Computing Architecture This DevCon track provides insights into the core technologies and methodologies that Renesas Electronics offers to enable innovation and differentiation for embedded designs. The track discusses how requirements such as integration, power consumption, and connectivity play a key role in a broad range of applications and market segments. Some sessions focus on how the actual hardware “fabric” (i.e.: MCU and MPU system architecture) can be optimized to help address specific market needs, while others highlight the criticality of a software architecture and ecosystem that can enable robust designs and shorter time to market. As part of the Computing Architecture track, speakers will discuss details of the RX 32-bit MCU Family, the RZ MPU Family, and the recently announced Renesas Synergy™ Platform.

Connectivity Embedded applications rely heavily on a variety of communication standards to move digital data around dispersed computing architectures. This track will cover popular serial communica-tion standards such as USB and CAN, with labs showing how to replace a UART with USB CDC (Communications Device Class) and how to use the Renesas CAN API to simplify CAN implementation. It will also review the growing use of Ethernet in industrial IoT networking in a lecture that describes some key aspects for design consideration. The Connectivity track will also offer a variety of lectures and labs on many of the technologies used in wireless connectivity including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and LoRa, as well as the software needed to enable cloud connectivity.

Safety/Security Functional safety (FuSa) and security are indispensable to minimize the risks associated with the reliability and safety of autonomous driving systems for vehicles. Autonomous emergency braking, automatic tracking, and other operation support systems require more sophisticated ECUs with increasing capabilities and performance to support this higher level of control functionality. Likewise, self-driving vehicle control requires complex electronic systems to control the vehicle while achieving a high level of safety. At the same time, the vehicle control required for self-driving vehicles must work cooperatively with infrastructure information from external sources, such as other vehicles and traffic signals. So communication with the vehicle’s surroundings becomes an important factor. With this communication come new security considerations.

This DevCon track will explore the Safety and Security challenges the automotive industry faces from both a hardware and software perspective. Speakers will cover a wide range of topics ranging from functional safety for a range of knowledge levels to software topics such as Secure Boot and FuSa requirements for Autosar.

Security in non-automotive systems is a rapidly growing issue as well. As automotive systems become increasingly connected, the transition to an environment where all devices are always connected to the Internet of Things is driving significant changes in traditional embedded systems design. Speakers in this track will examine how these changes require strong confidentiality, including personal privacy and authentication, robust system foundations with a clear root of trust, and defense in depth to ensure functionality even when under attack.

HMI Human Machine Interface (HMI) design is an exciting and growing discipline within the engineering landscape. Today’s software design tools enable various levels of abstraction for HMI design. For example, they can accommodate embedded designers who prefer to implement very low-level control of the HMI via API calls within their C source code. Or they support others who may prefer to use high-level tools that abstract away the graphics programming entirely. With the latter approach, graphic designers can own the entire HMI design process. Renesas Electronics offers microcontrollers and microprocessors that provide numerous benefits to the HMI designer, including chips with graphics accelerators and abundant on-chip SRAM for frame buffering or direct code execution. Renesas’ close relationships with its software partners makes it easy to exploit the benefits of Renesas hardware and achieve a smooth and fast path to success. In this DevCon track, software and hardware design elements will be discussed.

Motor Control Engineers use many different techniques to squeeze out as much efficiency as possible from their motor control systems. Recently, designers of appliances, building automation systems and industrial applications have adopted brushless DC motors (BLDC) and permanent magnet (PMSM) motors because they offer better control and efficiency. Vector control schemes and power factor correction are just a few examples of how these motors are used to improve overall motor sub-system efficiency. For engineers, the challenge is to select MCUs that have the right combination of math features, such as embedded floating point unit (FPU), high-speed analog with concurrent sampling, optimized subsystems, tools for motor tuning, and software references that enable them to add their unique functionality in as little time as possible. Another important consideration is the design of the inverter stage, where trade-offs are generally made during device selection.

The DevCon 2015 motor control track will provide hardware and software engineers with detailed information to readily adapt these control schemes into their own designs. Speakers will discuss a wide variety of subjects including an overview of vector control; use of an intuitive tuning tool to optimize PI calculations; power factor correction design methods; trade-offs when designing a motor inverter stage; and high-speed, real-time servo motor control. Those discussions will also highlight the benefits of using Renesas’ RX and RL MCUs, RZ/T servo motor SoC, and power devices for inverters.
