year filled with heart-warming fare, delicious hot drinks and precious memories—is just around the corner. So hopefully your gourds and squashes are planted, sprouted and thriving in your gardens so they’ll be ready for all of the pumpkin carving and baking we have to look forward to this harvest and holiday season.

But wait! You know what makes that time of year even more special? Hunting for that special piece or perfect gift that makes our home feel warm and cozy, an inviting gathering place for family and friends.

Come fall, we’ll be marrying the thrill of the hunt and the celebration of reaping plentifully for the Hunt & Gather Harvest at the October 2012 Remnants of the Past Vintage Show. I invite you to come and share in our celebration of all things antique and vintage, salvaged and reimagined!

From Friday, October 19 to Sunday, October 21, over 75 vendors from across the nation will gather in the heart of California’s beautiful Central Coast at the Alex Madonna Expo Center in San Luis Obispo, California. These creative artisans will be purveying their artwork, handmade items and vintage and antique treasures from across the country and around the world. Our summer show drew almost 4,000 guests, and we expect our Hunt & Gather Harvest show to be just as bountiful!

The festivities will begin on Friday night with an early bird preview and shopping experience from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The entrance fee is $25 and includes advanced

shopping, your chance to benefit from our Secret Shopper Special Surprise (more on that below), plus admission to the show on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the gate opens at 9 a.m. with extended shopping hours until 6 p.m., and admission is just $10 (includea admission for Sunday). On Sunday the show starts at 9 a.m. ending at 3 p.m. with admission will cost $10 if you do not purchase a ticket Friday or Saturday.

Chalk FarmJennifer Rae Beck is one of

our newest vendors at the show. Her love for all things vintage started during her college years at garage sales. Eventually, she created her own store, Chalk Farm, named after the London Tube stop in Montclair, NJ. Now a resident of California, she opened her online store with a following of customers from all over the world, including many of Hollywood’s celebrity clientele.

or this October show, we are supporting United Way of San Luis Obispo County.

Funds raised from the show will go toward The Imagination Library, a special reading program created by Singer/Actress Dolly Parton, and managed locally by United Way.

Children enrolled in the program receive a new, age-appropriate book every month from birth to five years of age. The Imagination Library unlocks the magical world of books and gets children excited about reading before they enter kindergarten, while encouraging early literacy skills that will prepare them for future success. If a child can read at grade level by the time he or she is in fourth grade, they increase their chances of succeeding in middle school and graduating on-time from high school. x

eople have asked about the angel and why he shows up everywhere in our graphics. Well,

it’s time that I tell the story.Do you ever wonder why you love old dog-eared

things? I think we innately know that most pieces we find have a unique story to tell. We know someone once treasured the item, and through the years it may have been passed down to someone who didn’t value it and sold it in a garage or estate sale, or just threw it out. Sometimes we rescue a piece from oblivion, saving it from the garbage dump to be forgotten forever. The defects in an item provide hints to its stories, perhaps symbolizing hardships in our own lives.

I discovered a find like that, one of my most wonderful finds actually, from an excursion to Santa Barbara 15 years ago. I was invited to a special early showing of an antique sale. Several ladies organized the event after traveling all over the country for antiques and vintage pieces. (If you love this pastime, you will get to know the most incredible people who share the same passions. It really is a marvelous community filled with creativity and inspiration.)

As I was chatting with one of my fellow hunters while waiting in line before the gates opened, I could see in the distance a hand-carved wooden piece. I didn’t know what it was exactly, but I had a hunch that it would be unique and amazing. When that gate opened, I made a beeline to the mysterious item. As I approached, I was delighted to see a darling, little wooden angel, carved by a talented

artist. I picked it up, his little precious face drawing me in… Then I noticed his wings were broken off. The thought process began: Should I get it with the broken wings? Will my husband Stephen like this for Christmas? He does love hand-carved figurines. Hmm, shall I get it or not?

You all know the No. 1 rule in treasure hunting, right? Do NOT let an object you are interested in out of your hands or someone else will invariably scoop it up as soon as you put it down. So I held on tight.

As I held this sweet angel in my hands, I saw the story in its brokenness. Life’s trials can break us spiritually, physically and emotionally. But it is these trials that help to define us, making us uniquely who we are. The hope is that in time we can be restored and made stronger so we can get through the next trial and, with grace, have more compassion for others. I knew at that moment my husband would love the angel and see the same story. Our little broken-winged angel has a special place in our foyer and greets family and friends every time they walk into our home. Thanks to the wonderful ladies who rescued this little guy and brought him to Santa Barbara 15 years ago so that he could find a new home with our family and teach us the purpose found in trials. It has great meaning and value for me and Stephen.

So to answer the question about the ever-present angel: He is there to welcome you and symbolize my hope that you would find a treasure you will love, one with a precious story to tell. Enjoy the show! t

Directions: In a stockpot over medium/high heat, melt butter and saute onion, carrots, apples, roasted pumpkin, and thyme until tender, about 8 to 10 minutes. Purée in a food processor or blender. Return the puree to the stockpot, add the chicken stock and simmer for 15 minutes. Then add the cream, brown sugar, cinnamon and ginger. Simmer for 10 more minutes (do not boil). Season, to taste, with salt and pepper.

Divide soup among 6 soup bowls and serve immediately. Optional: garnish with pumpkin seeds, a dollop of crème fraîche or a sprig of fresh herb.

Roasted Pumpkin: Use sugar pie, baby bear or cheese pumpkins. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Cut whole pumpkin in half and then cut each half into several pieces. Discard seeds or reserve for another use. Place pumpkin on a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil, and season with salt and pepper. Roast in oven until tender but not falling apart, about 30 to 40 minutes. Let cool, peel away skin, and dice.

Paso Robles and Templeton boast of their wine industry, but they are not void of great shops to find great treasures! Start at Reminisce on Pine St. in Paso Robles. Then go next door to Two Susans' Antiques. Just one door over, you'll find The Cottage Antiques. Head south on 101 and exit Hwy 46 W. Turn Right on Ramada Dr. and head south. Turn west on Marquita Avenue. Take the first right on La Cruz and find American Barn & Wood.

Head south on Ramada Dr. towards Templeton. Merge onto Main St. and stop by Anthology Boutique.

From Hwy 101, exit Hwy 58 and head east toward town and visit The Barn. This quiet rustic town will take you back in time. If you're feeling adventurous book your reservation with Margarita Adventures Zipline Canopy Tours. For a more relaxing activity, visit Ancient Peaks Winery Tasting Room just down the road from The Barn.
