With the warming of the weather, our team is keen to put the spring back in your step and to provide you with the very best in entertainment at your club.

This season, you will notice a real difference around the club. The Westport Club is ‘Going Pink’ for the months of October and November.

October is Breast Cancer awareness month and The Westport Club has teamed up with local charity, the Hastings Cancer Trust, to raise funds for this important cause which affects so many women in our Community.

Melbourne Cup day is coming up and what better way to spend the day than with a glass of something bubbly in your hand and a view out over the Hastings River as you relax enjoy all of the fun and festivities of the day? We will be turning the club pink for this occasion too and will be fundraising throughout the day for our worthy cause.

‘Mr. Racing’, Ronnie Coombes will once again host our annual pre-race spectacular – the Melbourne Cup Calcutta on Sunday 3rd November. Tickets sell out quickly for this event so be sure to get in early.

How Can I Get Involved? It’s really quite simple!It is as simple as doing something (as big or as small as you like) that your family and friends will sponsor you for. For example you could set up a ‘bake-off', you might hold a

‘knit-a-thon’ or play a pink bowls marathon, dye your hair pink or wear pink shoes for two whole months.

No effort is too big or too small and all of your ideas are most welcome!

The Westport Club will be holding a number of events that you can get involved in throughout October and November. We will be kicking off with Pink Bowls on Sunday 29 September – why not don your pink zinc and join us on the rink?! Dress up in pink for Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 5 November or join us at the Hastings Cancer Trust Pink Cocktail Party on Saturday 23 November. All funds raised go to the Hastings Cancer Trust who will help us to administer the donations for breast and gynaecological cancer care in the local community.

Each year I take great pride in reporting to you the contribution our organisation makes to the local communities that surround each of our clubs. This year is no different to any other as we have experienced yet another incredible year of community support. We’ve proudly assisted 100 community groups on the Central Coast, 35 community groups in Port Macquarie, 8 community groups in the Canterbury community and recently started our community support within the Chatswood community. This equates to a financial contribution across our clubs of $1.685 million, which is $785,000 above our legal obligation.

It should be highlighted that community contributions made by our clubs each year do not only come from Mingara. Each one of our clubs individually contribute to their local community based on their legal obligations via the ClubGrants Program and more often than not, contributions are made above and beyond our legal obligations. It’s important to acknowledge the depth of relationships that are formed locally between our clubs and various groups within their local government area and our teams put in a great deal

of effort in researching and understanding local social issues to ensure our community support and financial contributions truly make a difference.

Partnering with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, the team at The Westport Club provided the community with a new mobile library service to extend the reach of Council library services to children and schools located in the more remote outlying areas of their community. This wonderful acknowledgement clearly demonstrates the understanding, the relationships and the commitment the team at The Westport Club has to its local community.

One of the most significant events this year for our organisation was The Westport Club receiving the “Community Ambassador” Award within the mid-North Coast region at the 2013 Clubs and Community Awards for their wonderful Mobile Library Van initiative.


Our team, has once again, shared our vision “to make a significant contribution to the quality of community life” through their involvement in many community events throughout the year, such as the Mingara Relay for Life, Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal and Max Potential Program to name but a few. Their passion for our commitment to the community is evident by their hands on involvement each year. This year has been no different, we have undertaken numerous community support and engagement activities that illustrate our vision “to make a significant contribution to the quality of community life”. I’m incredibly proud to report the following highlights to you:

Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal – Mingara Recreation Club, The Westport Club and Lantern ClubOur group of clubs individually support the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal. This year the Lantern Club team volunteered for the first time in the Door Knock Appeal inspiring family and friends to join them. The Mingara team has been volunteering for many years during the Door Knock Appeal collecting door-to-door and also at roadside locations around the Central Coast. The Westport Club team successfully hosted the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal business breakfast, marking the start of the Red Shield Appeal in their local area and raised $13,500. Mingara also hosts a similar event each year and this year raised over $60,000 to kick-start the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal on the Central Coast.

Mingara’s “Pink” CampaignMingara’s relationship with the Central Coast office of the NSW Cancer Council continues to strengthen. Our mutual advocacy produces outstanding results for the Central Coast community and Mingara’s “Pink” Campaign was another. Many fundraising activities were held during the month of October including a brave head shave by Mingara’s founding member, Shirley Hadley; an inspiring 100km run by team member, Rachel Davis; a delicious Biggest Morning Tea catered for by our dedicated Women’s Bowling Club to name but a few. In going “Pink” Mingara raised $37,000 to help the fight against cancer.

Mingara Relay For LifeNow running for well over a decade, the Mingara Relay for Life is the flagship event on the Central Coast that unites cancer sufferers, survivors and carers, and is a tribute those who have bravely fought but lost their battle with this hideous disease. The success of this event continues to astound us all and it is clear the local community value both the work of the NSW Cancer Council and the event itself. Year on year the fundraising tally exceeds the previous year and this year saw a record-breaking $425,000 raised.

Literacy – The Westport Club and Mingara Recreation ClubA collective focus on literacy across our clubs within Mingara Leisure Group, saw The Westport Club partner with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council

to launch the Mobile Library Literacy Van. The Westport Club funded $70,000 to purchase and custom fit a van, library books and provided assistance in engaging rural schools in the region to create a regular run for the Mobile Library. Launched in February this year, the van now reaches over 700 children weekly, providing them with valuable library resources to assist with their education and inspire reading for pleasure.

Through the Port Macquarie-Hastings Local ClubGRANTS Committee the Club was able to fund three more projects that would enhance the love of reading for children and support children with learning difficulties. The grants were provided to Learning Links, Autism Spectrum Australia ASPECT Port Macquarie Satellite Class and Bain Park Community Preschool.

Mingara also continued to help kids fall in love and improve reading with a $10,000 donation to Central Coast Dyslexia Association. This group helps implement reading programs in schools across the Central Coast and provides training and support for local teachers.

Max Potential – Lantern ClubLantern Club has been doing an exceptional job in connecting community leaders with emerging young leaders from local high schools through its Max Potential Program. This year the club contributed $12,500 to the 22 week program that aims to help students accelerate their potential, challenge them to lift their game, and build their ‘can do’ attitude through a community project that inspires them to explore their entrepreneurial spirit. The Lantern Club team were fortunate to have Morris Iemma as their local Max Potential Ambassador this year. Mr Iemma shared the journey with the Max Potential coaches and students and was very generous in sharing his leadership experiences with them. Students participating in this years program were from Kingsgrove North High School, Beverley Hills Girls High School and Belmore Boys High School.

Vegetable Garden at Punchbowl Public School – Lantern ClubFunding of $5,090 was given to Punchbowl Public School by Lantern Club to assist them in creating a vegetable garden for students. The funding allowed the school to enclose a garden area for planting vegetables with a 1.2m fence, and provided tools, equipment and seedlings. The project came about from 2 groups of special needs children at the school (one group with intellectual disabilities and the other a group of multi-age refugee children) who expressed an interest in learning about sustainable practices.

It should be highlighted the contribution the club industry as a whole makes to local communities across NSW. Registered Clubs in NSW all contribute to the ClubGrants Scheme. Last year, NSW clubs gave over $92 million to community groups, charities and sports organisations through this scheme. It is through the support of club members, via their membership and use of club

facilities that this is possible. These contributions are something we, as a community, should be extremely proud of.

Registered Clubs across NSW also play an integral role in the provision of funding and resources for a multitude of sports. This funding assists these sporting groups with an array of operational requirements from uniforms, trophies and equipment to room hire, functions, administration and in some cases, facilities. Our clubs, Mingara Recreation Club on the Central Coast, The Westport Club in Port Macquarie, Lantern Club in the City of Canterbury and The Gordon Club in Chatswood, support 40 sub and affiliated clubs in a range of sports. These sub and affiliated clubs cater for the 51,000+ members across our group and their families. Our contribution to these clubs during 2012/2013 was $802,481. These clubs are run by dedicated teams of volunteers who do an amazing job and who give up their time to contribute to the social fabric of our community. They ensure our children and grandchildren have the opportunity to participate in team or individual sport, in some cases to an elite level. These clubs also help to ensure our ageing population has access to social interaction and physical outlet through sport and help encourage a sense of community spirit.

Mingara Leisure Group reports a successful year of trade with a revenue growth of $5.587M to $70.207M up from $64.620M last year. This is as a result of excellent trading at The Westport Club and Mingara. The financial management of the clubs assets has also tracked well this year with a growth in total company assets from $109.367M to $118.367M. Our debt funding of the construction of Lantern Club at Roselands, the new Mingara One Fitness Centre at Tuggerah and our amalgamation with The Gordon Club has seen an increase in our overall borrowings from $12.278M to $21.293M.

In achieving these fantastic results, my sincere thanks to our Board of Directors, along with the Mingara Recreation Club, The Westport Club and Lantern Club Community Advisory Committee’s, as well as our Chief Executive Officer and his management team. Our front line teams at each club play an integral role in our success, forming wonderful relationships with our members and greatly assist in making a visit to our venues truly memorable – thank you all.

In closing, members, I thank you for your continued support in helping us deliver our vision "to make a significant contribution to the quality of community life". Our clubs would not be where they are today without the vision and dedication of our Founding and Life Members, who planted those first seeds and inspired the journey that we now all share together through our clubs.

CEO’s Report

Members,

As I write this column for you, we have just elected a new government, and, going by what your comments to me have been in recent conversations, not before time. Regardless of your political persuasion, the vast majority of you have made your feelings known as to your general dissatisfaction with a minority government. The last few years have been difficult for our communities, given the uncertainty and this has translated into our performance as hospitality venues such as ours, rely upon consumers spending disposable income and their confidence levels. Perhaps now with a clear decision, the community at large will feel more confident and this will translate into organisations such as ours.

Members, as you well know, we are very passionate about our Vision, “to make a significant contribution to the quality of community Life”, and no one embodies this more than our Chairman Phil Walker. Not only is Phil our Chairman, he also represents our organisation as Deputy Chairman of Central Coast Tourism, Deputy Chairman of Regional Development Australia Central Coast (RDACC), and until recent times, was also Deputy Chairman of Wyong Race Club. In acknowledgement of his tireless efforts, Phil was recently awarded the Premier’s Award for Community Contribution. Member for The Entrance, Chris Spence, MP made this prestigious award, to a very surprised and humbled Phil. Our congratulations go to Phil for this well deserved acknowledgement.

Whilst on the topic of community service, we are once again proud to share with you the highlights of our year. In Port Macquarie, we launched our Mobile Library Van in conjunction with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, to service the outer-lying schools and communities of the region. This project has

been very successful and, in fact, we won the Mid North Coast Regional Award for Community Project at the ClubsNSW Clubs and Community Celebration.

At Mingara, we were very pleased to be asked to trial a wonderful community initiative by ClubsNSW and The Salvation Army. A Chaplain, provided by the Salvo’s, has been based at the club, in an effort to assist our members with their general everyday issues, with an emphasis on problem gambling. Despite having had to deal with only a solitary gambling issue, the program has been an outstanding success and we hope to be able to continue this member service into the future.

Once again we have contributed to our Sub and Affiliated Sporting organisations in all of our venues, with all experiencing success to varying degrees. Of course, it’s not so much about winning necessarily; it’s about the social connectedness as well as the physical and mental stimulation that it generates. Imagine the difference in our local communities if these different groups did not exist.

Our support extends also to welfare and charitable organisations. These wonderful community groups play an enormous role in our community and it never ceases to amaze me as to the efforts that some individuals go to in order to serve others. We are proud to be able to support them.

In total, our support of our local communities totals $1.685 million, far in excess of our obligatory $900,000. This is a figure that we are proud to provide and hope that our support will always continue to deliver outstanding benefits to the communities in which we operate.

Members, the year in review was particularly busy for the Board, Management and all the Team. While continuing to operate all of our clubs, we managed to complete the building works at Roselands, open the new club as the re-branded Lantern Club, demolish the old club, complete the amalgamation with Gordon and Social Recreation Club, re-branded as The Gordon Club. Then to make sure that we had absolutely no spare time, we fitted out and opened a second fitness centre on the Central Coast, with the Mingara One Fitness Tuggerah, located on the Pacific Highway near Wyong. A very full year indeed!

The Lantern Club, whilst opened for members in November of 2012, was officially opened by the Premier of NSW, Barry O’Farrell on May 31st. The club, built at a cost of $16 million, is a beautiful venue for our members and the community at large. We are proud to have managed the whole process internally, with a number of outstanding efforts from within our team. We look forward to serving our members in the local community of Canterbury for many years to come.

The amalgamation with Gordon Social and Recreation Club was completed on October 15th, 2012, at a cost of $1.3 million. Immediately re branded as The Gordon Club, we are currently in preparation for renovations having turned the club around from its’ negative trading position. We look forward to improving the facilities to something which our members can be proud of.

As mentioned previously, with the growing community focus on health and well-being, and our success in operating Mingara One Fitness at Mingara, we have leased a highly visible space on the Pacific Highway, fitted out and opened the “Mingara One Fitness at Tuggerah”. This is a very unique offering and serves both our existing fitness members, and also the growing population towards the north of the Central Coast. We anticipate this to be hugely popular and a successful fitness venture for the organisation.

In terms of construction, we have also recently opened the new coffee shop at Mingara, The Roasted Berry. Replacing The Coffee Club, this project was also undertaken by the team internally and I’m sure the members will be very pleased with the new offering. We are managing this outlet ourselves, with Naomi Taylor heading up the team, including the recently crowned Hennessy Barista Hot Club Cup Barista of the Year, Kye Singe. Come and give it a try. (At the Barista competition, we had five of the final seven places including third place by one of our Chefs, Luke Corkery from The Westport Club.)

For our Port Macquarie based members, we are commencing our project for renovations at The Westport Club. This project will take some time to develop, but members can look forward to an improved venue in the medium term. At Mingara, in the coming twelve months we will be undertaking a very significant project to reduce our energy consumption on site. As the recipients of a CEEP Funding grant, in which the Federal Government matches our expense dollar for dollar, we will install a co-generation plant. This will utilise natural gas to fire up an electrical generator, which whilst producing all our electricity needs in peak and shoulder periods, will produce hot water as a by-product. This hot water can then be utilised to heat our pool water in the Aquatic Centre. This is a very worthwhile project for the environment and also has a very significant positive impact on our energy consumption, thus reducing the expense to the club.

Members, all of this obviously comes at a cost and we are fortunate to be in a position where our clubs are trading successfully. The most significant financial measure for the organisation is the Earnings Before Interest, Taxation, Depreciation and Amortization (EBITDA). For this year, our EBITDA was $10.076M down slightly from last year’s $10.683 million. This is a very pleasing result,

given the costs of opening the brand new club (Lantern Club) and brand new fitness centre (Mingara One Fitness Tuggerah), and the costs of the amalgamation with Gordon Social and Recreation Club.

All of these events have also had a very significant, but expected, impact on the net profit result for the year. The opening of a brand new $16M building is always going to result in a massive increase in depreciation (a non-cash expense) and the amalgamation with another club, as we know, distorts the final result due to the accounting treatment of the assets gained on amalgamation. In addition, the opening of a new fitness centre will always incur some initial start up costs. As a result, we have recorded a small loss of $74,104. This result was forecast, despite the previous year’s result being a surplus before income tax of $2.675M.

Revenues grew from $64.620 million in 2012/2013 to a record $70.207 million this year, and again our Balance Sheet shows our total assets growing from $109.367M to $118.367M. This represents a very strong annual performance in a fairly difficult trading environment. To fund the construction of both Lantern Club and the new fitness centre at Tuggerah, in addition to the amalgamation with The Gordon Club, our overall borrowings grew from $12.278M to $21.294M as at June 30, 2013. During the course of the year, we repaid $2.952 million of our borrowings.

From our humble beginnings, we now, at the end of June 2013 employ 529 people in our Team, across 5 different locations, with a total payroll exceeding $24 million per annum. Every single member of our Team makes a valuable contribution and I thank every one of them for their efforts throughout the course of the year. It is through their efforts looking after our members, we are able to make such a difference in our local communities.

Our Board of Directors led by Chairman Phil Walker, continue to perform their role with vigor and they are progressive and eager to continue to provide first class facilities for our members. Unfortunately, during the course of the year in review, Keith Crossman resigned from our Board due to health reasons and I take this opportunity to thank Keith for his efforts and support over the 10 years that he was a member of our Board. In his place, Russell Johnston has been appointed and Russell has adapted to his new role well in the months that he has been a member of the team. Thank you and welcome Russell.

Members, once again, I take this opportunity to thank you for your support. Your patronage, in turn, allows us to continue to improve your facilities, plan for the long-term future of the organisation, and support worthwhile community sporting and charitable groups. We take our Vision seriously and hope that you too are proud to make a significant contribution to the quality of community Life.

Chilled BorschtFrom Russian origins, chilled borscht is a soup made with beetroot. With the addition of sour cream, the soup has a rich pink colour which varies in intensity depending on the amount used. For spring and summer this is a delightfully light and refreshing soup. It is also very easy to make and store for days refrigerated.

6 serves1lt chicken or vegetable stock

500g fresh beetroot

1 white onion

250ml sour cream

Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

Peel and roughly cut the beetroot and onion.

Place in an adequately sized pot with the cold stock.

Bring the pot up to the boil and then turn down to simmer.

Cover the pot and simmer on low for half an hour.

Test the beetroot with a fork, you should be able to easily push through the beetroot. If the beets are still hard, simmer for longer.

More stock can be added if the liquid has evaporated.

Once fully cooked, remove from heat and blend with a hand blender.

Chill the soup in a clean container in the refrigerator.

Once cold, mix in the sour cream.

Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. You are now ready to serve.

In light of our celebration of all things PINK!, we have put together a list of foods that may help prevent common cancers:

BLUEBERRIES: At their best and in season from December, blueberries are well documented as a 'superfood'. They're high in powerful antioxidants which can neutralise free radicals, the nasties responsible for damaging our cells and causing disease, including cancer. Add blueberries to your favourite breakfast cereal a few times a week for a real immune boost.

GARLIC: Fresh garlic contains sulfur compounds that may stimulate the immune systems defences against cancer. Add fresh garlic to your cooking whenever possible…and hang the bad breath!

LEMONS: Citrus fruits consumed daily can also help prevent cancer. Making a batch of fresh lemonade using fresh lemons (or limes), not only cleanses your system, but may cut the risk of throat, mouth and stomach cancers, according to Australian Researchers.

BROCCOLI: Another well-known 'superfood', broccoli should be eaten as often as possible, either as part of your meal or as a healthy snack on its own. Broccoli is best eaten steamed or raw (not microwaved) to ensure your body receives maximum benefit of its cancer preventing goodness.

SALMON: Australian Researchers suggest regular servings of fish as part of a balanced diet. Fish intake may help cut your risk of developing blood cancers such as leukemia, myeloma and non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Omega 3 rich fish like salmon, tuna and shrimp, may help the risk of endometrial cancer in women. Fish is a wonderfully versatile meal, is fast-cooking and perfect with salad for the upcoming summer months.

BRAZIL NUTS: Brazil nuts are rich in selenium, a trace mineral that helps kill cancer cells and helps any damaged cells in our body repair. University studies conducted in the USA have reported that males with high blood levels of selenium are less likely to develop prostate cancer than those with lower levels. Brazil nuts are delicious toasted and added to a salad or eaten simply on their own.

GLOBE ARTICHOKE: Although they may look a little fierce and tough, artichokes are packed with goodness and contain anti-oxidants that may help prevent skin cancer. Once cooked artichokes are tender and tasty – a great addition to casseroles or eaten alone with a drizzle of lemon.

THURSDAY 12 DECEMBERThe Westport Club invites you to celebrate Christmas with us in a wonderful setting on the banks of the Hastings River Get into the Christmas spirit with your family and friends at Westport’s Christmas Under the Stars. Bring your chairs and blankets and enjoy the line-up of great entertainment, including our special guest, Beccy Cole; local choirs and dance groups.

Santa will make a special appearance and there will be our wonderful spectacular fireworks display over the Hastings River at approximately 9pm.

Entry is by gold coin donation to support our local Salvation Army Christmas Hamper Appeal.

Activities for the evening include our traditional ‘side show ally’ of bbqs, popcorn and fairy floss tent; face-painting; jumping castles and more.

Conditions: to ensure a great time is had by all, Christmas under the Stars is an alcohol free and smoke free event. This is also a dry weather event.Christmas

In August our members witnessed, during an open presentation in the Riverview Lounge, 26 local organisations receiving funding in excess of $336,000 from The Westport Club. These funds were given to local welfare, community and sporting organisations who align with our Club’s vision of “making a significant contribution to the quality of community life”.

The Westport Club receives applications for funding as part of the Local Committee ClubGRANTS Scheme from local welfare and community organisations. The Club also provides grants for its ongoing commitment to improving literacy in the local community to schools and community pre-schools. This is made possible through the partnerships the Club has developed with Dymocks Children’s Charities and Quantum Technology.

Earlier this year the Club launched the Mobile Library Literacy Van, a joint project with the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council. The Club will continue to provide an injection of funds to support the operational costs of the Van as well as providing funds for new books over the next three years.

The Westport Club also makes contributions continually throughout the year to many other programs and groups

The Westport Club gives the gift of over $336,000 to the local communityincluding:

• Port Macquarie Mixed Probus

• Port Macquarie Ladies Probus

• Port Macquarie Cancer Council

• The Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal and Christmas Hamper Appeal

The Westport Club’s vision is “to make a significant contribution to the quality of community life”. This vision extends to the sporting fields in our region and to social recreational groups which include:
