DE-CONSTRUCTING PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS AS RELATED TO PHARMACY AND COSMETICS

Ronald L. Koch, Ph.D University of illinois at the Medical Center, Chicago, illinois

ABSTRACT A common exercise for pharmacy students is to simulate the formulation of an over-thecounter medicinal, herbal, or cosmetic product with the goal to eventually use that product in a future dosage formulation. This exercise presents the pharmacy student with the exciting opportunity to develop problem solving techniques needed to solve the formulation problem they have selected. In add ition, this work allows the student to S99 how different, but related, sciences share basic information and it allows the student to consider related scientific fields as potential future employment opportuniUes. An OVeMew of this foonulation simulation work and the educational, personal, and professional benefits to the pharmacy student will be presented.

He is a member and a reviewer of the Journal of Invest igative Dermatology. In addition to multiple affiliations, publications, grants and honors, Dr. Koch has received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award six times and has received four Golden Apple Awards. His dedication to education is clear in his philosophy: I believe that when students are given the basic principles of a subject and taught how to apply these principles they will be far superior to others w hen placed in a problem solving setting.

It's September; what a wonderful time of yearl The year is flying by, but with our batteries recharged from summer vacations and our monthly meeting hiatus we are ready to take on the rest of the year.

The Midwest Tutorial UFragrance" on Friday, June 18th was a great success with our lecturer, Steve Herman. Nature also provided quite a bang for the ending. Thank you to our committee Frank Jarzembowski, Rita Massinople, Melissa Tolia, and Perry Romanowski.

We celebrated our summer event together with our Second Annual Golf Outing on Monday, July 19th and it was spectacularl We had another beautiful day of fun and networking at Carriage Greens Country Club in Darien, IL. Thanks to George Concar and his talented committee, and thank you to all of the volunteers and sponsors for making this event even more successful than last year.

Our volunteers are working hard to offer many great educational opportunities this fall. Our fall season kicks off with our next Chapter meeting on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at 5:30 pm. We will be at the very popular Carlucci, 1801 Butterfield Road, Downers Grove, IL. Our speaker is the much anticipated Ronald L. Koch, Ph.D talking about "DeConstructing Personal Care Products as Related to Pharmacy and Cosmetics".

Our Technical Symposium "Innovation" is scheduled for October 26th at the Westin Chicago Northwest 400 Park Boulevard, Itasca, IL. There is an exciting line up of speakers and activities.

This is the time of year we are looking for volunteers to run for the executive board of MWSCC. We need to fill the offices of chair-elec1 and secretary. Let us know if you are interested by contacting me at [email protected].

Stay active and engaged. Mark your calendars and take advantage of our events. We are always looking for volunteers so contact me at [email protected] if you are interested in participating. Remember, the best way to stay current on chapter events is to subscribe to our blastmail at www.midwestscc.org/mailing-lisV and visit our website, www.midwestscc.org.

I hope to see you at our next meeting on Tuesday, September 14,2010 a15:30pm.

2010 see Annual Scientific Seminar By Melissa Tolla

Hosted by Area I, the 2010 see Annual Scientific Seminar was held June 3-4 at the Long Island Marriott in Uniondale. NY. Attendance at the meeting was good due to the wide va riety of topics, excellent speakers, and the annual student poster session. The meeting felt smaller than previous years and attendance was most likely affected by other industry events which occurred in the same time frame. Nevertheless, the Annua l Scientific Seminar was a success!

The seminar opened on Thursday morning with the remarks from Mindy Goldstein the Moderator of Session A: "Green-. Ken Marenus of Estee Lauder Companies presented a thought provoking Keynote Award lecture titled "Why Green? Why Now?-. This lecture was sponsored by the Henry Maso Family and Siltech LlC. Ken's lecture focused on the concepts of "greenness· and "sustainability" and the impact that these concepts have on formulation , production and marketing in the cosmetics industry. He also reviewed the four key pillars of effective sustainability programs and the impact that they have on the cosmetics industry. The audience listened attentively as Dr. Marenus spoke. This lecture was the best I have ever heard on this particular topic. In closing his lecture, Dr. Marenus reminded everyone of Darwin's statement "it's not the strongest species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It's the one that adapts to change:

Keynote speaker Jennifer Marsh of Procter & Gamble kicked off Session B "Hai"moderated by Randy Wickett. The lectures covered a variety of subjects from product design strategies for colored hair and hair straightening to modification of the hair growth cycle.

Session C on "Formulations" moderated by Martha Tate, began with keynote speaker Betsy Schmalz Ferguson of American Flavors and Fragrances. Her discussion took a look at the color cosmetic segment and the challenges in this segment as a result of the current economic situation in our country. The lectures that followed showed the challenges of formulation with pigments, surface treatments to improve pigment dispersion and luster measurements.

Several awards were presented at this meeting . The first award, which was sponsored by the Henry Maso family and Siltech, was presented by Joyce Maso to Dr. Ken Marenus. The second award, sponsored by Rhodia, was presented by Pascal Herve to Craig Bonda, Anna Pavlovic, Kerry Hanson and Chris Bardeen for their publication. 0+ Chemicals presented awards to four students for their poster presentations.

I left this year's meeting with many new ideas and a boost of energy from the enthusiasm of all the participants. I look forward to next year's meeting in Las Vegas.

Chapter Golf Outing SMC"C

2010 Midwest see Golf Outing a Rousing Success By

Cinda Cartson - Midwest Chapter Chair

Midwest sec held its second annual golf outing at the Carriage Greens Country Club on Monday, July 19th. More than 100 golfers teed off in a shotgun start for our four-person scramble. The event included lunch, 18 holes, an open bar and a dinner complete with prizes for golfers. We were even joined by a few non-golfers. The outing was a huge unqualified success and a great deal of fun!

We very much appreciate and thank all of our sponsors, golfers, and donors for their support of this event. We also thank the Pro and team at Carriage Greens Country Club for making this day memorable. We look forward to our next golf outing.

The Midwest sec especially thanks our Golf Chairman, George Concar and his committee Mike Marks, Dennis Abbeduto, Anatoly Dameshek for making this day a huge success! Many players kept rule #6 in mind to make sure to keep the speed of play up to get to the "19th hole" in time.

SMCC Technical Symposium

Cheryl Perkins Chosen for Keynote Speaker at Chapter Technical Symposium

As a global thought leader in innovation, Perkins brings more than 25 years of expertise in leading inventors and companies to identify and transform insights, designs, technologies and capabilities into total solutions and new-to-the-world innovations.

Prior to founding Innovationedge, Perkins most recently served as the Senior Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer for Kimberly-Clark. She ran the company's innovation and enterprise growth organizations, including research and development, engineering, design, new business, global strategic alliances, environment, safety and regulatory affairs, and oversaw innovation processes, systems and tools. She has ten U.S. Cheryl Perkins Patents and several more pending.

We selected Cheryl based on her expertise in the areas identified by members as most important to our Innovation theme. Examples of member feedback:

1) Feeding natural curiosity. "Things only get started when we tap into our inner hunger for the new and different."

2) Delving into "reinvention versus true invention" ... baby steps or something truly new?

3) Focusing on the whole consumer experience and not just the technology ... new ways products deliver benefits to consumers.

4) Expanding beyond "meeting a need," recognizing the potential to redefine markets so drastically that consumer lifestyles are recreated into a whole new way of life

5) Taking basic ideas, concepts and solutions from many sources and industries in order to piece them together in new ways.
