Overland Storage REO SERIES™

PrefaceThis document assumes that you have already set up and configured your REO. For more information, see the Setup Guide that came with your appliance.

This document describes how to configure Symantec Backup Exec 9.1 and 10.x quickly to work with the REO virtual tape-library (VTL) in which Backup Exec is installed. This document assumes that Backup Exec has been installed and configured. This document describes procedures to back up files to a single REO VTL.

Important: Important: To use Backup Exec with a REO VTL, you need to use a Fibre Channel (FC) host bus adapter (HBA) or an Internet SCSI (iSCSI) software network-interface card (NIC), such as the Adaptec 7211C or the QLogic QLA4010C.

The following diagram depicts the network configuration, including servers and other equipment, used to create this document.

5 Change the Target Name for the changer and each drive, if desired.

Important: Overland strongly recommends that you change the MAC address portion of the Target Name for each device to the server name to which the VTL will be connected.

6 Click Commit.

7 To assign initiators to this VTL, click Add Initiator.

In the following example, Overland uses an FC initiator to connect to the new VTL.

Change MAC address to name of server.

Configuring Backup Exec on the Backup ServersComplete the following steps on the media server that will access the REO VTL.

1 Launch the Windows Computer Management program, and click Device Manager.

Because the VTL was connected to the backup server via an FC initiator in this example, the library changer and tape drives should be displayed on this screen. In addition to the REO VTL, there is also an Overland NEO 2000 Library attached to the backup server via an FC interface.

If the REO VTL is connected via an iSCSI adapter, you need to log on the devices via the appropriate iSCSI management program before they appear in the Device Manager.

2 Review the Properties of the NEO Library changer and drive, and note the Location information.

You will need this information in a later step.

4 Launch the Registry Editor, open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > HARDWARE > DEVICEMAP > Scsi key, and expand each SCSI port until you find the ports that match up with the REO and the NEO Fibre Channel FCO.

5 Make sure that the Bus, Target ID, and LUN ID information match the Location information noted in step 2 and step 3.

6 To ensure that Backup Exec recognizes the new devices, restart the Backup Exec services.

7 Restart the backup server to force Backup Exec to recognize the library.

Until you restart the server, the virtual tape-drives will appear in the Devices tab of the Backup Exec management program, but the VTL will not.

8 As a best practice, rename the VTL and tape drives so that they are easily distinguished from the NEO Library.

Note that in SSO mode, the renamed libraries are instantly displayed on both servers.

9 Review the SCSI Information tab on the Properties of the VTL library and drives, and make sure that they are the same values at the Registry and Device Manager settings noted earlier.
