No 5/2019 Term 1, Week 10 Thursday 4 April 2019 News from the Principal This is our last newsletter for term 1. How quickly the weeks have passed! My sincere thank you to staff for their outstanding commitment and hard work to ensure the best teaching and learning for every student. Parents and caregivers who attended recent discussions have the latest information about their child’s progress and achievement, and the next steps in their learning. At the end of term 2, you will receive a written report and your child’s Learning Journal to formally report progress, achievements and next steps, a critical part of learning. Parents/caregivers are encouraged to contact the teacher at any time to discuss any aspect of their child’s education; we highly value strong and supportive relationships built and maintained between school and home. I wish all staff, families and students a wonderful holiday and look forward to a great start to term 2. NAPLaN NAPLaN testing for year 3, 5 and 7 students will occur early next term. The testing is online, except year 3 Writing which will be paper and pencil. Students engage very well in online activities and I’m sure they will do well in their tests. I will send more information home at the start of week 1 next term. Testing dates are Tuesday 14/5, Wednesday 15/5, Friday 17/5 and Monday 20/5. We do not want students to feel anxious about the testing, nor do we want parents worrying! The testing is part of the usual assessment cycle, it’s of their basic skills, they are well prepared and should feel confident and have a growth mindset about the tests. During the holidays, there is no need for anyone to worry! School Uniforms Please consider donating uniform items you no longer need. Many families benefit from your kind donations. School Improvement Plan Renmark Primary School has three key improvement areas: 1. Increase Reception – Year 2 student achievement in Reading, focussing on decoding (letter sounds and blends to make words). Decodable readers, THRASS charts, oral language skill development and writing are intertwined. 2. Increase Year 5 student achievement in Reading (comprehending). Students are explicitly taught strategies to make meaning of a wide range of texts; written, oral, visual, fiction, non-fiction. Being able to connect the text to what they already know, predict, summarise, clarify through questioning and visualise are the key strategies for our work. 3. Decrease % year 3-5 low progress students and increase % upper progress students in NAPLaN Numeracy. Number sense and the application of this knowledge and skills in problem solving are our priorities. Parents and caregivers can support their children to develop in these areas in their day to day life; counting, predicting what will happen next, telling the time, using a calendar, discussing a book they’ve read – let the children do the talking! Our students are amazing. The term 1 learning is amazing and a credit to staff, students and home support. Thank you. NEXT FRIDAY 12 April EARLY DISMISSAL at 2:30pm Term 2 resumes on Monday 29 April. Breakfast Club

Every Thursday we run Breakfast club in the kitchen from

8.15-8.45am. We would like to take this opportunity to say

“Thank you!” to the Paringa Bakery and Renmark Baker’s Delight for their continuing support with

    this program.

    Only One You

As part of our Harmony Week and National Day of Action

against Bullying celebrations, we all read the story “Only

One You.” The theme of the book emphasises that there's

only one you in this great big world, so let’s make it a better

place. The illustrations in this book are uniquely painted

"rockfish," set against blue seas. This year we received a

$500 grant from the Department. We purchased acrylic

paint pens, rocks and varnish so that all children had the

opportunity to decorate their own rock. Stay tuned as we are

still deciding where these will be used in our garden!

    Room 9 stay Cyber-Smart!

Room 9 students have been learning about the responsible use

of technology. Part of their assessment task was to show their

skills and knowledge in what to do when faced with an online

situation that catches them off-guard. The goal of the

presentation was to teach others the consequences of making

    poor decisions online.

    Lego League

On Tuesday during lunch play, Mr Stewart-Peters and Ms

Smith run Lego league! The aim of Lego league is to challenge

children to think like scientists and engineers. Some of this

term’s challenges have included building a boat that floats and

building a bedroom with opening doors.

If anyone has any Lego at home that they would like

to donate to the school, please let Ms Smith know!

    Holiday Lego League Challenges

Start your school holiday fun with Lego building challenges. Use your collection of Lego pieces to come up with your own

    versions of the ideas below!

The goal is to have kids of all ages learn through play, so grab your bricks and kick off the holidays with the Lego building

    challenge.
