Ontario PC caucus calls for public inquiry on e-HealthRenfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yaka-

buski announced Friday that the Ontario PC Caucus plans to introduce the eHealth Ontario Spending Accountability Act 2009 in the Ontario legislature this week.

The news release said Ontario’s Auditor General testifi ed before a legislative committee that he was unable to probe many of the most important ques-tions in the eHealth scandal, including the names and Liberal affi liations of key eHealth fi gures.

The Conservative news release says a public inquiry is the only way for taxpayers to learn who got rich off their money, how they are connected to government, and who ordered a government of-fi cial to block the auditor’s investigation.

“Every single MPP owes it to their constituents to stand up and vote on this bill,” said Yakabuski. “Do they support the public’s right to know the truth or do they support a continued coverup?”

Yakabuski also described the bill as being “for the people of Ontario.” He said the PC caucus rec-ognizes the money in question under the Ontario Spending Accountability Act is not McGuinty’s,

behaviour, how management board of cabinet played a role in waiving rules for untendered con-tracts, plus obstruction of the Auditor General’s offi ce and its lack of mandate and resources to fully examine eHealth.

New committee to focus on drawing more tourists to RenfrewSTEVE NEWMAN

[email protected] December, Renfrew may have a

new tourism committee in place that has an eye on drawing more visitors to town.

Mayor Sandi Heins will finalize membership of the committee, which will include members of council, the Renfrew Industrial Commission, and the local Chamber of Commerce and perhaps other bodies.

“This is a Town of Renfrew com-

mittee, we’re just facilitating,” said industrial commission general man-ager Norm Anderson.

In recommending the creation of the new committee, Anderson told town council’s Nov. 17 briefing session that the tourism sector appears poised for improvement.

Seeing that Renfrew is the area’s commercial hub, with several banks and a sizeable retail sector, Anderson said it makes sense to focus on draw-ing people to the area.

Following the meeting, he admit-ted the town “definitely needs some-thing to attract (more) people, and we haven’t got that yet.”

Within Renfrew County, Anderson said recent economic figures show the manufacturing sector generated $419 million in annual sales, compared to $933 million in the retail sector and $111 million in the tourism sector − with the help of more than one mil-lion annual visitors.

“Manufacturing is still in limbo. We’re seeing action, but it’s pretty quiet,” said Anderson. As for the retail sector, he said Renfrew has just undergone its recent and successful downtown retail initiative program.

He said surveys show the downtown is pretty affluent, and predicts the downtown core will remain so.

That leaves room to look more close-ly at the tourism sector, concludes Anderson.

“We feel tourism is not marketed to the extent it could be in Renfrew,” he said, while acknowledging marketing costs money.

The goal isn’t necessarily to attract just tourists, either, said council mem-bers.

“Get them to buy a house, move in and pay taxes,” said Coun. Kate Windle enthusiastically.

“There’s the initial visit and we sell them from there.”

“If we can get people to Renfrew, the town sells itself,” concurred Ron Brazeau, a director with the indus-trial commission.

At the same time, Brazeau suggest-ed a three- to five-year plan would be helpful, to help ensure committee projects are well planned and become something that’s here to stay.

“I’m so glad to hear this,” said Reeve Audrey Green about the new commit-tee.

Coun. Tom Anderson concurred: “I’m very happy to see this coming forward. It’s been on the backburner for a few years.”

Part of the process of drawing more tourists to the area, says Anderson, is about Renfrew citizens being ambas-

News

sadors of their own town. Coun. Windle agreed and pointed out the num-

ber-one message at last year’s Association of Municipalities of Ontario annual conference was “to let people know where you are and what you’re about.”

Norm Anderson talks to Renfrew council about the town’s soon-to-be-formed tourism committee.

EDITORIAL

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

An unfortunate oxymoron ... yes or no?To the editor:

The dictionary defi nes an oxymoron, not as an ox with a very serious mental condition, but as when two words or phrases of opposite meaning are set together. For example, a democratic dictatorship or falsely true or a holy war.

Question? Is it fair to say that when push comes to shove, that when speaking about hyphenated Canadians, as in Swedish-Canadians, German-Canadians or French-Cana-dians (and the list is almost endless) we are really fl irting with an oxymoron of the fi rst degree.

I can almost hear some of you saying, “Anything but, it is at the heart of the Canadian mosaic. There is so much we can learn from our various backgrounds, it is what makes us Canadians.” Then again, there may be those who say, you may have a point, but there is one exception, namely French-Canadians, it is in our Constitution. Incidentally, when is the last time you heard someone referred to as an Irish, Welsh or Scottish Canadian? And yet, when the topic comes up, one hears somewhat regularly references to hy-phenated Canadians, be they European based, or more re-cently, Asian based.

Several years ago for a time I was regularly involved in a personal way with what we have come to know as Citizen-ship Court. It was an event that involved new immigrants from a variety of countries offi cially becoming citizens of Canada, an event that included one swearing allegiance to Canada as its basic values. Personally speaking, each in-volvement increased my sense of gratitude for being a citi-zen of our great country.

However, it also jogged my memory in a very specifi c way. It took me back in time when my own Mother and Fa-ther stood before a judge and swore allegience to Canada,

and for what it stood. I was only an infant at that time, but as I grew in years I never once heard my Mom or Dad refer to themselves as Danish-Canadians. On the contrary, they referred to themselves as Canadians of Danish descent.

One incident stands out in my memory. I am in my teens, listening to a discussion – an argument between my Dad and another Danish immigrant who disputed my Dad’s def-inition. “Are you ashamed of being a Dane?” he countered. My Dad’s response went something like this. “No, I am in no way ashamed of my Danish heritage, not at all, but the day I swore allegiance to the Canadian fl ag was the day I became a Canadian, and I pledged myself that any Danish value that may run counter to Canadian values would have to be dropped – period.’’

That was one day this rebel of a teenager was not ashamed of his Dad.

Why am I sharing this with you? Because today, some 65 years since that incident I am more and more convinced that the conviction voiced by my father ought to be the un-derstood resolve of every female and male who becomes a Canadian citizen. If they cannot in all honesty so do, then they should, in all honesty and honour, return to their country of origin.

If such were the case we would be spared the sad specta-cles that occur from time to time when the values of anoth-er country that are contrary to what we’ve held since 1867 are promoted as valid. I refer to values by such incidents as ‘honour killings’, which by the values that this immigrant lad was brought up with are anything but honourable. In fact, the term ‘honour killing’ would defi nitely be consid-ered an oxymoron.

Harry Vibe

Pay attentionAs a motorist, it can be easy to become compla-

cent. You’re a good driver. You know the roads. You know the traffic lights. You know every yield, speed bump and pedestrian crosswalk.

But think again. After an uncustomary break in rail traffic in

recent months, Ottawa Valley Railway says it is increasing traffic levels on its main line between Chalk River and Smiths Falls.

The danger: an absence of train traffic may have dampened our regular vigilance at crossings.

“Vehicular traffic and pedestrians are required to obey all crossing warning devices and to stop, look and listen before proceeding at locations not equipped with lights and/or bells,” OVR says.

It was not the only traffic warning that filterd through our newsroom this week.

The Ontario Provincial Police is also waving a red flag that, despite our unseasonably warm autumn, winter is indeed on its way.

Renfrew County roads have already been dusted with snow and ice and police have investigat-ed numerous cases of vehicles in ditches. They remind motorists to alter their driving habits according to the weather conditions.

“Plan ahead, ensure you have significant time to arrive at your destination, carry emergency items such as a flashlight, some type of non-perishable food, a shovel, candles, a blanket and matches. Drive safely,” says the OPP.

Good advice.

Several activities in worksfor Olympic Torch Relay run

By STEVE [email protected]

A street hockey tournament, photos with Santa, an offi cial Olympic torch relay fl ag-raising, Olym-pic and Canadian fl ag waving, and spectators lin-ing the main street with Renfrew’s very own torch relay scarves.

Those are some of the activities planned when the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay passes through Ren-frew Dec. 13.

Renfrew Mayor Sandi Heins unveiled some of the town’s plans for the mid-day Sunday event at town council’s briefi ng session Monday.

Renfrew is designated as a stopping point for the relay, while offi cial Dec. 13 ceremonies will occur later that afternoon in Pembroke.

The town’s offi cial greeting of the torch bear-ers, at Low Square, will probably take less than 10 minutes, surmised Heins, who said the town’s plan is to turn the event into a few hours of enjoyable activities for individuals and families.

It is also hoped spectators will include several school-age children with posters made for the oc-casion.

SPECIAL SCARVESRenfrew’s very own torch relay scarves, each

with an embroidered inukshuk, will also be for sale shortly at the town offi ce. The cost will be $7 cash, less than the actual production cost of $7.50.

Other events are planned, but those details will be released later, said Heins.

Renfrew’s torch relay committee consists of chair Brian Bennett, Mayor Heins, Diana Wakely, Christy Genco, Ryan Lunney and Brenda Dill-abough.

The Dec. 13 leg of the relay will also travel through the Renfrew County communities of Arn-prior, Douglas, Eganville, Pikwakanagan, Golden Lake, Petawawa and Pembroke.

A special two-hour ceremony is scheduled for later in the day at the Pembroke waterfront.

Renfrew Mayor Sandi Heins displays one of Renfrew’s signature Olympic torch relay scarves. They’ll be for sale soon.

New year, new ratesEffective Jan. 1, 2010, the Ren-

frew Child Development Centre’s rates will rise.

The higher prices, along with new operating policies, are neces-sary to address the day care cen-tre’s operating defi cit, says town treasurer Keray O’Reilly.

The rates approved by the centre’s advisory committee, and soon to be approved by council, are $37 for full-day fees and $20 for after school.

The present rates are $34 and $12 respectively.

Focus mid-day Sunday, Dec. 13 to be on fun activities at Low Squareand recognizing the torch bearers, says Renfrew Mayor Sandi Heins

Do you partake in any activities that require you to be on your feet? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then Orthotics may be your solutions.Who Can Benefi t From Orthotics?Preventative Orthotic maintenance is benefi cial for everyone. In fact, 67% of Canadians suffer from foot problems and do not even know it. Further-more, approximately 30% of the population wears the wrong size or type of shoes for their feet. Proper footwear can improve your balance and alignment, as well as prevent injuries. What are Orthotics? An Orthotic is a foot sup-porting device that is custom made to specifi cally fi t your foot. A custom made Orthotic will realign the relationship between the front and rear of the foot, and between the foot and the leg. This will help to treat and prevent disorders of the foot, ankle, knee and back. The goal is to restore optimal arch height and func-tion, since it is loss of arch height that is the most common factor that is the most common factor

behind foot pain and deformity. The Orthotic is made to match the exact shape of your foot, with the rigidity calibrated to be able to hold the arch up with activity, and yet fl ex slightly for comfort and function. How will Orthotics Help? Orthotics allows the muscles, tendons and bones of the feet to function at their highest potential. They provide full contact cushioning for the foot which reduces symptoms associated with many foot related problems. Orthotics offer support and stabilization of the foot and can prevent, correct or accommodate foot deformities.Saturday, November 21st or Monday, No-vember 23rd from 9:30am to 5pm – circle these dates and times on your calendar. Wayne Rostad and Friends to bring Christmas to the Valley

Wayne Rostad, enter-tainer, singer/songwriter, storyteller and humorist is bringing his Christmas in the Valley with Wayne Rostad and Friends show to the AFAC 433 Wing in Renfrew on Saturday, Dec. 5. The show begins at 7:30 p.m.

As an entertainer, Ros-tad has become one of the most recognized voices and faces on the Canadian landscape. His award-winning CBC television show, On the Road Again, has made him a Canadian icon.

On stage, he has shared billings and rubbed shoul-ders with many of the best entertainers in the busi-ness – Johnny Cash, Ricky Skaggs, Charlie Pride, Lo-retta Lynn, the Bellamy Brothers, and Emmylou Harris – just to name a few; and opened for such greats as Waylon Jennings and Roy Orbison.

His original songs about the places he’s been and the people he’s met along the way have won the hearts of fans across the nation.

Rostad has travelled Canada from sea to sea to sea, from the Pacifi c’s Queen Charlotte Islands to the mighty Atlantic, all the

way up to Tuktoyuktuk and Fort McPherson in the high North, criss-crossing the country entertaining at concerts, festivals, and fairs.

His television show travels have given Rostad a unique understanding and perspective of Canada and its people, making him exceptional among Cana-dian entertainers. He’s been called ‘Mr. Canada’, and ‘Canada’s Storyteller’ based on his songs, stories and adventures.

And then, there is Wayne Rostad in concert. Undoubtedly, he is one of the most commanding and compelling performers anywhere.

He takes to the stage with his guitar in hand, a powerful one-man show that keeps audiences spell-bound with his songs, sto-ries, humour and passion for entertaining them. He has that very rare and spe-cial ability to make every-one feel that he is singing for them and them alone.

Rostad not only loves people, he loves humanity. He is a strong community activist who has helped raise millions of dollars for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the Ottawa Heart Institute. He

also serves as honourary chair of the Christmas Ex-change.

His work has garnered him many awards and honours. He has been in-ducted into the Ottawa Valley Country Music Hall of Fame; he is a Paul Har-ris Fellow; and a Judge Brian Stevenson Award re-cipient. He also serves as a Board member at several charitable foundations.

Recently, Rostad was awarded the Order of Canada for his strong com-mitment to the people in his own backyard and in communities across the country.

Wayne will be joined on stage by a few of his friends celebrating Christ-mas in the Valley.

This promises to be a great evening of music, stories and humour. A great way to celebrate the festive season! This is a show you won’t want to miss. For more show information visit www.waynerostad.com.

Tickets for Christmas in the Valley with Wayne Rostad and Friends are only $25, general admis-sion, and are available at Mill Music, AFAC 433 Wing, The Bear’s Den and Valley Heritage Radio.

Participating students collected a minimum of five items and brought their collected goods to school, where they were handed over to the food bank. Participating from left are Melissa Blimkie, Samantha Galbraith, Bailey Plunkett, Alicia Forgie, Nicholas Bovair, Reid Hall and Zachary Paulin. Midgets in limelight at MAC this weekend

It’s all arms under the basket as the St. Joseph’s Jaguars and Madawaska Valley Wolves fight for possession during their one-game Eastern Ontario (EOSSAA) junior girls basketball playoff for A schools at the Jaguars gym Nov. 11. The visiting Barry’s Bay team earned the right to advance on the strength of a 22-18 victory. However, the next afternoon, the Senior Jaguars travelled to Petawawa to pull out a 53-52 cliffhanger over the General Panet Panthers in a senior girls EOSSAA qualifier. The Jaguars competed in EOSSAA at Rideau High School in Elgin Wednesday. Mercury Weekender photo by PETER CLARK

CALL TO ARMS

PETER [email protected]

The Atom Wolves host Petawawa at 7:30 p.m. and the Bantam Wolves meet the Arnprior Packers at 8:30 p.m.

PETER [email protected]

There’s a six-team midget house hock-ey tournament at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre Saturday, starting at 8 a.m. Ren-frew teams are Dunbar’s Esso and the Renfrew Canadians.

In action last week, Dunbar’s blanked Petawawa 1-0 and Cobden 3-0 behind a pair of Colton Nichol shutouts. Dunbar’s also tied Pembroke 2-2 and nipped Orleans 3-2 in an exhibition contest.

Shayne Kilby-Lemay, Jarrett Laten-dresse and Justin Farrow supplied two goals, and Adam Scott, Gord Kallio and Jack Stephens singles.

The Canadians, backstopped by Col-leen Fleury, defeated Cobden 8-1.

Michael Gavin snared a hat trick while Jay Pinkham, Mitchell Ferguson, Jason Fleury, Blair Clouthier (12G, 3A) and Joel Ferguson tabbed solos.

The Bear’s Den tied 3-3 and lost 4-1 to the same Pembroke team in bantam encounters. The Renfrew squad was also nipped by Barry’s Bay 3-2.

Skylar Kluke (3), Jessey Chapieski, Calum Chalmers and Trevor Vooght were Bear’s Den goalgetters. Chloe Eady was between the pipes.

Nolan Saumure faced 38 shots but got no offensive support in Times Fiber’s 5-0 loss to Deep River.

Adam Wright and Evan Zohr scored while Braedon Vincent guarded the goal-crease in NAPA Auto Parts’ 2-2 peewee deadlock in Pembroke.

Vincent earned the shutout in NAPA’s 7-0 whitewashing of Westmeath.

Adam Wright had a hat trick and two assists, and Jacob Sweeney two goals. Kellee Bovair and Will Vincent collected singles.

Farrell’s Installation met a pair of Pembroke teams, losing 7-2 and win-ning 3-2. Justin Visinski, Ayden McLeod, Tyshawn LaFont, Daniel Hibbins and Bryley O’Shea with the game winner, were Farrell’s scorers.

Jordan Vandersleen handed goaltend-ing chores.

Barker’s Collision Centre blanked Pet-awawa 4-0 behind Carter Atkins’ shutout in atom. They also lost a 4-2 decision to Deep River in a game of shared net-minding duties with Atkins and Bryce Schaap.

Garett McDonald had three goals, Brandon Hanniman (1G, 2A), Ryan Fortin and Braedon Reinert singles.

Cole Turcotte’s hat trick and the goal-tending of Connery Campbell directed Milano Pizza past Arnprior 6-1.

John Agnew, Katie Hill and Charlie Strader (1G, 3A) shared singles.

The Kinsmen Reds topped Pembroke 5-3 and rolled past Arnprior 7-1.

Hunter Wright (1G, 2A), Cory Mackin (1G, 2A), Connor Fulton, Nicholas Wright and Ben Shields scored versus Pembroke in a win registered by McKale Van Gen-deren.

Hunter Gilchrist and Lindsay Fulton posted hat tricks in the win over Arn-prior. Braeden Mackin added a single, and Connor Fulton and Nicholas Wright two assists.

Ben Shields backstopped the triumph.

5, sparked by Simon Rose’s five-goal effort and three from Brendan Hill.

Jacob Miller earned the goaltending victory.

Mason Lynch was one second away from a shutout, but Tyler Blackburn’s sec-ond goal of the game with nine seconds to play was the difference in a 2-1 Renfrew Pizzeria triumph over Deep River.

Behind the Glass: Fun, spirited action and camaraderieANDY SKLEPOWICZ

Renfrew Curling RinkWhat a week of curling!Besides the busy regular schedule, the club also

hosted a Friendly on Thursday, and on Saturday, 10 women’s teams from eastern Ontario enjoyed Renfrew hospitality at its best.

Members of the Arnprior Curling Club joined us on Thursday morning for some fun, spirited curl-ing followed by lunch and the usual camaraderie associated with these events. Some of our new curlers took the opportunity to try this event and enjoyed it. It probably didn’t hurt that Renfrew came away with three out of four wins while still being good hosts.

Saturday, 40 women curlers enjoyed two games of curling, lunch, dinner, great prizes, a number of other fun events and especially each other’s com-pany and friendship.

But what they seemed to enjoy the most was being waited upon hand and foot by some of the gentlemen of the club and a day away from prepar-ing meals and cleaning up after. They also kept our bartender, Gus Woito, busy all day and I heard he had to turn down a number of dates by the end of the evening. Charlie Ricard and his crew once again outdid themselves with the food and Barb Westgarth and her team made sure that everyone had a great time.

The two Renfrew teams of Yvonne Sklepowicz, Jennifer Cuff, Mary-Lise Rowat and Faye Warren, and Stephanie Langlois, Helen Hayward, Theresa Mann and Cindy Buckley, represented the club well, both winning one of their two games.

The winning team from Pembroke, made up of Sandra Faught, Margaret Lomore, Leann Selle and Tanya Brennan, played well in both their games and edged out the runner-up, Katheryne Jessup’s rink from Carleton Heights, on points.

However, the big winner of the day was the San-dra Schmirler Foundation.

More than a thousand dollars was raised for neo-natal care.

Coming up this week is the friendship spiel on Saturday, Nov. 21. Dianne Burns (613-432-7294) and Marilyn Eady (613-432-7606) said there were a few spots still open, as of the writing of this column,

so give them a call. And a final reminder to all club members: the

minutes of all board meetings are posted on the bulletin board.

Raiders, Redmen to begin traditionThe Renfrew Collegiate Raiders and

Arnprior Redmen junior and senior boys basketball teams will meet in the inaugu-ral Gord E. Eady Tradition Monday, Nov. 30 at RCI’s Grant Gymnasium.

The games are the 2009-10 home open-ers for the Raiders. The Senior Raiders and Redmen lock horns at 4 p.m., while the junior teams square off at 5:30 p.m.

“Because of Gord’s unparalleled dedi-cation to boys basketball throughout his career, we have named our annual home opener games after Gord,” Senior Raid-ers coach Adam Noack said.

Three Renfrew Rush draws will be

made between the games. The gold prize include courtside tickets

for a Dec. 27 Toronto Raptors game, travel and room at the Harbour Castle and a Raptors team-signed basketball.

Green fees and carts for four at the Ren-frew Golf Club and green fees for four at Arnprior highlight the silver prize.

The bronze prize is a Sidney Crosby Pittsburgh Penguins jersey.

Tickets are $5 each and three for $10.Proceeds will go to minor and high

school basketball programs in Renfrew. Tickets are available from RCI basket-

ball players, and at the door.

DAN DUCHENEPresident Champlain 433 Wing

Support for this project continues to grow. To date we have raised $1,820.49. Thank you to Employment Networks and Yemen Electric for your kind donations.

On Remembrance Day we paused to remember all those who fought and continue to fi ght for the freedoms we so dearly love. We attended services of re-membrance, we wore our poppies, and we stood during two minutes of silence. Around noon on Remembrance Day most of us took off our poppies and went back to our regular lives.

While we went back to the normal rou-tine of life our Canadian sailors, soldiers, and air personnel continued to defend our rights and freedoms in Canada and abroad. While we were save at our desk or enjoying a refreshment at the Legion,

our deployed men and wom-en were possibly in harm’s way. I encourage you all to get behind Operation: Coffee for Christmas.

Whether you make a per-sonal donation or you drop some change into one of our donation boxes throughout town, you are helping to bring a taste of home to our deployed troops in Afghanistan at Christ-mas. Please remember tax receipts can be issued for any donation of $20 or more.

Please make cheques payable to: RCAF Association Trust. Donations can be dropped off at the Wing offi ce during regular working hours, dropped off at the Wing Lounge after offi ce hours, or mailed to 433 Wing (164 Argyle St. S., Renfrew, Ont., K7V 1T5).

Exclusive proud partners with

newhomeassociation.ca is a leading web based resource where home buyers can search by region, home type and price range to find models and floorplans offered throughout the Greater Ottawa Region.

Talos expands its extensive top 40 list withParkside Townhomes in Brookside

Talos, a second-generation Ottawa home builder, has a Top 40 List of features that defi ne its style, service and su-perlative construction techniques for its homebuyers. Now, with the release of its collection of executive townhomes in Brookside, that list has been expanded, bestowing even more features on Parkside Townhomes in Kanata.

EXCITEMENT, PRIVACY AND AMENITIES

Kanata is a wonderful town to get away from it all, and Brookside is one of Kanata’s most exciting communities. Within Brookside, Talos’ freehold townhomes form a private enclave of 20 units, offering a quiet getaway surrounded by all amenities. For commuters, OC Transpo will be making a stop in Brookside, or take the Queensway into Ottawa, only 20 minutes away. There are two golf courses close enough to put you within “driving” range. Kanata offers an abun-dance of shopping at Centrum Plaza, prominent schools, recreation opportunities and nearby parkland. Brookside is just minutes from Ottawa’s hi-tech core and Scotiabank Place and the 417 to the south.

HIGH STANDARD OF FEATURES

Talos practises a high standard of specs and fi nished in its homes. Showpiece features include a curved staircase in all designs, and a natural gas fi replace with full mantle. Buyers will be surprised and delighted to fi nd solid oak hard-wood with matching wood registers, addresses engraved in keystones, and ceramics in the bathrooms, laundry, foyer and kitchen. Laurysen kitchen cabinets trimmed with crown moulding and light valances, and pots and pans drawers are part of the package, as are colonial trim and window-stoop mouldings, and crown moulding in the master suite. And you don’t have to ask for cabinets in the laundry room – these are included too.

Now, stop for a moment and tally up these items, and re-mind yourself that these are townhomes, with style and fea-tures to rival any single family home, with more to come.

The features continue to mount when you review the construction of these towns – spruce plywood on pre-en-gineered fl oor joists, vinyl casement low-E argon windows throughout, 40-year fi breglass shingles, not asphalt, and plywood exterior walls.

WHAT’S INSIDE?

One of two fl oor plans, The Meadowbrook is an interior unit of about 1,855 sq. ft., with a living room/dining room that embraces the kitchen, complete with a walk-in pantry. Windows line the back wall of the living room to frame the fi replace. Balancing this architectural element is the curving staircase adjacent to the entrance. The master suite com-mands the entire front of the home with a spacious, luxury ensuite and walk-in closet. Two bedrooms share the main bath. The second fl oor laundry is an essential element of today’s family home.

At about 1,865 square feet, The Westbrook features a kitchen that fl oats between the breakfast room, living room and separate dining room to create well-defi ned living spac-es. The upstairs layout is similar to the Meadowbrook with the exception of a window over the staircase. Both plans have the option of having a fi nished family room and a full, four-piece bathroom on the basement level.

Riverfront Estates is a community that’s designed to bring people together. Rather than divide the space along the nearby Mississippi River for a lucky few home owners, the waterfront is being developed into a park for everyone in the area to enjoy.

The tranquil atmosphere of Almonte has allowed this exceptional community to develop into one of the Ottawa-area’s most desirable places to live. Neilcorp Homes, a company known for its personable and customized approach to home building, had a unique vision for Riverfront Estates in mind from the first planning stages.

“The idea from the beginning was that there would be riverfront park areas for the whole community to use,” says Robert Dick, co-owner of Neilcorp Homes. “The idea is to open it up and let the community enjoy the waterfront.”

It’s not just the community setting that separates Riverfront Estates from other communities near Ottawa. Every home is built to the needs and desires of the homeowner by Neilcorp’s team of highly skilled craftsmen. In 2007, Neilcorp was a finalist for the Tarion Award of Excellence – a prestigious honour that selected Neilcorp among the top

five medium-sized home builders across Ontario. More than 18,000 companies competed for the prize, but Neilcorp’s dedication to excellence and outstanding value for its customers set it apart.

Riverfront Estates is the perfect example of Neilcorp’s customer service. Each house is custom-built to the requests of the homeowner, and owners can expect to move in within five months of purchasing a Neilcorp home.

“The quality is unmatched, and we never miss a closing date,” Robert says. “So many times we walk people through their new homes and they’re just ecstatic.”

Almonte provides an ideal location for people who want to combine the best aspects of a small community and the advantages of living near one of Canada’s largest cities. A charming main street, great schools, terrific bars, an excellent hospital, and beautiful parks are just some of Almonte’s most exciting features.

“It’s got that small-town atmosphere and big-city services,” says Robert. “It’s got everything that the big city offers: sports facilities, entertainment, a very vibrant arts

community and much more.”

The location also keeps the price in check. Compared with a similar home in Ottawa, a Neilcorp-built home in Almonte costs as much as $100,000 less. Often, homeowners re-invest this money into making the custom adjustments that make their house feel more like a home.

While some home builders are experiencing slowing business due to the recent recession, Neilcorp’s quality homes are continuing to sell. Since the grand opening of Riverfront Estates in April, these beautiful homes are still in high demand, and going fast.

“They’re selling like hotcakes,” says Robert. “Many other areas are experiencing slow sales, but there’s something very special about Riverfront Estates.”

“First of all you’ve got Almonte, then you’ve got an award-winning builder, and you’ve got a great location,” Robert says. It’s the combination of all these factors that make Riverfront Estates an ideal place for your next home. “You put those things together and it’s wonderful. When people go to Almonte, they just fall in love with our homes.”

Many Canadians are shocked to learn that Can-ada ranks very poorly on a list of industrialized countries which promise to promote children’s rights and well-being. The promise to protect the rights of children was made twenty years ago when Canada played a central role in drafting and promoting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). At that time, Canada was considered a world leader. The CRC is a legally binding instrument. By signing, Canada is obligat-ed to comply with it.

In 1993, all federal parties unanimously passed a bill pledging the elimination of child poverty in Canada by the year 2000. The reality is that in 2009, according to various reports on the government website www.gc.ca , on average one in six children in our country live in poverty. This number varies from 1 in 10, 1 in 5, or 1 in 2 depending on the com-munity.

But child poverty is not the only indicator of the well-being of children. “The true measure of a na-tion’s standing is how well it attends to its children – their health and safety, their material security, their education and socialization, and their sense of being loved, valued, and included in the families and societies into which they are born.” These are the indicators used by UNICEF in its Report Card on the performance of all the countries of the world which signed on to the CRC.

A UNICEF study in 2007 found that Canada ranks 12th out of 21 countries of the Organiza-tion for Co-operation and Economic Development (OECD)when 24 dimensions of child well being are considered. The Report Card points out many areas for improvement. For example, while we rank well in education, Canada places 22nd out of 29 OECD countries when it comes to preventable childhood disease, and ties for last with Ireland in a compari-son of childcare services among 25 developed na-tions.

Citizens who are concerned about the present and future of our children know that no progress is made by mere wishful thinking. In Renfrew County, youth and adults have had an opportunity

to become more aware of the 54 articles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child at town hall meetings hosted by the Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN). The partici-pants found that while elementary and secondary students study human rights through the Social Studies and Civics

curriculum, many adults have not had the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the CRC. Children, youth and adults are invited to attend the forum Speak Out for Chil-dren’s Rights Nov. 21 to acknowledge the 20th anniversary of the CRC. For more, see Community Calendar on Page 8.

Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant supports the use of biomass for energy genera-tion and the preservation of jobs in the working forest.

Biomass consists of wood chips, sawdust and other waste.

Gallant says Finland is years ahead of Canada when it comes to utilizing the forest, and other European countries like Italy, Germany and Great Britain also see the value of using environ-mentally-friendly biomass rather than non-renewable fossil fuels.

“Canada has the potential to triple its current biomass energy production,” Gallant said in an Oct. 26 news release. “Nowhere is that more apparent than here in the Upper Ottawa Valley.”

She said the Biomass and Re-newables Research Program of the federal government is work-ing to increase the use of bio-mass fuels by collaborating with the designers and manufacturers of biomass burning furnaces, boilers, stoves, fi replaces and equipment components and the producers of biomass fuels such as chunk wood, wood pellets and chips, fi replace logs, corn husks and tree bark.

In a Nov. 6 news release, Gal-lant welcomed chief of military personnel Major-General Walter Semianiw and Leslie Natynczyk, spouse of Chief of Defence Staff Walter Natynczyk, for an update on care provided to soldiers re-turning from deployment.

The news release explained the idea behind Joint Personnel Support Unit and their Integrated Personnel Support Centre is that wounded, injured and ill Cana-dian Forces members need only go to one place to receive access to all services that are available to them in their recovery and re-habilitation.

Gallant also supports efforts to help solve the local doctor short-age.

In a Nov. 16 news release, Gal-lant supported a number of jus-tice initiatives to support victims rights with the introduction of legislation to end sentence dis-counts for multiple murders, laws targeting identity theft, restrict-ing credit for time served and tougher sentences for fraud.

“We cannot bring back those who have been so callously mur-dered, nor repair the hearts of those who have lost loved ones to murder. But we can ensure that those who commit the most seri-ous crime of all, taking a life, will pay a more-appropriate price. The value of each life taken will be acknowledged,” said Gallant.

The new legislation would al-low judges to impose consecutive parole ineligibility periods on people convicted of more than

one fi rst- or second-degree mur-ders.

Gallant said the legislation will also crack down on white-collar crime and provide tough-er sentences for the criminals responsible.

The proposed legislation also addresses requiring offenders to make restitution to their vic-tims.

Gallant’s news release says a new power would be added permitting the court to order,

as part of a sentence, that an offender be required to pay res-titution to a victim of identity theft or identity fraud for costs associated with their efforts to rehabilitate their identity, e.g., the cost of replacement cards,

documents and correcting their credit history.

She said this provision will complement existing provisions which permit restitution to be ordered for actual economic or other property losses.

Look Who’s Coming

By Rob BrodieOttawaSenators.comThere is something

about being a goaltender from Quebec, a special pride in being part of a seeming-ly endless pipeline to the Na-tional Hockey League.

Let’s just say Pascal Leclaire knows full well he is repre-senting more than his team when-ever he settles in

between the pipes for the Ot-tawa Senators. He is follow-ing in a lineage most recent-ly highlighted by two of the game’s all-time greats, Pat-rick Roy – who backstopped the Montreal Canadiens to their last two Stanley Cups (in 1986 and 1993) – and Mar-tin Brodeur, a three-time Cup champ with the New Jersey Devils.

“It was great for us, the Quebec guys,” said Leclaire, a 26-year-old native of the Montreal suburb of Repen-tigny. “Those guys are huge examples for us.”

Leclaire grew up idolizing Roy and wears the same No. 33 with the Senators, just as he has since his minor hock-ey days. Without question, it was his biggest infl uence in deciding to be a goaltender as a youngster.

“I grew up in Montreal when Patrick Roy was there,” said Leclaire. “He was such a big deal in the city. He was the Wayne Gretzky of goalies.

“He was a superstar and you just followed him, I guess

like guys like Alfi e (Daniel Alfredsson) and Spezz (Jason Spezza) are for us here (in Ottawa).”

But truth be told, it was the tools of the trade that did the most to capture a young Leclaire’s attention.

“When you’re a kid, you try a bit of everything,” he said. “It seemed, though, that right from the get-go, I al-ways liked the gear. I remem-ber being really obsessed when I was a kid with the goalie equipment. The fi rst set of equipment my parents bought me, I slept with it. It was a big, big thing.”

But soon enough, Leclaire began to notice there was a certain cachet attached to the position for a francophone from Quebec. Their names kept showing up with great-er prominence in NHL drafts and on the rosters of Cana-da’s teams at the world junior hockey championship, a tour-nament Leclaire would go on to play in himself for a silver-medal winning Canadian en-try in 2002.

“It seemed like there was a Quebec goalie coming out every year in the draft,” he said. “And the world junior (team) always seemed to have a francophone goalie.”

Always, there was Roy, the iconic goaltender who would offer his congratu-lations to an 18-year-old Leclaire when the Columbus Blue Jackets drafted him in-to the NHL in 2001. Leclaire looks at the numbers pro-duced by Roy and Brodeur over the years and is proud to follow in the path they blazed for so many other Quebec net-minders.

“For me, I’m just hav-ing fun and it’s a dream to play in the NHL. I’ll just try to play as long as I can,” said Leclaire. “When they men-tion goalies, they start with those two and then down the line, you get your name (on that list) and it’s fun to be a part of that. But those guys are legends and if I could do half of what they’ve done, I’d be happy.”

Buffalo SabresSaturday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m., CBCIf early indications mean anything, the Sabres appear to be back as a contender for top honours in the Northeast Division. Goaltender Ry-an Miller has re-established himself as one of the National Hockey League’s top stoppers, with his early-season play stamping him as a sure bet to land a spot with Team USA at the 2010 Vancouver Olym-pics. Up front, Thomas Vanek remains the Sabres’ top goal threat and he’s helped offensively by the likes of Rockland native Derek Roy, Tim Connolly, Jason Pominville and Drew Stafford. The Buf-falo blue line has received a boost from the play of Tyler Myers, a 6-foot-7 rookie who’s living up to some rather giant hopes.

Hello Jim: I was at the hunt camp for sup-per tonight and had some guests on the front porch. In the 30 odd years of hunt-ing in the Ashdad area I have never seen this little critter before. There were four or five of them looking for a free meal. I think they are flying squirrels.

Bob Hoare Hello Bob: You are

correct, your guests were Northern Flying Squir-rels. They are friendly little critters and live in a nest that may have three or four families in the one tree. Because of their gen-tle nature they are easy prey for a variety of pred-ators. Fishers, Pine Mar-tens, Ermines, Long-tailed Weasels, hawks and owls all take their count.

This species seems to float from tree to tree. They are gliders and not fliers. It is not unusual for them to make trips of up 100 yards. The glide membranes are cape-like furred skin that extends the length of their bodies from their forelegs to their hindlegs.

To launch themselves

on a trip the animal choos-es a target and then leaps into the air head down, legs extended and tail up. By a series of turns and twists they manage to reach their destination with a soft thump. Control in flight is accomplished by adjusting the forelegs, wrists and tail.

On the ground flying squirrels are rather clum-sy. They must hop or leap because the skin flaps pre-vent them from running. They are also unable to swim for the same reason.

When flying squirrels are crouched on a branch their most outstanding feature is their large, dark, shiny eyes. The fur is gen-erally gray with white tips but may have cinnamon highlights on the back and white and black stripes on the tail, skin folds and around the eyes.

The diet of flying squir-rels is different than other squirrels. Lichens, fungi, berries, buds and some

seeds make up the bulk of their diet.

Two to four young are born to a female. They leave the nest when they are about 62 days old. At three months they take their first flights and it takes another month for them to become skilled.

Tracey Marki saw a White-tailed Jackrabbit in their back yard on Peter Street this week. It feet had already turned white in preparation for the win-ter snows.

Rabbits and hares belong to the same order of animals which comprise gnawing mammals with two pairs of upper inci-sors one behind the other. They are famous for their phenomenal reproductive rate. Some will have up to 12 young per litter and some from four to seven litters per year in their southern range.

Numbers are kept under control by the large number of carnivores that live almost entirely on rab-bits and hares. Rabbits and hares have powerful hind legs that give them the speed they need to escape their many predators. In winter their fur turns white to match the snow cover. Rabbits and hares live almost exclusively on browse, the tender twigs of many woodland plants.

MARY JOAN HALEThe library board is reviewing our Long Range

Plan, 2005. Several initiatives have arisen. One is to provide more activities for community outreach. We hope to host many speakers.

On Thursday, Nov. 26 we welcome Tim Yearing-ton, a local Madawaska wilderness guide. He will take us on a colourful journey into the teachings of the Medicine Wheel and the philosophy on which it is based. Please pre-register at the library to help us determine space. We plan to use the chambers, but if numbers go beyond 20, we will need to make alternate arrangements. The fee is $20. We have started our Food for Pines and Mitten Tree again. Please bring in non-perishable food, mittens, hats and scarves to help feed and clothe others this Christmas.

ANNE ENGLISHI attended a library symposium Sept. 23 and 25

entitled Libraries 2020 and with all the latest in technology, perhaps by that date much of what we read will be electronic.

The latest book by Dan Brown, The Lost Sym-bol, has sold more electronic copies than the print-ed word. Scary thought for those who like read-ing. Somehow, reading the paper online with your morning coffee just doesn’t do it for me.

We are ordering new books every month and have begun to develop our DVD collection. We wel-come any suggestions you have in these areas.

We would also like to have photos submitted via e-mail to add to our website.

Local scenery, all seasons, wildlife and fl owers would be appreciated.

We have lots of books that will appeal to your reading pleasure.

We also have large-print books and DVDs, hi-speed Internet service, photocopying and fax.

Does anyone doubt that our townships have interest-ing histories?

If so they would do well to read Marian Patterson-Coombes’ comprehensive history of her native Town-ship of Stafford.

Better yet, come out and hear Patterson-Coombes give a talk on her publication, A History of Stafford Township 1835 to 1991.

Through story, photographs, township records, school roll calls, etc., her book illustrates what a colourful and

important history resides in all of our townships as reflected in all aspects of rural life.

Wonderfully profiled in this valuable record of local history are various settlements within this area; local government with photos of all of the reeves, councillors and clerks; a history of agriculture with biographical details and photos of many of the ancestral farms; the spiritual life of the township with its various churches and organizations; as well as a wonderful collection of school photographs of the many rural schools from

years gone by.The author’s book provides a wonderful insight into

rural life in our community by covering the many orga-nizations, individuals and families that help our settle-ments function as communities and neighbourhoods.

Her work is also a testament to the value of record-ing the history of our local communities.

Plan to attend this presentation on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. at the Osceola Town Hall.

Light refreshments will be served.

MAGIC & MAYHEM In photo at far left, Children’s entertainer and magician Mario Albert has a laugh with young-sters Faith Hamilton of Renfrew and Gina Grindell-Poulin, right, of Eganville, while another partici-pant from the audience of 240 pre-pares to see if this slicer will cut off his hand. The youth survived the ordeal with his hand intact during the Renfrew Recreation Department’s presentation of the Magic & Mayhew show Nov. 7. In the other photo, Mr. Magician is handcuffed before stepping into a locked box, from which min-utes later he safely escaped. JAGUAR JOURNAL St. Joseph’s High School students rememberOn Nov. 11, St. Joseph’s

Catholic High School paused to remember by holding our own Remembrance Day ceremony at the school.

This ceremony consisted of a musical presentation by a school quartet called the Four Strong Winds, comprised of Natalie Walters, Bailey Rogers, Chris-tine and Molly Helferty, and un-der the direction of Kevin Mc-Sheffrey.

Another act included a dra-matic presentation consisting of students in tableau depicting life

at war. This was prepared and presented by Mary-Ellen Vice’s Grades 11 and 12 drama class.

A slide show by Lauren Schmidt and Emily Troutman included scenes of war but end-ed with a list of names of sol-diers both dead and alive who are known to students and staff within our school.

Throughout the ceremony there were prayers facilitated by school chaplain Katie Milosek. At 11 a.m. our whole school stood in silence for a minute, to honour our fallen soldiers and

remember those who are still at war. In addition to our school ceremony, members of our Stu-dent Council executive attended Low Square where Kelly Slight and Ian Connors laid a wreath on behalf of our school.

At St. Joseph’s High School, remembrance is not a one-day event and if you go to our school website, www.sjchs.blogspot.com, you can view the SJHS wall of honour (Remembering the Fallen link), showing the Cana-dian soldiers who have died in the Afghanistan confl ict. St. Joseph’s High School wreath.

#3439 LolaLola is a one-year-old spayed female who came to

the shelter in June as a pregnant stray. Now that all of Lola’s kittens have found homes, it is her turn to find a loving family. She is pretty, affectionate and loves to be talked to and will ‘talk’ back. This curious and playful cat loves to be petted and cuddled. Lola must be adopted by an adults-only home where she will be the only pet and she should be an indoor-only cat.

#3506 NutmegNutmeg is a one-and-a-half-year-old neutered

male who was brought to the shelter in August as a stray who was injured and needed medical treatment. After much tender loving care Nutmeg has healed and now needs a loving home. This playful and curious kitty is very affectionate - he purrs even if you just look at him and loves to be held and cuddled. Nutmeg needs a home where he will be kept as an indoor cat. He should also be the only cat - he does tolerate some cats but is very bossy. Nutmeg is gentle and would be good with children.

Supplies the shelter needs: liquid laundry soap, paper towels and fabric softener sheets.

Pet Valu in Arnprior and Renfrew will be holding a litter drive for the humane society on Nov. 20 and 21. For more details contact Pet Valu.

You can call the Arnprior and District Humane Society at 613-623-0916 between noon and 5 p.m Monday to Saturday or visitwww.arnpriorhumanesociety.ca

NORM DAGGWelcome to the inaugural edition

of Coaches Corner. This will be a monthly column

in which you will find information about happenings involving Sun-shine Coach.

We invite your suggestions for topics you would like to see us cover

If there is anything you wondered about concerning Sunshine Coach, please drop us a line at 44 Railway Avenue, Renfrew, Ontario K7V 3B1 or send an e-mail message to [email protected].

We have just completed the 2009 edition of the Reach For The Rain-

bow Telethon and are extremely happy to report that the community of Renfrew and area have responded whole heartedly and raised a record amount of $61,773.

PULLING TOGETHERIt took the efforts of a large group

of people pulling together to make this happen and we are grateful to the immensely talented musicians and performers who provided the entertainment during the day.

In addition, TVCogeco broadcast the telethon live over community channel 22 for the full seven hours and myFM did a simulcast during the hours of four to six.

Our masters of ceremonies, Doug Miller and Kathy Dagg, were joined by numerous celebrity guest hosts who all together did a masterful job in keeping things on track and mov-ing towards our goal.

In addition, we featured several

Hour Angels who, although young in years, were very helpful in bring-ing recognition to our Angel Club members.

As in past years, dedicated teams of volunteers managed the huge pro-duction, administrative and finan-cial management tasks required to carry the telethon to a successful conclusion.

The telethon is our annual oppor-tunity to reach out to businesses, service clubs, churches, schools and individuals within our community to assist us in our mission of ensur-ing that the Sunshine Coach Service continues to be a viable transporta-tion solution for people with physical disabilities and mobility challenges.

During difficult economic times it is most gratifying to witness a community pulling together to help those who are the most vulnerable among us. Congratulations, Renfrew and area, on a job well done!

HARRY FERGUSON

August 6, 1938 - October 11, 2009During the past month, our family has re-ceived tremendous support throughout this diffi cult time of sorrow. We were deeply touched by the number of people who came to the wake, and wish to thank those who sent fl owers, cards, food and online condo-lences. We greatly appreciated the numer-ous donations made in Harry’s memory to the Renfrew Victoria Hospital and to St. An-drew’s United Church, Calabogie. We’d like to acknowledge everyone who took part in the funeral service, Matthew and Daniela Brydges (McPhail and Perkins) for their care and compassion, and the Calabogie Women’s Institute for the wonderful lunch-eon. Thanks also to Dr. Max Buxton for his many years of care. Harry touched a lot of lives through his teaching, country music, trailer sales, and campground business. He will be missed by many, but especially by his family.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE

Notice of Study Commencement/Public Open House No. 1 County Road 71 (Matawatchan Road)

From Highway 41 to County Road 65 (Centennial Lake Road) Environmental Assessment

The County of Renfrew has initiated an environmental assessment of the roadway needs for County Road 71 (Matawatchan Road) from Highway 41 to County Road 65 (Centennial Lake Road). The purpose of this assessment is to prioritize transportation needs that will define subsequent roadway improvement projects. The study will assess both roadway safety (horizontal and vertical curves, roadway width, clear zone, and sight distance) and pavement needs for County Road 71. The study will prioritize these needs followed by consideration of both short term and longer term strategies to phase improvements.

The Study will include documenting the existing conditions of the roadway and providing the County with a recommended work program. We are interested in hearing your comments on the roadway issues, needs and proposed improvement options. Public Open House No. 1 meeting will be held as follows:

Denbigh-Griffith Lions Hall 25991B Highway 41 December 3, 2009

MAYNARD VAN DER GALIENRURAL ROUTES

I fi nished baling the last of my second-cut hay on Saturday, Nov. 14. I made 40 greenish large round bales. The baler was given a complete cleanup with the air compressor and put away in the machine shed. It feels good that’s done! It’s the latest I have been haying, thanks to some wonder-ful Indian Summer weather.

Who would have thought that we’d have temperatures as high as 18 degrees C during hunting season? November is known to be a cool, grey month. The three weeks of late summer that we are enjoying this month makes up for the wet July.

The hay I baled was grassy with a bit of clover in it. Timo-thy fi rst cut usually doesn’t yield a second cut. Adequate rainfall every month was ideal for forage growth – even grasses with their shallow roots. I cut the grass-clo-ver hay on Tuesday and it was bone dry when I baled it. Cattle like soft hay and this was soft feed.

I usually fi nish second-cut hay by mid-September, but this was a different year. The forages were lush and there were not many sunny four- or fi ve-day periods that hay would dry enough to be baled. I know I should be wrap-ping the bales with plastic, like most farmers do nowadays, but that’s more work and another expense.

So when the weather doesn’t co-operate, I just cut enough hay to make a dozen round bales and

bale them when they are as dry as can be before precipitation falls. That hay is fed immedi-ately to calves and young cattle housed in the yard and barns. I don’t store that hay because it will heat and mould.

It’s much faster doing it this way than with a crop chopper and blowing it into a forage wag-on. The crop-chopper cuts only fi ve feet and that’s a slow way of cutting forage. And there’s lots of leaf loss on windy days. It doesn’t all get to the back of the forage wagon.

FORMER TIMESThere was a time when most

farmers with cattle had a crop chopper. It was a daily chore cut-ting a load of feed before the wind came up. The forage couldn’t be cut when it was wet. If you did it made for gummy wet feed that cattle don’t like. So you waited until afternoon when the forage was dry. A strong wind could blow it away from the chopper blower pipe before it made it to the wagon. That always hap-pened in the fall when the forage was lighter in weight.

It makes more sense cutting with the swather and rake two 12-foot swaths together. It bales up well and very quickly.

I also have a good amount of second-cut hay that cured per-fectly and is stored in the hay barn and fed to the calves during the winter and spring months.

There was a time when I would cut my fi rst hay at the end of May or in early June. Early-

cut alfalfa has the highest pro-tein when it’s in the fi rst bud stage. And with a large acreage to cut in a summer it was good to get an early start.

In recent years my thinking on early-cut hay has changed. I feel it may be high in protein, but it lacks body. Hay cut a little

later – say, mid to late June – has higher fi bre levels. Sure, it’s not as high in protein, but fi bre is also very important for cattle. Early-cut hay is hard to dry. So it’s made into haylage.

Why do dairy farmers with their early-cut haylage have high veterinarian bills? Why do they

have cows with twisted stom-achs and serious feet problems, including strawberry foot?

It’s the feed. They’re pushing the cows for

high milk production. Cutting later probably pays off in terms of lower vet bills for sick cows and the elimination of sore feet!

Research shows hay that is cut too early lacks fibre
