D irections for P laying the UkuleleBy Zarh Myron Bickford

TUNING THE UKULELE

(Pronounced 00 - koo -lal/-law

The strings, from the.firs t to the.four thjrIght toJeft),.are_named_B,Esharp, Dand A, and are tuned to the correspon dingletters onthe piano, as illustrated below. This system of naming the strings is knownas the "Dtuning~andis adv.i s ed in

preference.tothe.other tuning,which makes th e.Iowe st.atr ing.Ccand the others correspondingly lower. The Dtunin g

has been adopted by the best writers and teachers as being preferable.

J

To.avci d confusion in the location of notes and the. reading of chords, all notes which are to be made on the fourth string (A )willbewritten anoctave lower than they actually sound, thus always appearing as the lowest notes ofthe chords (when four

notes are used).

The following diagram shows all the notes and their location onthe staff and the fingerboard, as far as the twelfth fret oneach

string.

Where two different notes.are.shown.at one fret itindicates that they sound the same. The small notes represented on tho

fourth string showthe actual pitch, while the lower octave shows the way they will appear onthe staff. In making the notes, the

fingers are placedjust back ofthe frets, touching them, but not reaching over. •

HOLDING THE INSTRUMENT

(The position of the instrument, hands, etc., is shown in the cut on the first page).

The right forearm presses lightly againstthe body of the instrument, sothat it can be held inplace either in the sitting or stand-

ing position.

The neck must rest very lightly against the ball of the left thumb andjust above the thirdjoint of the first finger, the tip of the

rhumb never appearing above the edge of the fingerboard, and inmany cases being placed almost inthe center of the back ofth«

neck. The tips of the fingers must be used in holding down the strings, the joints being well rounded and the nails kept rather

short, to avoid touching the strings.

Since the object of this preliminary matter is merely to explain the ground actually covered inthe songs whichfollow, much

rudimentary matter is necessarily omitted and.it.is taken for granted that those who procure the Folio, either for study or for

pleasure, already have,or can easily obtain the.necessary rudiments covering time values of notes, signatures of keys, the

use of sharps, flats, naturals and the various signs and terms used in musical notation.

The chromatic scale progresses by half steps or semi-tones and the above example shows the method of crossing to the next

higher string whenithas been reached, rather than continuing oneither the Dor the Fsharp string.

Inthe Dseale the sharps placed onFandC at the beginning indicate that these two sharps are required in thisscaleor key, con-

sequentlythese letters must always be sharped, no matter inwhat octave they appear.Thesescales are invaluable inlearning the

fingerboard andthe location of the notes and itis suggested that the general rule ofusing the first finger for the first fret, second

finger_forthesecondJret;etc., be followed. In playing the higher notes, itis ofcourse necessary to change the position ofthe hand.

Ageneral rule for picking single notes is touse the thumb forthethird.andfourthstrings, the first finger forthe secondstring

andthe secondfingerforthe first string, although this rule is fre€J_uentlyvaried in actual playing.

FINGERING

Owingtothe peculiar tuning ofthe ukulele and the fact that the notes tobe made onthe fourth string are written an 0ct ave

lowerthan they actua11y sound, in a chord offour notes (the usual form),the highest note will always be found on the first string

(B), the next lower note onthe second string, the third from thetop. onthe third. string and the lowest note on the fourth string.

Inmarking the chords and notes throughout the book, the figures always refer to the left hand fingers andnot to the frets, un-

less they may happen to correspond ..As an illustration of this ,the las t chord shown below, knownas a dimrnished seventh chord,

is made by placing the fourth finger on the high D, the second finger onthe Gsharp, the third finger OilF (naturayand the first

finger ontheB. (This is also the chord which is being takenin the line cut shown at the beginning)

• Itwill be seen that it is necessary to actua11y know the notes and their location inorder tofind a11the chords used in thi s

Folio, some of which are unusual and unfamiliar.

I I

THE STROKES

Although there are several different strokes used for certain effects inplaying the ukulele, these accompaniments have been

confined to the common stroke, made with the first finger only and tothe downward roll or slide.

The right hand is held in avery loose and relaxed condition, as shown inthe cut,the first finger being slightly straightened out

from the others. .

Inmaking the down stroke (awayfrom the body), the nail of the finger brushes the strings lightly, while inthe up strokethefleshy

part only isused.

riis most essential that the arm, wrist and fingers be held perfectly relaxed inorderto produce the best results. T'b e down

strokes are indicated by the sign i1and up strokes by II.The roll is made byusingthe nails ofall four fingers, making a slightturn

ofthe wrist andstraighteningthe fingers slightly. The thumb can also followthe fingers across the strings if desirable.

The ro11willbe indicat ed by the sign f. Throughout the Folio.thestrok es have been marke d atthe beginning 0f each pie ce andwher-

ever any changes occur.

THE PRINCIPAL CHORDS IN COMMON KEYS

Inusing the diagrams orupi cture s ' toillustrat ethese chords, the fact must not be lost sight of that the only sys tern 0f reading

that is recommended isthe note system, the diagrams being used merely to assist the eye and because a certain percentage of

players are familiar with this system. The names ofthe chords are given underneath, but it should be noted that there are many

chords used inthe accompaniments which are not shown beiow, owing to the fact that one ofthe notes (usually the highest) belongs

tothe melody and is not a part of the chord inits usual position. These exceptions must always be worked out according tothe

rule given previously and the exact fingering fo11owed.

The keyofD is given first, since this is the natural key of the instrument andits chords lay most naturally under the fingers.

The keys fo11owing are given in the order of their'naturalness" or congeniality tothe instrument.

Althoughoccasional chords belonging to other keys will be used, it is not deemed nece ssary to illustrate further keys

or scalesin this work.

RIGHT HAND FINGERING

Itis frequently necessaryor advisable toplay either single notes, ortwo or three together, instead ofthe full chord of four

notes, and for this purpose it is necessary to pick the strings with the fingers instead of making the stroke. Two dots in-

dicate the second finger, one dot the first finger and "-t ! ' the thumb. When the strings are picked in this manner, the little

finger should rest lightly on the body ofthe instrument, nearthe sound hole, the thumb extending forward towardthe finger-board. •

IIisbelieved that sufficient examples havebeen given to showthe method offinding the chords, and inthe case ofthose whichhavenot been Il-

lustratedbythe diagrams, itis onlynecessary tolook for the highest note onthe first string, the next onthe second string, the third note fromthetop onthe third string andthe lowest note onthe fourth string. '

Thecompiler makes nopretenttons as toa complete methodof instruction, since this would beoutside the scope ofthework. The matter intr o-

ducedis merely what itis necessary toknow inorder tobe able toplay the various accompaniments. It is suggested that the best andonlycorrect

waytoplay this, oranyother instrument, isbynote, andthat the diagrams be referredto only as a last resort inlocating the various notes and

chords. The names ofthe strings andtheactual location ofthe notes madeoneach string should bememorized andthe chords always read bynote, rather than by name or diagram.
