Obsculta-Music is an independent record label which was founded by the Cistercian Monks of Stift Heiligenkreuz in 2011. The label is based in the monk´s monastery in the Viennese Forest /Austria originally specialized in the re-lease of Gregorian chant. The monks themselves became world-renowned with the Album “Chant – Music for Paradise” which has sold more than a million specimens all over Europe. Out of the still on-going listener´s high demand for Gregorian-chant accrued the monk´s necessity of running their own label, named after the first words of their order´s rule: “Obsculta, o fili...”First own CD-productions labelled “Chant” have been re-leased in 2012, nowadays the label evolves a wide portfolio of CD and DVD productions in terms of spiritual contents in a broad sense, involving Gregorian chant as well as high-quality classical productions but also Popular-music ele-ments.
Contrastes Records is dedicated to offering fine re-cordings specialising in classical guitar music, and its interrelationship with contemporary composers, fla-menco, jazz, dance, theatre, cinema, and photogra-phy. More specifically, Contrastes was born from the desire to leverage the creativity of young, talented musicians, despite the challenging economic context we are living in.
According to the philosopher and musicologist Vla-dimir Jankélévitch in Music and the Ineffable, music is an art of indetermination since it cannot be pin-ned down, and has a capacity to engender limitless resonance. Music expresses and doesn’t express, it expresses an infinite number of things, or expresses nothing, as you wish. It is an undefined expression, or an expression with multiple meanings. It is never simple. Consequently, it opens infinite horizons; it never expresses this or that, rather, it expresses a whole.
Our recordings are primarily defined by the musical vision of the artists we decide to work with. What really interests us, beyond the artist’s technique and command of classical guitar repertoire, is a world that is ca-pable of breeding an interpreter and the artist’s personal vision of music as a phenomenon.Contrastes Records boasts an interdisciplinary team of professionals to handle everything from sound quality to booklet composition and marketing.
STRAUSS, RICHARD - Don Juan; Ein Heldenleben
In these live recordings, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and its longtime chief conductor Mariss Jansons present two «heroic» tone poems by Richard Strauss. With his «Don Juan», the young and aspiring Strauss secured himself a lasting place in the musical life of the Ger-man Empire and proved to be a prematurely consummate master of the symphonic poem genre. «Ein Heldenleben» («A Hero’s Life»), written at the turn of the 20th century, is a work of unshakeable self-confidence in every regard. Strauss left everyone in little doubt that he had portrayed himself as the hero in his music, and the work met with an ambivalent reception. Today, with its massive score for over one hundred musicians, «Ein Heldenleben» ranks as one of the great touchstones for a sym-phony orchestra – and with its extensive solo violin part, for a concertmaster too.
• Recent live recording from February 2014 (Ein Heldenleben)• Release coincides with the 150th anniversary of Richard Strauss’s birth (1864-1949)• Mariss Jansons’ second release of works by Richard Strauss (2010: Cat. No. 900707 - Rosenkavalier Suite, Till Eulenspiegel and Four Last Songs)»

Zemlinsky, Korngold and Bloch also shared the fate of so many other important musical voices of the early twentieth century when their music was banned, and their lives and careers upended, by the Nazi regime. All three names can be found in the infamous Lexi-kon der Juden in der Musik, first published under the auspices of the Nazi Party in 1940. These policies, and others, created a rupture in the seamless heritage of German music, removing thousands of worthy works from performance, from publication and--for many-- from posterity. It is the hope that musicians and music-lovers everywhere will hear these three works, and be intrigued to listen to--and to play--these and other chamber works by the many composers whose fortunes were curtailed by unfortunate timing on the stage of twentieth-century Europe. With the pianistic talent of the young artist Cassandra Wyss the compilation of works by Wilhelm Stenhammar and Jean Sibelius on one CD emerges as a gateway into the world of Nordic sound gems. With her artistic courage to be stubborn – to be understood in the spirit of Hermann Hesse –, namely to select precisely those works that suit her as a pianist, Cassandra Wyss enables the careful listener to take a new and very personal view of the rich repertoire of Scandinavian music.

In 1768, right at the beginning of his long period as musical director of the Hamburg princi-pal churches, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach composed one of his most important oratorios. The new, sensitive musical language he used delighted contemporaries and colleagues alike. Frieder Bernius and the Kammerchor Stuttgart are marking the composer’s 300th anniver-sary with a recording of this masterpiece, thereby contributing a fitting concluding note to the anniversary year.
2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets and English horn, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trom-bones, timpani, harps, strings and organ are required for the original massive orchestra which Charles Gounod envisaged for his Requiem in C major. The first edition of Antonín Dvořák’s Mass in D major is for a smaller orchestra but nonetheless requires 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, 3 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, timpani, strings and organ. Both works appear on this recording in versions for smaller ensembles, which means they can also be perfor-med when only limited forces are available: in the Gounod Requiem chorus and soloists are accompanied only by organ, while the Dvořák Mass acquires a special tonal color through its wind quintet accompaniment.

Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1710–84) was one of the most outstanding, yet at the same time, most idiosyncratic composers of his time. His work reflects his ambitious attempt to assimilate his father’s legacy and to develop it further to suit the taste of his own genera-tion. This becomes apparent in his keyboard music – from the early works to the late sona-tas and fantasias. Léon Berben’s inspiring performances emphasize the composer’s special synthesis of high-baroque complexitiy and galant, sensitive style.

The Garcia Abril Vademecum has become a reference work for students of the conserva-tory. It is not a coincidence if this collection of 24 pieces for guitar is entitled De la iniciacion al virtuosismo, for it follows a path that not only becomes complicated in the fingers of those who practice it but, as the course of a river, builds sound experiences characterized by idiomatic melodic beauty that reveals both the pulse of a great educationist and a unique composer.

The Franco- Spanish guitarist Thibaut Garcia has recently been awarded the 1st Prize of the Fourth International Guitar Competition in Seville. In his new album for the label Contrasts he shows that his instrument , so apparently fine and endearing ear, may be one of the wildest - treacherous even - of the repertoire. Thibaut Garcia « tames it « wading eras and styles with cleanliness, beauty and poetry that have made him known throughout the world and under which beat more than a few hours of study and reflection.

Autumn of the Soul , the latest album by Lorenzo Micheli , has been hailed as a master-piece of contemporary guitar discography not only by the high level of interpretation of his factotum , but also by an internal musical drama articulated arround works of Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Tansman or Gilardino. Autumn of the Soul is an invitation to explore the labyrinth of the soul where technique and virtuosity reach this stage that mystics defined as silent music or sound alone .
The first disc entirely devoted to the Belgian composer Michel Fourgon, Filigranes leads the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège (OPRL) ‘adrift’ yet under the priceless guidance of Pascal Rophé with his “amazing ability to convey a new score in minute detail and with an expression that make him a conductor with whom every composer today would want to collaborate” (Michel Fourgon). To the perennial question of the most inquisitive and “what about musical creation?”, Filigranes is a tree bearing the fruits of more than ten years of collaboration between the composer and one of the most high-profile of European orchestras. With Filigranes, the listener is plunged directly into the very heart of an orchestral morphing that is at once dense and nuanced, a playful patchwork highlighted by inspiration that erupts ‘en filigrane’ - as a watermark. From the cori spezzati of the Renaissance to the indeterminacy of the American avant-garde, Filigranes also shows a playful Luigi Nono engaging with Clara Schumann and others. Quite particular attention is paid to the Belgian poet Corinne Hoex – her text sung by the Namur Chamber Choir (CCN), revealing the mysteries of an utterly remarkable correspondence. To this compass rose of contemporary music formed by Michel Fourgon, the OPRL, Pascal Rophé and the CCN, is added the prodigiously inspirational breath of the clarinettist Jean-Pierre Peuvion (already the first performer of many works by composers such as Pousseur, Scelsi, Cage, Messiaen, Radulescu, etc.). Listeners, you have a favourable wind! Filigranes will carry you off like the waves of the North Sea “with neither return nor backwash.”

«Defying the relentless tick-tock of the pendulum, O Clock relates to the intangible ‘to and fro’ of a time that no-one can grasp - other than a listener. Music “to undo time”, O Clock is a response to the traditional tempus fugit whereby time passes and leaves one voiceless. From the music of Jean-Paul Dessy to the characteristic refinement of the ensemble Musiques Nouvelles, the compass needle of Jean-Paul Dessy points, like some new Orpheus, towards the relishing of an infinity experienced in full flight. Jean-Paul Dessy and Musiques Nouvelles deconstruct time to the point where O Clock slips through forms in a strangely Freudian ‘to-ing and fro-ing’. In this new CD entirely devoted to the composer, Jean-Paul Dessy defies the corridors of everyone’s individual time. Setting time to music or setting one’s own time to music? Challenge or conceit? When all is said and done, representing time to oneself resembles, uncannily accurately, that whirlwind of life that long ago defied the ingenious ‘double spiral’ staircase of one of the great masters of the Renaissance. O Clock is that inescapable moment when the listener feels he takes flight, that moment when, between Limbo and Paradise, eternity soars aloft.»

The CD Chant - Stabat Mater includes Gregorian chant in its pure meditative form of the 12th century. In addition, there are bonus tracks with piano accompaniment of Luxembur-ger pianist David Ianni. The songs refer to the sufferings of Jesus’ mother Mary and sing at the same time the hope that love bears all the pain and so overcomes all suffering. The Heiligenkreuz monks are supported by their brothers from the Stiepel monastery.

There was a wonderful ensemble in Frankfurt to perform Brigitte Fassbaender’s production of the Strauss opera Ariadne on Naxos in October 2013. “Scenically and musically brilliant” and “sparkling spirit and level-headed heartiness”; this is how the Frankfurter Rundschau of 7 October 2013 (Hans-Klaus Jungheinrich) described the premiere evening. Sebastian Weigle, as an experienced and outstanding Strauss conductor, leaves nothing to be desired, and Camilla Nylund is a first-class Ariadne on her fourth operatic complete recording for OehmsClassics.

Although the output of Gregorio Allegri was not large, it covered almost every musical genre of the time, from strict polyphony to monody, instrumental music and the cantata. He is now remembered principally as the composer of the nine-voice Miserere, written around 1638 for the Holy Week celebrations and made famous in the nineteenth century version which requires a high C in the coro favorito. Five years of bibliographic and musical research in Italy and abroad have permitted the rediscovery of the well-rounded personality that his contemporaries recognized in Allegri, and, from this point of view, quite apart from a world premier recording of exceptional importance, the pieces contained in the Altemps manuscripts undoubtedly constitute a new chapter to add to the history of sacred music.

The chamber music of Vivaldi is a remarkable side of Vivaldi’s art and the Vivaldi Renaissance is one of the more meaningful facts about baroque music in our time. The concertos and the sonata here recorded are seldom performed and recorded, but through the link between virtuosic liveliness and deep melodic expression, counterpoint and melody focus brilliantly to show Vivaldi’s talent and artis-try. Antonio Lucio Vivaldi, an Italian composer and violinist in the Venetian Baroque, was one of the best violin virtuosos of his time. Once considered one of his era’s most celebrated violin virtuosos, he is now considered one of the greatest Baroque composers.Hailed throughout Europe as a most important, influent and original composer, Vivaldi critically contributed to the development of the solo concerto initiated by Giuseppe Torelli, simultaneously doing so in the development of violin technique and orchestration. Throughout his lifetime, Vivaldi - a composer of many lyric operas - penned an enormous corpus of works encompassing countless concertos, sonatas, and sacred music. In his concertos and chamber sonatas, Vivaldi reveals his won-derful melodic talent with both deep and elegant allure. With unanimous audience applause conti-nuing into the present era, the Vivaldi Renaissance is truly one of the most meaningful and brilliant trends in the world of Baroque music today.

Mario Pilati’s career has been very short: a rapid success, terminated too early by illness and a pre-mature death.Mario Pilati was born in Naples on 16 October 1903. He started studying piano to fulfil his parents’ wishes as it was the custom of the upper class Neapolitan families that the education of the young included also the study of music. But his father, Antonio Pilati, would not have wanted that his son became a professional musician, so he always obstructed his studies and then his son’s career, who already at thirteen years old knew what he wanted: he was a gifted pianist, in particular, following his creative urges led him to write instinctively a lot of music, even 1before receiving composition lessons. After two years of studies at Musical Lyceum he was admitted at the Conservatory S. Pietro in Majella, following the composition classes of Antonio Savasta (1847-1959) and in only five years (1918-1923) he achieved the Diploma in Composition. This is how Alfredo Sangiorgi, his schoolmate, remembers the years of study with the young Pilati: “Mario Pilati didn’t live his youth, his adoles-cence was lived among books: thirsty for knowledge, with his sharp intelligence he absorbed the most he could. Since those early years his culture was exceptional and not only his musical one. Hereasoned about everything with the balance of an adult: prompt, witty, bright in conversations and in writing, his thought was always clear and precise, in school he preceded everything and everyone”.

caminito | josé van dam meets carlos gardel jean-philippe collard-neven
jean-louis rassinfosse
ALBARE is the nom de guerre of Albert Dadon, a virtuoso jazz guitarist with a strong melodic sense and a wealth of global influences. Born in Morocco and raised in Israel and France, Albare first worked as a musician in France, before emigrating to Australia at the age of 27. He is not only well known as a jazz musician but has maintained a highly successful career as one of Australia’s most prominent musician entrepreneurs. He currently lives in Melbourne, Australia. Endorsed by Gibson Guitars for over 20 years, Albare’s recording career began with a string of ‘acid jazz’ albums for Festival Records in the early 90s. Albare’s recording and performing has always worked in parallel with his work to promote Australian Jazz.As the Director of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival he presented great artists such as such as Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter and Gary Burton to name but a few. Albare is also the founder of the Australian Jazz ‘Bell’Awards (the Grammy equivalent for Jazz in Australia). His sixth album was recorded in 2012. Long Way (ENJ-9592) was the first album produced for the prestigious German jazz label ENJA RECORDS. Recorded in New York, the album features triple Gram-my winner drummer Antonio Sanchez, saxophonist George Garzone, pianist Leo Genovese (Espe-ranza Spalding), prolific harmonica player Hendrik Meurkens and bassist Evripedes Evripidou.

There is a Khoury style. It consists of a musical flow outside of all rigid divisions incorporating dif-ferent musical cultures into an appropriate combination. In fact it is a grand mixture of desires, expressions, of languages clearly and widely differentiated, unsusceptible or even of opposed cha-racteristics although complimentary. Intertwined these musical traditions are melted together (the Middle East, the Mediterranean which is the sesam, jazz and its blue notes, the ligthnings of impro-visation, but also flamenco and gypsy music, celtic and Indian), not resembling anything known. The Khoury Project is a kind of family photo, the three brothers live and breathe with the music glued to their body Elia Khoury (oud), Basil Khoury (violin) and Osama Khoury (qanun - the « pilot » of the group -,) who are joined by Guillaume Robert (double bass), Inor Sotolongo (percussion) and a guest on four titles, percussionist Youssef Hbeisch. The Khoury brothers , a classic formation neighbouring to the renowned masters (Munir Bashir, the master of Iraki oud for Elia, Halil Karaduman’s Turkish qanun for Osama and Kyriakos Patras for Basil), influenced by multiple experiences, lyrical art with famed tenor Roberto Alagna, contemporary music with singer Pascal Dusapin, flamenco with vocalist Enrique Morente and his daughter Estrella.

The young band was just two months old when it was selected to participate in the Ger-man Newco-mers Festival. Eva Klesse and her band won the Leipzig Newcomer Prize. The jury praises the band as “excellent”, and points out the bandleader’s talent “to integrate differing temperaments and to write compositions which give cohesion to the group but at the same time respect the individual handwri-ting of the band members.” JAZZ THING de-scribes the lady drummer as a “sound aware player with powerful melodies”.In September 2013 the quartet opened the Leipzig Jazz Festival, their concert at the famed Berlin Jazz Days in early November was a pure triumph in front of a huge audience and led immediately to the next invitation by the Berlin Jazz Days for November 2014.Four very different temperaments with very different backgrounds meet to fuse fully into a common band sound. A melancholic, tense and high energy Modern Jazz springs up. In her compositions Eva Klesse follows an emotional impulse above all. Sometimes it is mel-ancholy, sometimes anger, some-times joy – but never indifference. This debut album will have a strong impact on the jazz scene – the quartet is on an intense upward move and we are happy to accompany it.

Bassist Holger Scheidt (born 1979) presents his third album. Titled The Tides of Life it is a remarkable release. Hailing from Germany he began to move in the international scene young of age already. During the last ten years of his creative life which he spent mostly in France, Spain and the USA two albums saw the light of day which related to the scene and location where he had was living at that time. The largest German daily (Süddeutsche Zeitung) described them as a tribute as an homage to the global spirit of jazz, the Spanish La Vanguardia said:“Precious compositions with clear struc-ture and un-compromising contemporary sound“.Jazz magazine Jazzpodium titled:“Modern jazz of highest quality“.To these albums folllows now a reflection on his early years as composer and a tribute to the New York quintets oft he beginning 60ties. A thematic cycle of 6 pieces on a classical basis depicts basic human moods, sequenced to express a well known dramaturgy ending in optimism :Failure/ Rage / Calm / Hope / Triumph. Holger Scheidt:“ Recordings like Miles Nefertiti or Herbie Hancocks Maiden Voyage have elevated my understanding of music in a most powerful way.It was that period of jazz that opened my ears to the large universe of music this world has to offer.“

This is Rez Abbasi’s third album for the label. The New Yorker guitarist with Pakistani roots has found an enticing way to respect both the Indian musical Culture and Charlie Parker at the same time. In his words: «Thinking of the 1970’s conjures up a plethora of historical events, one of which is the radical invention of fully electronic instruments. Galvanized in the late 60’s but refined in the 70’s, these sound-manipulating machines spawned new genres and sub-genres of music including Disco, Funk, Synthpop, Punk-Rock, Pro-gressive-Rock, Heavy Metal and New Wave. I discovered Jazz in 1983 via Charlie Parker. My formative years were spent studying and absorbing the music of the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. I continued to make my way through the timeline and soon discovered Jazz from the 70’s. At the time, I found myself unwilling to make friends with the synthetic, sometimes brash, saturated electric textures that were spewing out of the speak-ers even though my primary instrument was and still is the electric guitar. Subsequently I ended up bypass-ing much of the 70’s Jazz period. Recently I’ve felt the urge to look back at what is often called Jazz-Rock or Jazz-Fusion and realized there are many great compositions that lie under the layers of the electrified sounds. I presented the idea of play-ing some of these tunes acoustically to my group, RAAQ.»

STEEN-ANDERSEN, SIMON - Black Box Music
The Danish composer Simon Steen-Andersen’s audio-visual work Black Box Music is a surprising, energetic, noisy and yet profoundly entertaining deconstruction of traditional musical drama. The starting point is the classical setting of a conductor in front of an orchestra – but quickly the scenery explodes in musical and choreographic energy ad absurdum, bending the conductor’s role through puppet theatre, hand choreography and eventually a musical performance involving tuning forks, finger snaps, rubber bands and the construction of a musical machine within the black box. The DVD also includes Steen-Andersen’s signature work Run Time Error, filmed at the Royal Library in Copenhagen, as well as a short documentary and thus offers a fascinating meeting with one of Nordic Music’s most visionary voices today.Since its conception in 2012, “Black Box Music” has been per-formed 15 times in 9 different countries. The work was nomi-nated for the Nordic Council Music Prize 2014.
