Resident Spotlight: Florence R.

Florence R. was born in Manhattan, New York and grew up on the lower east side. She was one of two daughters and remembers being very close with her younger sister, Harriet. Her mother was always willing to lend a helping hand to their neighbors. In fact, her mother and grandmother were great sewing operators and repaired clothing and other items. Her father was rather strict and he liked things a certain way. On his days off he liked having breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the same exact time each day. No matter where they were, they had to be home by 5 p.m. so the family could eat dinner together. If they went out after dinner they had to be back and in bed by 8:30 – 9 p.m. or else he’d lean out the window and let out a distinct whistle. She and all her friends knew the whistle and if they heard it they all immediately dispersed. Florence and her sister liked to hang out with their friends participating in fun activities, such as dancing, going to the movies, venturing out to the parks in the Bronx or taking the ferry out to Staten Island. She recalls hanging out with other girls as they read, knitted or talked in the park, but what she enjoyed most was dancing. After graduating high school, Florence went straight to work as a bookkeeper for lithographers in Williamsburg in Brooklyn. They were one of the biggest lithographers on the east coast back then, they made cigar bands and box labels. She did bookkeeping by hand, and then moved over to the bookkeeping machine when they came out. She was great with figures and is still as sharp when it comes

to numbers today. She worked there for 7 years before she got married. Florence met her first husband, Sam in the Pocono Mountains. They met on the dance floor. She loves to dance and recalls that he was a great dancer. They danced the whole week and although he was a bit older than she, they married. She moved to Philadelphia where he lived and he worked as a detective with the police department. They had three daughters together, Sheryl, Joyce, and Deborah. The girls never gave them any trouble and she enjoyed raising them. She also cherishes the trip they took to Japan, which was one of her favorites. After 30 years of marriage, Sam passed away. Florence continued living in their home with her youngest daughter, Deborah, before she married. Four years later, Florence married her second husband, Robert, whom she met after his sister-in-law saw her at a wedding and knew she needed to introduce the two. Robert had recently lost his first wife and had five children of his own. He worked in his family’s furniture business as a furniture dealer with his four brothers. This was a business started by his father who came from Europe to Philadelphia to open his furniture store. Robert also served in the Navy as a young man. They did a bit of traveling to Canada and also went on a few cruises together. The two were married for 20.5 years before he passed away. Florence’s sister, Harriet, moved out to California with her husband when her children were still tiny. They worked for Florence’s best friend’s husband’s air condition and heating company. Harriet worked in the office routing the men to fix and install air

Assisted Living Vs. Nursing HomesDo you know what to consider when seeking senior living options?

When looking into senior living, is there any difference between assisted living and nursing homes? Yes, there are many factors to consider when determining which living option is right for your loved one. Living Accommodations: The living accommodations are vastly different between these senior living options. Assisted living communities do vary themselves in apartment options, but also activities and amenities. Living options offer self-furnished, private apartments. However, some assisted living communities offer options for residents to share with their spouse or friend. There’s also a strong focus on community involvement and socialization through the various activities offered. Nursing homes, on the other hand, offer more of a hospital-setting for rooms, and residents usually share rooms. Activities are not the main focus in nursing homes as residents often have more serious medical issues, and may be unable to participate. Care Needs: In assisted living, residents usually do not have the need for constant supervision as they are more independent. However, the staff is available 24-hours a day in case of an emergency. Residents may require some help in accomplishing activities of daily living, but their medical needs are taken care of with their primary care physician or in a hospital. Some assisted living communities operate with a resident nurse on-site, but are not medically-licensed facilities.

Nursing homes provide around the clock care for residents who have serious physical and mental health issues on a short or long-term basis. Some residents may need rehabilitation as they heal from injuries or illness, and they can also do this in a nursing home. Payment Options: Cost for assisted living vary on the apartment size and a resident’s level of care needs. As previously mentioned, assisted living communities are not medically-licensed, therefore care services cannot be billed to health insurance, Medicaid or Medicare. However, private pay, long-term care insurance and Veteran’s Aid & Attendance are viable payment options for those in assisted living. If you’re a veteran or surviving spouse of a veteran, be sure to visit the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for more information. Payment options are similar for nursing homes; however, some facilities are approved by Medicaid and Medicare and can bill accordingly. Need more guidance on what is a good option for your loved one? We’re happy to help. Call today to learn more about assisted living options at Renaissance Villages.
