Until six years ago, the fiscal year was October 1 through September 30, which was changed to the calendar year in 2012. However, the annual board term remained on the October 1 schedule. As recommended by the Strategic Planning Committee, the modification to the by-laws now allows board members to be well versed in the organization for the budget planning process, which starts in November. Subsequently, the board election timeline has changed, too. Nominations will be solicited at the beginning of August for the three open director positions. As you consider either serving yourself or nominating a candidate, here are four reasons why being a board member is beneficial to professional growth: SERVE THE COMMUNITY Providing your time and guidance to the mission of an organization is a positive way to share your time and expertise while influencing growth and change. The Chamber has three major tenants to its mission: creating commerce in the shoulder seasons, providing members the opportunity for professional development and serving as an advocate on issues affecting the local business community. GAIN A BROADER PERSPECTIVE As a Board member, contribute to the conversation on key issues such as infrastructure and short-term rental tax legislation. Being knowledgeable on the various concerns of lower eastern Sussex County allows Board members to grow in their business expertise and community leadership. LEARN DIPLOMACY Constructive conversation is crucial to influencing the Chamber’s mission. Discussions on key issues lead to different perspectives as the Board works for a common position on any particular issue. The Chamber has 13 Board members from diverse backgrounds, which creates strong dialogue in meetings and sustains a positive direction for the organization. GROW YOUR NETWORK Serving on a Board of Directors allows you to interact with a variety of people and populations. The interactions in Board meetings and attending events as an ambassador of the Chamber allows a Board member to increase business contacts and grow in leadership. M ember SPOTLIGHT: MCKAY MORTGAGE COMPANYTina McKay is a familiar face at many of our networking events. Equally as omnipresent is her son Brendan McKay at networking events for the Bethesda, Maryland Chamber of Commerce. Together they founded McKay Mortgage Company, which is a family partnership dedicated to helping people make confident and informed decisions when purchasing a new home or refinancing their current mortgage. Tina and Brendan both have extensive backgrounds in every area of mortgage banking from origination to underwriting to closing, and pride themselves on clear communication, timely responses, expert insights and optimal home ownership strategies tailored to each borrower. Tina has been a local industry leader for the past two decades. As a former president of the Maryland Association of Mortgage Professionals, she has a deep understanding of how regulatory changes and real estate industry trends impact the residential mortgage market in all of the regions she serves. Over and above that, according to Brendan, “being involved with the Bethany-Fenwick and Bethesda Chambers is beneficial because it’s important to know what’s going on in the communities that we live in, both as business owners and citizens.” He added “The Chambers give us an outlet to contribute to our communities, have a positive impact, and meet other people who are trying to do the same.” If you are wondering if now is the right time to refinance, McKay Mortgage offers a free evaluation of your current mortgage to see if restructuring makes sense, including offering options to lower your payment, pay off your mortgage faster, eliminate credit card debt, or take cash out of your equity to finance large expenses such as college tuition or home renovations.

SCHOLARSHIP VOTE AND ANNOUNCEMENT AT ARTS FESTIVAL On September 9, 2017, at the 39th Annual Bethany Beach Boardwalk Arts Festival, the public is invited to vote on the winner of a $1,000 scholarship to a local student artist. At the popular one day show, in addition to the vote, more than 100 juried artists, both local and from around the country, will display works of jewelry, glass, pottery, watercolor and oil paintings, photography, basketry, wood working, and more along the boardwalk and street festival areas in downtown Bethany Beach, with the Atlantic Ocean as the backdrop. The special event takes place from 10am-5pm. The five finalists and their mediums for the 2017 scholarship award are: Jose-phine Grimes – scratch & water color, Brook Hoban – charcoal, Jorge Cruz – pencil & scratch, Kenya Purnell – acrylic paint, Devin Bailey – charcoal & white tint. Introduced in 2014, the Quiet Resorts Charitable Foundation (QRCF), in part-nership with the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce (BFACC), awards an annual scholarship to a local junior or graduating senior artist who lives in zip codes 19930, 19939, 19944, 19945, 19966 , 19967, 19970 and 19975. Students submit their pieces to a panel of objective professional artists; five finalists are then select-ed. The winner is selected by a public vote between 10am-2pm at the Arts Festival and will be announced at 4pm at the bandstand in Bethany Beach.
