The Rev. Canon Dr. Scott Sharman is a theo-logian and priest in the Anglican tradition. He holds a Ph.D. in theology from St. Michael’s College, Toronto. His research focused on 20th and 21st century ecumenical and interreligious history and thought.
He will address the “sense of stall and stagna-tion and ‘ecumenical win-ter’ that came to domi-nate during the 90s and 00s,” and offer a theologi-cal, methodological, and spiritual diagnosis as to why that might have hap-pened. But then he will go on to offer examples of things that seem to be leading to new life and impetus for a renewed ecumenical movement – an “ecumenical spring” – especially in the Canadian context, including the call to healing and reconciliation with indigenous peoples, the urgency of interfaith dialogue, ecclesial demo-graphic shifts and the growth of the Church in the global south, and the emergence of post-colonial forms of discipleship.
Scott is the Animator for Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations for the Anglican Church of Canada, staffing bilateral and multilateral dialogues and partnerships with numerous Christian churches and other faith communities at the national level. He serves as Canon Theo-logian for the Anglican Diocese of Edmonton. He engages in the ecumenical and interfaith move-ments through academic, practical, and activist streams, all at the same time.
Scott lives in Treaty 6 Territory, Edmonton, Alta., and is married to the Very Rev. Alexandra Meek. They have three boys and one dog: Elliot, Felix, Graeme, and Sparky.
