BE AN INFORMED VOTER

Along with this month’s issue of Newsteps, all Active and Life Members of the Cleveland Hiking Club will receive a ballot, a candidate statement listing, and a return envelope to mail your ballot back. For those Active and Life Members who have opted

to receive Newsteps electronically, you will receive the voting materials in the mail. For our associate members, you are not eligible to vote, so your mailing this month will not include the voting materials.

Please take the time to read through the candidate statements

and, if you have questions, contact the candidates. Maybe you can run into them on a hike, drop them an e-mail or telephone them with your questions. We have 23 candidates running for the 17 officer, director, and trustee positions. These fine members will oversee the direction of our Club, so it is important that if you vote, you are an informed voter. Get to know the ideas of the candidates and choose the candidates whose ideas you think will make our Club stronger.

After filling out your ballot, please, please be sure to include your

name and return address on the return envelope in order for your vote to count. Any envelope that comes in the mail without a return address cannot be counted. This step ensures that each member has one vote and only one vote.

As the weather cools and, we hope, the rain stops, come and

join CHC on a hike. There are lots of special event hikes planned, or simply lace up your boots or walking shoes and hit the trails right in your nearest Cleveland Metropark when the Club is next hiking there. The Cleveland Hiking Club is here to serve. Before you know it, we’ll be needing the winter gear for hiking, so enjoy the fall and take a hike!

Safety Tips: Stubbornness or Pride

Arthur Lieberman [email protected] Hikers are usually very willing to give help when

needed, but are often too stubborn or too proud to ask for or accept help themselves. There have been numerous instances on hikes of someone with a large cut refusing bandages, which would protect the injured area from further injury. The pain of a bee sting can be lessened by Benadryl® cream, so don’t refuse it when offered. If you don’t have moleskin, please speak up if you have a foot problem. If you need something on a hike, do not be too proud to ask or too stubborn to accept help.

This also pertains to more serious conditions,

such as diabetes. If you’re diabetic and have forgotten your emergency sugar supply, don’t be hesitant to ask for help if you feel yourself running out of energy. Many hikers carry small snack items and would be glad to give you something.

The heat and humidity of summer can also lead

to a dangerous incident. Sometimes a hiker will have great difficulty keeping up. If the hike goes by an air-conditioned nature center, anyone seriously affected by the heat should agree to wait there for a ride. At the very least, a hiker with heat-related fatigue should take the shortest way back to the starting point and do so with another hiker as an escort. Please be willing to stop if you are unable to safely continue on a hike.

A Note to Excursion Participants

Kathy Driscoll 440-973-4440 [email protected] Excursion leaders have asked that Club members be

reminded to only sign up for a CHC trip that they fully intend to go on. There usually are a number of participants who cancel out of a trip, sometimes for a good reason and sometimes not. Some circumstances cannot be avoided and the leaders understand that. On the other hand, there are people who sign up to reserve a spot in case they decide to go later and then cancel.

Cancellations cause a number of problems for an

excursion leader. If a travel agent is involved, a group size was factored into the pricing and you may not get all your money back. If the leader made the arrangements, he or she must refigure the budget, causing others on the trip to absorb the cost difference. If payments for a bus, hotel, restaurant, or social event have been made, you again may not get a full refund and hard feelings can occur.

If you need to cancel, please do so as soon as possible.

The closer it gets to the trip the more problems arise for the leader and possibly a roommate, and refunds may not be possible. The wait list usually dwindles, because those on the list have made other plans. The leader cannot be expected to financially cover the cost for someone who cancels.

The Club does not back trips financially. The Club only

approves an excursion as a CHC hiking trip; therefore, funding is between the participant, the travel agent if there is one, the leader, and shared with other members on the trip. Please remember too that the excursion leaders are volunteering their time to expand our hiking experiences. With all that said, CHC excursions are a great opportunity to travel and if you haven’t signed up for one yet, you should take the opportunity to do so.

Swine Creek Hike — Correction to Directions

September 28, 2011 Lee Schiemann [email protected]

The directions in the hiking schedule for the Swine

Creek hike at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 28, contained serious errors. If you plan to do this hike, please read the revised directions below:

Take SR 87 east through Middlefield; continue east for

2-1/2 miles past the junction of SR 87 and SR 528, then turn RIGHT onto Hayes Rd. Proceed south on Hayes to the first entrance for Swine Creek Reservation. Meet at the Lodge Parking area. The hike will include trails that are a part of the Geauga Park District’s 50th Anniversary, 50 mile challenge.

Looking Backwards: September 1961

Donna Pounds [email protected] It’s time for Kids’ Day again, which has become a

popular tradition. For the past 11 years, we have brought our kids, mostly grandkids, to camp for entertainment (usually Jungle Terry), a hike, crafts, and lunch. It began as an idea of Louise McDonough’s. Unfortunately, she never lived to see the event happen. She discussed it at Lake Hope, Memorial Day Weekend 2000, and her cabin-mates carried through with the plan. She said it had been done in the past and she wanted to revive it. There doesn’t appear to be any mention of a Kids’ Day in past Newsteps, but maybe it was a hike like this, from 50 years ago (September 1961), that inspired that her:

“This was a children’s hike. Well, there were 7 lovely

children accompanied by 11 adults. They were brave enough to try an evening cross-country hike, which included walking a trestle over Big Creek. The children thought the hike was `the greatest’ especially when the weeds were well over their heads.“

Bridges of Ashtabula County October 22, 2011

Denise Tobiasz 440-777-0545 [email protected] Come and join us for a beautiful fall day walking the

roads of Ashtabula County, breathing in the fresh country air, and seeing 4 covered bridges and the beauty of fall colors.

The Bridges of Ashtabula County is a 15 mile hike; carry

a lunch or snack. Lunch will be at an apple orchard, where you can purchase apples, pears, or dessert. The hike will be on country roads and hills.

Meet at the Smolen Gulf Bridge at 9:00 a.m. We will

shuttle to the beginning of the hike. Directions: Take 1-90 East to Route 11 North. Go two

exits to Route 84. Turn left on Route 84 and continue until you get to a 3-way stop sign. Turn left on State St. and park in the Bridge parking lot.

Joins us after the hike to socialize at a local winery, and

don’t forget your camera!

From the Chief Pathfinder Why Not Try Leading a Hike?

Ron Hueter 440-887-1990 [email protected]

Calling all hikers, calling all hikers — have you ever lead a hike? No? Well, why not give it a try. It’s natural to be nervous about leading your first hike. Talk with other hike leaders and see if an experienced hike leader is willing to come on your first hike for moral support.

The best place to lead your first hike is close to your

home — in other words, an area that you know very well. The Cleveland Metroparks have over 60 miles of paved all-purpose trails, 82 miles of bridle trails, and many miles of hiking trails. There are 14 Reservations and 5 Nature Centers in the Metroparks with lots of well-marked hiking trails.

Come on, give leading a hike a try – it’s a lot more fun

than you think. Call me or talk with your hike leader or someone on the Pathfinder committee.

Sunshine/Sympathy Send a card, make a call, say a prayer

Thank You Notes

During the brief time that my sister, Lynn Schreiber, was in hospice care, a great many cards and letters came to her from CHC members. Lynn read many of the cards and letters herself; others were read aloud to her by Club member and friend, Warren Davis, or by me. I would like to thank all CHC members who sent cards and letters to Lynn in May. I would also like to thank the Club and the individuals who organized it for the memorial for Lynn held on Saturday, August 6.

Sincerely, Glenn Schreiber

2012 Florida Excursion Dave and Marilyn Richards 440-670-1515 [email protected]

Come spend a relaxing and enjoyable time in the

Orlando, Florida, area from February 15 to 21, 2012. Bask in the sun and take a “winter break” from the cold and snow and come south for a taste of summer in February!

Our trip will begin in the Orlando area and move north to

St. Augustine. Points of interest for our hiking journey will include: Historic Sanford, Mt. Dora (highest point in the area), Wekiwa State Park, New Smyrna Beach, Blue Springs Park (a chance see manatees), and Ocala National Forest. Additional options will be available for shopping, sightseeing, Disney, and other highlights.

Planned hikes will be around 10 miles per day. Hiking

will provide options for various skill levels and NO HILLS! (Except, of course, Mt. Dora — all 150 feet of it.)

Come join the fun! If you are interested, please e-mail

Dave and Marilyn at [email protected] or call 440-670-1515. You will need to make hotel reservations directly with the hotels in the areas we have selected, as February is a busy month with lots of activities in the Orlando/Daytona area. Our event will be just before the Daytona 500 (February 26) and Bike Week (beginning March 4) and thus rooms may be hard to get. A list of hotel options will be provided to those who sign up for the excursion.

More detailed instructions will be given as we get closer

to the dates of the hikes.

Ethel Horvath is recovering from surgery and complications. She is home and recovering nicely now. We hope recovery is quick and complete.

Mary Seidowski, a regular leisure hiker and leader, died recently. Our sympathy is extended to her family and friends.

President: Darlene Jacobson encouraged everyone to attend the volunteer appreciation dinner. There is still room to sign up. Everyone who is running for office, please announce yourself on the hikes so the membership has an opportunity to get to know your ideas.

The Club received a proposal from Avalanche Energy seeking mineral rights to our Hinckley property. After discussion, no board member wanted to bring forward a motion to entertain the offer. No further action will be taken.

2012 Budget Planning: The board discussed the proposed budget. The board asked for the treasurer to present further detail at the October meeting.

Announcements: Dave Richards said the holiday party would start at 4:00 p.m. this year instead of 5:00 p.m. as in the past. The October board meeting will be at Camp Onwego.
