Energy – and Climate Protection Strategy of NRW
The NRW government will:
reduce the consumption of energy – energy saving
the share of renewable energies in primary energy supply increase (20% in
2020)
efficiency, especially in the generation of electricity from energy sources by
cogeneration to significantly increase (up to 25%)
 international energy technology transfer force
by mid 2011, a climate protection plan and climate protection start program
climate change on the planning level take full account of
administrative obstacles
NRW is to be again a pioneer in wind energy
electricity from wind will increase from 3,5% to 15%
Objective: reduction of CO2 emissions in 2020 to 25% over 2005

North Rhine Westphalia – Energy Road Maps 2007 / 2010*
NRW Energy Efficiency Program (reduce of energy by 20% until 2020)
Boost energy efficiency in buildings– The refurbishment of state owned buildings >> than 2%*
Development of innovative and energy efficient technology– Cogeneration by 25% in electric power generation processes*
Use of Renewable Energy (double until 2020 for electricity / 4x for heat)
Develop the part of new and renewable energy in the energy mix– 2% of the landscape for windpower (~ 700 km2 ); 15% electricity from wind (today: ~3,5%)*
Support export renewable energy technology (wind, solar, biogas)
Energy Research in NRW
Energy storage systems, nearly CO2 free power plant technology
Energy saving technology, basic and material research
 Target: Energy Research State No.1

NRW wants to stay the Energy Region No. 1
NRW is highly qualified to further develop energy technologies. In comparison to other regions the development can be managed on an existing basis (tradition). The Know How exists for the complex coherences in the energy branch.
A successful development in the field of energy is only possible, if all participants (Politics, Companies, Research Institutes and Universities, Credit Institutes) are working together in Clusters (networks)
