OPENING DAYFor knitters, it all begins with the swatch.

Actually, it begins with yarn, needles, and an idea.

New yarn or stash? Your idea or a pattern?

No matter — you need to swatch.

And that swatch isn't just about getting gauge. It’s

about entering a 3-D world where stitch pattern, color

placement, silhouette, and even technique become

active, going far beyond a sketch or a photo.

Swatches — a lot of them — are often all that separates

you the knitter from you the designer.

Along the way when you ask,

“What if?”, your swatch answers.

Learn to understand, respect, and love your swatch.

Your

is TALKING, indulge your inner knitter, LISTEN.

Join Knitter’s editor, Rick Mondragon, as he shares his swatching process.

Marly BirdMarlaina “Marly” Bird fled the world of financial services to launch her Yarn Thing podcast and hasn’t looked back since. To Marly, a bi-craftsy girl who both knits and crochets, the yarn is the star not how you work with it. She’s creative director for Bijou Basin Ranch Yarns and the co-author of Curvy Crochet (Leisure Arts, 2011). You’ve seen her designs in Knitter’s Magazine, Knit Simple, Interweave Crochet, Interweave Knits, Knitscene, Inside Crochet, Wild Fiber, Crochet Today, Knitting Today and Petite Purls, and in the books Knitter’s Book of Socks, Unexpected Afghans, Simply Crochet, Perfectly Plus and Knitting Plus. In her spare time she is a wife to a very understanding husband, raises three kids and teaches at her local yarn store in suburban Denver. Enter the world of Marly at www.marlybird.com and www.thepurseworkshop.com.

In Curvy Crochet learn how to make adjustments to armholes, the neckline, and other trouble spots that will help your finished garments look wonderful. Learn how to use crochet charts to help shape a garment, calculate the shape of a cap sleeve, and alter necklines. Gwen Bortner

Thursday 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm

558-3 Intermediate Knitting in Both Directions Most of us knit in one direction, but what would happen if you could knit in EITHER direction? Bobbles would pop out faster, entrelac would be even more fun, edgings would be added quicker and your yarn would be less tangled. Some call it knitting back backwards, but regardless of the name, it is a great skill to have in your knitting arsenal. You can learn the basics to knitting (and purling) in ‘the other direction’ regardless of the way you knit now! All it takes, as with most things, is a little bit of practice. Learn the how and the why and get started with what some students have called “the coolest thing they have ever learned in knitting”.

Friday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

606-3 Easy Entrelac Basics Have you always wanted to learn entrelac but thought it would be too hard? Whether a beginner or advanced knitter, this class is for you. During this class, each student will have the opportunity to knit a small project to gain hands-on experience in the entrelac technique. Participants will learn the seamless entrelac technique and basic entrelac construction. Hints and tips on the fine points of entrelac, a discussion of other project possibilities and an overview of knitting in both directions will also be included.

Friday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

547-3 Intermediate Sneaky Shaping with Short Rows Knitted fabric has some wonderfully unique properties when it comes to garment creation. One of the best is the ability to create a three-dimensional fabric through the use of short rows. Short rows can be used in a variety of ways including sock heels, shoulder shaping, bust darts, and even interesting stripes. During class, get hands on experience to compare and contrast four techniques: basic short rows, wrap and turn, yarn over, and Japanese short rows. Discover which method produces your preferred result and learn when, where, and how to apply them to various types of knitting projects.

Gwen Bortner is a Craft Yarn Council Certified Teacher, teaching at venues throughout the country and is the author of Entrée to Entrelac. Her designs can be found in a variety of knitting magazines and through her business, Knitability, LLC. Education is probably the most important component of the Knitability business plan as all efforts focus on the company motto of “Taking Knitters to the Next Level”. Whether teaching at a local yarn shop or at a national knitting convention, meeting new people and sharing the love of knitting is one of her greatest joys. Gwen’s teaching philosophy can be summed up in the following quote, “As a teacher, my goal is to help students increase the size of their knitting ‘tool box’. Although I may have a preference, experience has shown that my preferred way is rarely the only way. My mantra is ‘knitting is fun’ and if class isn’t fun, then I am not doing my job.”

Saturday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

385-3 Intermediate Skirt Design for All Shapes and Sizes Knitted skirts are not just for those with slender hips and model-sized dimensions. In fact, the nature of knitted fabric makes them perfect for all sorts of shapes and sizes. Learn the secrets to creating a skirt that will look good on YOUR body. Start with an exploration of fabrics to understand what works best and why. Next gather measurements needed to create a design, custom fit to your lower half. Finally, study skirt structures to see how to apply them to your own design. Leave class ready to design and knit the perfect skirt for your body.

Saturday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

476-3 Easy Knit a Masterpiece from Leftover Yarns If you knit enough projects you have leftover yarn - a lot of it! Or maybe you just buy a single skein as a souvenir from your travels. But the question remains, what to do with all those bits, pieces and odd skeins. Class begins by learning how to organize the yarn for easier use. Next working with the yarn brought to class, experiment with different fabrics that only require a minimal amount of any given yarn. Finally, discuss options for utilizing the fabrics to create a masterpiece project.

Sunday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

901-3 Easy Mobius Mysteries Untangled The mobius has long been held as one of the unique forms in geometry, as a three-dimensional object with only one side. But create it in a simple knitted fabric and it can become a beautiful project. The secret to creating a mobius is found at the beginning of the project. Students will gain an understanding of each of the three different methods for creating this mysterious shape while at the same time gaining insights of how knitted fabric is created. A simple cowl will be started during class.

JC BriarA self-confessed technique freak and skill junkie, JC has a special fondness for textured knitting and novel construction techniques. If it involves lace, cables, or seamless construction, it’s sure to catch her eye. She shares her enthusiasm by teaching at shops and fiber festivals and through her book Charts Made Simple.

NEW

Thursday 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm

503-3 Easy Cast-On Cornucopia Dozens of cast-on techniques exist: 1-strand or 2-strand; loose and flowing or elastic and springy; invisible or decorative. Review your options in this class, try variations on old favorites, and discover entirely new options. Best of all, gain the familiarity you need to choose just the right cast-on for your next project.

Friday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

548-3 Easy Bind-off Bonanza Creating a firm and sturdy bind-off edge is child’s play; you just keep a secure grip on the yarn as you bind off. But what if you need some other kind of bind-off edge? Take this class and learn about supple and seamless bind-offs for sock tops, bind-offs that blend into ribbing, and decorative bind-offs.

Friday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

504-3 Easy Charts Made Simple A chart takes the place of written instructions, telling you which stitches to work. But a good chart does so much more, showing you what the knitted fabric should look like. Learn to read charts, to make sense of their symbols, and to use them to keep your knitting on track and minimize mistakes.

Saturday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

347-3 Intermediate Slick Set-in Sleeves Set-in sleeves give a sweater a crisp, tailored look. And for easy knitting, you just can’t beat sleeves knit from the top down. Pick up stitches from the body, shape the sleeve cap with short rows, and avoid the bulk of a seam and the fuss of easing a sleeve cap into an armhole. Learn to adapt an existing pattern to this approach or to design according to your measurements.

Saturday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

607-3 Easy Lace Basics Yarn-overs matched with decreases: that’s all lace is. An incredible variety of patterns stem from the way a handful of decrease stitches are placed in relation to their matching yarn-overs. Learn to work these decreases, to knit into a yarn-over, and to keep track of your lace knitting while working sample swatches. Pick up tips for choosing yarn and needles, handling mistakes, and blocking.

Sunday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

686-3 Easy Get Twisted! Cables and other twisted knit stitches make for some of the most captivating knitting patterns. Though they look intricate, they are surprisingly easy to create. Learn how while knitting samplers that you can later turn into a drawstring tote bag. Along the way, you’ll pick up tips for reading charts, reading your knitting, and fixing mistakes.

Thursday 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm

102-3 No skills required Intro to Color Color brings life and excitement to our knitting, yet many feel uncertain about how to approach color. The human eye is capable of discerning over three million distinct colors, yet most of us have untrained eyes. Learn about color from an artist’s perspective and begin a journey of enhanced perception. Laura presents color effects in tangible visual terms that illustrate why color combinations work or don’t work. While a basic understanding of the color wheel is useful, this class will not present wheel based formulas such as many have heard of. A new way of sorting color and seeing relationships becomes the basis for exploring color through knitting. You will achieve a deeper understanding of color and perception, and Laura promises you will never look at color in the same way again. You will leave understanding Laura’s favorite axiom: You don’t get WOW by doing the expected!

Friday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

108-3 Intermediate Perfect Pairs: Contrast & Coordinate It’s a daunting task to pick the perfect color to pair with another. This class expands on Laura’s Intro to Color class and takes you through the steps to pair colors that achieve your purpose, whether it be to calm or energize a color; excite or create quiet sophistication in your knitted fabric. Hands-on swatching with a variety of solid and multi-colored yarns allows you to see for yourself how different colors interact with one another. You’ll leave with more confidence in creating color combinations. Note: Must have taken Intro to Color.Materials Fee: $3.00 for additional yarns. Saturday 8:30 am – 11:30 am & 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

103-6 Intermediate Intentional Patterning with Hand-Dyed Yarns Ever knit with hand-dyed yarn and noticed a particular pattern forming? Want to be able to do that reliably? This class is for you! We will cover the different styles of hand-dyeing, with examples of how they pattern. Learn how to read the color repeat in a hand-dyed yarn and then how to harness that repeat into reliable patterning, producing columns of color, flashes and argyles. We’ll examine how to turn those patterns into usable sized pieces for actual garments. Lots of hands-on swatching for ‘repeatable’ results! Materials fee: $5. Sunday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

126-3 Intermediate Color Blending If we think of a knit stitch as a pixel, we realize that knitting is the perfect vehicle for color blending. Take the next color step with Laura and learn how to select colors to maximize optical mixture, creating lovely shading and color blending. Learn to work your own magic on a large group of colors, controlling and selecting just the right ones for a Monet’s garden of yarn. Simple swatches will provide hands-on experience. You will achieve a greater sense of confidence about selecting colors and leave with a deeper understanding of Laura’s favorite axiom: You don’t get WOW by doing the expected! Note: Must have taken any one color course with Laura previously. Materials fee: $3.

Thursday 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm

646-3 Intermediate Phony Cables We love cables but sometimes don’t like the interruption of actually doing a cable. Learn several ways of achieving a cable look without having to re-arrange the stitches. Try out several easier alternatives, including a 2-color faux cable and a trim. These are guaranteed to be unique and often much faster with similar results.

Friday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

339-3 Advanced Short Row Bust Darts Take a look at how darts can improve the fit of your knits, even if you’re not buxom. Learn how to translate this shaping technique from sewing terms to knitting. Learn how to place it correctly—how much to add and where-and how to do it in a patterned stitch.

Friday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

577-3 Easy Join as You go Knitting Most knitters avoid seaming like the plague. When working garment pieces or different colored strips, sewing seams is daunting. Learn how to join as you go for many situations, including edgings. Join a new piece to the left of an existing piece, to the right of an existing piece, or to the top or bottom of an existing piece.

Saturday 8:30 am – 11:30 am & 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

581-6 Intermediate Bias Knitting Without Prejudice Learn this diverse method of knitting that creates different, dynamic, directional lines easily and then learn its applications. Get the angle on your pieces, try various colors and textures for head-turning work. Mix and match several effects simultaneously. Ideas for trims, accents, and even whole garments will be discussed. Go from easy panels to larger projects. Your head will be spinning with new ideas, all without a pattern.

Sunday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

507-3 Easy Tips and Tricks with Lily Learn Lily’s secrets to make your knitting life easier: join a cast-on for circular knitting without adding twist, start a new skein of yarn or a new color without losing the first stitch, attach knit pieces as you work, work a circular bind-off on the neck where the beginning and end are imperceptible, and weave in ends that are too short for a darning needle. Leave class with lots of small ‘fix-its’ and a new eye for knitting details.

Cindy CraigI learned to knit while chaperoning Girl Scouts in Norway. While in our hospitality home, I asked the mom to teach me how to knit, and because I was pregnant with my first son, we started a baby sweater. She had the back finished in two nights, and I was still on the ribbing! I have learned so much since then and now spend my days managing Studio Knitting & Needlepoint, Kansas City, MO. I love helping people learn to knit or crochet — especially, when they get stuck! I knit everywhere I go and am frequently questioned on the sidelines of the soccer field and at PTA and Cub Scout meetings. I love to design and write patterns.

Thursday 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm

560-3 Intermediate Knit Fix Let’s face it. We all have a favorite garment or socks that we have just about worn out but can’t bear to part with, don’t throw it out, let’s salvage it for a few more seasons! We will work on repairing holes that result from different problems. We will practice in stockinette stitch and ribbing. This class will increase your understanding of how knit and purl stitches are created and how they relate to each other when mixed in a row.

Saturday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

She is the author of Seven Things that can “Make or Break” a Sweater®.

Thursday 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm

206-3 Easy Superb Seams Seaming is one of the most important finishing steps for a knit garment. In this class, you will master all the seaming techniques used to assemble a sweater, and understand how to make seams look flat and smooth. Learn how to sew invisible side seams on stockinette, reverse stockinette and ribbing. Find out how selvage stitches make seaming easy, even on the most complex pattern stitches. Practice joining shoulders and attaching sleeves. Discover how to make your garments look seamless.

Friday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

513-3 Easy Seven Things that can ‘Make or Break’ a Sweater® Learn seven things that will make a big difference in the appearance of your sweaters. The smallest details can have a huge impact: increasing in ribbing, bumpy or smooth cast on edge, slanting decreases, invisible increases, perfect buttonholes, flat edgings, and blocking. In this class, you will learn about all of these things while you practice and receive lots of tips and hints. Since you are going to spend hours making a garment, you’ll want to use these techniques to make even the simplest sweater look marvelous. Note: This is an advanced beginner level class.

Saturday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

512-3 Intermediate Long and Short of Knit Alterations You’ve finished your sweater, but the sleeves are too long or the body is too short. Learn how to fix these common fit problems after-the-fact. In this class, you will cut your knitting, and learn how to alter the length of a garment piece. Practice cutting and unraveling in the middle of a knitted piece, knitting down or up from there, and grafting stockinette stitch and garter stitch. Learn a number of strategies for achieving a good fit without re-knitting. And, in the end, learn how to avoid all of this by using a provisional cast on. Bring a sweater to class for discussion of lengthening or shortening strategies. Note: Class focus is on lengthening and shortening sweaters knit from bottom-to-top (or top-down), not on width problems in sweaters knit from bottom-to-top.

Saturday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

613-3 Easy Intro to Entrelac Entrelac knitting creates a fabric with a wonderful basket weave or quilted appearance. Although it looks complex, the knitting is easy and lots of fun to do. In this class, you will create an entrelac sampler as you learn all the steps of this fascinating technique. Class discussion will cover the use of entrelac in garments and accessories, and the effects achieved with various types of yarn.

Sunday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

225-3 Intermediate Advanced Seaming: Texture, Color, Pattern Do you know how to seam stockinette stitch, but find other stitch patterns challenging? Learn how to apply the same techniques and principles to seaming textured stitch patterns and colorwork. The key to seaming is understanding stitch pattern structure and recognizing where to place the sewing needle. We will work with two simple textured stitch patterns — garter stitch and seed stitch — to learn how to identify “where to sew.” These two patterns are representative of many textured patterns and by seaming them, you will understand many aspects of seaming others. You will practice seaming vertical, horizontal, and horizontal-to-vertical seams in garter stitch and seed stitch. Also, you will learn how to adjust textured and colorwork stitch patterns so they match at the side-seams of a garment. Charts and knitted samples will be used to examine the stitch patterns and determine how to adjust them. The class includes a discussion of using selvedge stitches with colorwork and textured stitch patterns. The last part of the class focuses on the knitting and seaming techniques used for set-in sleeves. All of the steps for sewing set-in sleeves will be reviewed, and you will practice seaming the diagonal section of a set-in sleeve on seed stitch swatches. Note: Must be able to sew vertical, horizontal, horizontal-to-vertical, and diagonal seams in stockinette stitch and vertical seams in reverse stockinette stitch (or must have taken Superb Seams class). Must be able to identify the structure of knit and purl stitches in handknits.

Sunday 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm

553-3 Intermediate Special Techniques for Beautifully Finished Sweaters This class covers several knitting techniques that give your sweaters a nicely finished appearance. Tubular cast-ons and bind-offs are attractive and elastic, look exactly the same, and look especially nice with 1x1 rib. In class, you will learn and practice all the steps for working the tubular cast-on and bind-off. Short rows are used to shape knit fabrics without increasing and/or decreasing. We will review the uses of short rows, then work them in swatches. The swatch exercises will represent the use of short rows for shoulder shaping in a handknit sweater. Class instruction covers how to convert your pattern’s difficult-to-seam, stair-step, shoulder bind-off to short-row shaping. Next, you will cut and separate a knit fabric, then graft the pieces back together. These techniques can be used to make sweater alterations and to fix mistakes or small moth holes in knits. Class focus is on understanding and mastering the technique. The class ends with a discussion of duplicate stitch and how it can be used.

537-3 Intermediate A Fair Isle Cowl Fair Isle or Stranded Knitting is the technique used to work patterns with multiple yarns and colors in a row or round. There are several ways to work a Fair Isle pattern but we will specifically explore holding a yarn in each hand and weaving in (tacking) the yarn floats behind the pattern as we go along. Once conquered, this is one of the fastest and smoothest ways to knit Fair Isle. The Magic word to success: Practice...practice...practice.

569-3 Intermediate Knitting Brioche...and Loving It If you look up the definition of BRIOCHE, the online dictionaries will tell you that it is a French yeast bread with a sweet flavor and light texture—it’s probably not the explanation you were hunting for to describe the origins of this wonderfully soft and stretchy form of ribbed knitting! In most cases, Brioche is worked in one or two color combinations and combines slipped stitches with the traditional knit/purl rib; some of you may know it as “knit/purl one below.” Sounds easy enough, right? The knitting begins after you understand the pattern phrasing. Are you ready to try? Let’s venture into this cozy layered texture together and explore the Brioche Stitch inside and out. Tips, tricks and practice will make it a great addition to your technical library!

These mittens have a difficulty level that you can control, and whether you decide to work up the basic pattern or add a cable belt, beaded flower or both, they are fun to make and will always look gorgeous.

Susanna Hansson

Thursday 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm

466-3 Easy Off the Cuff Are they accessories or jewelry? Hard to say. Either way, they knit up quickly, make great gifts and fun additions to a winter wardrobe. And, if someone is cold, there is nothing more effective than keeping the pulse points warm. Basic knitting skills are required, but there’s nothing complicated about this type of bead knitting. Learn an easy way to calculate how many beads to string and then begin knitting the cuff with a provisional cast-on that will allow you to complete it with a three-needle bind-off rather than having to sew it together.

Friday 8:30 am – 11:30 am & 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

627-6 Advanced Bohus Stickning The story of Bohus is a story of couture knitting, sociology, women’s history, social justice, and cultural legacy all in one. Learn more about the Bohus movement, its background and history. Discuss differences between this and other multi-color techniques and discover what it is that makes the Bohus patterns ‘sing’. Participants will be able to examine in detail several vintage pieces from Susanna’s collection. The class project is a pair of wristlets worked in a 50% merino/50% angora yarn from Sweden. Note: You are expected to know how to knit in the round. Materials fee: $25.

Saturday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

449-3 Easy Jogless Fibonacci Stripes Your swatch for this class becomes a cute baby hat—striped to perfection! We will cover how to add rhythm to stripes including using the Fibonacci sequence of numbers and practice the four steps necessary for creating perfect ‘jogless’ stripes every time you knit in the round. Note: You are expected to know how to knit in the round.

Saturday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

551-3 Intermediate Lovers and Runders Many knitters are familiar with the knitted braids that are typical decorative elements on mitten cuffs from the Baltic and Nordic countries. However, they can make a great design element on a sock cuff as well as on the brim of a hat. Worked in bright colors they can add a pop of color to the sleeve cuff of an otherwise plain sweater. Learn about the ‘anatomy’ of the braids and then build your own multicolor versions. Depending on how you use your colors, your braids can look rounded or pointed like chevrons. I’ve developed some special tricks for creating balanced braids and I’ll share all of them with you so you can create perfect looking braids every time. The class title is a mnemonic to help you remember how they are made—you’ll never have to refer back to word explanations again! Note: You are expected to know how to knit in the round.

Susanna grew up in Sweden and learned to knit in the fifth grade, as did all young Swedish girls in the early 1960’s. She has been an instrumental influence in the renaissance of interest in the unique patterned colorwork Bohus Stickning sweaters and her collection of vintage garments was the centerpiece of a highly successful exhibit at the American Swedish Institute (ASI) in 2009. In addition to teaching at all four STITCHES events, Susanna takes her workshops on the road to guilds, retreats, and shops in North America, Scandinavia, Japan, and the UK. Her work is grounded in her love of technique, detail, history, and culture. She loves to teach as much as she loves to knit! Sivia HardingSivia Harding learned how to knit in 2000 and has been churning out patterns since 2003. Her work has appeared in publica-tions under her own name and has been featured in Twist Collective online magazine, Knitty.com, various subscription clubs, and in many knitting books. Sivia is known for her work with exceptional beaded knits. Her self-published designs are found on Ravelry and her website (www.siviaharding.com), and recent updates can be found on her Facebook page.

Saturday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

467-3 Intermediate Moonrise Necklace This class starts with a riotous bead swap and ends with a beautiful, heavily beaded necklace that has been compared to a luscious garden of beads. Students will use lace-weight yarn and short-row garter stitch to create a very special and unique, as well as fun and easy to knit neck piece.

Saturday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

475-3 Easy Knotty Scarflet This small asymmetrical necklet is not as simplistic as it seems. An addictively easy lace pattern provides the basis for bias shaping, and a scalloped border adds charm. You are done in a flash... knot up a corner and you’re on your way, or incorporate a beautiful button for a different look. The crochet hook add-as-you-go bead method is introduced as an ideal embellishment for lace, and we discuss choosing the perfect bead for your project along with other fine points of this versatile technique. A fastastic first lace project, and an engaging class for all levels.

Sunday 8:30 am – 11:30 am & 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm

474-6 Intermediate Fluency Gloves Secret beads hide in the shadows, emerging only when you put on these ribbed fingered or fingerless gloves. Several interesting techniques are covered in this class: the easy swirled rib pattern which looks cabled, but is performed with simple increases and decreases; a special twisted stitch pattern (performed without a cable needle) that adorns the thumb; and of course, the beads which must be strung onto the yarn before casting on. Sivia provides a treasure trove of glove knitting tips and tricks, as well as basic chart reading skills. Pattern includes a graphic representation of how and where to work each stitch of the ribbed fingers, which flow beautifully out of the ribbed swirls on the hand.

Betsy HershbergBetsy Hershberg is a life-long knitter whose knitting world was turned upside down and inside out when she learned how to bead knit in 2002. As ideas for combining beads and fiber began to take over her knitting brain, she found herself on a completely unexpected journey which has forever altered the way she thinks about her “left-brained” self and the creative process. She is thrilled to be sharing some of these discoveries, unique bead knitting techniques and lots of fabulous projects and patterns in her book, Betsy Beads: Confessions of a Left-Brained Knitter, from XRX Books. Betsy also takes enormous pleasure in teaching, feeling it is especially rewarding to help knitters reach new levels of technical knowledge, confidence and independence that will free them to explore their own individual creativity. You can view her work at www.studiobknits.com.

Thursday 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm

515-3 Easy Bead Knitting Sampler Expand your horizons by joining the ranks of happy knitters who have learned how to enhance their knitting with beads of all kinds. As you learn nine different methods to include beads in stockinette fabric, you’ll create a wonderful sampler that coordinates with written instructions to provide the perfect take-home reference guide. We’ll use large beads and worsted-weight yarn, so no worries about eye strain or managing tiny beads. This is the class in which to begin your adventures in bead knitting! Materials fee: $2 (assorted beads).

Friday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

416-3 Intermediate Betsy Beads: Earring Bling! Is this you? You LOVE the two earring designs from Betsy Beads—Precious Hoops and Silver Orbits—but feel just a wee bit intimidated working with such fine yarn, small needles, and tiny beads. No idea where to get all the supplies for these projects. What to do? Take this class! Betsy will provide all the materials for both sets of earrings, teach you the techniques and guide you as you complete at least one of each earring in class. It will help if you have a sense of adventure AND a sense of humor: we’ll be working on Size 00 needles. But it’s so worth it. Look what you’ll make! You can do it! Materials fee: $25 includes everything needed for 2 complete sets of earrings.

Saturday 8:30 am – 11:30 am & 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

552-6 Intermediate Betsy’s Beaded Bracelet Learn all of the techniques and receive all of the materials you need to design and knit your own bead knitted jewelry. You’ll explore combinations of beads and yarn, choose or create an original bead placement design, and learn about bead stringing, chart reading and finishing, including a new kind of graft that results in a seamless join for bead-knitted fabric. While you create your own design for a bracelet, string the beads, and knit it in class, we’ll discuss how the same or similar techniques can be used for necklaces, earrings or other accessories. This is a great knitted gift item that family and friends will truly love to receive! Materials fee: $15 (choice of 5 colors of fiber and 20 colors of glass beads, beading needle, and bracelet clasp).

Sunday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

586-3 Intermediate Betsy Beads: Master Class For many of the projects in Betsy Beads, the proverbial devil is in the details, and this class will teach them. Learn the Zipper Graft that finishes the seamless bead-knit tube of the ‘Twilight‘ necklace as well as several of the ‘Four Seasons‘ beads. Work a bead-woven picot hem that is the secret of ‘Girly Pearls‘ as well as the great beaded cast-on and bind-off used for the knitted beads of the ‘Wrap and Roll‘ necklace. Adding these exciting techniques to your knitter’s bag of tricks will allow you to approach these projects with confidence, and then use the techniques to create exciting projects that are all your own. Materials fee: $8.

Friday 8:30 am – 11:30 am & 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

315-6 Intermediate Perfect the Fit When patterns are written, generic sizing does not allow the perfect fit. Learn to remove size labels and worry only about the finished size for your body. Explore swatching for gauge, changing needle sizes, and playing with pattern stitches. Work backwards from an existing pattern and forwards from a stitch gauge to create a design that will fit your actual body measurements.

Saturday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

671-3 Intermediate Slip One By Me Learn the beauty of slipped stitches and the different variations of things that can be done both in pattern and in yarn choice. Learn about knitting them directionally and how to read the design from your knitting and not from your pattern. Lots of finished garments will be on display to show how things work, how they don’t work and how placement of stitch pattern plays a role.

Sunday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

566-3 Intermediate Miters and the Magic of Moving Stitches Miters can be used to create boxes, rectangles and diamonds by increasing or decreasing the number of stitches you are working. During class you will create the first section of your piece. Then discover how to add to the piece by picking up stitches along one side, along two sides or all the way around (to create a vframe). We will learn about the placement of increase or decrease stitches to make the various miter shapes, and you will learn how to continue to expand the piece until it is completed. Course work will include conversations regarding color and yarn choice. We will play with fashion yarns, classic yarns and textures and how to make them dance around on your garment or accessory piece. This class is perfect for the creative knitter. Materials Fee: $10.

651-3 Easy Introduction to Lace Knitting Lace knitting is often considered to be the ultimate goal of knitters. It is swathed in fear and excitement. In this class, we are going to de-mystify the techniques of lace knitting. Learn how to work yarn overs in a variety of combinations, including double yarn overs; how to make those beautiful shaping lines with several important decreases; and how the two techniques combine to create lace patterns. We will also discuss the tools of lace knitting, including weights and fibers of yarn, lace needles, markers, and charts. Note: Students must know basic decreases.

Friday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

584-3 Easy Tackle Box for Tackling Lace Learn all about the essential tools to make your lace knitting easier and more fun. We’ll discuss the various types of yarns and fibers for lace, and which fibers are best suited to which lace stitches. We’ll look in depth at blocking, including a demonstration of blocking a shawl, and how to use your blocking wires and pins. We’ll also discuss stitch markers, tools to keep you on track with your knitting, as well as some great home-made hints and tricks that I use all the time.

Friday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

528-3 Advanced Fixing Mistakes in Lace Knitting Everyone who knits lace does it eventually. While working a lace shawl, you discover a mistake several rows back. If you’ve inserted a life line, you can rip back safely, but what if you don’t have a life line, or what if you don’t want to rip out all 100+ stitches simply to repair some of them? In this class, we discuss how to fix mistakes big and small in your lace knitting. We’ll practice laddering up stitches in pattern using a crochet hook. We’ll also learn how to rip out a repeat of 10+ stitches, leaving the rest intact and re-knitting only those stitches. Note: Students must be comfortable with lace knitting. Saturday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

669-3 Intermediate Around the World in Lace Patterns Lace motifs and stitch patterns from different regions of the world share many aesthetic qualities, yet each region has its own special focus. In this class, we’ll look at several popular motifs and themes from various regions including Estonia, Japan, and England. We’ll put them together to knit a sampler piece which can be extended to create a beautiful shawl, scarf, or even a hat band. Learn how to create beautiful nupps and twisted stitches and how to combine lace and cables in unique ways. Note: Students must be comfortable with lace knitting.

Brooke began her designing activities by sewing her own wardrobe, inspired by drape and color. She brought her talents to knitting almost 10 years ago, first exploring modular construct, then lace. In 2006, Brooke opened Kirkwood Knittery which she now runs with business partner Robyn Schrager. As a dedicated teacher, Brooke guides knitters through the intricacies of techniques to make their projects as polished as possible.

Judy PascaleJudy Pascale, a native of Connecticut and a life long knitter, launched her career as a professional knitting instructor and designer in the early 1990’s. She has professionally sold her unique knitwear under the name The Judith Collection both privately and at juried shows. For several years she was employed at a yarn shop where she taught knitting classes and assisted numerous customers with their knitting and finishing problems. She is now exclusively teaching knitting and design classes with the emphasis on customizing desired fit. The second phase of Judy’s designer career combined knitting with beads. Using a non-prestringing technique and textured stitches, she has designed classes from small projects to garments. The most recent phase is wet felting. This ancient textile process remains vibrant and fascinating today. Besides teaching for STITCHES, her experience includes The National Needle Art Association (TNNA), Vogue Knitting Live (VK Live), The Knitting Guild of America (TKGA) and different yarn shops and guilds all over the country. Most importantly, Judy has joined the ranks of other talented members of the knitting community whose explosive interest is creating a renaissance for the ageless art of knitting.

Thursday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

571-3 Intermediate Let’s Band Together There’s an alternative to separately attaching a band to an already knitted panel. Learn to convert to a self-finishing edge that can be worked at the same time as knitting the garment. A sampler will be created with several compatible stitch patterns that blend the band and the body together allowing for the proper band tension and providing the luxury of knitting them at the same time.

Friday 8:30 am – 11:30 am & 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

716-6 No skills required Nuno-Felted Scarf Use a Japanese art form to create a featherweight, contemporary, Nuno-felted scarf that drapes beautifully. Use a piece of silk and coax the fibers to easily penetrate, and the result is a highly-textured accessory scarf. You will also learn to accent this scarf using hand-dyed silk hankies. Note: Must be able to stand for much of the class. Materials fee: $10 for rovings, etc. and $15 for a hand-dyed silk scarf.

Saturday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

762-3 No skills required Wearable Wet Felt Flowers Learn wet felting techniques that create life-like 3D flowers. These flowers will be adapted to an optional stem with a unique way to make an attractive scarf or shawl closures guaranteed to stay in secured position. Other creative accessory options will be explored to enhance numerous garments such as jackets and vests as well as home decor. Materials fee: $15 includes roving, wire, and closure.

Saturday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

468-3 Intermediate Beaded Floral Panel Vest This class features a paneled vest with no-prestringing of beads for the floral motif. Friday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Jane Slicer - SmithJane has an honors degree in knitwear design from Trent University in England and extensive experience as a designer and producer of handknit garments and knitting kits through her company Signatur Handknits (sigknit.com). Her book Swing Swagger Drape includes the A-line and Swingcoat patterns for which she is best known. When she is not teaching in the US and England, she is at home in Sydney, Australia.

Thursday 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm

132-3 Easy Untwisting Intarsia Let Jane untangle the misconceptions of working Intarsia—start with a simple vertical stripe from a diagram and not a chart; secure ends and join new colors without knots! Advance to chart work, the logic of a little planning and placement to make the colors work for you! Of course Jane will have colorful sample garments and will show how very simple chart work can have stunning results.

Friday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

368-3 Intermediate Designing with Miters Take a designer’s journey with Jane and mitered squares. First, step out of the square by seeing it as a mitered diamond. Add increases for A-line and Swing and decreases for Jane’s flattering fit and style. Jane talks about how she has learned to accommodate and manipulate the limitations of miters into A-line and Swagger styles, showing garments from her book Swing, Swagger, Drape—all with two-row stripes!

Friday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

394-3 Intermediate Work a Little Magic Jane brings 30 years of experience as a designer from ready-to-wear and custom fitting for her label Signatur Handknits. Let Jane step you through her design philosophy with a 1 hour AV presentation, supported by sample garments and explore the key elements in achieving that extra touch of style for yourself. Students are asked to bring a garment they have knitted but feel could be improved — “I love it but “ garments! The class will discuss each garment presented, suggesting and debating options, learning with and from each other. Hear Jane theory’s, see it happen and you’ll understand how to make simple adjustments to custom fit for yourself.

Saturday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

685-3 Easy Traveling Textures with Bobbles and Bells Explore and understand simple textures from moss stitch to cables. Learn how to read your knitting in relation to instructions and simple graphs and how cables, bobbles, and bells bring dimension to the surface of the knitting. Jane will show garments and demonstrate how she uses textures within most of her designs. This class brings many elements together from knitting texture to understanding how texture is used by designers.

Saturday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

684-3 Easy Cables and Zig Zags This class is for students ready to use their cable needle for more than cables — traveling stitches! Great things can happen once we get the stitches travelling across the knitting — diamonds even! Join Jane and learn to not just read the pattern but read your knitting too — turn the lights onto your needles! Jane will show sample garments and show how texture is involved with shaping garments for A-line and swingcoat. Be sure not to forget your cable needle!

Friday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm393-3 Intermediate Design Your Own Pi Shawl The Pi Shawl is a great project for exploring center-out and lace knitting. Described by its un-ventor Elizabeth Zimmerman as having “absolutely no pattern,” the simple shaping of the pi shawl makes it supremely easy to customize your garment as you go to your heart’s delight. In this workshop, we’ll learn the architecture of the Pi Shawl, and pick out a lace pattern or two, then cast on and get knitting. We’ll learn the disap-pearing loop cast-on technique and magic loop method for working in the round. Class handouts will include several examples of lace patterns that work well with the Pi Shawl’s geometry, and you’ll also learn how to modify a lace repeat to suit your needs. Note: Must be comfortable with lace knitting.

Saturday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

462-3 Advanced Eternal Knot Baby Blanket Have you heard of traveling cables? These cables travel so far the fabric can’t contain them! This sumptuous and thickly patterned baby blanket creates the illusion of a knot woven into itself without end. We’ll also learn a sanity-saving technique for correcting miss-crossed cables. With lots of loops for little hands to hold onto, the completed blanket will make a wonderful baby gift. Students may also continue the sample we work in class as a scarf.

Saturday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

465-3 Intermediate Revolutionary Knitting Knitting from the center out is a ‘revolutionary old technique’ for making just about anything. Working on double-pointed needles and beginning with just a few stitches, our work will grow outwards with each spin around the needles. In this class we’ll learn the disappearing loop cast-on and knit a beautiful pinwheel pattern. What you begin in class could become a coaster, a holiday ornament, a hat, a baby blanket, a pillow, or a tablecloth—the choice is yours!

Sunday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

464-3 Intermediate Lace and Loop Scarf This complex asymmetrical scarf will have you daydreaming about corkscrews and roller coasters as you follow the twists and turns from start to finish. Gravity-defying loops of I-cord wrap around the neck, while a spreading bell of simple lace dangles below. As fun to wear as it is to make! We’ll cover basic lace techniques and I-cord in class.

Anna ZilboorgNow an Anglican Solitary living in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Anna has expanded Magnificent Mittens to include Socks. Her other books include Fancy Feet, 45 Fine & Fanciful Hats to Knit, Knitting for Anarchists, and Socks for Sandals and Clogs.

Thursday 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm

664-3 Advanced Twisted Traveling Stitches Austrian twisted travelling stitches create patterns in high relief that resemble woodcarvings. They require a few special techniques (among them, how to interpret the charts) and some practice, but are well worth the effort if you enjoy careful knitting. They can also provide a wonderful base for embroidery. This class will focus on flat knitting, which is much harder than in the round with these patterns, but gives the greatest flexibility for usage. After a few exercises, we’ll make a cell-phone cover that could easily turn into cuffs for an elegant sweater.

Friday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

534-3 Intermediate Freesole Socks For avid sock knitters: this new construction makes possible stranded socks with plain soles and socks with different yarns on the soles, insteps and tops. But its greatest advantage comes later, when the sock has developed a hole. Any part of the sole or heel can be easily removed and reknit. The socks begin with a 2-part toe (pick-up shaping on chain technique), continue up the instep in pattern (2-handed-backwards technique), then work the sole, attaching as you go and shaping a gusset (strip-joining technique). Finally turn the heel, pattern it, join the front, and knit up the leg. All this, making a sock large enough to store quarters in in your car. Note: Must be comfortable with DPNs and 2-color stranded knitting.

Saturday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

902-3 Intermediate All about Stranding This basic stranding workshop covers knitting with two colors, one in each hand, two in your left hand or two in your right hand. We’ll make and cut steeks without a sewing machine and carry colors over long distances.

Sunday 8:30 am – 11:30 am

903-3 Intermediate Surprisingly Special Techniques Learn techniques that Anna has found more useful than she might have imagined. Central is the perfect buttonhole...and it is a perfect buttonhole. There is also a k1, p1 rib with neat, even stitches; easy wrapping for clusters once, twice, and thrice; knitting backwards with two colors—never purl fair isle again. Others hints which are more or less arcane.
