FROM THE PRINCIPALIt is no wonder that one of the key causes of anxiety forparents regarding their children’s education is their ability toread. Reading pervades almost every part of our lives and isintegral to success.
There are two key aspects to Reading – learning what isneeded to master the skill; and the motivation to continuereading once proficiency is gained.
Many children enjoy learning Phonics, Context, Comprehensionetc., and make steady progress at different rates, until theybecome independent readers. A significant number need extrasupport to achieve this.
It is the job of schools to teach children to read. It is the jobof parents to give support, interest, enthusiasm and practice inreading to their children. Research shows that students achievetheir best outcomes when supported by positive partnershipsbetween school and parents.
Once children can read with a degree of independence, thekey factor in ensuring that they continue to read is motivation.We can give stickers and scores, run readathons, promisepocket money, gifts or sometimes threats as incentives to read;
however, none of these things will ever inspire a child with a lovefor reading.
The rewards for reading are in reading itself. We read forinformation or for entertainment; to escape for a while into amagical world; to laugh, to cry, to feel empathy for others.
Our job as parents and educators is to help our children todiscover the enormous fulfilment and enrichment that readingcan provide. This can be talked about, modelled, but neverforced.
Our Book Parade this week was a demonstration of the joy ofReading. The children dressed as their favourite book characterand were able to articulate their character and its context. Eventhe weather cooperated to give us a bright, breezy day.
Thanks to Mrs Vicki Major for her quiet and efficientorganisation of Book Week and the parade and also thank youto her very able assistant, Mrs Karen Allen.

From the Year 6 Newsletter Committee…
On Wednesday the year 6 students had a fun science day atthe college.
Each class worked with the senior college chemistry studentsto make rockets and tie dyes.
We also made rockets with fizzy tablets. They were so cool wehad a lot of fun.
We made lava cups with oil, water and food colouring, but ourfavourite part of the day was the Coke and Mentos explosion.
Also we investigated what happens when you mix colouredmilk and detergent. In the end we got lollies and lots of foodcolouring on our hands.
It was very exciting having the seniors at the high schoolteaching us science.
Workplace Health & Safety Information
Influenza & Other Nasties
As you will be aware, there has been a serious outbreak ofInfluenza A right throughout South East Queensland. Here at StPats we have not been immune and we have had quite a fewcases over the past weeks. If you suspect that your childrenhave more than a common cold, please have them seen toby a doctor so that you can have a proper diagnosis. If it is
4
confirmed that they have Influenza, please keep them homeuntil they are completely well. This is the instruction from theQueensland Department of Health Timeout Advice.
There are also many cases of diarrhoea and vomiting goingthrough our area, please note, it is also a directive of theQueensland Department of Health Timeout Advice that allpeople stay at home for 48 hours after the last bout ofdiarrhoea and / or vomiting as the infected person is stillcontagious for that period of time.
The best way to prevent the spread of germs is to keep allsurfaces clean and most importantly wash your handsthoroughly. Our hands and fingers are the most common causeof us getting sick.
YOUR STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TOHAND WASHING
Having clean hands is the first step topreventing the spread of the commoncold and flu virus. Read on to stay healthy with good handhygiene:
STEP 1: Find the Best Soaps for the Job
Put your hands together for the time-tested, dirt-defying duo:soap and water. Canadian researchers recently contaminated10 volunteers with harmless bacteria, then had them scrubtheir hands with bar soap, antibacterial soap, antiseptic handwipes, or an alcohol-based hand rub. The hands-down winnerat removing the bad stuff? The traditional bar soap.
When soap and water aren’t handy, consider an alcohol-basedhand sanitizer as a safe alternative.
Look for products with an alcohol content above 60 percent(the minimum amount needed to kill bacteria and viruses), stashthem in your purse, glove compartment, and desk drawer.
STEP 2: Stay Out of Hot Water
For a long time it was believed that hot water battled bacteriabetter than cold water. However, there's no scientific evidenceto back this up. In fact, a study of 25 subjects, published in theJournal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, reportedthat even when water ranged from 40° F to 120° F, the amountof bacteria removed wasn't affected.
Hot water, on the other hand, may irritate dry skin, especiallyduring the winter months. Save your skin by washing yourhands under tepid water instead.
STEP 3: Work Up a Lather with Lyrics
Everyone knows the kid-friendly “Happy Birthday” song trick:Humming the song twice is a reliable guide for how long youshould scrub your palms, fingers, nails, and back of hands. But feel free to choose and adult equivalent? Whatever youchoose to croon the bottom line is to work up more foam thana latte-making barista for at least 25 seconds.
STEP 4: Now Rinse and Repeat (Often)
While there’s no magic number for how many times you shouldwash your hands daily, here are some interesting figures toconsider: About 3,000 infectious droplets are released in asingle cough, some whizzing out of the mouth as fast as 50miles per hour. That’s nothing compared with the 40,000droplets fired from every sneeze. Your odds of catching oneof these floating germs? These devious droplets can survivefor hours (some diseases can live up to 3 days on nonporoussurfaces, like taps and door knobs), so be sure to wash yourhands often and use disinfectant wipes particularly on sharedobjects, such as a mouse, keyboard, or phone.
STEP 5: Keep Coughs and Sneezes Away from YourHands; Cover up in Other Ways
Considering how often people touch theirfaces—about 16 times per hour according toa study which observed 10 people over threehours—maintaining clean hands is crucial toavoiding self-contamination through theeyes, nose, and mouth. If you have to sneeze, protect yourselfand others by always aiming for a bent elbow, never yourhands.
Some parts of this were extracted from Hand Hygiene Australia and theWomen’s Health Mag website.
