Twenty years after inventing the world’s first compact MPV with the Scénic, Renault reaffirmed the model’s game-changing status with the unprecedented design of the Scénic and Grand Scénic, unveiling the new versions in 2016.

Designed by Laurens van den Acker and the Renault design team to be a more modern and sexier take on the MPV, the Scénic takes the inspiration for its eye-catching appearance from the 2011 R-Space concept car. It inherits the same silhouette, 20-inch wheels and front and rear lighting signatures from the design exercise.

Part of the design revolution that has been taking place at Renault through recent model introductions such as the Mégane, Kadjar, Espace and Talisman,

the fourth-generation Scénic showcases a bold new style in the MPV segment, while also enhancing the outstanding modularity that has been paramount to the model’s previous three generations.

Wider than the previous Scénic (+20mm) with a longer wheelbase (+32mm) yet also boasting a shorter rear overhang (-16mm), the Scénic has a fluid and elegant silhouette.

Sculptured sides and a distinctive belt line towards the rear contribute to its groundbreaking style, but it is the standard fitment of 20-inch wheels across the range that is perhaps the key factor in the seductive appeal of the Scénic.

Exterior

The Scénic’s well-balanced proportions are set off with a sporty stance via a wider track front and rear and the segment first use of 20-inch wheels as standard, which work to make the roofline appear lower.

Compared to the previous generation Scénic, the latest model is 20mm wider and has 40mm more ground clearance, while the rear overhang has been shortened by 16mm.

The dynamic front end styling is set off with a steeply-raked panoramic windscreen that offers enhanced vision to the sides, while, with the top-of-the-range Signature trim level, there is also a panoramic fixed glass roof, which without a crossmember makes for an even brighter interior. Aluminium roof bars are standard on the Grand Scénic.

As with other recent Renault models, the Scénic range has a specific lighting signature as standard with permanently-lit 3D-effect rear lights incorporating Edge Light technology. The taillights are horizontal on the Scénic and are vertical on the Grand Scénic. Renault’s now familiar C-shaped front lighting signature is present as seen throughout the revised Renault range.

Also unique to the compact MPV segment is the availability of a two-tone livery. This elegant colour scheme highlights the Scénic’s dynamic proportions and two roof colours are available, as a function of the selected body colour – either Diamond Black or Oyster Grey. The door mirror housings and windscreen pillars are coordinated with the roof.

Interior – outstanding modularity, with record-breaking storage and boot space

The Scénic range continues to offer the travelling comfort that has always been rooted in the Scénic’s DNA, while the model remains as unique and impressively practical as ever thanks to its modularity and record-breaking storage and boot space.

Although a game-changer in the realm of MPVs with its svelte yet powerful silhouette, the range is more versatile than ever. Its user friendliness extends to such useful interior features as One Touch Folding rear seats and sliding centre console.

A feature carried over from the Espace, the One Touch Folding rear seats can be folded effortlessly to achieve a flat floor. The model is the only vehicle in its

class in which this function can be activated from two different places: from inside the boot or by using the R-LINK 2 multimedia system in the dashboard.

The Scénic is similarly the only vehicle in its class to boast a large, sliding centre console with 13-litres of storage space, a capacity that is up to twice that of any of its competitors.

For front occupants, the console provides a lit storage area protected by a sliding cover, plus an integrated armrest, underneath which two USB ports and an audio jack socket can be found. The rear is equipped in exactly the same manner, in addition to two rear USBs, a 12-volt power supply and a dedicated storage compartment. When the centre console is in the forward position, it creates welcome storage space for the driver and front passenger; when it is in its rearmost position, it acts as a partition between the rear seats.

Record carrying capacity

The Scénic sets the benchmark for its segment when it comes to boot space. At 572-litres VDA (seats up; 1,554-litres VDA seats down), the Scénic’s boot has the largest volume in its class and compares very favourably with the average capacity (469-litres) of its rivals.

When configured with just five seats, the seven-seat version of the Grand Scénic offers 596-litres of carrying space.

With the use of the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s Common Module Family (CMF) C/D architecture, the Scénic comes with a wide range of technologies that are more generally associated with the executive segment above and which feature in the Espace and Talisman.

Notably, the Scénic and Grand Scénic benefit from a colour head-up instrument display, Renault’s unique Multi-Sense system to allow owners to personalise their driving experience and the R-LINK 2 connectivity system via a 8.7-inch portrait display that is the largest in the segment.

The retractable full-colour head-up display enhances driving comfort and safety by making driving aids (ADAS) easier to use. Without the driver needing to take his or her eyes off the road, the screen displays all relevant information (current speed, navigation instructions, driving aids) to ensure a relaxed driving experience.

R-LINK 2 is the control centre which gives access to the car’s technologies, allowing easy activation and deactivation of the majority of functions, including driving aids and climate control management. Unique in the compact MPV segment, R-LINK 2 has an easy-to-use ‘pinch and zoom’ screen, much like that of a smartphone or tablet computer, while it also includes voice recognition for the navigation system, telephone use, apps and radio.

R-LINK 2 can be personalised to users with the choice of three configurable home pages and six different profiles, which allow swift access to pre-set driving settings and in-car ambience preferences.

Continuing the Scénic range’s ability to offer technology that is rarely seen in its segment, BOSE® Surround Sound audio is also available. Tailored to the dimensions of the vehicle, the system includes 11 high-powered loudspeakers spread around the cabin that allow all occupants to enjoy an exceptional, immersive audio experience.

Scénic is available with Multi-Sense technology, allowing owners to personalise the driving experience using technology that was first introduced on Renault’s D-segment models. Multi-Sense can be used to modify the accelerator pedal and engine response, engine sound, steering weight, interior lighting ambience through a choice of five colours and – where fitted – the speed of the Efficient Dual Clutch (EDC) gear changes.

Multi-Sense is accessed via the R-LINK 2 display through a button on the centre console. There are five pre-defined driving programmes – Neutral,

Sport, Comfort, Perso and Eco. There are also Neutral, Sport and Comfort engine sounds.

The five interior lighting options are sepia, red, blue, purple and green, and illuminate the centre console (and door panels in higher-series models) to match the colour on the TFT screen and portrait-format multimedia display.

SafetyThe Scénic and Grand Scénic have achieved Euro NCAP’s highest score of five stars for passive safety, which rates the structural elements and equipment that protect occupants when a collision cannot be avoided.

The Scénic range’s platform employs reinforced steels for the main beams, side rails, windscreen pillars and B-pillars to protect occupants inside the safety cell. Some of them are ultra-high elastic limit steels and are capable of withstanding loads of up to 120kg/mm2. Meanwhile, the use of programmed

deflection steels outside of the cabin enable impact energy to be absorbed while keeping the safety cell intact.

The Scénic range is equipped with two latest-generation adaptive front airbags which use sensors to adjust their deployment as a function of the occupant’s build, two curtain airbags for the front and second-row seats plus two lateral airbags at the front.

11

The introduction of the latest Scénic and Grand Scénic marked the introduction of three new safety systems to the Renault range: Active Emergency Braking System with Pedestrian Detection – a first in the segment to be standard across the range – Lane Keeping Assist, and Fatigue Alert.

The trio of new safety systems complement the suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that are made available through the use of the CMF architecture.

Accessed and activated via the R-LINK 2 tablet – these systems have been grouped together to:

• Reassure • Adaptive Cruise Control • Active Emergency Braking System (AEBS) with Pedestrian Detection

• Alert • Lane Departure Warning • Safe Distance Warning • Blind Spot Warning • Fatigue Alert • Over Speed Prevention with Traffic Sign Recognition

• Assist • Reversing camera • Automatic dipped and main beam headlights • Hands-free parking • Front, rear and side parking sensors • Lane Keeping Assist

Renault’s Visio system, comprising of Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition and automatic dipped and main beam headlights is standard on all models.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) automatically adjusts Scénic’s speed to maintain a pre-selected distance from the vehicle in front through a radar which evaluates the gap and then communicates with the engine and braking system. It functions between 30 and 100mph.

Active Emergency Braking System (AEBS) with Pedestrian Detection alerts the driver to the risk of a collision with the vehicle ahead and then brakes automatically to avoid or minimise the effects. Pedestrian Detection analyses the environment, monitoring both stationary and moving pedestrians to predict their intended path. The Pedestrian Detection function operates across a speed range of 4 to 36mph, with vehicle detection up to 100mph.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

12

Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) operates between 44 and 100mph. Should the driver inadvertently allow the vehicle to drift across a lane, this advanced safety system automatically assumes control of the steering to keep the vehicle in its correct lane.

Lane Departure Warning (LDW) is a tactile alert in the Scénic, causing the steering wheel to vibrate rather than emitting a sound, if the system senses the driver unintentionally crossing a line without first indicating.

Safe Distance Warning (SDW) helps the driver to maintain safe stopping distances at 19 to 124mph. A warning pictogram, corresponding to the time interval separating Scénic from the vehicle ahead, is displayed as bars on the dashboard or head-up display.

Fatigue Alert works to constantly monitor the vehicle’s movement via a Bosch-developed algorithm, providing both visual and audible warnings should driver fatigue be suspected.

Page 14: Renault SCENIC & GRAND SCENIC · 2020. 5. 4. · Renault SCENIC & GRAND SCENIC Press Information. Contents At a glance p. 2 Design p. 3 Technologies p. 8 Powertrains, Chassis and

13

Hands Free Parking helps the driver to identify a suitable parking spot and subsequently steers the car into the space. It can cater for parallel, perpendicular and, more unusually, angled parking. In every case, the driver has control over braking and acceleration. It functions up to 19mph.

Automatic High Low Beam (AHL) detects the lights of oncoming vehicles and the rear lights of vehicles ahead and automatically switches to dipped beam. It is also able to detect street lighting.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

Traffic Sign Recognition with Over Speed Prevention (TSR with OSP) reads traffic signs via a camera and informs the driver of the local speed limit, adjusting the speed limiter accordingly.

Blind Spot Warning (BSW) ensures overtaking is conducted safely by displaying a visual signal in the wing mirrors when another vehicle is detected in the blind spot. It functions between 19 and 87mph. The rear view camera displays the space behind the vehicle on the tablet, accompanied by a moving guide line and a static guide line. Further assistance is provided by the ultrasonic 360 degree parking sensors mounted at the front, rear and side of the car.

CMF architecture – built in Europe, for Europe

Built at the Douai plant in Northern France alongside Talisman and Espace, Scénic and Grand Scénic uses the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s versatile Common Module Family (CMF) C/D architecture, which is used on the Mégane, Mégane Sport Tourer, Kadjar, Espace and Talisman. The platform

allows a wide range of cars of different sizes to be created using a variety of modules consisting of out-of-view parts and is based around five available modules: cockpit, engine bay, front underbody, rear underbody and electronic architecture.

Highly efficient powertrains to suit every need

There is a choice of two engines on offer – the 1.3-litre 140hp TCe turbocharged petrol and the 1.5-litre Blue dCi 120hp diesel.

Both engines are available with a six-speed manual transmission or an Efficient Dual Clutch (EDC) automatic gearbox.

When paired to the EDC automatic, either engine provides emissions of 135g/km of CO2. For the manual versions, the TCe 140 offers 137g/km of CO2 and the Blue dCi 120 emits 129g/km of CO2.

Thanks to the engine’s Stop&Start system, which is standard on all models, the availability of the double-clutch EDC transmission, an ECO driving mode which optimises the engine’s performance when cruising and the Renault Driving eco2 feature to help owners adopt a more economical driving style and standard brake energy recovery, the duo of engines and transmission choices offer fuel economy of up to 41.5mpg (NEDC Combined), with CO2 emissions from 126g/km.

The 1.3-litre TCe 140 turbocharged engine produces 240Nm of torque at 1,600 rpm. The six-speed manual version can cover 0-62mph in 10.1 seconds (10.3 seconds for Grand Scénic) and has economy and emissions figures of 47.1mpg and 137g/km. MPG and CO2 emissions for the EDC version are to be confirmed. Acceleration from 0-62mph for the manual version is 9.6 seconds (10.4 seconds for Grand Scénic)

The 1.5-litre Blue dCi 120 diesel engine delivers 300Nm of torque at 1,750 rpm. It returns fuel economy of up to 57.7mpg and CO2 emissions of 129g/km. 0-62mph acceleration is 11.1 second for the manual gearbox version and 12.1 seconds for the EDC automatic gearbox model.

Both engines, with either manual or automatic transmission, are available in Play, Iconic and Signature trim levels.

Safety and comfort amongst the very best in the Scénic’s class

The Scénic’s longer wheelbase (Scénic: +32mm / Grand Scénic: +34mm compared to Scénic III) delivers outstanding road holding which has been enhanced by the standard fitment of 20-inch wheels (195/55R20) throughout the range which position the model amongst the very best in its class when it comes to road manners and braking performance, without detracting from ride comfort.

The car has successfully passed all the industry’s collision avoidance tests (VDA, ADAC, GLENNING and ISO), both with and without Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

Meanwhile, the Scénic range’s braking performance has been improved compared with the third generation of the model. On dry roads, stopping distances between 60mph and 80mph are down three and five per cent respectively. In the wet, the gain over the former Scénic from 50mph is five per cent.

In order to strike the optimum balance between comfort and performance, Renault has deliberately equipped the Scénic range with tyre sidewalls (107mm) that are higher than those of the majority of 17- or 18-inch tyres.

The extra comfort provided by these high sidewalls combines with improvements to the Scénic range’s wider seats giving better lateral support. The use of dual-hardness foam also contributes significantly to on-board comfort.

The single wheel size across the range has also allowed the chassis to be perfectly tuned and adapted to deliver both first-class comfort and engaging handling. Renault’s engineers have worked closely with tyre manufacturers on the efficiency of the Scénic range’s tyres and suspension configuration which features multi-tuned valve (MTV) dampers.

Putting the environment and keeping costs to a minimum first

Twenty-inch alloy wheels enable the Scénic to boast the best possible environmental credentials thanks to the combination of three key factors:

- Low friction: the tyre walls are no wider than those on 16-inch rims (195mm).

- Optimised aerodynamics: thanks to the fitment of narrower tyres, the Scénic’s low CdA (drag coefficient, the second most significant factor in terms of the environment, after the vehicle’s weight) translates into a 2g/km saving in terms of CO2 emissions in comparison with the previous-generation Scénic.

- The use of low rolling resistance (LRR) tyre compounds.

The result is that in the context of the EU’s tyre labelling system – which classifies tyres as a function of their rolling resistance – the Scénic’s wheels achieved an ‘A’ rating, the best score ever awarded to 20-inch wheels.

Although bigger, the Scénic’s 20-inch tyres do not mean any additional cost. Indeed, they are priced at the same level as the 17-inch summer, winter and all-season tyres available for the Scénic III. Furthermore, the tall sidewalls lessen the risk of alloy wheel damage. The rolling radius is more than that of the 17-inch tyres of Scénic III meaning that the tyres will wear less quickly than their smaller predecessors.

The Scénic is built at the Douai plant in Northern France alongside the Talisman and Espace.

Renault has invested €420 million into the plant to facilitate the manufacturing of its latest executive vehicles, which are based on the Renault-Nissan Alliance CMF platform.

The plant was founded in 1970 to increase Renault’s production capacity in the post-war boom period. Over more than 40 years, the Douai plant has built over 10 million vehicles, including five million Scénic units, since

its launch in 1996. Emblematic models include the Renault 5 (1974-1984), Renault 4 (1974-1981), Fuego (1980) and Renault 19 (1988-1995). Since 1995, Douai has built most Mégane family models, including Scénic I, making it the world’s first plant to build a compact MPV.

The Douai site has been ISO 14001-certified since 1999 and sets a benchmark in environmental performance for the Group and the Renault-Nissan Alliance.
