Working Bee this Sunday 9-12pm

The Clifton Springs Primary School Environment Committee are hosting a working bee this Sunday from

9-12pm at Clifton Springs Primary School. The key task for the day will be to clear and then refill the

mulch in the school junior playgrounds and then a general tidy up around the school. While the heavy

lifting will be done by machine, we still need plenty of people on hand to spread it out and to wheelbarrow

things to the places they need to be. Remember if you participate in the working bee you will have the

Grounds/Maintenance fee reimbursed to you for helping on the day.

I look forward to seeing you here on the day. There will be some programs for children inside and a BBQ

lunch provided. See you here!

Clifton Springs has Got Talent!

The day of our first Auditions finally arrived today with student in years Prep – Year 4 getting to perform in

the gym in front of their peer group. There was a very eclectic mix of performances today with student acts

including everything from drumming and singing to joke telling and dancing. I wanted to thank all those

students who participated today and to our parents who could come along. Mr Jones now has the very

hard task of choosing which acts will go through to the performance showcase on Thursday December 8th .

Well done everyone and I look forward to seeing your performances at the showcase in the near future.

The Year 5/6 students have their auditions tomorrow at 11.50-1pm.

ICT Making a difference

Thanks to Miss Palmer who last week took a group of our tech leaders along to the Making a Difference

event at the Geelong Library. The sessions were centred around exploration and then student problem

solving as part of an ICT challenge. (see the article in the newsletter for more)

Remembrance Day

Many thanks to Ms Hales and the School Captains who represented our school at the Drysdale

Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Cenotaph in Drysdale. The day was hosted by the RSL and the

students got to share some of their insights into Remembrance Day with the RSL Branch members.

Transition Session

Tomorrow night we will be hosting another Parent Information Session for our incoming prep parents who

were not able to attend the session last Wednesday. Tomorrow night’s session will be presented by Mr

McCredden with the assistance of the Prep team. The session begins at 6:00pm and will conclude by

approximately7:00pm.

2017 Class structures.

We are currently looking at our class structures for 2017. The 2017 Class Placement Policy was included

in the newsletter of October 25th and as you will have read, careful consideration is given when placing

students into classes. While we don’t necessarily take parent requests, if a parent has a pertinent point

they feel should be considered (on an educational basis), they are able to put a submission in writing to

the office. While written submissions may be considered, it does not in any way guarantee that these

requests will be met.

School Council Meeting Tonight

Tonight we will be holding our November meeting for the Clifton Springs Primary School Council. I look

forward to seeing all councillors in attendance and would like to officially welcome Sam Dellamarta who

has filled a casual vacancy.

Year 6 Blue Light Disco

Next Monday will see our Year 6 students join others from around Geelong and district, to participate in

the annual Blue Light Disco hosted by Victoria Police. We know that our students will have a great day as

always and helping them to dominate the dance floor will be Mrs Garland and Ms Duim.

Cyber Safety Session for Years 3 – 6

Robbie Noggler from Victoria Police will be hosting a Cyber Safety session this Friday November 18th, for

all Yr 3/4 students at 9.50-10.35am and for all Yr 5/6 students from 11.20am -12.20pm.

Parents are welcome to attend if they wish.

Golfers Competing in Zone Championships

Today Heather D. and Amy—Lea W. are competing in the Zone Golf Championships. Good luck girls and we

look forward to hearing how you went!

Until next week I wish everyone a wonderful week and remind all families that maximising attendance is a

critical factor in your child achieving their potential so, remember it’s not OK to be away unless you’re sick!

ICT DAY Miss Palmer and 10 of our ICT leaders were lucky enough to attend a ‘Make a Difference’ day

at the Geelong Regional Library last Wednesday. Students were able to explore and use

exciting new technologies to enhance learning. After the morning of exploring, students were

assigned to a group and were set the challenge to design an activity that children in remote

areas could use.

Students created amazing projects that included a dolls house using electrical circuits, a

puzzle using a 3D printer, a maze using a Makey Makey, an activity using Virtual Reality Goggles

and more.

The ICT leaders were amazing and demonstrated all of our school values on the day,

especially Innovation. A huge thanks to Georgia Labbett and Tanya Bonney for driving

students to the event.

OCTOBER WAS WALK TO SCHOOL MONTH! Each teacher kept track daily, of how many students participated in ‘active’ travel

to school during October.

We had 295 students listed of which 198 completed

1 or more means of active travel.

This tallied to 2763 walks completed, covering a distance of 1984kms.

The highest class results were…….

1/2R with 310 walks and 5/6D with 389 walks.

Heather D. (both from 5/6D), on qualifying

for the Zone championships.

Both girls played a terrific game over 9

Unfortunately, only the top two go through

Swearing—school age children

It can be quite a shock when your child starts to swear. How you react to your school-

age child’s swearing now will influence their future swearing behaviour.

What to do about swearing: immediate action

Speak to your child about his choice of words, rather than ignoring his behaviour. Your

child might or might not fully understand a swear word’s meaning. But school-age children

do understand that words can hurt or offend others.

Your reaction will influence whether your child swears again. Stay calm and explain clearly

that the word your child used is not acceptable. This will go a long way towards preventing

future swearing.

Should you explain what the word means?

If you think your child might have some understanding of the meaning of the word, you can

ask her what she thinks the word means. Then use general terms to explain why it’s not

appropriate. For example, you could say, ‘That is a word for private body parts. We don’t

use it like that in our family’.

What to do about swearing: the longer term

It’s a good idea for the adults in your home to discuss and agree on acceptable language.

For example, in some families, expressions such as ‘Oh my god’ are OK, but other words

are not.

Discuss your family rules about acceptable language with your child. For example, you could

say, ‘Please speak politely or don’t speak at all’, or ‘There are some words we don’t use in

our home’. Continued next week…..

BORROWING FROM THE LIBRARY

The end of November flags the end of borrowing library books for 2016.

That means you have about two weeks

to finish reading the books you have

borrowed and return them to the Library.

Start looking for any Library books to be returned around home now. Sometimes books are not looked after as

well as they could be and end up lost.

Unfortunately, a lot of library money is spent

replacing these books so please make sure all

your books are returned.
