Left-hander Anthony Banda gets the nod for Reno, opposite Tacoma righty Cody Martin. Last Night’s Game: A ninth-inning rally wasn’t meant to be as the Aces saw their chances at the 2016 Pacific Northern Division title come to an end with a 3-1 loss to the Sacramento River Cats on Thursday night at Raley Field. Doomed with an elimination number of one entering play, a three-run eighth inning proved too much for the Aces to overcome in the loss, which clinched the Pacific Northern Division crown for Tacoma. Locked in a 0-0 game, Sacramento tallied three runs in the eighth inning against Andrew Chafin, following the removal of Matt Buschmann, who worked seven stellar frames in his final start of the season. The River Cats used a leadoff single, sacrifice bunt and intentional walk to set up a run-scoring single by Myles Schroder. In the following at-bat, Ryan Lollis hit a grounder to Aces second base- man Ildemaro Vargas (@ildemaro_tigre), but his throw to the plate was late of Ali Castillo’s slide, making it 2-0. Miguel Olivo then reached on an infield single to Chafin who skipped his throw past first base, allowing Lollis to trot home from third. With three outs at their disposal, the Aces nearly pulled off an improbable comeback. Sacramento’s Jake Dunning picked up a strikeout to begin the ninth, but a single by Peter O’Brien and walk to Jack Reinheimer brought the tying run to the plate. Carlos Rivero promptly lined a single into right-center, pulling the Aces back within two runs. Todd Glaesmann then grounded a pinch-hit infield single to second to load the bases, forcing a pitching change. Vin Mazzaro was summoned from the River Cats’ bullpen for his first save opportunity of the season, inheriting Dunning’s bases-loaded jam. The veteran right-hander struck out Ed Lucas on three pitches before inducing a game-ending groundout by Vargas to first base, sealing the series win for Sacramento while handing Reno its fate. Clayton Blackburn matched Buschmann pitch-for-pitch with eight shutout innings in the victory. Chafin took the loss after allowing three runs – two earned – on three hits and one walk in the eighth inning. O’Brien and Dan Rohlfing both tallied two hits, the latter extending his career-high hitting streak to 11 games in the process. Cody Martin: 26-year-old Cody Martin makes his 25th appearance (20th start) for Tacoma tonight, including his fourth this season against the Aces. He is 2-0 with a 1.77 ERA (4 ER/20.1 IP) with 22 strikeouts in four career starts against the Aces. On Sunday, he earned the win in Tacoma’s 4-3 victory at Greater Nevada Field, allowing one earned run on three hits over 5.1 innings with three walks and seven strikeouts. On June 10, he took a no-decision in Tacoma’s 2-0 win at Cheney Stadium, striking out four and allowing four hits over four scoreless innings. On July 6 at Reno this year, he gave up one earned run on four hits over five frames. Last year, he allowed three runs (two earned) over six innings to earn the win for Nashville on August 25 at Greater Nevada Field. The right-hander is 10-7 in 24 games (19 starts) this season for the Rainiers, posting a 3.82 ERA (46 ER/108.1 IP) and 106 strikeouts. He has made seven appearances (two starts) for Seattle, going 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA (10 ER/20.0 IP) with 12 strikeouts. In 142 career Minor League games (103 starts), Martin is 41-36 with a 3.34 ERA (236 ER/636.0 IP) and 648 strikeouts. The Mariners claimed him off waivers from Oakland on October 19, 2015. He was selected by Atlanta in the seventh round of the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Gonzaga University. They Put Up a Good Fight: With their loss to Sacramento last night, the Aces were eliminated from playoff contention. Tacoma clinched the Pacific Northern Division title, punching the fourth and final ticket to the Pacific Coast League postseason. Offensive Slump: The Aces avoided a shutout with a run in the ninth inning last night. In losing three of the four games in Sacramento, Reno totaled just 10 runs (2.5 rpg). During the previous series, a five-game set against Tacoma at Greater Nevada Field, the Aces scored 47 runs (9.4 rpg). Winning in Washington: The Aces won three of four games during their first trip to Tacoma back in June. Reno has posted a losing record at Cheney Stadium just once in franchise history, dropping five of eight games in 2012. Buschmann’s Brilliance: Matt Buschmann recorded his first scoreless outing of the season as he allowed five hits over seven shutout innings with no walks and four strikeouts on Thursday at Sacramento. The veteran right-hander now has worked at least seven frames in six starts this year, posting a 1.84 ERA (9 ER/44.0 IP) and a 4.83 strikeout-to-walk ratio (29 K/6 BB) in those outings. Dan the Man: Aces catcher Dan Rohlfing went 2-for-3 with an RBI on Thursday night, extending his career-high hit streak to 11 games dating back to August 14. During the stretch, he’s batting .463 (19-for-41) with two home runs, three doubles, 11 RBI and eight runs scored. Ernie Young Has Company: Kyle Jensen’s three-run shot in the first inning last Friday night gave him 30 homers for the season, matching Ernie Young’s total of 30 -- a D-backs’ Triple-A record -- set in 1999 with the Tucson Sidewinders. Jensen already owns sole possession of the D-backs Triple-A RBI record as well, with his 120 easily outpacing Josh Whitesell’s 110 set in 2008 with Tucson. PCL Manager of the Year: Nashville skipper Steve Scarsone was announced as the PCL Manager of the Year earlier today. He is in his fourth season with Oakland’s Triple-A affiliate, and his eighth year in the A’s system. The Sounds will record the franchise’s second-most wins in their 19-year PCL history, surpassed only by the 89 victories amassed in 2007, when Frank Kremblas was named PCL Manager of the Year. Nashville has seen 178 transactions on the year, with 60 different players appearing on the team’s roster. PCL Most Valuable Player: El Paso outfielder Hunter Renfroe was named the PCL MVP yesterday, the fourth San Diego Padres’ farmhand to take home the award and first since Sandy Alomar Jr. did so in 1989 with the Las Vegas Stars. The slugger is currently batting .306 with 29 homers and 104 RBI, to go along with 34 doubles, 5 triples, 94 runs scored, 22 walks, a .337 OBP and .896 OPS. Reno’s Kyle Jensen finished as the runner-up, despite being the fourth player in the PCL since 1993 to post 120-plus RBI in a single season. PCL Pitcher of the Year: Fresno’s Brady Rodgers was voted as the PCL’s Pitcher of the Year on Wednesday. Through 22 starts, he went 12-4 with a 2.86 ERA over 132.0 innings, including 116 strikeouts against 23 walks. From May 21-August 10 spanning 12 starts, he won 11 consecutive decisions. PCL Rookie of the Year: El Paso’s Carlos Asuaje was named the PCL Rookie of the Year on Tuesday. The second base- man is batting .325 (169-for-520) with 31 doubles, 11 triples, seven homers, 66 RBI and 95 runs scored in 130 games. All-PCL Team Announced: Kyle Jensen was selected as the first baseman to the All-PCL Team, announced by the league on Monday. He owns the home run, RBI and total bases single-season records for Reno while becoming the 12th player in franchise history to be named to the All-PCL Team. STREAKS This Date in Aces History The Aces are 5-1 all-time in games played on September 2.
