Remington’s Spring Break Visit to the Dominican Republic

Though I am only 17 years old, I have acquired lots of knowledge about the world we inhabit. Most perplexing to me are the para-doxes that one finds on earth. Before I went to the Dominican Republic, I thought I had a general idea of what poverty was. When I arrived in my town of Arroyo Grande, I soon realized that all my preconceived notions of poverty were outright false. I saw shacks constructed of rotting, wooden boards or of scrap metal sheeting. People had no trash collector or dump so they would just throw their garbage to the side of the road. What became interesting to me though amidst the villagers is that although they lived in penury, they were wealthy in the heart and mind. There was not one moment where a passing vil-lager did not wish me a good day. There was not one person who was ever unhappy, even when I was there, I did not even hear a young child cry. To me this was completely surreal, but the balance between economic poverty and wealth of the heart aroused my curiosity and I began to reflect on my own experi-ence in the U.S. What I concluded was that materialism blinds us from people and contentment; that materialism is avaricious and divides people because in America we are so cynical. When we are given something, we generally take it for ourselves. Some-one told me a story in the D.R. that a man asked a boy in a class what he would do with a million dollars. The boy then asked his classmates, “what would WE do with a million dollars?” My trip taught me a valuable lesson of setting aside material goods and uplifting the people around me, how a simple smile given can light up the world of another. Father Joe’s Morning Ride: Memorial Day

Fort William Henry Harrison is home to the Veterans Administration Center in Helena, Montana. It is also the home to the State of Montana Veterans Memorial Cemetery. When I was in the Episcopal Diocese of Montana, I spent a lot of time at the "VA"...as it is informally known. I did a chaplaincy there and was honored to assist with the Crossing Ceremonies for quite a few of the Vets there...many of whom are friends and relatives. This weekend is Memorial Day. For many, it has simply become the opening gun of the race of the summer season...full of barbecues, beaches and graced by a 4-day weekend. But today I am asking you for a favor...something special....it will just take a minute. I ask you sometime in this long holiday weekend, as you are enjoying the joys of this place in which we live freely and safely....to take just a few minutes and offer a prayer of Thanksgiving and an Honor Prayer for our Veterans who have helped to make it happen. For those who have served, are serving and will serve we salute you. We thank you for your commitment and your willingness to stand in the breach and often face the unfaceable. To see what should not be seen, to endure, and to prevail...simply be-cause you made a promise that you would. For our Veteran Brothers and Sisters here at All Saints...we thank and honor you and your service on this most special of days. When I think back to my time at Fort William Henry Har-rison, I realize that the highest honor that we can pay to our fellow Veterans who have crossed, is to continue to live our lives as we served, with honor, dignity and cour-age. Blessings and Enjoy the Ride, Father Joe

From the Senior Warden Dear Friends, I have always been impressed and amazed at all the helping hands here at All Saints. When I was reading “Art and Liturgical Appointments” at All Saints, I was again struck by the talent and commitment of those who went before us. All the needlepoint (thank you Pat Stephens and friends) that we kneel on every Sunday, plus the lovely banners, not store bought, but handmade. The large cross over the altar with the smaller cross overlaid has been a favorite for its simplicity. To discover that the smaller one was the original and made by our first vicar, Rev. Ome Kellett gave me pause. Everyone is carrying on the traditions that began with our founding members. We are truly blessed. Spring equals gardens to me and since I am not much of a gardener, a friend gave me the following. Author Unknown

FOR A SPECIAL GARDEN First, plant five rows of peas:

Preparedness, promptness, perseverance, politeness and prayer.

Next to them, plant three rows of squash: Squash gossip, squash criticism, squash indifference.

Then five rows of lettuce:

Let us be faithful, let us be unselfish, let us be loyal, let us be truthful, let us love one another.

And no garden is complete without turnips:

Turn up for church, turn up with a smile, turn up with determination.

I try to work on both types of gardens! With joy and love, Vicki

What is a Junior Warden?

Is it associated with penal institutions? Masonic temples? A supervisory and enforcement position? Maybe it refers to a workhorse that is charged with getting things done. Well, whatever it is, I was elected to be one by the Bishop’s Committee on a day that I missed a meeting. (Just kidding.) When things need getting done in the way of maintenance to the church buildings or grounds, I ei-ther do them, or get others to get it done (however I usually wait until I’m screamed at 3 times be-fore I get moving). It is a fun job because I get to meet Fire Marshalls, inspectors, contractors, plumbers, electricians, and sometimes even police officers, usually in emergencies! Getting folks to assist me is often akin to pulling teeth—I had a one-week job as a dental assistant once, and felt a career calling, but the next week I peeled potatoes. You guessed it, at US Navy boot camp. Seriously though, once people know they have a kind of ownership here, they want to take care of the place. I hope this exciting job description generates a long list of candidates that can’t wait to relieve me of the position as I retire. Your Jr. Warden, John Stephenson
