From the Principal

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Easter Hat Parade, Easter Raffle and Tickets

Parent Club will once again run the Easter Egg Raffle in conjunction with the Easter Hat Parade on the last day of

Term 1. This is a whole school event and parents, grandparents, friends, aunties, uncles etc are most welcome to

attend. We would love some donations of Easter goodies to make up lots of great prizes. Donations can be left in

the collection box in the staffroom at anytime. We suggest that parents do not go to too much expense with the hats.

Usually the “best” hats are the ones that children have made themselves with some assistance from parents or older

siblings. Raffle books should have been sent home & extra books are available at the office. Tickets are 50 cents

each.

This event is always lots of fun and a great fundraiser for the school.

DRAMA AWARD Charlie N – 1/2 McClellan: for great group work and character voice projection during the reading of the script of

‘The Return of the Three Bears.’

LOTE AWARD Mia M – 5/6 Staley: Mia has completed not one but five learning goals in German so far this year. Gut gemacht.

HISTORY AWARD

Anabelle D – 5/6 Staley: Thankyou for showing high interest and engagement in our excursion this week. It was

great to see you make connections with your prior learning to Dja Dja Wurrung culture and history.

Well done and I hope you continue to enjoy Indigenous Studies!

There is no safe number of days for missing school. Every day counts. Week 8 of Term 1

93% total school wide attendance 97% school wide attendance (not including absences relating to illness or medical)

There were 50 late arrives in Week 8. The TOP CLASSES for arrival time for the week were:

5/6 Staley & 5/6 Daenke (Perfect arrival time record for the week).

School Council Membership

I’m pleased to advise the school community that our School Council welcomes two new parent members; Mrs Kate

Edwards and Mr Brian Anderson. I’m sure Kate and Brian will be valuable contributors to our school and

community. Special thanks to Mrs Fiona Martin, Mrs Sue Gentry and Mrs Trinity Sanderson for their important

contribution to School Council. Special thanks to Fiona for taking on the role of School Council President during

the last four years. Fiona’s regular ‘catchups’ and overall support has been greatly appreciated during this time.

2020 Enrolments

In managing new enrolments, the school is required to adhere to state-wide enrolment placement policy and

processes, whereby eligible students have a right to be placed in their designated neighbourhood school.

The designated neighbourhood school is defined as the school that is nearest to the student’s permanent residential

address, measured in a straight line from the residence.

Students living outside the designated neighbourhood may still apply for enrolment, with remaining places to be

allocated in the following order:

1. Students for whom the school is the designated neighbourhood school.

2. Students with a sibling at the same permanent address who are attending the school at the same time.

3. All other students in order of closeness of their home to the school.

4. In exceptional circumstances, upon compassionate grounds.

Enrolment packs will be available at the beginning of next term.

Professional Practice Days

From the commencement of the 2018 school year, each teacher in Victoria became entitled to one day per term

(four days per year) release from their scheduled duties, including teaching, to focus on the improved delivery of

high quality teaching and learning. These days are in addition to existing pupil free days and pro-rata for a teacher

employed part-time.

The work undertaken on these days will be consistent with Departmental and school priorities and selected from the

following areas - planning, preparation, assessment of student learning, collaboration, curriculum

development, relevant professional development and peer observation including feedback and reflection.

During these days your children’s class will be covered by Casual Relief staff. The four professional practice days

will create opportunities for teachers by increasing time available to focus, reflect on and improve their practice and

to have the opportunity to engage in purposeful collaboration so as to impact student learning.

Early School Finish End of Term Term 1 concludes on Friday, 5th April. Students will be dismissed at 2.30pm. An assembly is scheduled for 2.15pm

on the Friday and students will be dismissed from the assembly area. The bus will be collecting the children an hour

earlier on this day, so parents can expect their child to be dropped off at their bus stop an hour earlier than normal.

Term 2 commences on Tuesday, 23rd April.

Collecting Plastic Bottle Caps – Can You Help?

We have teamed up with Envision Employment Services to support a good cause. Every year millions of

plastic bottlecaps end up in landfill. As reported on the ABC’s ‘War on Waste’ these caps fall through

the machines that process plastics for recycling. They can be used to make filaments for 3D printers or

remoulded for other goods, such as prosthetic limbs. Please feel free to drop your plastic bottle caps

off at the office. See the poster at the end of the newsletter for more information. https://envision.org.au/

RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS

Personal Strengths

This week in Respectful Relationships we have been learning about Personal Strengths. Our activity

focused on being kind and brave, and what this looks like. We discussed how it feels when someone is

kind to you, and how it is important to be kind to others so that they feel like that too. Watching ‘Rose

meets Mr Wintergarten’ to reflect on characters showed us an example of how being kind to someone

can make them happier and make their day. The Preps have been very proud of their own acts of

kindness they have been showing in the classroom and in the yard!

National Ride2School Day Friday 22 March

National Ride2School Day - Friday 22 March

Tomorrow is National Ride2School Day – a special day to celebrate active travel to school whether it’s riding,

walking, scooting, unicycling or even skating. Our weekly HandsUp! count will be tomorrow instead of Wednesday

for this week – be in it for your class!

Part way is OK – enjoy the walk!

Not sure about walking or riding to school? Ride2School Day is a perfect opportunity to dip your toe in. Try

parking at Stanley Avenue (between Retreat and Spring Gully Roads) and enjoy a shady 10-minute walk or scoot

together. Why not organise to meet other families and walk together? (The cricket oval is another option.) There’s

plenty of parking at Stanley Avenue, so leave the car there in the afternoon and avoid the traffic crush around the

school gates (it’s probably quicker than arriving at school early for a carpark!) And you might be surprised what a

difference that 10-minute walk after school makes to family harmony.

Matthew, Emily and Jordan love riding to school!

General

Recyclying at Spring Gully P.S

Did you know that the students of 3/4 Garmey are recycling superheroes? Every Monday afternoon they collect the

school's soft plastic waste ready to be dropped off at the supermarket. This means that muesli bar wrappers, chip

packets, glad wrap and zip pick bags do not end up in landfill but instead are transformed into products such as our

new decking!

Parent Club News

Easter We are kindly asking for prize donations for our annual Easter Raffle. A small Easter Egg, or anything you think

you. Raffle tickets will be sent home very soon.
