeting of Families, a Vatican-sponsored event held every three years in a
different country and consisting of a conference of several days which
explores themes of family and life, and then culminating with a weekend
visit from the Holy Father.
Our ministries of Rachel's Vineyard, Silent No More, and Priests for Life
had an integral role in the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia. On
Wednesday night, September 23, we conducted the international Pro-life
Symposium, which filled the Grand Ballroom of the Convention Center
with approximately 1500 pro-life activists, and which focused primarily on
the theme of healing the family from the wounds of abortion.
This fit in nicely with the World Meeting theme this year: Love is our
Mission: The Family Fully Alive. Obviously, the family cannot be fully
alive unless all its children are protected and unless the wounds of abortion
are healed.
Rachel's Vineyard serves people in many ways, including strengthening,
healing and saving family life, of which nothing is more destructive than
abortion. May the work of this Vineyard continue to grow and serve
countless people around the world!
Sincerely,
Fr. Frank Pavone

Please pray for Lairen Vogan, Executive Assistant at Rachel’s Vineyard
and her husband, Ian, as they are expecting their first child in March 2016.
They are overjoyed and would appreciate your prayers for a healthy
delivery and baby.
Please join us in praying for, Celia Ryan. She has been diagnosed with
advanced lung cancer which has metastasized to her brain. Celia has served
as a therapist and team member on Rachel’s Vineyard teams in many
locations including Washington, DC. She has also taught at many of
Leadership conferences and is a beloved friend to many. Lord, please hold
Celia in your arms and grant her a miracle of healing in whatever she needs
during this difficult journey. If you would like to reach out to Celia you can

Please pray for, Joan Bartolomei, member of the Trenton, NJ Rachel’s
Vineyard Team. In April she was diagnosed with a recurrence of breast
cancer in her left breast. Initially a mastectomy was scheduled. A pre op
MRI revealed a second mass in her right breast and biopsy confirmed
cancer. This led to a PET scan which showed right lung involvement, also
confirmed by biopsy. She is also scheduled for a couple more tests to
determine if there is cancer elsewhere. The oncologist has enough info to
begin a course of hormone therapy treatment shown to be effective with
this type of cancer in post menopausal women. She will be monitored
closely with meds altered as needed. Chemo is likely in the future when
cancer outsmarts the medications, but that could be several months or a few
years away. Joan and her husband Tom feel blessed to have a wall of love
and prayer. She is in good hands - God's and his instruments at Penn
Medicine. Please keep Joan and her family in your prayers.
Please pray for Janet Kormish, who left this world on September 16, 2015
after a diagnosis of liver cancer. We ask you to remember her family in
your prayers: Her 5 children and 13 grandchildren, and 2 great
grandchildren, that they be comforted and consol soled as they grieve her
loss. Janet bought Rachel’s Vineyard Ministries and Grief to Grace
Ministries to Kelowna, British Columbia. She was an extraordinary leader,
mentor and friend to many in our ministry and had a profound trust and
love of Jesus that she shared so intimately with all those who knew her.
She will be deeply missed. Next month we will have a special article about
her in Vine and Branches written by Theresa Burke, who traveled to see her
and spend time with her the week she died as she prepared to meet her
beloved Lord and all the children she helped reunite with their mommies
and daddies.
