Geocluster 5.0 Release Notes

Geocluster 5.0 runs both batch and interactive applications on PC/Linux equipment. Note that batch software and interactive applications are no longeravailable on the following systems:

• SUN. Note that the Solaris operating system is supported only for the servers (XPS, SDS, Jobmanager, DDAM).

Geocluster 5.0 contains new features and improvements as well as a new version of the working environment. It is necessary to upgrade the system software to the recommended level before installing this release.

There has been no change in the OS level on SUN. However, for PC/Linux platforms, batch software is compiled using a different OS level (RHEL 4.3), available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

Specific instructions are provided in the Installation Guide on how to ensure compatibility between Geocluster 5.0 and Geocluster 4.1.

The FLEXnet license manager is used to manage licenses for batch software as well as for interactive applications. It is recommended to read the details about the FLEXnet license manager provided in the Geocluster Installation Guide.

This version includes all patches distributed for the Geocluster 4.1 release except for those patches which were for temporary use or of interest to a limited number of sites.

The list of patches not integrated in the current release is given in Chapter F of this document. These patches are delivered with the release and the list will be updated on a monthly basis by the Geocluster User Support Group.

Additional InformationAll features described in this document may not be available in every processing center, as the contents of the version supplied to each site depends on an individual license agreement.

This software was sponsored by an oil industry consortium and developed by CGGVeritas. The current standard version is VectorVista 3.1.2.

GeOlympus: the statics workstationThis package composed of three Java-based applications, offers a range of production-oriented tools for 2D and 3D static analysis.

Geostar works on picked refracted arrivals to update a multi-layered or gridded tomographic model of the near surface and derive long and short wave statics corrections.

GeoPACS cross-correlates the elementary traces of pre-stack gathers with a stack model, following a few picked reflectors. GeoPACS includes a kinematic solution to update the input velocity field. It also brings more degrees of freedom than conventional residual static methods to correct large magnitude short wave anomalies or medium wave and smaller magnitude anomalies.

GeoWZ works with auxiliary weathering data (upholes, well logs, weathering shots and maps) that can be loaded and interpreted to construct either a layered model of the near-surface (used to compute statics) or an initial model for Geostar refraction-based inversion.

User licencesGeocluster licenses are managed by the FLEXnet package. With respect to the previous version, FLEXnet is the new name for the FLEXlm product (from version 10 onwards). This new version is needed for handling Linux 64-bit applications or dongles. It is fully compatible with applications linked to FlexLM, version 9.5 and under.

FLEXnet 11.4 is implemented for batch modules for the current level 5000 (Geocluster 5.0).

Note FLEXnet 11.4 uses the same API as FLEXnet 9.5.

The "FLEXnet Administration Guide" explains the installation of the licence server.

Refer to the Geocluster 5.0 Installation Guide for information on how to install the license file.

Management of large file systemsThe input and output modules can handle files greater than 2 Gb in size.

Compatibility with previous versions of GeoclusterThe scripts used to run jobs have been modified to allow levels 5000 and 4100 to be used on the same system. The choice of level is determined by the LEVEL variable, a message informs the user of the job submission level.

Refer to the "Installation Guide" for more detailed information.

Oracle softwareYou must upgrade the Oracle software if you installed the XPS version of Geocluster 4.1.

The Oracle version provided with Geocluster 5.0 (Oracle 10.2.0) can also be used to run Geoland 5.0.

Production Management

KereonKereon version 1.6.0

Kereon is an interactive application designed as a production tool for file management and application launching. Kereon allows you to browse, edit and QC the data used in production processing whatever the storage format and location. This Java-based tool offers an advanced and user-friendly interface to easily carry out the tasks of seismic processing such as:

• Geocluster project management,

• Data QC and display with databaords,

• Launch and manage other applications.

For further information, refer to the Kereon online help.

NOTE: Kereon is intended for replacing the Geopad application: all features of Geopad are available in Kereon.

GeodeskGeodesk version 1.5.5

Geodesk is an interactive application which is used as a user desktop production tool providing a complete working environment for Geocluster, from file management to job launching and monitoring. One of the main features of Geodesk is the multiuser functions that allow several users to work on the same Geodesk project without destructive interference.

Geodesk is based on an internal Oracle database which integrates most of the project management data. In Geodesk, the data is stored in the form of text files (job models, job listings and so on) which are stored in the project subdirectories or in the form of tables in the associated database.

NOTE: Geodesk replaces other production tools such as Geowork and Geotapes.

For more information, refer to the Geodesk User’s Guide.

Input/OutputInflate compressed seismic data INFLTThe purpose of the INFLT module is to restore (inflate) standard seismic traces from compressed super traces generated by the SHRNK compression module. The module automatically senses the type of gathers and the kind of algorithm necessary to recover the data.

Shrinkage (compression) of seismic data SHRNKThe purpose of the SHRNK module is to manipulate the seismic information with a much smaller volume size (shrinkage) during seismic jobs, in order to reduce memory or disk space requirements. The information from a full gather is packed in a compressed super trace. It is possible to perform very large sorting with smaller scratch disks. Two options (Lossy and Lossless) are available to achieve compression.

Attribute AnalysisAzimuthal Amplitude versus Angle AZAVAThis module analyses the azimuthal variations of the Amplitude versus Angle for compressional waves, in the presence of HTI layers (Horizontal Transverse Isotropic: Transverse Isotropic medium with a horizontal axis of symmetry).

More generally, for each input trace gather (defined by the Y-flag) with traces tri defined by their incidence angle i and an azimuth φ, the module fits sample after sample, the trace amplitudes according to a given model. Typically, input traces are prestack CDP trace gathers that can be entered in any order: prior sorting of the input traces is not necessary.

Calculation and QCRegularization of multiple 3D datasets QCXPSThis module computes attributes linked to the amplitude of input seismic traces belonging to the same group. The results are stored in an XPS database in the form of one record per group of input traces.

Note on QCXPS

QCXPS replaces modules QCDBU and LIBRI DB which should no longer be coded in your jobs (see page 34).

QCXPS also replaces partly module QCAMP, in particular, attribute computations from trace samples with results stored in trace header words.

DeconvolutionPoststack driven prestack deconvolution PPDECThis module applies gapped deconvolution to prestack gathers by deriving its operator from post stack data corresponding to each trace. Poststack data at a given trace is obtained by stacking all the traces in a user defined neighborhood of the input trace. Gathers are generally common receiver

gathers but any gather domain can be processed assuming correct header words for radial search are provided.

The module can output various diagnostic traces in auxiliary output buffers.

Because stacking is needed, traces input to this program must have NMO applied to them. NMO should be removed from the (main) output buffer afterwards.

Signal Processing2D high resolution TauP decomposition DECTPDECTP implements a forward/reverse tau-p (linear Radon) transform for the purpose of any tau-p processing. While most of the available modules (LINTP, RADON) compute the forward transform by a simple slant-stack (followed by a rho-filter to restore phase and frequency content), DECTP performs a weighted decomposition obtained by a least-squares inversion: the tau-p domain is calculated so as to minimize the misfit after a forward-reverse round-trip.

The slant-stack is suitable for most cases, however, some applications may require a more accurate transform. The inversion brings obvious advantages for the tau-p traces near p=0 and is appropriate to handle noisy data.

The purpose of the weighting applied to the data is to improve the handling of noise.

3D TauP transform TPXPYThe module implements a forward/reverse 3D tau-px-py ("bi-linear" Radon) transform for the purpose of any tau-p processing. It can process 3D gathers (shot points, receiver gathers; cross-spreads,...), as defined by the user.

The forward transform is achieved through a least-square inversion, called tau-px-py decomposition (though the module allows you to achieve the transform by a simple x-y summation (slant-stack)). The tau-px-py domain is calculated so as to minimize the misfit after a forward-reverse round-trip. The reverse

D

transform reconstructs the t-x-y data on exactly the same (x,y) positions as the data input to the forward transform.

One advantage of the 3D tau-px-py transform over the 2D tau-p transform is that it is an exact plane-wave decomposition for point sources (while the 2D tau-p transform basically assumes line sources).

Thanks to the inversion, the algorithm can correctly handle any input geometry. The trace distribution within the gathers has however to be dense, without spatial aliasing. TPXPY can also perform data regularization.

AntimultiplesImproved adaptive model subtraction ADAPTThe module subtracts adaptively a model dataset m or several models (up to 4) from an input dataset d, by estimating an adaptation filter f to increase the resemblance between m and d, under the minimum energy criterion. The module works on 2D spatio-temporal independent sliding windows.

Typical application is the subtraction of a multiple model from the recorded data. However, the module can be applied to any case where one wants to separate signal and (coherent) noise in the data, and when a model of the noise is available (which differ from the exact noise by the amplitude spectrum, a time-shift, phase rotations,...). In the context of multiple attenuation, the “signal” stands for the primaries, and the “noise” stands for the multiples.

Diffracted multiple attenuation DIMATDIMAT is a single trace module designed to attenuate diffracted multiples. Multiple suppression is achieved by limiting sample amplitudes to a maximum value computed in the sliding window, L. This is performed within a user defined frequency bandwidth. Samples over the maximum (K × Average) are multiplied by a scalar (F).

This module uses Geocluster modules EVERY, FILTR, SCALE, and NOISE to perform the multiple attenuation. As a result, error/warning messages

relating to these modules may appear in your listing when they relate to module DIMAT.

One-D internal multiple modelling ODIMMThis module models the interbed multiple (acoustic) wavefield under the assumption of a horizontal stratified medium (1D). The modelling is fully data-driven: it does not require any subsurface information (velocity model or generator picking). The cinematics and the lateral amplitude variations of the multiple wavefield are modelled, but not the correct frequency content: the modelled wavefield has to be subtracted in an adaptive manner from the data, either with classical adaptive subtractions modules (SOMUL, ADAPT), or with pattern recognition modules (SPLAT, SPLTD).

2D prestack surface related multiple modelling SMMODSMMOD is a 2D prestack multiple modeling program based on the Delft Surface Multiple Attenuation Method, also known as SRME (Surface-Related Multiple Elimination).

It predicts and attenuates all surface multiples (events that experienced a reflection off the surface). Being fully data-driven, it does not require any prior knowledge of the subsurface (interfaces, velocities).

This method can be adapted to compute internal multiples (IN option) and works in the Fourier-CMP-offset domain.

An adaptation/subtraction function is used to derive the primary wave field but it is preferable to perform the final subtraction with a specific adaptation/subtraction module (ADAPT/LASUB, ADSUB, SPLAT).

InterpolationRegularization of 2D data REG2DThis module performs regularization of 2D data using different types of algorithms. A cable gather can also be considered as a marine shot gather with only one cable. The input data are processed in spatial blocks and merged into

D

the tapered output flow. For Radon and dealiazed Fourier methods, temporal windowing can be applied.

One pass 3D data regularization REG3DThis module performs regularization of data along two directions using Fourier Reconstruction. The input data are transformed using an irregular 2D Fourier decomposition that respects the input data positions. The reverse transform maps the data to a regular grid. Two algorithms are available, standard Fourier reconstruction (FR), and de-aliased Fourier reconstruction (DF).

The module can be run on a variety of different data domains to regularize in different manners: the data are processed in blocks of size NCX by NCY. Each block is processed individually with a forward irregular Fourier transform followed by a reverse transform to the bin centre position. After each block is regularized, the blocks are merged together with user defined taper sizes.

End-spread to split-spread shotpoints SYMULThis module is designed to transform single end-spread shotpoint trace gathers (such as in conventional marine acquisition geometry for example) into split-spread shotpoint gathers. This operation is performed by trace extrapolation using the reciprocity theorem within a single cable line. The acoustic reciprocity theorem states that an acoustic response remains the same when the source and receiver are interchanged.

The input data must be organized in shotpoint gathers (defined by the Y-bit) sorted in the acquisition order or in reverse acquisition order. On output, the split-spread shotpoints can be used as input to the multiple attenuation module MOMUL.

Note that missing short offset traces are internally extrapolated by SYMUL.

Noise AttenuationFrequency dependent noise attenuation FDNATThis module attenuates high amplitude noises in decomposed frequency bands. It uses frequency-dependent and time-variant threshold values of amplitude samples, within defined trace neighborhoods, to detect and suppress noises specific to different frequency ranges and different times.

The trace neighborhoods can be defined by using either a distance criteria (blank option) or the trace input order.

High density filtering HDFILThis module is used to filter dense attribute fields by applying filtering operators (via LIBRI CN) vertically trace by trace or laterally along the input gather of traces.

Two different options are available: the Frequency option which applies trace per trace (in the frequency domain) the filter designed by LIBRI CN and the Wave Number option which applies laterally (in the wave number domain) the filter designed by LIBRI CN.

Velocity AnalysisPlotting input curvatures as a gather QC CURQCThis module is designed to generate output QC gathers containing the plotted input curvatures. CURQC will plot C2 curvatures with, optionally, input C4 and C6 curvatures added. Input to CURQC, in the main input buffer, are "skeleton" traces of C2 curvature values at the discrete T0 times to be plotted. In addition, CURQC allows optional auxiliary input buffers containing C4 and C6 curvatures to be used. The output gathers, which are suitable only for QC purposes, contain the curvatures plotted as samples at the appropriate offset and time with all other samples in a gather set to the NAN parameter value. By default the output curvatures are plotted with a sample value of 1 however an optional auxiliary input buffer can be specified to provide the sample values (e.g. semblance) with which each curvature will be plotted.

High density residual picking HDRESThis module is used to generate dense volumes of parameters describing the residual reflection curves, which are seen as a linear combination of power of offset. HDRES is based an automatic simultaneous picking of all parameters using orthogonal multi-scale functions. It is able to estimate the coefficients of residual curves for time or depth imaging.

HDRES outputs up to four uncorrelated curvatures (C2, C4, C6,...) as .CST traces in raw (RW option) or skeleton mode (blank option) as well as various QCs. The module can be used as a QC tool for any imaging process: it allows the output of the estimation of the flatness rate of image gathers.

RMO corrections using HD parameter fields HDRMOHDRES is used to generate dense volumes of parameters. The module uses auxiliary input traces (generated by HDRES) containing residual moveout parameters to perform forward or reverse residual moveout corrections which are seen as a linear combination of power of offsets. The values of curvatures traces C2, C4, C6, .. are expressed in milliseconds for time traces and in meters for depth traces. The number of auxiliary input buffers determine the number of moveout parameters to be used for the residual corrections (C2, C4, C4, ...). HDRMO requires full input-traces containing residual moveout parameters for every input bin-gather location (CDP-Line).

High fidelity normal moveout correction HFNMOHFNMO applies or de-applies a normal moveout correction. The moveout correction can be computed using either a straight ray approximation (hyperbolic moveout), an anelliptic approach (shifted hyperbolae) or a full ray tracing solution based on a trend model (with or without anisotropy).

HFNMO supports two different modes. The default mode in which the velocity attributes are allowed to change with every time sample. The TK mode, in which the velocity attributes are sampled at a coarser rate than the input traces, in order to replicate the kinematics used in TIKIM (pre-stack TIme KIrchhoff Migration).

Geocluster 5.0 Release Notes

High density residual picking toolbox REBOXREBOX is a toolbox module used in the handling of high order residual move out (RMO) coefficients stored in trace format.

The following functions are implemented:

• Conversion of RMO coefficients traces from conventional to orthogonal,

• Conversion of RMO coefficients traces from orthogonal to conventional,

• Edit of incoherent High Order RMO curves.

Static CorrectionsAutomatic first break picking FBPIKThis module is designed to automatically pick the first arrival times of the seismic traces input in groups. In such an input trace group, the neighboring traces are expected to be neighbors in the acquisition geometry, and this ensures the gradual changes of the first arrival times from consecutive traces. The picking results and the related quality attributes are saved in the header words, and can be saved to ASCII file, and XPS database. Guide picks can be input through XPS as well.

Various options are available to account for the spatial consistency of the first break signal or to correct cycle skips.

Gather flattening FLATNThis module is designed to flatten gathers (defined by the Y-bit) which cannot be flattened with analytical curves (such as the ones obtained using Taylor expansion). The program uses various methods to flatten gathers; these can be grouped in two categories:

• Stack trace options - (internal, IN, and external, EX) where stack traces are taken as reference.

• Event tracking options - (OR, LS, LI, SP) where the events are tracked across offsets using small time windows. Such tracking is done for all

D

time samples. The derived moveout times are internally processed for lateral and temporal consistency and later applied to input gathers as a one-to-one mapping using a 3 –point quadratic interpolator.

Moveout values used on each time sample on each trace can be output and smoothed externally if needed (using TSFIL, for example). Afterwards they can be input (IS1) and applied to the input gathers.

High fidelity static application HFSTAThe program applies (option FW) or removes (option RV) the full static correction (ST), or its regional component (RG), or its residual component (RS=ST-RG) using a high fidelity interpolation filter on static values in milliseconds or microseconds. It should be used preferably to module HISTA when static wraparounds are applied during high resolution processing. Unlike HISTA, HFSTA does not compute statics, it only applies stored statics.

Water statics computation WASTAThe module WASTA computes water static correction by measuring the following parameters:

• The Water Velocity using water-bottom time picking. The measured water velocity (that varies from sail line to sail line) is replaced by a constant water velocity that is consistent across the whole survey.

• A Tide Static (to be applied after cold water static correction) to bring the zero-offset water-bottom time to a reference water bottom (smoothed water bottom given by the user). One value of tide static per shotpoint will be derived.

• A residual static (to be applied after cold water and tide static correction) derived for each 3D CDP gather to bring the zero-offset water-bottom time to the reference water bottom.

All these measurements are then used by the module WASAP to correct for water column variations.

D-12

Page 63: Release Notes

Geocluster 5.0 Release Notes

Water statics application WASAPThis module applies the water statics calculated by WASTA. The module WASAP makes a direct measurement of the water velocity and calculates the shifts necessary to correct to a reference velocity, VREF, and to a reference water bottom. Using the same VREF and reference water bottom for all sail lines (and for the two vintages in 4D) realigns the traces to a common water velocity and water bottom.

Like WASTA, WASAP should be run once for each sail line in an input survey. Input data must be non NMO-corrected CDP gathers with the Y-flag set on the last trace of each input 3D bin. The output of WASAP is non NMO-corrected CDP gathers, realigned to the common velocity, VREF, and to the reference water bottom.

Time variant automatic trim statics TVATSThis module is used for computing and applying time variant static corrections. A model is constructed by stacking the traces of one or several neighboring CDPs or bins in window(s) centered on one or several horizons. An external coherent stack can be entered via an auxiliary input buffer to be used as a model The corresponding window(s) of each elementary trace is cross-correlated with this model to calculate a time shift per horizon for each elementary trace.

These time shifts are interpolated along the trace to apply a time variant static correction independent of shot point and receiver surface positions.

Horizon information is read from XPS. Several horizons can be read from a single XPS horizon version. Two different options are available:

• 2D option: A model is constructed by stacking the windows selected around one or several horizons on CDP n or consecutive CDPs around CDP n. The corresponding windows of each elementary trace of CDP n are cross-correlated with this model

• 3D option: A model is constructed by stacking the traces of one bin n or of several consecutive bins around n on the same line and on adjacent lines. The

corresponding windows of each elementary trace of bin n are cross-correlated with this model

Flow ManagementAuxiliary trace synchronization TRASYThis module is designed to synchronize auxiliary trace buffers with the main input buffer and is part of the high density processing sequence (HD modules). The auxiliary input buffer traces are read via a secondary loop which must be coded. All main input buffer traces must be matched with an auxiliary input trace. However, auxiliary input buffer traces may be skipped if no match can be made.

In the case of high density velocity picking (using HDPIC), there must be one input auxiliary trace (VI or AN attribute trace) per main input trace gather (see HDPIC processing sequence).

Input traces are not sorted by the program: all traces are processed in the same order as they are input.

Multi-Component ProcessingCalibration of multicomponent sensors PRO4CPRO4C is used in preprocessing non-gimballed multicomponent receiver data, and more generally any 3C data (e.g., node). The program estimates a virtual vertical geophone (or a pair of orientated virtual horizontal geophones) by way of spectral combination of the available real geophones (calibration). To do so, the geology is assumed to be locally 1D in the vicinity of the receiver. It is also assumed that propagation can be either in an isotropic medium or in a medium with HTI anisotropy.

The program computes a certain number of stacks of the dataset and therefore needs PP and PS velocity fields.

D-14

Page 65: Release Notes

Geocluster 5.0 Release Notes

The synthesized vertical component (called composite vertical: CV) is computed as in the module PRO2C but with the additional constraint that no horizontal energy be present. The composite horizontal (CH) geophones are such that the wavelet is the same as the reference component wavelet and no vertical energy is present.

Application of PRO4C operators CALMCThe aim of this program is the application of PRO4C calibration operators to the dataset. Input dataset must be sorted in common receiver and common shotpoint. The operators are read by an independent loop at the beginning of execution phase.

3D Surface Related Multiple Elimination (SRME)

MOMUL patchLike the TIKIM module, new versions of the MOMUL patch module are produced regularly, so you can benefit from new developments, improvements, and optimizations as soon as validation is complete.

The developments described below refer to the patch P_MOMUL4100_080.

It is recommended to use the last available patch version of the MOMUL software. However you should not change the version of a module when production processing of a project has already started.

DistributionThis software is now distributed exclusively as a patch to implement the 3D SRME methodology.

You will find below a brief description of each module in the 3D SRME package.

Brief description of each module3D surface related multiple modeling MOMULThis module allows the construction of a surface related multiple model in shotpoint collection, for any acquisition geometry. There are three main options in the program:

• Iterative option (IT): The multiples that are modeled are the reverberations of the primary reflected waves generated by the sea floor and its neighboring layers (double travelpath and peglegs).

• Primaries option (PR): The program outputs only the primaries computed as previously described in the IT option.

D-18

Page 69: Release Notes

Geocluster 5.0 Release Notes

• Surface multiples PegLegs option (PG): The input data is used as an areal source record to be propagated and reverberated within the reflectivity volume.

The output traces are synthesized by modelling the wavefronts traveling between the reflectors and the free surface. The wavefields are extrapolated by using the one way wave equation in the f-k domain (phase shift) within the constant velocity assumption. An input flattened migrated section (prepared by the module MULIN) is interpreted as a reflectivity model of the soil.

Sea floor layer extraction from time migrated data MULINThis module extracts from a migrated section (time) the constant thickness layer surrounding the sea floor for later use in the module MOMUL (model based multiples modelling using wave equation extrapolators).

The constant thickness layer is defined by using a water bottom library (LIBRI FD) and by coding the values of thicknesses surrounding this horizon (LA above and LB under).

Prestack Depth Migration

KIMIP patchLike the TIKIM module, new versions of the KIMIP patch modules are produced regularly, so you can benefit from new developments, improvements, and optimizations as soon as validation is complete.

The developments described below refer to the version integrated in the current release and correspond to the patch P_PSDM4100E_314.

It is recommended to use the last available patch version of the PSDM software. However you should not change the version of a module when production processing of a project has already started.

DistributionThis software is now fully integrated in the current Geocluster release.

You will find below a brief description of each module in the PSDM package.

Brief description of each moduleGeoVista library LIBRI GVThis library defines the geometrical characteristics of the survey for pre-stack depth migration, in particular, the size and mesh of the acquisition zone where theoretical sources are defined, as well as the size and mesh of the image.

Creation of the data files to be migrated by KIMIP KIMTRThis module reads seismic input traces and generates, for each input file, an output trace file and two trace header files suitable for subsequent processing in KIMIP.

Input traces are rejected if they are flagged as invalid, or if the source or receiver position is outside the acquisition limits defined in the associated LIBRI GV.

Geocluster 5.0 New Batch Modules and Major Updates

KIMIP library LIBRI KIThis library defines a subset of an imaging survey defined by LIBRI GV, subsequently migrated by one single KIMIP job. It is used for the traveltime computation and for the KIMIP migration.

Smooth velocity traces SMOTHThis module smooths the input volume of velocity parameter traces in the three directions. The output files are used as input by the traveltime computation module TTRAY.

Traveltime map computation TTRAYThis module computes traveltimes and amplitude coefficients (Green’s attributes) using a ray-tracing algorithm. In case of multi-pathing, the module retains one of the following arrivals according to the chosen option:

• most energetic arrival, or

• fastest arrival, or

• shortest ray-path arrivals, or

• arrivals that have the minimum velocity contrast along their raypath.

Both down going and up-going rays are allowed. It allows to define the elevation of the theoretical source positions.

On input, the program requires a 3D velocity model, previously smoothed by SMOTH.

Traveltime velocity TTVELThis module is used to select and resample the velocity traces of a 3D survey before traveltime computation with WEIKO.

Traveltime map computation WEIKOThis module computes traveltime maps, either via fast solving of the eikonal equation in the celerity domain (first arrival), either via solving the two-way wave equation with a finite difference algorithm (higher-energy).

In the first case, the problem is solved by integrating the eikonal equation downwards. It avoids the generation of upgoing headwaves and can compute travel times with turning waves and head waves.

Traveltime map computation TOPAKThis module uses similar computation schemes as module WEIKO, with some differences in the implementation. It computes traveltime maps within anisotropic velocity models, either with a constant anisotropy axis (vertical or horizontal), or with a varying anisotropy axis (TTI). It also allows to define the elevation of the theoretical source positions.

3D prestack Kirchhoff depth migration KIMIPPerforms a Kirchhoff prestack depth migration using traveltimes computed by WEIKO, TOPAK or TTRAY. The program uses a cubic interpolation of traveltimes in order to remove artefact effects. A simplified Beylkin scheme is implemented for better Amplitude Preservation. A variable depth sampling option is available for time computing optimization. As an option, KIMIP allows the user to migrate: 2D datasets; Vertical Seismic Profiles (PSV); converted wave data and/or data with different elevations for sources and receivers (OBS, OBC, etc.). Parallelized and non-parallelized versions are available.

Voronoi fold compensation VORNIThis module compensates amplitude distortions due to fold irregularities resulting from 3D survey acquisition patterns. The program computes weighting coefficients for each input trace according to the surface area assigned to that trace. The results are used by KIMIP to apply the Voronoi fold compensation.

Geocluster 5.0 New Batch Modules and Major Updates

PSDM related patchesThe following modules are used in PSDM training processing sequences but not integrated in the Geocluster 5.0 release. They are distributed as patches available from the Geocluster user support group ([email protected]).

Dip calculation DIPCADIPCA creates volumes of inline and crossline direction dip from an input seismic dataset. The dips can subsequently be used in a variety of ways:

• To perform structurally consistent filtering of the seismic data (noise attenuation) or of attributes such as velocity,

• To create a structural model, generated in the form of .cst files (in UNITS format) that can be subsequently read by KIMIP and the travel time computation modules TTRAY and TOPAK.

The patch E_DIPCA_22 must be coded in your job together with the following patches:

Prestack Depth Migration (continued)Input wave equation 3D data INWETUsing input traces, this module creates files that are used by the wave equation migration modules such as SRMIP, RSMIP or RSDEM.

INWET outputs transposed 3D data binary files: velocity traces, migrated traces and anisotropy parameters (sampled in depth) as well as extrapolated traces (sampled in discrete fourier transform).

Input traces are composed of post-stack 3D data. They can be sorted by LINE-CDP or conversely.

Note that INWET manages decimal sample interval values.

To handle large 3D datasets, the input data can be split and stored in several files.

Output wave equation 3D data OUWETThis module is used to output velocity traces, migrated traces or time traces from files created by INWET or other wave equation sequence modules. It performs the exact inverse transposition of INWET, that is, from planes to traces. To optimize the execution of this program, or of any program that handles large volumes of 3D data, it is strongly recommended to consult the system administrator on available computing resources (disk and memory capacity).

SRMIPThe developments described below refer to the version integrated in the current release and correspond to patch P_SRMIP4100_395.

D-26

Page 77: Release Notes

Geocluster 5.0 New Batch Modules and Major Updates

3D wave equation prestack depth migration SRMIPSRMIP implements a pre-stack (common source or common receiver gathers) depth migration using wave equation algorithm. The migration is performed by a sequence INMIG V, SRMIP OP, SRMIP IN, SRMIP MI, SRMIP OU.

During the SRMIP MI phase, the prestack data is re-gridded, regularized over the imaging grid and datumed on a fixed plane (bwave phase).

The migration process consists in extrapolating (explicit scheme) the up-going wavefield and the down-going wavefield for each depth slice, and computing the correlation between the two fields. It produces two results, the migrated section and the illumination, which is analog to a time variant fold. The final migrated volume is obtained by stacking separately the migrated and illumination traces and by dividing the migration by the illumination.

3D wave equation preSDM angle gathers SRANGSRANG is part of the pre-stack depth migration processing sequence. This module transforms the pre-stack depth migration harmonic gathers output by SRMIP into reflection angle gathers.

The HA option performs this transformation (harmonic to angle gathers).

Option AH performs the reverse transformation which is used to obtain the image (harmonic 0) from the gather processed through the appropriate user sequence.

Poststack Depth Migration

RSMIPLike the TIKIM and KIMIP modules, new versions of the RSMIP patch module are produced regularly, so you can benefit from new developments, improvements, and optimizations as soon as validation is complete.

The developments described below refer to the patch version P_RSMIP4100_312 and P_RSDEM4100_312

It is recommended to use the last available patch version of the software. However you should not change the version of a module when production processing of a project has already started.

The use of this patch implies the use of patch MDG_INOUMIG4100_1735.

DistributionThis software is delivered exclusively as a patch.

You will find below a brief description of the modules.

Brief description of the module3D poststack wave equation depth migration RSMIPRSMIP implements a post-stack depth migration on parallel machines, using wave equation algorithm. The migration is performed by a sequence INMIG V, INMIG F, RSMIP OP, RSMIP MI, OUMIG I. The wavefield, in the form of frequency planes, is extrapolated (in depth) through layers having constant thicknesses. The 2D extrapolation operators can be broken down to a 1D polynomial which are expressed as a weighted sum of Chebychev polynomials, the weighting coefficients being computed by the Remez algorithm.

The aim is to perform a Poststack depth migration using operators similar to the ones used in the wave equation migration module SRMIP. For recursive

D-28

Page 79: Release Notes

D

Geocluster 5.0 New Batch Modules and Major Updates

operators (IMPL3D), a standalone is mandatory to get a file readable by RSMIP MI.

This method assures a better circularity for the impulse response of the extrapolation operator than with splitting methods in x and y. Also, the repositioning of events is more accurate and dips up to 80 degrees can be imaged.

For each depth-slice, each frequency is independently extrapolated.

The results of RSMIP MI are Image planes which are then transformed in Image TRACES using the OUMIG I module.

This patch implements the velocity scans and the Horizon migration.

3D poststack depth demigration RSDEMRSDEM is part of the[(INMIG-RSMIP) or (SRMIP-INMIG)]-RSDEM-OUMIG processing sequence. RSDEM can perform either isotropic or anisotropic demigration.

RSDEM applies the transposed RSMIP operators to perform post-stack demigration. From an input wavefield (expressed in the form of frequency planes) f( x,y,z,t=0), the demigration will reconstruct f( x,y,z=0,t).

Stratigraphic Inversion

INVEIThe developments described below refer to the patch version P_INVEI4100_519, for Geocluster 4.1. This patch is designed to work on Linux (RHEL 4.3) on the following machines:

• PC clusters.

• Single PC Geodesktop or Laptop; it cannot run on a local SUN unix machine.

The use of this patch implies the use of patch S_HAL4100_1310.

Brief description of the moduleSimultaneous elastic inversion of multiple angle stacks INVEIINVEI performs a simultaneous stratigraphic inversion of multiple angle stacks (below the critical angle) in order to derive the following attributes: Vp, Vs and ρ. The computation is carried out using the following input data:

• A minimum of two angle stacks. • One wavelet for each angle stack. • An a-priori model containing at least three properties (Vp, Vs, ρ). • Some a-priori constraints, such as Vp/Vs per layer, and so on.

During the input phase, input traces are reformatted into internal files needed for the inversion. After the last trace is read, the module will send all the files to the computer where the parallel inversion will be performed (local machine or cluster). The result of the inversion (a model containing properties for Vp, Vs and ρ which match the seismic) will then be saved in the user directory.

The adopted polarity convention is the one defined by Aki & Richards which states that an increase of Vp, Vs or ρ leads to a positive reflection coefficient.
