Autumn 2014

Nearly half the year has gone and unless you are a winter sports fan its time

to hunker down with books, TV and the friendly electric blanket. Events have

rather overtaken us in the office: Entertainment Book Sales are well

underway; a date has been set to cook up and test the first set of our

recipes in the cook book project; and Viv heading away to the UK and

Europe for 4 months to help out with family, combined with a little travel,

taking advantage of her husband’s long service leave.

Linda Paterson will be filling in for Viv for the next 4 months. Linda used to

work as a physiotherapist and more recently has extended her interests and

qualifications in quite divergent areas, so will enjoy a good chat on HDTC

and hospital visiting days. Linda’s Profile is on page 4.

We have received a donation of $10,000 from The Canterbury Community

Trust to assist with wages, KIC operations and our care packs. We are very

grateful for the financial support The Canterbury Community Trust continues

to provide, it is vital to our service and funding application always exceed

sector budget allocations, so we are fortunate to receive such generous

consideration.

The CKS AGM is on June 25th and we would love to see you there. It is a

great opportunity to catch up with other members and supporters. If you are

interested in what we do and taking a more active role in our future then

come along and join our enthusiastic committee. There will be a special

raffle just for those attending, refreshments and delicious finger food. Doors

open at 5pm.

Linda Paterson CKS Field Worker

I am looking forward to joining the team while Viv spends time overseas.

I have been in New Zealand for the past 26 years and have gained a

husband and 3 amazing children during that time.

I am originally from Norfolk in England and my extended family are all still

there. I qualified as a physiotherapist and worked for some years in the UK

and here.

In recent years I have worked as a teacher aide, completed a degree at

Canterbury university and volunteered as a treasurer for several

organisations.

I currently volunteer at Riding for the Disabled and am completing a

computing course, enjoy working in the garden, doing pottery and other

crafts while caring for my 92 year old mother-in-law.

The Home Dialysis Advisory Committee, originally set up by Kidney Health Australia, has health profession and consumer representatives from Australia and New Zealand who work to ensure that there are appropriate resources and support for people who wish have home dialysis – both haemo and peritoneal dialysis. The Committee also organises a biannual conference on home dialysis. Some of the recent work by the Committee

may be of interest to readers.

One of the most serious things that can go wrong during haemodialysis is a major blood leak from a fistula or central venous catheter. A new leaflet has been developed to provide tips and advise on how to prevent and manage

an accidental blood spill or leak during a haemodialysis session.

Electrical standards for home haemodialysis and automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) in Australia and New Zealand are covered by Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand. Mandatory regulations were introduced in April 2011 aimed at preventing patient electrocution and incorporated all home medical devices as one group. These new standards would have required a separate electrical circuit protected by a Leakage Protection Device (LPD) (A device to detect current leakage) for haemodialysis or APD

in the home to match the standard for hospitals. The Home Dialysis Advisory

Committee after consultation with renal units considered that these changes would not be appropriate, feasible or economic if applied to home dialysis. The Committee were able to get the Standards Authority to revise the regulations so that the only requirement for permanent APD and haemodialysis installations in the home is that the circuit to the dialysis room must be protected by a 30mA RCD (Residual Current Device) at the switchboard and a patient accessible LPD at the socket in the room (as long as the house and existing circuits are deemed safe for this by an electrician). The new standard will only apply to new installations and existing users do not need to make any changes. There is no mention of temporary dialysis, as could apply to APD where the patient is away from home. Those patients undertaking APD away from home are advised to use a portable LPD. Further advice can be obtained from your local dialysis staff.

ANZDATA Report ANZDATA Report ANZDATA Report ANZDATA Report –––– 2012201220122012 The 35th Annual Report of the Australian and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry has just been published. This report has information on all New Zealand patients being treated for kidney failure at New Zealand’s 12 renal units and 15 satellite units (including the recently opened unit at Albany). During 2011, 477 people started treatment for kidney failure in New Zealand. Diabetes at 42% was the main cause of kidney failure, 24% had glomerulonephritis and 11% hypertension. At the time of the report there were 2,381 dialysis patients – this number has been stable for a few years. Together, hospital haemodialysis and satellite dialysis accounted for 48% of all dialysis patients. Peritoneal dialysis accounted for 33% of all dialysis patients and 64% of all patients dialysing at home. The number of Maori and Pacific people starting dialysis decreased in 2011 (126 patients and 94 patients, respectively).

Potatoes are a good source of energy and common food found on tables across NZ. They are also high in potassium, so if you do have high potassium it is recommended to keep to one ‘fist’ sized serve of boiled

potato per day.

Ingredients

• 3 medium potatoes, unpeeled and thinly

sliced

• 1 medium onion, sliced and separated into

rings

• ½ cup milk

• Ground black pepper to taste

• 1 tsp butter or margarine

½ cup grated tasty cheese

Method

1. Preheat oven to 180°C.

2. Layer potato slices and onion rings into ovenproof dish.

3. Add milk.

4. Season generously with pepper and dot with butter or margarine.

5. Sprinkle with cheese.

Bake in preheated oven for 40 – 45 minutes or until tender and the top

golden brown.

Ingredients

6 cooking apples

½ cup castor sugar

2 Tbsp water

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla essence

½ cup self raising flour

½ tsp mixed spice

Method

1 Preheat oven to 180°C. Lightly grease ovenproof dish.

2 Peel, core and chop apples. Place in saucepan with ¼ cup sugar and water (can use artificial sweetener as alternative to sugar). Cook over medium heat for 5 to 8 minutes or until apple is tender. Drain excess

liquid. Spoon apple into prepared dish. Cover to keep warm.

3 Using an electric mixer, beat eggs until light and fluffy. Add remaining ¼ cup sugar, one tablespoon at a time, beating until thick and creamy.

Stir in vanilla.

4 Sift flour and mixed spice over batter. Using a metal spoon, fold

through batter. Pour over hot stewed apple.

5 Bake for 30 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the sponge comes

out clean. Dust with icing sugar.

Serve with a dollop of custard, yoghurt, or ice cream.

One of her first tasks is to establish a Consumer Advisory panel that will provide consumer perspectives in the development of consumer centered health services. Stephanie came to observe and meet with the full council and core group and in April returned to spend time with us when we met at the Design Lab. At that meeting and observation of design facilities, Ngaere Dawson presented patient stories that had been gathered when researching “The Patient Journey” which gave valuable insights for the planners. Jane Cartright – Community Programme Director-Pegasus Health, work-shopped ideas for ways consumers can be better prepared to help improve healthcare. To this end any feedback in relation to improvement of healthcare no matter how simple would be welcomed. We get multiple requests for assistance and are always pleased to have contact with people who are keen to add value in relation to the consumer perspective.
