Institutional Church• Local parish church is the basic religious unit all

across Europe

• very social gatherings neighbors came together for baptisms, marriages, funerals, special events. and together went on pilgrimages (big part of community life)

• Parishes distributed charity, cared for the orphans, and gave education to common people (what they could)

• During reformation the political power of rulers became more powerful then the church in their country

• Spain great example because they used their power to help the catholic church and lead the Spanish inquisition and they had firm control of religion in their nation

• 1773 Jesuit society were dissolved due to political pressure from France Rome and Spain

Gender Constructions and Education of Girls

• Rousseau believed that women and men were equal human beings but their sex made them different

• boys and girls would be given different education so they could "operate in their Separate Spheres”

• girls: educated on household duties, good mothering, and wifely obedience

• boys: educated in what interests them mostly academic subjects

• They are similar as children and as adults what makes them different is their characteristics

• men can't raise a child, women do this distinguishes them

• man won't have the love and patience and zeal to raise their children that women do

Protestant Revival• Began in Germany and was called Pietism and

was called for because protestant reformers had removed all medieval practices that they found pointless and striped churches of all decoration because it wasn’t stated in scripture

• First, it called for a more intriguing and warm religion to keep followers entertained

• Second, it reasserted earlier radical stress on priesthood of all believers and bible readings and study were extended to all classes which brought the appeal of education

• Finally, it taught the practical power of Christian rebirth in everyday life and that reborn Christians should lead good honest lives and could be from any social class

• End pagan practices of its followers to enforce its own strength

Catholic Piety• Differed from Protestantism at the time

because churches were elegantly decorated in a baroque style

• Also, festivals and holidays were widely celebrated such as Easter Communion, which probably had over 95% of the population in attendance

• Maintained medieval ideals of saints and crosses

• Catholic Hierarchy sought to end pagan practices by Catholic followers much like Protestantism because it was seen as shameful and ridiculous

Leisure and Recreation• Carnival:

• Mostly in Catholic and Mediterranean Europe

• After Lent- Wild release of drinking, dancing, + masquerading

• Gave people a chance to release there frustrations

• Talked in social groups- oral culture

• Gather in cottages to sew, spin, chat, laugh also to look at possible suitors for daughters

• Men- drink in public places with friends

• People turned to hard liquor-cheaper b/c of distilling advancements

• Urban fairs- prepared food, acrobats, optical allusions, etc.

• Blood sports- bullbaiting and cockfighting

• Protestant Church attempted to halt frivolous activity
