DIRECTOR ’S NOTES

I was lucky enough to see HONOUR at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California in 2009 and came away impressed by the skill and depth of the play’s exploration of an age-old theme: infidelity and marriage. The subject has been approached in theater again and again in many different eras and styles, from Greek classics to Restoration drama to contemporary times. What is so strong and unusual about HONOUR, I believe, is its nuanced and deep examination of all the characters involved: wife, husband, lover, and daughter. The best I can do to honor this play is quote an interview with its playwright, Joanna Murray-Smith.

I was interested in this woman [Honor], a cultivated, intelligent woman who has willingly sacrificed her own aspirations in order to nurture her husband and child. I was moved by the idea of her being abandoned just at the point in her life when she ought to be reaping the rewards of those sacrifices. I was fascinated by how much wisdom the witness to ambition must be…to have watched her husband ascend, to watch her child come into herself…The mother is the receiver of so much information about human beings, their strengths and follies. And yet so often, these remarkable women are left and have to begin their lives again…

I soon found that the only way this story could really be interesting and moving would be if the audience understood the motivations of all of the characters. I strenuously wanted to avoid painting Honor as the only victim and Gus as a facile, vain bastard. I also didn’t want the girl to be a bimbo. I thought: how interesting it would be if the audience could move through the play experiencing the competing feelings of all of the characters. Only if this succeeded would the tragedy of the story come through. I didn’t want the audience to have a simple moral position confirmed on leaving the theatre. I wanted them to feel how confusing life is…how there are no simple villains or victims…and how even when we understand what the right way to behave is, we are nevertheless often compelled to behave badly. The theme of the clash between the heart and the head is somewhere in everything I write. I find the insufficiencies of ideology endlessly interesting territory.

Go ahead, take a bow.(You’ve earned it.)

Joanna Murray-Smith (Playwright) Joanna Murray-Smith is a Melbourne based playwright, screenwriter and novelist. Her plays, which include

HONOUR, RAPTURE, BOMBSHELLS, NIGHTFALL, REDEMPTION, LOVE CHILD and FLAME, have been produced around the world. HONOUR has been produced in over two dozen countries, including productions on Broadway and at the National Theatre in London and most recently in the West End. Both HONOUR and RAPTURE won the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Best Play. Most recently, Melbourne Theatre Company produced THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES. Joanna has also published three novels Truce, Judgement Rock and Sunnyside.

Marie Kohler (Director) Marie has directed A PHOENIX TOO FREQUENT (2002) for Renaissance, as well as readings of IMPORTANCE OF

BEING ERNEST and BUS STOP. She is also a Co-Artistic Director and Playwright-in-Residence for the company and has written four plays produced by Renaissance: COUNTING DAYS, MIDNIGHT AND MOLL FLANDERS, BOSWELL’S DREAMS and THE DIG. Marie is proud to have been named “Artist of the Year” by the Milwaukee Arts’ Board in 2005. She is also proud to be wife to Brain Mani, mother to three daughters and grandmother to six. Marie would like to dedicate her work in HONOUR to the wonderful Renaissance staff.

Karen Estrada (Sophie) Karen is thrilled and overawed to return to Renaissance for HONOUR. She was last seen as Molly in THE SMELL OF THE

KILL. Karen just finished a run of SONG

AND DANCE MAN with Sunset Playhouse’s Bug in a Rug series where she was also in GOODNIGHT LULU, SWITCH WITCH, and CAPS FOR SALE. She was recently seen at First Stage Theater in SEUSSICAL and previously with First Stage’s charming First Steps series in AESOP’S FABLES and GIGGLE, GIGGLE, QUACK. Karen has also had the privilege of having worked with Milwaukee Chamber Theater in CRIMES OF THE HEART, In Tandem Theater in YOU’RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN and STUCK, sketch comedy troupe The Show and Bunny Gumbo’s Combat Theater. This Christmas season also saw her debut with the WOMEN WHO CAN’T SING cabaret at Next Act Theater. She is proud to be a lead teacher for Next Act’s summer Next Actors program for teens. Karen has performed with Skylight’s KidWrites program and will be seen for the first time on Skylight’s mainstage in SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE. Thanks to the smart, funny and impassioned ladies who run this company.

Laura Gordon (Honor) Laura is thrilled to be working with her friends at Renaissance. She has directed SKIN TIGHT, MEMORY HOUSE, and

FULL GALLOP (2006) for the company but HONOUR marks her first time working here as an actor. She has been a member of the resident acting company at the Milwaukee Rep since 1993 where she has performed such roles as Linda Loman in DEATH OF A SALESMAN, Ann Landers in THE LADY WITH ALL THE ANSWERS, Sister Aloysius in DOUBT, Maureen in THE BEAUTY QUEEN OF LEENANE and Queen Elizabeth I in MARY STUART. Most recently she directed Sarah Ruhl’s IN THE NEXT ROOM (or THE VIBRATOR PLAY) for Actors Theatre of Louisville and the Milwaukee Rep and THE WINTER’S TALE for the Utah Shakespeare Festival. She is a recipient of a 2010 Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship and is married to actor Jonathan Smoots.

Brian Mani (Gus) Brian is happy to be back with Renaissance Theaterworks for the seventh time. His most recent productions with

Renaissance were BLACKBIRD in 2010, and THE DIG in 2009, along with BOSWELL’S DREAMS, MIDNIGHT AND MOLL FLANDERS, ZARA SPOOK AND OTHER LURES, and COUNTING DAYS. Brian is a core company actor with American Players Theatre and will be performing in his 14th season with them this coming summer. Some featured roles at APT include Lennie in OF MICE AND MEN, Pozzo in WAITING FOR GODOT, Sartorius in WIDOWER’S HOUSES, Falstaff in HENRY IV: THE MAKING OF A KING, and Lord Timon in TIMON OF ATHENs. Brian has also been seen many times at the Milwaukee Chamber Theater over the last two decades, most recently as King Henry II in THE LION IN WINTER last spring and Harry in THE SUM OF US in 2009. Although Brian and his wife, Marie Kohler, have acted together many times and he has performed in four plays she’s written, this will be the first time he will be directed by her.

Greta Wohlrabe (Claudia) Greta is thrilled to be making her debut with Renaissance Theaterworks. As a Navy “brat” she has lived all over the

world, including California, Wales, Maine and Japan. She received her B.A from Wheaton College in Maine and her M.F.A. in Acting from Purdue University. Last year she spent an amazing nine months as an Acting Intern with Milwaukee Repertory Theater. During this time she had the privilege of understudying Laura Gordon; so now, to get to act alongside of her, is a dream come true. This past summer, she was an Acting Apprentice at American Players Theatre appearing in THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, THE CRITIC and THE TEMPEST. She will be returning to

APT this season as Maria in TWELFTH NIGHT, Kyra in SKYLIGHT (with Brian Mani), and Cassandra in TROILUS AND CRESSIDA. She would love to thank the very talented ladies of Renaissance for giving her this opportunity, her family for loving and supporting her unconditionally and God for all of His blessings.

Victoria DeIorio (Original Music and Sound Design) Victoria is thrilled to be working with Renaissance again after AMERICAN FIESTA and THE PERSIANS. Off-Broadway credits: CASSIE’S WOOLEY’S CHIMERA at Joe’s Pub, THE BLUEST EYE with Steppenwolf Theatre at the Duke Theatre, and OPHELIA at The Connelly. Production credits: The Goodman Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre, Victory Gardens Theatre, Northlight Theatre, Writers’ Theatre, The Next, Florida Stage, Peninsula Players, Cleveland Playhouse, Syracuse Stage, Center Stage, Chautauqua Theatre Company, Indiana Repertory, Milwaukee Shakespeare, Milwaukee Rep, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, and many other theatres in and around Chicago, NY, and LA. She has been nominated for 10 and has received 6 Joseph Jefferson Awards, as well as 2 After Dark Awards. She is the head of Sound Design for The Theatre School at DePaul University. For more information visit www.victoria-sound-design.com.

Jason Fassl (Lighting Design) This marks Jason’s fifteenth lighting design with Renaissance, and he is glad to be working again with his favorite team of co-conspirators. Favorite Renaissance designs include SKIN TIGHT, WOMAN IN BLACK, BLACKBIRD and last season’s IN ACTING SHAKESPEARE. For the last ten seasons, Jason has designed lighting for over three hundred theatrical productions across this state of cheese. He is an Artistic Associate for First Stage Children’s Theatre and the Resident Designer for The Fireside Dinner Theatre. Jason’s designs have been seen on the stages of The Milwaukee Ballet, The Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Skylight Music Theatre, American Players Theatre, Peninsula Players, Next Act Theatre, Forward Theatre Company, Milwaukee

Chamber Theatre, Lawrence University, The Madison Repertory Theatre and Youngblood Theatre Company, among many others. Jason is a proud BFA graduate of UW - Stevens Point and a member of United Scenic Artists Local 829. Many thanks to the RTW Ladies, Holly, Toy and Nathan for all the great time we’ve shared in the dark. www.AntiShadows.com

Brandy Kline (Stage Manager) Brandy is glad to join Renaissance Theaterworks for her fourth season as Stage Manager while also working as Production Manager/Company Manager for Milwaukee Chamber Theatre. Brandy has worked in various capacities of stage management, props and stage crew for Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Bialystock & Bloom, Renaissance Theaterworks, Next Act Theatre, Skylight Music Theatre, Milwaukee Shakespeare, Alverno College and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. After

receiving a B.A. in Theatre from Lawrence University, she studied stage management and props at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre and spent a summer as production assistant at the Utah Shakespearean Festival. In her spare time she has worked at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Spoleto Festival USA.

Jennifer Lyons (Props Design) Jennifer feels pretty darned fortunate to be working with such a talented bunch for Renaissance Theaterworks once again. In the past, Jen has had the pleasure of co-designing props for MEMORY HOUSE, THE SMELL OF THE KILL, and CRUMBS FROM THE TABLE OF JOY (Renaissance Theaterworks) as well as JOE EGG (Milwaukee Chamber Theatre). She designed props for many a show for Bialystock and Bloom back in the day and continues to spend her days in the prop shop at Skylight Music Theatre.

Anthony Lyons (Technical Director) This production marks Anthony’s fifth full year as Technical Director for Renaissance Theaterworks. In all, he has worked in various capacities on twenty-two Renaissance productions. Past credits include: light board operator for IMAGINING BRAD and TALKING WITH; Master Electrician for SYRINGA TREE (remount), SYNCOPATION, and FULL GALLOP (second mounting); He has been Technical Director for all productions from STRING OF PEARLS to the present. Anthony has worked for Skylight MusicTheatre, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, and Bialystock & Bloom (R.I.P.). Anthony is also Technical Director for Wild Space Dance Company and Danceworks Performance Company. In a parallel universe, Anthony is a partner in a small custom carpentry firm.

Holly Payne (Costume Design) Holly is delighted to join Renaissance and its troupe of lovely ladies for another fine production. Currently the Costume Director at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, she graduated with an M.F.A. in Costume Design and Technology from the University of Arkansas. She has designed at American Players Theatre, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Florentine Opera, Skylight Music Theatre, Milwaukee Shakespeare, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Delaware Stage Company, 11th Hour Theater in Philadelphia, Professional Theatre Training Program at the University of Delaware, University of Tulsa and Theatre Squared in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She loves working with this fantastic, charming group of theater folk. Special thanks to Aaron for being kind and good-looking.

Nathan Stuber (Scenic Design) This will be Nate’s sixth design with RTW. Nate lives in Spring Green and works at American Players Theatre where his job title is constantly in flux and often contains the disclaimer: “...and duties as assigned.” When not participating in this S&M role play that we call theatre he tends to be running, reading or injuring himself with rusty

metal, fire or saw blades... mostly unintentional. He would like to thank Tony, Jen and Andrea for making him look vaguely competent when he works in Milwaukee. Also thanks to Scurrie for a wonderful life of autonomy and support. Long enough, Sarah?

Suzan Fete (Co-Artistic Director/Movement Coach) Suzan co-founded Renaissance Theaterworks (RTW) in 1993. She is a past president of the

Board and currently serves as Co-Artistic Director. Suzan has over 20 years experience as an actor, director, and producer in professional theater. Past directing projects for RTW include TOPDOG/UNDERDOG, THE SHAPE OF THINGS, SPINNING INTO BUTTER, ELEEMOSYNARY, DAYTRIPS, A DIFFERENT MOON, FAT PIG, BLACKBIRD and REASONS TO BE PRETTY. In January, Suzan directed RTW’s production of NEAT by Charlayne Woodard. Suzan lives in Wauwatosa with her husband Jeff and son Matthew.

Jennifer Rupp (Co-Artistic Director) Jennifer is Co-Founder and Co-Artistic Director of Renaissance Theaterworks. As an actress, her credits

include productions with Renaissance Theaterworks, Next Act Theatre, First Stage, Bialystock & Bloom, Boulevard Ensemble, Theatre Gigante, Madison Repertory, and Children’s Theater of Madison. Ms. Rupp is a co-creator of the RED PEPPER JELLY musicals, original shows written and performed by local Milwaukee artists and produced by Renaissance. Jennifer also works with her husband, Dick Chudnow, and son, Nick Chudnow, as the Business Manager for ComedySportz Milwaukee.

GREEN ROOM GROUP — NEW LEVELS AND BENEF ITS !

Our Green Room Group is a collection of our major individual donors. When these generous souls contribute $1,000 or more annually, they become members of this fun, exclusive group. Yes, it takes some “green stuff” to join, but the Green Room is the place to be. Historically, the Green Room was where the actors waited before going on to perform, the insider’s lounge, if you will - simply a room painted green. The RTW Green Room is a metaphorical rather than a literal place, made “green” by its members’ pledges of support.

As a Green Room Group member you can make a huge difference in the success of RTW. You enable RTW to hire the finest actors and directors who bring us extraordinary performances. There are more benefits to Green Room Group membership including special invitations to exclusive events. If you appreciate the work we do and want to become a part of it, now is the time to contribute.
