Gwinnett Goes All Out for Largest Relay For Life in the World The Gwinnett Relay is big – really big! The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Gwinnett County is the largest Relay event in the world, with 250 teams and 6,500 participants expected to take part this year, including 1,350 cancer survivors. The 21st Annual Relay at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds begins with the survivors’ reception from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 9. Survivors will lead off the Relay with the traditional Survivors’ Lap around the track at 7 p.m., to cheers and applause from the crowd. When the event ends on Saturday morning, May 10, participants walking around the track all night will have raised nearly $2 million for the fight against cancer. Having the No. 1 Relay is a point of pride for Gwinnett, with the entire community getting involved. More
than 125 of the county’s schools participate in the Relay, along with many of the area’s churches, businesses, civic organizations and medical facilities. They fill up the fairgrounds with their colorful campsites for the annual overnight fundraiser. “The Gwinnett Relay For Life is an incredible experience that brings every part of the community together for one cause – fighting cancer,” says Gwinnett Relay Co-Chairs Sheila Fowler and Kirsten Baker. “The Relay is a huge fundraiser that takes place in a festive atmosphere, with music, games, cooking, colorful campsites and celebration. But there’s a very serious side to Relay, too, as we honor survivors and remember those lost to cancer, and of course, raise money to find a cure. Relay gives everyone an opportunity to take action to kick cancer and to help
create a world with less cancer and more birthdays for all of us. We want everyone in Gwinnett to come out on Friday, May 9, and Relay!” Primerica is the presenting sponsor for the Gwinnett Relay for the fourth consecutive year. From the entertainment onstage, to this year’s fun car lap, to the traditional purple glove dance and the reverent luminary ceremony after dark, Relay offers something for everyone. It‘s not too late to participate in this year’s Relay. Go to www.relayforlife/gwinnettga to sign up, form a team, donate or for more information.

2014 RELAY FOR LIFE OF GWINNETT • MAY 9, 2014

American Cancer Society Recruiting Drivers to Provide Gwinnett Cancer Patients with Transportation to Treatments Every day, cancer patients in Gwinnett County need help getting to their lifesaving treatment. If you are able to provide assistance, the American Cancer Society needs you. The Society is recruiting volunteers to drive cancer patients to and from their treatment through the Road To Recovery® program. Many cancer patients in Gwinnett County and surrounding areas do not own a vehicle, can’t afford the extra gasoline, or do not have access to public transportation. Some patients may be elderly and unable to drive, too ill to drive, or have no family members or friends who are able to provide regular assistance with transportation. Without access to reliable transportation, cancer patients are often unable to get treatment and their chances for survival are greatly diminished. “This year more than 47,000
Georgia residents will be diagnosed with cancer, and many will not get to their lifesaving treatments because they don’t have a ride,” said Pam Ashman, mission delivery specialist for the American Cancer Society. “Now is a crucial time to reach out and lend support to those who are struggling with this disease.” The Road to Recovery program is offered to patients at no charge by the American Cancer Society. The Society provides free training to volunteer drivers. Requirements include a good driving record, a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and a vehicle that is in good working condition. Drivers must be 18 years of age or older. The Society conducts criminal background and DMV checks on drivers who sign up for the Road To Recovery program. Driver coordinators also are needed to help schedule the rides. Coordinators can work when it’s
convenient for them, including evenings or weekends. It takes as little as four hours a week of your time, organization, and communication skills to make a major impact on the well-being of cancer patients in your community. For more information about the Road To Recovery program or volunteering, please contact Pam Ashman at (404) 582-6120 or [email protected]. For cancer information, contact your American Cancer Society anytime at 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org. The Road to Recovery program is offered at no charge by the American Cancer Society. This program is one of the many ways that funds raised through events like Relay For Life help fulfill the American Cancer Society’s mission of saving lives from cancer and creating a world with more birthdays.

American Cancer Society Focused on Making This Cancer’s Last CenturyAmerican Cancer Society Focused on Making This Cancer’s Last CenturyA little more than 100 years ago, the American Cancer Society began the fight of a lifetime: The fight to end cancer. When the Society started its work, cancer was a word spoken only in whispers. The disease was almost certain death sentence. The lifesaving progress that’s been made in the past 10 years is remarkable. We’re on the road to making this cancer’s last century!Since the 1990s, cancer death rates have declined by 20 percent, which translates into more than 400 lives saved each and every day that would have been lost to cancer. Today, there are nearly 14 million cancer survivors in the United States, and two out of three people diagnosed with cancer in this country survive at least five years. The Society has been in the forefront of every major cancer breakthrough, from mammography to colonoscopy to bone marrow transplant to drugs like Tamoxifen, Herceptin and Gleevec. But the American Cancer Society won’t rest until three out of three people diagnosed with cancer
survive it. To ensure that new research is progressing in the fight against cancer, the Society currently funds more than 900 active grants at 235 institutions – with $10 million in grants at Georgia institutions. And with landmark studies like our recent Cancer Prevention Study 3 (CPS-3), among others, no other organization conducts larger epidemiology studies. And ACS is delivering programs and services at the community level that support cancer patients, survivors and their families. These include Road To Recovery to provide free transportation to cancer patients to and from treatment; Reach To Recovery linking new patients with breast cancer survivors to provide support and guidance; Look Good and Feel Better helping women cancer patients cope with appearance-related side effects; 24 x 7 resources such as our comprehensive cancer information site, cancer.org, and our toll-free number, 1-800-227-2345; and much more. The Society will continue to focus on “cure, care, prevent and advocate” until cancer is no longer a major health threat. We are committed to “Finish the Fight!”
2013 RESEARCH ROUNDUP: 10 KEY BREAKTHROUGHS AND INSIGHTS
1. CANCER DEATH RATES DOWN: The rate of death from cancer in the United States continues to decline among both men and women, among all major racial and ethnic groups, and for the most common types of cancer, according to the Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer.
2. WALK MORE: Researchers from the American Cancer Society have found that walking at least 7 hours per week is associated with a 14% lower risk of developing breast cancer after menopause.
3. COLON CANCER SCREENING SCIENCE: American Cancer Society grantee Bert Vogelstein, MD, of the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center won the first-ever Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences in 2013 – an award of $3 million – for his discovery of three genes related to the development of colon cancer, which led to advances in the prevention and early detection of colon cancer.
4. LUNG SCREENING IMPORTANCE: Researchers from the American Cancer Society have found that screening all former and current smokers who fall within guideline recommendations could prevent up to 12,000 lung cancer deaths a year in the US.
5. 300,000: This is the number of adults that the American Cancer Society recently finished enrolling in its new Cancer Prevention Study-3, with the goal of discovering more ways to stop cancer.
300K
6. DEATHS FROM BREAST CANCER DOWN: The American Cancer Society finds that death rates from breast cancer in the United States have dropped 34% since 1990.
7. UP IN SMOKE: Africa is poised to become the “future epicenter of the tobacco epidemic,” according to an analysis by the American Cancer Society.
8. CHAMPION FOR CHILDREN: Joanne Wolfe, MD, a past grant recipient and 2013 winner of the Society’s Pathfinder in Palliative Care Award, has spent her career helping children with advanced cancer and is now working on a novel system for better managing their physical and emotional symptoms.
9. OUTDOOR AIR POLLUTION CAUSES LUNG CANCER: After the International Agency for Research on Cancer announced this, longtime American Cancer Society grant reviewer Emanuela Taioli, MD, PhD, said “the next step is to see changes in policy and emissions standards.”
10. BE A STRONGER SURVIVOR: A review of scientific studies finds that physical therapy and other types of rehabilitation can improve cancer survivors’ quality of life by addressing the physical and emotional problems that most report experiencing.
